This year theHSBC Colombo Fashion has collaborated with five retailerscreating a designer retailer programmed to provide Sri Lankandesigners the much needed exposure and opportunity to expandtheir retail presence and business growth in Sri Lanka.

Under this programmed five established retailersTrunk, Cantaloupe Boutique, Aakshii, Melache andCotton Collection will provide Sri Lankan designersthe necessary infrastructure as well as the customerbase to market and sell their designs.

Far from being just a glamorous fashion show, HSBC CFW’s aim hasfrom the beginning been to raise the standards of the localdesigners. Having worked on this ethos for over nine years, consumers are now showing the change as local designer clothingbecomes increasingly sought after.

This trend has seen an increase in homegrown labels, changing thepattern of what consumers want and look for. It is now considered“chic” to wear a Sri Lankan designed outfit.

CFW President and Director, Ajai Vir Singh said, “Our objectivehas always been to create opportunities for new and establishedSri Lankan designers domestically and internationally. This year,CFW has taken focused steps to enhance these objectives bycreating strategic alliances and ventures that would provide acohesive platform for designers and the fashion industry in SriLanka from a holistic perspective.”

Our focus by tying up with the retailers is to increasecommercial activity, Singh added. Being the only South Asian country fashion extravaganza thatrepresents many international designers from the region, CFW hasalso now been positioned and seen as the hub for Spring/Summerresort wear.

LA Fashion Week 2008 controversy

In 2008, there were numerous celebrity fashion designersshowcasing their designs at LA's Fashion Week. Many peoplebelieved that, because of this new surge of "celebs-as-trendsetters", some fashion regulars and legitimate designers didnot attend the 2008 fashion event. Instead, attendees turnedtheir attention to the designs of "The Hills" star Lauren Conrad, who debuted her collection during the week, Nicky Hilton, and ThePussycat Dolls.

Sue Wong was one of the designers that openly voiced her opinionabout celebrity designers. Wong calls the emerging trend"absolutely bogus." Wong is usually a regular at the Mercedes-Benz LA Fashion Week, but decided not to show in 2008, claimingshe wanted to concentrate on doing something "different." "Sure, every celebrity and his brother wants to be a fashion designer",said Wong, who has been designing since 1968. "It's not likeanybody can pick it up and do it. It's a science. You need toknow fit and construction." Wong has also claimed that thecelebrities are just capitalizing on their "15 minutes of fame."Normally, up-and-coming designers would not get the kind ofexposures celebrities get for their clothing lines.

Lauren Conrad has tried to defend herself against the criticismsand pressures put on her before her fashion launch. Conrad, whohas trained at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandisingin Los Angeles, said the additional pressure thrust upon herFashion Week debut made her nervous while working on the line. She described it as "California chic", basing this season on arecent trip to Paris reflected in simple, clean piecesaccessorized with berets, netting, leather gloves, bows andlace."I will probably never have the respect I want in thefashion industry, but I can work hard every day to try and provemyself", Conrad said. "Can I really be criticized for takingadvantage on an opportunity that allows me to have what I'vealways wanted?"

Wong still voiced her skepticism. "Let's see whether she cansurvive and thrive. It takes so much dedication", she said. "Yougotta really pay your dues to be a serious artist." A review byJenny Peters of Fashion Wire Daily criticized her debut line, writing, "There was absolutely nothing new or innovative in hercollection."[4]

Men's Fashion Week

Dating back to 2009-2010 Fashion Week producers in New York,London, Paris, Los Angeles, Singapore and Vancouver have pushedto provide a platform for a growing apparel segment - menswear -by creating a separate Fashion Week (weekend or day) for menswearfashion designers and brands - Men's Fashion Week. "Designer'ssay that debuting their collections in September - three monthsafter Milan and Paris hold their Men's Fashion Week - is bad forbusiness. Merit to the apparel segment, traditional womensweardesigners such as Vera Wang recently announced that they will belaunching new menswear divisions.

