Pig Management

• Weigh pigs 45 days before the show– Take the number of days till show X 1.9 = amount of gain

– Take the amount of gain + the actual weight on weigh day

= Show weight• Is this where you want your pig to be?

• To target a pig for a specific weight– Target show weight – actual weight ÷ number of days till show

= Average daily gain needed to meet goal

• Three weeks prior to show, weigh pig every 2 to 3 days

• Managing skin and hair– Daily brushing

– Spray on conditioners• Mix 4/5 aloe vera juice and 1/5 cheap hair conditioner

in a spray bottle and apply to pigs on the days pigs are not washed

– Wash weekly or more 30 to 60 days prior to show

– Eliminate wet spots in pen

– Fly control measures – prevent fly strike

• Gestating sows and gilts: Feed each sow or gilt 4.5 lb per day. Adjust feeding level of MM ST Sow Ration to maintain proper body condition. Thirty days before farrowing, gradually increase the amount fed so that at farrowing time each sow or gilt is consuming 6-8 lb daily.

• Lactating sows and gilts: Feed a limited amount (2-4 lb) of this product on the day of farrowing. Gradually increase the amount fed so that 7-10 days after farrowing the sows and gilts are either on full feed or to the desired level for lactating animals.

• Developing gilts: Remove gilts from the finishing lots at approx. 150 lb. Feed each developing gilt 5 lb of this product daily until “flushing” at approx. 8 months of age. One week prior to breeding, the gilts should receive 6-8 lb daily of this product.

• Boars: Feed each boar 4-5 lb of this product daily during the non-breeding season and 5-7 lb daily during the breeding season. Adjust the amount fed to maintain proper body weight.
