Foreword

Since the first edition of National Marine Industry Forum (NMIF) in 2010, this series of forum has emerged as Malaysia’s premiere marine industry gathering.

Over the years, NMIF has featured topical presentations on various topics on the marine industry by captains of the industry and experts sharing their knowledge, experience and insights. Some of the deliberations have helped to resolve issues in the industry and assist policymakers in formulating plans for the development of the marine industry. Most notably is the formulation of Malaysia Shipbuilding / Ship Repair Strategic Plan 2020 or SBSR 2020 which provides a roadmap for the growth and devel-opment of this important industry. This shows the influence of this forum in yielding useful outcomes for the better-ment of this industry which supports Malaysia’s trade and many marine economic activities such as offshore oil and gas exploration and production, marine engineering, port operations, fishery, marine tourism and maritime defence and security.

This fifth edition of NMIF bears the theme ‘Navigating the Wave of Industry 4.0 : Towards Attaining Competitiveness’. This is timely given the sweeping wave known as the Industry 4.0 which in essence describes today’s highly digitalized world in which machines of all kinds are connected with one anoth-er, making it easier, faster and more accurate for people, businesses and industries to communicate in real-time with one another.

Underscoring the emphasis placed by the Government on this ‘digital revolution’, YAB Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad recently launched the National Policy on Industry 4.0. The Prime Minis-ter was spot on by saying that the limitless growth potential from digital adoption amid the so-called fourth Industrial Revolution boils down to the application of available new technologies. These tech-nologies that provide the backbone of Industry 4.0 – such as Internet of Things, Big Data Analytics, artificial intelligence, cloudcomputing and virtual reality, among others – are already available to us and have even been used in several industries and our daily activities.

The application of these technologies and other IT machineries, gadgets, systems and solutions have enabled us to communicate quickly and seamlessly and share huge amounts of data across the globe. Industry 4.0 has truly become a game-changer that has created an indelible impact to individuals, businesses, industries and modern civilization. There is just no escaping the changes that the wave of the revolution brings.

It is against this backdrop that 5NMIF is organized to highlight the sweeping changestaking place arising from this digital revolution and to outline the issues, challenges andopportunities it brings. Being an industry whose extent is global and whose importanceto world trade and economy is paramount, there is just no escaping the effects of Industry4.0 to its practitioners and across the supply chains they serve. As such, industry playersmust strive to develop an understanding of the components of the Industry 4.0 and graspthe implications and potential it brings. This is in line with the call by the Prime Ministerfor us to apply the technologies available within Industry 4.0 to address issues concerningbusinesses, including the environment, health and safety of the workforce, and enhancingthe efficiency of supply chains.

I would like to express my utmost appreciation the Ministry of International Trade &Industries (MITI) and the support of the Government towards the marine industry and alsoits intent to see Malaysia flourish in the digital economy. This ardent support inspires usin the marine industry to work hard at making Malaysia a globally competitive nation inthe marine industry and to adopt to Industry 4.0 and seize the opportunities it presents. To the speakers, panellists, moderators and participants, I wish you a fruitful forum.Thank you very much for your support towards 5NMIF and we hope to count on yoursupport in future editions of this forum.

Established in 1988, Peimg1n Marine Sdn. Bhd. is the brainchild of Oh Kean Shen and Pheh Hoe Huat, two old friends who share a common love of the sea. Although a mechanical engineer by training, Oh Kean Shen, whose family already had a thriving shipyard business, took up the reins of the business upon his father’s retirement.

Even in those early days, Oh saw the huge potential of the pleasure boat industry in the region and decided to undertake the challenge of intro-ducing imported recreational crafts into the market. His search for a reliable partner led him to Pheh Hoe Huat who was then operating a suc-cessful automobile repair business and garnering the custom of many owners of exotic cars in Penang with his in-depth engineering knowledge.

With more than 25 years’ of experience between them, they are guided by the core principles of honest advice and good service. Boats should meet customer requirements and customer education is important to ensure that there is ample guidance to operational procedures, main-tenance and boating knowledge for each boat owner. Today, Pen Marine is a leading player in the pleasure boat industry in Malaysia and the Southeast-Asian region.

Pheh too, had been involved in boating from a young age and an avid angler for more than two decades. His vast boating experience, technical know-how plus his uncanny ability to interpret customer requirements was exactly what was needed. The resultant partnership has been both successful and synergistic with Oh leading the sales effort and Pheh heading the technical operations.