Men's Fashion Week is held twice a year in major cities acrossthe globe typically in January (Autumn/Winter) and June(Spring/Summer). The fashion industry event is held for fashionprofessionals and fashion occult. Designers and brands showcaseupcoming collections to press, media, stylists, buyers, fashiontrailblazers and, in some cases, the national public. In recentyears, designers have tried making the esoteric experienceavailable to the general public by broadcasting their runwayshows via the World Wide Web.

Universal support for menswear designers is expected to result inMen's Fashion Week launches across the globe. In January 2012London announced that it would dedicate an entire weekend tomenswear fashion designers. Singapore dedicated a few days tomen's shows. Los Angeles followed suit launching Men's FashionWeek LA in 2012. Additionally, Vancouver does Men's Fashion Week.Among other cities, New York has supported the developments in

Australian Fashion Week

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia isan annual fashion industry event, currently sponsored by Mercedes-Benz andshowcasing the latest seasonalcollections from Australian and AsiaPacific Designers.

Australian Fashion Week is an industryfashion week intended for retail buyersto buy forthcoming spring/summer collections directly fromdesigners and manufacturers, as opposed to a consumer fashionweek, which showcases clothes currently available instore and istargeted to fashion consumers.

As of 2013 it is held at Carriageworks in Redfern, Sydney, inApril of each year.[2] Previously it had been held in April/May atthe International Passenger Terminal at Sydney's Circular Quay, and prior to that at Fox Film Studios, Moore Park and Melbourne'sSt Kilda pier.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia has helped bring attentionto a number of Australian designers such as Lisa Ho, Alex Perry,Zimmermann, Toni Maticevski, Collette Dinnigan, Leona Edmiston,J'Aton Couture, Ericaamerica, Easton Pearson and Gwendolynne.

History

The event was the brainchild of PR consultant and former skimagazine reporter Simon Lock. Launched in 1996, in its debut yearthe event featured shows by Australian designers including AkiraIsogawa, Alex Perry and Wayne Cooper. The event had mixedsuccess; British fashion writer Susan Owens wrote a scathingreview dubbing it "Fashion Weak" and writing that 25 broken-hearted designers had thrown away their money.

In 2005, event founder Simon Lock sold the event and its parentcompany Australian Fashion Innovators to the New York-basedInternational Management Group. The deal was rumoured to havebeen worth several million dollars.

Rosemount Estate wineries acquired naming rights from Mercedes-Benz in 2006 and the event was renamed Rosemount AustralianFashion Week (RAFW), but the principal sponsorship passed back toMercedes-Benz in 2011.

Lock worked with IMG for the next five years before departing thecompany in 2010. In 2011 he was presented with the AustralianFashion Laureate award, the first non-designer to receive it. Atthe time he was building a ski hotel in Japan and spending moretime with his children.

Highlights and criticism

Australian Fashion Week has attracted criticism of being out ofsync with the global fashion market; some popular designerspulled out of the 2012 event in order to prepare forinternational events.

The event has also been criticised for featuring inexperiencedemerging designers rather than big names, that its collectionsare conspicuously 'influenced' by European designers, and that it

resorts to cheap theatrics that have included everything fromAfghan hounds to midgets in lederhosen.

However, fashion journalist Marion Hume argues that the non-participation of established designers is welcome. "It lets thosedesigners grow [by going overseas] and gives space for youngerones to come up,” she said. “It’s a natural progression and showsa healthiness in Australian Fashion Week.”

The event relies heavily on the participation of internationalcelebrities. In 1997, supermodel Linda Evangelista's appearancein the Alex Perry show drew international attention to the event.Eva Herzigova donned a $500,000 pearl bikini to launchTigerlily’s first runway show in 2001.

Jade Jagger modelled for Charlie Brown in 2005.[12] Dita Von Teesewas a guest of honour in 2007, giving a sexy performance thatfeatured her straddling a giant MAC lipstick. Singer Macy Grayperformed at the Marcs show in 2008, and celebrity fashionblogger Susie Bubble covered the 2010 event.

