Our Rotary world will keep evolving as a result of innovation and creativity powered by technology. Recently, it has and will evolve even faster as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic that has taken the entire world by surprise. We all therefore must embrace the new normal ways of doing

I want to align with her postulation. Rotary as an organization build on the wealth of knowledge of individual member. Severally we can do so much but jointly, we can do even much more.

personal talent and fund towards the achievement of a Rotary goal, be they gift of life to a boy with hole in the heart, water, toilet and washroom projects, micro credit to a group of indigent people in a community or scholarship of a candidate to specialized course that will benet the general populace in the long run. Mother Theresa of blessed memory couldn’t have put it better then when she said “I can do things you cannot, you can do things I cannot, together we can do great things”.

This Rotary year we shall be witnessing a lot of changes in our Rotary life, right from the way we communicate within our clubs to how we serve members of our communities. One of the beauties of Rotary is our adaptability characteristic and the supply of physical energy by Rotarians to change with the global tide. To prevail therefore, we all must adapt very quickly to the changes around us.

It is a new Rotary year, we have every reason to be happy and joyous, I am particularly excited that a day like this has eventually come. Rotary has taught many of us how to make short and precise plans, even when we have to take one, two years or more to make them. These are plans that will affect the lives of people positively, plans that when executed will make all parties involved feel better than they were before making them. Rotary’s leadership succession has built many of us into greater leaders and better managers of resources, human capital in particular, otherwise how can a group of people passionately be doing things in communities they can never live? Rotarians execute joint projects with people of different ethnic, racial and creed background, they tolerate other people and appreciate the qualities of other people. No one person is an icon of knowledge and that is the reason why all members like in a team pulls in their

Our theme for the next twelve months as introduced by Rotary International President Holger Knaack is Rotary opens opportunities. I am in concordance with his position in his rst message to Rotarians that “Rotary is not just a club that you join, it is an invitation to endless opportunities, we believe in creating opportunities for others and ourselves . . . with friends around the world, based on our core values”

As we plan to support the members of the communities please remain safe, use your personal protective equipment and support as many people as you can that are in need. “He that needs help cannot give help”, therefore to give help you must remain safe.

Happy new year once again and please enjoy the year.

idea should be ignored, no one solution should be regarded as best t as all opportunities should be given the chance to blossom.

At the tail end of last Rotary year our organization took an opportunity to introduce a seventh area of focus. In this kaleidoscopic time there could not be any better area of focus that will advance the work of Rotary than SUPPORTING THE ENVIRONMENT. Whereas we have exemplied this in existing areas, making it a separate focus will make us channel more resources to the support of our environment. Please embrace it and prepare to take advan tage o f the opportunities it will offer in the near and later future.

things. No complaints, no regrets and no procrastinations. We must brace up and accept the challenges that comes our ways. We should be adaptive, receptive and proactive as the new Rotary world is already on the fast pace.

Our goals are clear for this year and we intend to begin to drive them from this month. Specically, our goal for membership is 50% net increase. We plan to form thirty new clubs while sustaining the existing ones and develop more Rotary leaders. Consider formation of e-clubs , this is the time to take advantage of the opportunity it portends. Conversion of Rotaract clubs into Rotary clubs and extension through new and young members into our clubs. Our Foundation our goal is One Million US Dollars with all Rotarians in our district contributing to The Rotary Foundation, leaving no club, no Rotarian in our district out of the contribution list. By the way all Rotarians are encouraged to contribute Ten Dollars to the Polio Plus Fund, this is a special project we shall all drive together.

Rotary will not stop to think of developing membership, raising fund for The Rotary Foundation nor stop executing humanitarian service projects to improve the living standard of people in the communities. It is on this premise that as people of action we should not relent on our oars in spite of the prevailing pandemic circumstance. This is the time people need Rotary more and all our clubs must continue to respond to the call of the needy. Rotary has opened that great opportunity to serve our communities even much more than ever.

On service projects we shall be encouraging clubs to plan and execute projects that are above Thirty Thousand Dollars equivalent, these projects will be regarded as Specic Signicant Signature (3S) projects. The district shall give all support to make this a reality.

This is the year of multiple opportunities, no

The COVID-19 crisis has forced all of us to adapt. This is good,

and our new Action Plan specifically calls on us to improve our

ability to adapt. But adaptation is not enough. We need to

change, and change dramatically, if we are to face the

challenges of this new age and provide the Rotary that the world

so desperately needs.

The world needs Rotary now more than ever. It is up to us to

make sure that Rotary Opens Opportunities for generations to

come.

than ever for Rotary to thrive does not guarantee that we will

succeed. The world is changing rapidly — and was doing so

even before this crisis. People were starting to move away from

regular lunch meetings and toward online gatherings.

Friendships were being cultivated and revived in social media

relationships even before most of our meetings moved to Zoom

and Skype. Younger generations have a strong desire to serve

— but have questioned whether they could play a meaningful

role in organizations like Rotary or whether they might make a

bigger impact forming different types of connections. Now is the

time to put everything on the table, test new approaches, and

prepare Rotary for the future.

