Left cover photo: Courtesy of National Institute ofStandards and Technology. Quantum Daisy. Twelvecobalt atoms arranged in a circle on a surface ofcopper produce a daisy-like pattern from theinterference of electron waves. This image was madewith a one-of-a-kind instrument that, actingautonomously, picks up and places individual atomsanywhere on a surface. NIST scientists are studyingthe quantum properties of different atom arrangementsto help improve the design and fabrication ofnanoscale devices.

Center cover photo: Courtesy of Oak Ridge NationalLaboratory. LIGHTING THE WAY — From left, AlexFischer, head of ORNL’s Technology Transfer program,is shown with Jeff Muhs of ORNL’s EngineeringScience and Technology Division, who developed thehybrid solar lighting technology, April 10, 2003. Itallows the sun’s ray to light a room directly by usingoptical fibers to bring sunlight inside, and, in thefuture, indirectly by harnessing the remaining portionof sunlight (mainly infrared energy) to generateelectricity that can power the room’s light bulbs.

SPIE would like to express its deepest appreciation to the programchairs, conference chairs, cochairs, program committees, and sessionchairs who have so generously given of their time and advice to makethis symposium possible. The symposium, like our other conferencesand activities, would not be possible without the dedicatedcontribution of our participants and members.

This program is based on commitments received up to the time ofpublication and is subject to change without notice.