2001 saw some notorious appearances of animals as a runwaygimmick. Model Kristy Hinze wore a snakeskin bikini with a livesnake draped around her shoulders. It began to wrap itself aroundher neck, to her evident discomfort. Meanwhile, streetwear labelKsubi (then named Tsubi) released 169 live rats onto the runway, one of which was killed, prompting an RSPCA investigation.

Los Angeles Fashion Week

Los Angeles Fashion Week takes place each March (for fallcollections) and October (for spring collections) in locationsthroughout the Los Angeles area. Various producers hold eventsduring L.A. Fashion Week, including Style Fashion Week, ProjectEthos, Los Angeles Fashion Council, CONCEPT, and Africa FashionWeek Los Angeles.

History

Los Angeles Fashion Week started in the middle of the 20thcentury with "press week" and the invitation of fashionjournalists to see collections from, and in, Southern California.

Since the late 1990s, Los Angeles Fashion Week has beenrepresented and coordinated by a loose consortium of L.A. fashiondesigners, journalists, and marketers interested in its success.Among the longest running Fashion Week exhibitions since thattime was Gen Art, which last showed in Los Angeles in 2010. In2002, IMG's fashion division, which produces Mercedes-BenzFashion Week in New York, made its first foray west, withMercedes-Benz Shows LA in downtown Los Angeles at The Standardhotel. Simultaneously, Davis Factor and Dean Factor producedSmashbox Fashion Week Los Angeles at Smashbox Studios in CulverCity. Dozens of designers showed their collections tojournalists, celebrities, family and friends at these twocentralized venues, while others still chose to show theircollections in unique off site venues such as nightclubs, privateestates, train stations, churches and lofts. In 2003, IMG andSmashbox united under one banner to streamline services andvenues, choosing the Factor-owned Smashbox Studios Culver Citylocation over downtown Los Angeles venues. The relationshipbetween IMG and Smashbox Studios lasted for five years, with theOctober 2008 shows marking their final presentation together. InOctober 2005, the now-defunct LA Fashion Awards debuted tocelebrate and honor the very best of California fashion. The

annual Awards were timed at the closing of Fashion Week and theopening of Market Week in October, at the service of both retailstore buyers and press. A nominating committee of more than fortyof LA's top fashion journalists, merchandisers, stylists, designers and marketplace experts participate in the selectionprocess. Among past winners are educator Rosemary Brantley;retailers Ron Herman, Fred Segal, Cameron Silver and ChristosGarkinos; designers Trina Turk, Monique Lhuillier and Max Azria;fashion innovators Nony Tochterman of Petro Zillia, Rozae Nicholsand Juan Carlos Obando; journalist Rose Apodaca; stylist AriannePhillips; web publisher DailyCandy; event producer Gen Art;brands American Apparel, Volcom, J Brand, Bebe, Guess; and thetelevision show Project Runway. The program is produced by LAFashion Awards, LLC, which was co-founded by fashion industryveterans Jennifer Uner and Mary Hill with the support of severalvisionary sponsors and the endorsement of local fashion industrynon-profit organizations California Fashion Association, FashionGroup International of Los Angeles, Fashion BusinessIncorporated, the Fashion District BID, and also the Los AngelesCounty Economic Development Corporation and WTCA. The Awards wereplaced on hiatus in October 2008 after sponsorship support wasput on hold in the wake of the financial market meltdown thatSeptember. This annual program is expected to return in 2009.

In February 2007, artist Peter Gurnz, developer Gary Warfel, anddowntown resident Brady Westwater - all members of the DowntownLos Angeles Neighborhood Council (DLANC) - created an alternativeFashion Week venue in Downtown Los Angeles, for the first timesince IMG moved their production to Smashbox Studios in 2003. Itwas produced by a local arts organization, BOXeight, founded byartist/designer Peter Gurnz. In Spring 2007, after just 6 weeksof preparation, BOXeight Fashion Week had its first show at theLos Angeles Theater. In Fall 2007, it moved to Vibiana LA, thenewly restored Cathedral of Saint Vibiana. In 2008, it movedagain, this time eastward to BOXeight's headquarters on thefringe of downtown's warehouse district, which added furtherpatina to its independent street credibility.

