Radar gauging – superiorreliability and accuracy
Saab TankRadar Pro provides outstanding
reliability. The gauges have no moving parts
and the only part inside the tank is the
antenna. Saab TankRadar Pro uses the non-
contact measurement technique radar for
trouble-free and maintenance-free operation.
This results in a competitive and cost-
effective solution for level gauging app-
lications.

The radar waves are almost unaffected by
dirt on the antenna, tank atmosphere,
regardless of liquid type in the tank, its
temperature or pressure. That is a big
advantage compared to other types of non-
contact level measurement techniques such
as ultrasonic and laser.
The high sensitivity of Saab TankRadar Pro
makes it suitable for a vast range of products
and tanks. No matter the height of the tank
or if there are turbulent surface conditions,
Saab TankRadar Pro will continue to perform
consistently and predictably.
When talking about sensitivity we are
actually describing the signal/noise ratio of
the measuring equipment. The higher the
ratio the more precise and reliable are the
readings obtained.
The new TankRadar Pro series has an
outstanding signal/noise ratio (sensitivity)
with an accuracy of ± 5 mm.

Three basic Saab TankRadar Pro
versions – Lite, Standard and Gold –
offer complete coverage of most level
measuring applications. And of course
you can get your own customized
version for very special requirements.
The choice has never been easier.
Designed for tanks without internal struc-
tures outside hazardous areas, for example
storage tanks.
Saab TankRadar Pro – Lite uses Fast
Fourier Transformation (FFT), one of the most
widely used signal processing techniques, to
ensure rapid level measurements level with
an accuracy of ± 10 mm.
The Lite version can optionally be
equipped with Saab’s echofixer, FHAST™ for
increased accuracy and MET™, as well as
various antennas.

The Standard version of Saab TankRadar Pro
is suitable for most tanks, even those with
echo-disturbing internal structures, for
example tanks with agitators or baffles. It is
also suitable for spherical and bullet tanks.
This version uses FFT with the addi-
tion of Saab’s echofixer. Saab’s echofixer is a
package that continuously maps out all ra-
dar interference sources. This gives a reliable
level measurement also in agitated tanks.
Saab TankRadar Pro – Standard
Saab TankRadar Pro – Gold
The Gold version of Saab TankRadar Pro is
the most advanced version with an ope-
rating accuracy of ± 5 mm. It is suitable for
most tanks, also tanks with multiple agi-
tators, beams, heating coils and other
sources of false echoes that can seriously
compromise level gauging accuracy. For
example in agitated batch tanks, and other
tanks where higher accuracy and resolution
is required.
Saab TankRadar Pro – Gold includes
FFT, Multiple Echo Tracking (MET™), Saab’s
echofixer and FHAST™ as standard. An
agitator can present a complicated series of
false echoes when the liquid is at the same
level as the agitator. In such a situation the
MET™ enhancement enables the sensor to
consistently identify the correct echo. MET™
further increases the radar echo resolution
around the disturbing echoes.
Saab TankRadar Pro – Standard. Perfect foragitated tanks.
Saab TankRadar Pro – Gold performs accuratemeasurements in tanks with agitators, and withimproved resolution around disturbances.

Outstanding technology forlevel measurementWhen designing a radar level gauge
choosing the right technical plat-
form is essential to achieve reliable
level measurement.
The time needed for the radar signal to
travel down to the surface and back again is
proportional to the distance between the
transmitter and the surface. Thus, the
product level can be calculated if the time is
known.
There are two main modulation
techniques: The pulse technique, which is
based on transmitting a radar pulse towards
the liquid surface, and actually measuring
the time for the pulse to return. Since it is
difficult to make accurate measurements of
such a small time interval, this technique is
only suitable for low accuracy applications.
The high performance radar level
gauge Saab TankRadar Pro uses the other
method – the optimal Frequency Modulated
Continuous Wave (FMCW) method.
The tank level is determined by processing thefrequency difference between the transmitted andreflected signals (FMCW).

A L W A Y S O N T H E L E V E L
15
Accurate and reliable measurement– the FMCW method
Using FMCW, Saab TankRadar Pro trans-
mits a microwave signal with a con-
tinuously varying frequency towards the
liquid surface. When the reflected signal
returns to the Gauge, it is mixed with the
outgoing signal.
Since the transmitter continuously
changes the frequency of the transmitted
signal, there will be a difference in frequency
between the transmitted and the reflected
signals.
The gauge mixes the two signals,
resulting in a low frequency signal which is
proportional to the distance to the liquid
surface, and can be measured very accura-
tely. This permits fast, reliable and accurate
level measurements.
The FMCW method: The distance (d) is calculated by measuring the frequency difference (Df) between the transmittedfrequency (f1) and the reflected frequency (f0).

10 GHz – the optimum frequency
Self-calibrating six times per second
Choosing the right microwave
frequency is essential in radar level
gauging. Higher frequencies give
shorter wavelengths which are more
sensitive to vapour, foam and conta-
mination. Up towards 24 GHz even
a small amount of water vapour is
enough to absorb the microwaves.
Lower frequency give longer
wavelength and wider beam angle,
which results in a lot of interference
echoes from the walls and agitators.
The optimum frequency has
been found to be around 10 GHz. Saab
TankRadar Pro is the sixth
generation of radar gauges from
Saab Tank Control that uses this
frequency.
While Saab TankRadar Pro con-
stantly measures the liquid level it
also sends a reference signal to a
built-in calibration line with a
known internal “distance”. Thus, it
is actually self-calibrating six times
per second – day after day, year
after year.
This feature eliminates down-
time for maintenance or recalibra-
tion procedures.
Saab TankRadar Pro is self-calibrating six times per second, throughoutits lifetime.
The optimum radar frequency is approximately 10 GHz.

Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT)
Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT) is the
simplest and one of the most widely used
signal processing techniques. FFT works
with relatively low resolution and accuracy.
The powerful Digital Signal Processor (DSP)
in Saab TankRadar Pro performs fast FFT
calculations of the incoming tank signal, and
provides a frequency spectrum that is
analysed to find the liquid surface. Since the
frequency is related to the distance between
the transmitter and the reflecting object, the
spectrum can be mapped to corresponding
tank levels.
FFT ensures fast level measurements with relativelylow resolution and accuracy (±10 mm).

Saab’s echofixer – improves the disturbance echo handling
Saab’s echofixer is a software module that
improves the reliability of the level gauge
when used in tanks with agitators or other false
echo sources.
When there are echo-disturbing objects
in the tank such as agitators, baffles, mixers,
pipes, heating coils etc., the DSP must be
able to distinguish between the actual liquid
surface and the interfering echoes. Saab’s
echofixer adds sophisticated functionality to
improve the ability of Saab TankRadar Pro
to separate disturbing echoes from the
surface echo.
Saab’s echofixer registers echoes accor-
ding to certain criteria, thus making it possible
to use sophisticated methods for adapting
the measurement to various situations.
Dynamic and real-time updated information
from previous measurements is used to
make intelligent decisions based on collec-
ted information by the gauge itself. Saab’s
echofixer can also use information provided
by the operator as a complement to the
automatically collected data. The high
performance of the DSP makes it possible to
handle complex measurement situations.
Saab’s echofixer improves the reliability of the levelgauge when used in tanks with agitators or other falseecho sources.

Fast High Accuracy SignalTechnique (FHAST™)– improves accuracy
Multiple Echo Tracking (MET™)– improves measurements in echo-disturbed
In order to further improve the measure-ment accuracy, Saab’s Fast High AccuracySignal Technique (FHAST™) can be appliedto the resulting signal. The FHAST™ filterlimits the region around the liquid surface tobe analysed, resulting in a much moreefficient signal processing.
FHAST™ provides significantly fasterand more precise signal processing by usingthe processor capacity on vital information.
By using a FHAST™ filter a significantincrease of the measurement accuracy, up to±5 mm, can be obtained.
In tanks with echo-disturbing objects, itmay be necessary to further increase theresolution, by adding the Multiple EchoTracking (MET™) module. MET™ increasesthe resolution of the radar “image” so thatthe sensor can identify genuine echoes moreeasily, and improve the accuracy in echo-disturbed areas.
MET™ provides even more advancedalgorithms which efficiently handle inter-fering echoes. An agitator, for example, cancause interference when the sensor attemptsto differentiate echoes from the liquid andagitator surfaces. MET™ measures on thedisturbance as accurate as on the surfacelevel, making it much easier to distinguishbetween the echoes.
The FHAST™ filter limits the region around the liquidsurface to be analysed, resulting in a much moreefficient signal processing.
In tanks with many disturbing objects, MET™ increasesthe resolution of the radar “image” so that the sensorcan identify the liquid level from disturbances.

Sensitivity – the quality to handletough conditions
Saab TankRadar Pro has an ultra-
high sensitivity resulting in outstand-
ing reliability. For all radar gauges, a
certain amount of microwave ener-
gy has to return to the gauge. Only if
the reflected signal is sufficiently
stronger than the noise, a reliable
measurement can be made.
This is why sensitivity (or
signal/noise ratio) is one of the most
important qualities that differentiate
high quality gauges from less reli-
able types of gauges. A high signal/
noise ratio makes it possible to
detect and measure weaker echoes
– which normally appear in process
tanks where conditions change (for
conditions that affect the signal
strength, please refer to the list
next page).
To ensure accurate and extre-
mely reliable gauging even in the
toughest conditions, Saab TankRadar
Pro features an ultra-high sensitivity. The signal is affected by: 1) Distance attenuation. 2) Antenna size.3) Surface conditions. 4) Dielectric constant. 5) Foam. 6) Vapour, dust.7) Dirt on the antenna. See next page.
A L W A Y S O N T H E L E V E L
A L W A Y S O N T H E L E V E L
22
The strength of the reflected signal is
affected by:
1) Distance attenuation which makes
the received radar signal weaker at
longer measuring distances.
2) Antenna size which influences the
performance substantially. A larger
antenna gives a narrower beam and
has a larger receiving area. A doub-
led area increases the signal/noise
ratio approximately six times.
3) Surface conditions such as waves
and turbulence can reduce the re-
flected energy. For process industry
applications it is practical to regard
a turbulent surface as the normal
case.
4) The dielectric constant eR. Different
types of liquids have different di-
electric constants, and can be divided
into two groups: “oil-like” and “water-
like”. The former group reflects only
a few percent of the microwave
energy, while the latter group re-
flects most of it.
5) Foam which in the worst case can
eliminate the echo, while in other
cases it may appear totally trans-
parent to the radar.
6) Vapour and dust in the tank atmosphere, which have
an influence on the performance similar to foam. This
influence is eliminated when using a frequency of
10 GHz.
7) Dirt on the antenna which affects performance in
the same way as foam. But with a highly sensitive
system like Saab TankRadar Pro, and a correctly desig-
ned and dimensioned antenna, the influence of dirt on
the antenna is reduced to a minimum.
Measuring on a turbulent water surface with a waveheight of 15 mm,corresponds to measuring on a calm hydrocarbon surface.
Of course, Saab TankRadar Pro is designed and
developed with the knowledge of these factors, thus
capable of delivering reliable measurement under any
conditions. In short – it is a gauge you can depend on,
whatever the application, partly due to its high
sensitivity.