New York Fashion Week, held in February and September of eachyear, is a biannual series of events (generally lasting 7–9 days)when international fashion collections are shown to buyers, thepress and the general public. It consists of numerous brandedevents, including Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week New York and MADEFashion Week, as well as numerous independent fashion productionsaround town. It is one of four major fashion weeks in the world, along with those in Paris, London, and Milan.

New York Fashion Week vs. Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week

New York Fashion Week is a citywide series of twice-annuallyoccurring fashion events, which has multiple producers. DuringNew York Fashion Week, IMG produces "Mercedes-Benz Fashion WeekNew York," one of several international Mercedes-Benz Fashion

Weeks, which also take place in Miami, Berlin, Russia,Australia, and Istanbul, among other locations.

Leading designers will often showcase separately from Mercedes-Benz-sponsored events.

For Fall 2014, Oscar de la Renta and Vera Wang will showindependently from IMG / Mercedes-Benz. Although Michael Kors,Diane von Fürstenberg and Carolina Herrera were originallyrumored to be departing, they will show with Mercedes-Benz inFebruary 2014.

Origin

The first New York Fashion Week (which was then called "PressWeek") was the world's first ever organized fashion week. Firstheld in 1943, the event was designed to attract attention awayfrom the French fashion during World War II, when fashionindustry insiders were unable to travel to Paris to see Frenchfashion shows. Fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert organized anevent she called "Press Week" to showcase American designers forfashion journalists, who had previously neglected theirinnovations. (Buyers were not admitted to the shows, and insteadhad to visit designers' showrooms.) Press Week was a success, andfashion magazines like Vogue, which were normally filled withFrench designs, increasingly featured American fashion.

Location

In 1994, the event was moved to its former site in Bryant Park byFern Mallis, where it was held inside a series of large whitetents in the almost-block-long park. Admission is by invitationonly, to the fashion industry, fashion press, assortedcelebrities, and internet based fashion press (e.g., District L,Fashionista, FWD, and The Fashion Bomb). Beginning in February2009 (showing Fall 2009), many designers opted out of their usualBryant Park tent fashion shows because of the poor economy andheld smaller presentations.

At the Fall 2009 Fashion Week, the public got a taste oftechnology as it is shaping the future of fashion. It is not onlymaking it cheaper and easier for designers to create theircollections, it is also saving them travel time as many broadcasttheir lines over the Internet. Many designers opted to not onlymarket online but also sell exclusively online. Designer NormaKamali and the Polo Ralph Lauren Rugby brand both have anapplication for the Apple iPhone. In the Vivienne Tam show, models walked the runway carrying Hewlett Packard mini notebookcomputers instead of the expected handbag. Mercedes-Benz

officially became the sponsor of the event, and New York FashionWeek was called "Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week" from then.

Because of the recession affecting most of the world, designerswere stepping outside of the box for fall 2009. In previousyears, fashion houses would be expecting costs up to $750,000 toproduce a quality runway show. The idea of using mannequins todisplay clothing was used by established designers Betsey Johnsonand Vera Wang as a way to cut model and runway costs - even themannequins themselves can be rented instead of bought.[20] MaraHoffman, Sergio Davila and Nicholas K saved 40 percent of theircosts by combining their separate lines into one show. Anothertrend seen during fall 2009 Fashion Week was recession friendlyfashion. A number of pieces displayed were items that could beworn in the fall and carry over to the spring. A popular staplewas bold color dressed that could be worn over a turtleneck incolder weather and stand alone in the spring; convertible blazerswere introduced by Vera Wang and Karen Walker as a way to getdouble the wear out of one piece.

The Lincoln Center forthe Performing Arts offers an additional 17,000 square feet ofspace, but the location change is still receiving mixedreviews. There initially appeared to be a trend toward darker andmore somber designs.

2012

the brand visiting four major cities: New York City, Miami, LasVegas, and Los Angeles.

The 2006 and 2007 shows were held at the Kodak Theatre in LosAngeles. Critical review

The early webcasts were criticized for poor connection and thosethat could were subjected to low video quality. One critic fromThe New York Times described the initial 20th-century webcastexperience as having felt like he was "watching a stripteasethrough a keyhole".

Some critics have described the 21st-century televised editionsof the show as pornographic, while others have described it asboth "outright commercialism" and an infomercial. The FederalCommunications Commission has received complaints regarding thebroadcast, but no fines have been imposed, with the FCC,following the 2001 airing, citing the First Amendment and statingthat "sexual or excretory activities or organs in a patentlyoffensive manner as measured by contemporary community standardsfor the broadcast medium" were not broadcast. In the initial 2001

airing ABC blurred the screen on particularly sheer lingerie. This enabled the show to pass muster with its internal BroadcastStandards and Practices department and to achieve the TV-14rating. In 2002, the National Organization for Women protestedthe show calling it a "soft-core porn infomercial. They werejoined in protest by the Parents Television Council and otherwatchdog organizations. CBS has given past shows TV-14 ratings, which is a warning that the show may contain material unsuitablefor children age 14 and under. Nonetheless some affiliates havechosen not to air the show in past years including FisherBroadcasting affiliates in Idaho. To this day, LondonBroadcasting Company in Texas refuses to air the show. In 2009,the American Decency Association organized email letters ofprotests to sponsors of the show including AT&T, Kentucky FriedChicken, Netflix, Nikon, and Reebok.

Fantasy Bra

Typically, one model is chosen among the Angels to wear abejeweled bra dubbed the "Fantasy Bra". It was first advertisedin the Victoria's Secret catalog, but since 2001 has been worn in

the Fashion Shows. Prior to each Fashion Show, Victoria's Secretcontracts a renowned jewelry designer to craft the bra to be usedas a focal point for promoting the fashion show and as acenterpiece within it. The company offers the Fantasy Bra forsale as "the ultimate holiday" gift. However, only thecenterpiece from the 2004 Heavenly "70" Fantasy Bra and the 2012Floral Fantasy Bra and Gift Set have found a buyer. If notbought, the bras are dismantled after a year. Heidi Klum has wornthe Fantasy Bra in three different years. Gisele Bündchen, TyraBanks, Karolina Kurkova, and Adriana Lima have each worn twoFantasy Bras.

This year CapeTown Fashion Week was officially positioned as South Africa’snational Spring/Summer fashion platform. The CTFC prides itselfon having helped to create a platform which not only featuresvarious industry heavy weights but also continuallyfeatures exciting new talent, local industry has to offer.

“AFI has always been a long-standing supporter of untapped designtalent and the development of emerging designers. We couldn’t behappier to be the proud hosts of this fantastic initiative by theFashion Council.”

-Dr. Precious Moloi-Motsepe, Executive Chairperson of AfricanFashion International (AFI) –

A fashion education subcommittee was initially established by theCTFC to address issues within fashion education. Soon hereafterthe subcommittee identified that a professional platform toshowcase the best of fashion final year undergraduates, in theWestern Cape, was needed. The subcommittee also anticipated thatthis new platform would open up business and employmentopportunities for post-graduates within industry and media. InNovember 2008 the CTFC sponsored and hosted The Graduate Show forthe first time. The Cape Peninsula University of Technology, CapeTown College of Fashion and Design as well as the Design Academyof Fashion participated in The Graduate Show and showcased thebest of their talent to industry and media. Winners of the eventwere also invited to apply to participate in the following year’sCape Town Fashion Week as well as the CTFC’s Fashion for BusinessProgramme. In 2009 the CTFC secured the attachment of “TheGraduate Show” to Cape Town Fashion Week.

In August 2010, Foschini sponsored and presented The GraduateShow at Cape Town Fashion Week. Both the CTFC and Foschini have avested interest in promoting the best of graduate talent in SouthAfrica.  The Graduate Show is divided into two sections:

The Creative Category:

This first part of the show is a vehicle for recognition of theWestern Cape’s top graduate talent in fashion design. This isdriven by the CTFC Education Subcommittee, which consists ofmembers from recognised design schools in the Western Cape, who

curate the best of student talent in their respective final yearclasses, all of whom are presented to an industry panel in orderfor finalists for the show, to be decided upon.

The Commercial Category:

This part of the show stems from the original idea of theFoschini/ Nokia Design Awards, which has been running since 2002and which has become one of Foschini’s biggest social investmentprojects. Fashion students from all over the country submit theirentries for a chance to design trend-driven collections with aretail interpretation and six finalists are presented with theopportunity to showcase their commercial designs at Cape TownFashion Week, to be judged by big industry players.

“The Graduate Show is a wonderful outlet for new and upcomingtalent to be discovered straight out of school. This show hasbeen a great success here in the Western Cape, and what theFoschini/ Nokia Design Awards bring to it is a launching pad forrecognising graduate achievement nationally”.- Alex Harris, Divisional Merchandising Director, Foschini/ BoardMember, CTFC

EASTERN CAPE FASHION WEEK ANNOUNCEDAnother fashion week has been added to the calendar, the EasternCape Fashion Week. Port Elizabeth designer, Xoliswa Hudson isspearheading the initiative which aims to raise awareness ofEastern Cape designers. "The Eastern Cape is under-representedwhen it comes to big national fashion events and it is time thatthe designers here get some recognition," said Xoliswa, in aninterview by journalist Eleanor Douglas-Meyers for The Herald.

The plethora of local fashion weeks indicated to Xoliswa that thefashion industry is booming and that more localised fashion weekswere necessary to elevate the designers working outside of themajor geographical centres of the country. Many well known South

African designers like Bongiwe Walaza, Nandipha Nandikiza and theSun Goddess team originated from the Eastern Cape but had to moveto Johannesburg to increase their profile.

"This leaves other provinces without a showcase for developingtalent," she said.

The fashion week will be taking place at the Boardwalk Conferencecentre from Wednesday, 9 September 2009, to Saturday, 12September.

According to Xoliswa the organisers of the fashion week hope todiscover and develop raw talent around the Eastern Cape.

"A selection committee will be appointed from seven districtmunicipalities within the province to select promising designersand crafters," she said.

The designers and crafters will be chosen during shows held inthe various "fashion hubs". Ten designers and five crafters fromeach district will be given the opportunity to showcase theirwork on the ramp, while a few others will be exhibiting theirwork at allocated stalls.

Skills development also will form part of the event. Seminarswill be held during the morning sessions. Seminars will be run onhow to source finance and funding, export products and usetechnology in design.

The event will kick off with an official launch at the Boardwalkon 25 July.

Pretoria Fashion Week

One thing is clear. The conveners of Pretoria Fashion Week havedone little to no research into the viability of such an event.Had they done so, they will know that no fashion commentator, blogger or journalist is in support of ludicrous initiatives thatlack substance, disguising as much needed platforms for localdesigners. Had these people, who obviously have lots of dough tothrow around on useless projects, done any research they wouldunderstand that organising yet another "fashion week" isdetrimental to the industry as it segments rather than builds it.What this petty initiative will do, like all other such ludicrousideas, is to promise some talented aspiring designers some orother form of recognition and what it will deliver is muchdisappointment and sheer confusion about what it takes to be adesigner worthy of a fashion week showcase.

Few designers in South Africa are worthy of this and thanks tothe likes of Pretoria Fashion Week the standard will drop to anew low.

I appeal to fashion writers, bloggers and editors with an ounceof respect for what they do to boycott this sort of insult on thefashion industry. I also appeal to aspiring designers to respecttheir craft by refining it and by aiming to showcase at crediblefashion week platforms. Anyone who entertains this stupidity isobviously a fashion slave who lacks substance and believesfashion is about little more than pieces of cloth sewn togetherto make anything that resembles a garment.