This is our great challenge, not just in the next year but into the

future. It is up to us to remake Rotary for these new times — to

wholeheartedly embrace the ideas, energy, and commitment of

young people eager to find an outlet for idealism. We must

become an organization fully enmeshed in the digital age, not

one that simply looks for online ways to keep doing what we have

always done.

his does not seem like a time for great optimism, but it has to be.

TLong before Rotary was founded, the world dealt with great crises

that tested humankind’s ability to progress and endure. In the age

of Rotary, the world has faced many more catastrophes; however, we have

survived, and every step of the way, Rotary has helped the world heal.

Dear Rotarians, Rotaractors, and friends,

Governments and institutions are gaining a greater appreciation for the types

of public health partnerships that are critical to our work. People stuck at

home, eager for greater connections and hungry to help their communities,

are now embracing the values we have promoted since our beginning.

All of this is positive news, but just because there are greater opportunities

Rotary is not just a club that you join; it is an invitation to endless

opportunities. We believe in creating opportunities for others and for

ourselves. We believe that our acts of service, large and small, generate

opportunities for people who need our help, and that Rotary opens

opportunities for us to live a richer, more meaningful life, with friends around

the world, based on our core values.

Every great challenge is an opportunity for renewal and growth. I revealed

the theme of Rotary Opens Opportunities at the International Assembly in

San Diego just as the COVID-19 crisis was beginning, but these are words

that I have believed for many years.

then RI President Barry Rassin whose focus for that

Rotary year gives preference to Rotaractors around

the world.

Rotaract District ably represented by District Rotaract

Representative Elect, Adedeji Adeoluwa Windapo the

privilege to speak amidst distinguished Rotary Leaders

on a topic: ROTARACT ELEVATION

He outlined Concerns, International Recognition, and

Unique Experience of the Elevation to Rotaractors, on

a final note he said, admission of Rotaract fully by

Rotary International has raised so many controversies,

it is important that club leaders, district leaders pass

down the details of the said Elevation to distinguish the

status of Rotaractors from that of Rotarians. Even

though both are now membership type of Rotary

International.

The District Governor Elect Bola Oyebade and the

audience were astonished by the wonderful

presentation by DRRE Windapo, and had no option

than to appreciate and applaud him with a standing

ovation.

It was an astounding moment at the just concluded Rotary

District Team Training Seminar ( DTTS) 2020 held in Festival

Hotel, Festac Lagos from 21st - 22nd of February 2020,

where in attendance was Rotary/Rotaract District Leaders

trained and prepared for next Rotary year.

Three weeks later, we had 60 Rotarians, 10 other volunteers, and staff at the school ready for our first Saturday delivery. The plan included sorting food pallets dropped off by the San Antonio Food Bank in the parking lot of the school, creating separate stations for individual food items. Volunteers would then drive by each station while other volunteers loaded the items into vehicles.

We had a well-thought-out plan. But then 250 cars showed up, more than double the number we anticipated. Fortunately, our club has so many outstanding leaders that we were able to pivot in a short period of time and rearrange the drop off site, repacking food to feed as many families as possible.

It was in organizing an event to meet those needs that I learned about the power of Rotary. Our club had connection with the San Antonio Food Bank and the United Way. Within a week, we had a project confirmed and scheduled. We had offers of trucks, boxes, and anything else we needed to run the food drive, and it all came from our members.

Each family received meat, vegetables, fruit, non-dairy milk, bread, flour, and other staples. Through our third distribution, we have delivered over 100,000 pounds of food to serve approximately 5,000 people.

I knew our club was more than just a “lunch” club but I was amazed at how quickly we were able to come together to serve our community in such a meaningful way. I truly believe that when Rotarians unite in a mission, we can do anything.

Our club had adopted a local elementary school, the Martin Luther King Academy, for the 2019-20 Rotary year. We had already created a Rotary Reading Room at the school to provide a quiet place for the students to read and do homework. We also made improvements to the campus through a program we call Kingdom for Kids. We knew we could not abandon the school during this time of need. When we reached out to the school principal to ask how we could help, her answer was succinct. They needed:

Iin the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic that I learned what it truly means to be a Rotarian. When my state of

We spent an hour catching up; and then our conversation turned to service, and what we could do to help during the pandemic.

Antoni Slodkowski, who is originally from Łódź, Poland, became interested in international issues while he was a Rotary Youth Exchange student in Japan. “That year in Osaka shaped my life,” he recalls. “It gave me an incredible foundation and the courage to travel the world and spread my wings.” Slodkowski and his team of journalists received a Pulitzer Prize in 2019 for their investigation into a massacre of 10 Rohingya men in Myanmar, where the minority has been a target of ethnic cleansing.

News & Stories

A training document focused on supporting LGBTQ+ exchange students is now available to all Rotary Youth Exchange leaders. It discusses the primary goals of Rotary Youth Exchange: providing young people with opportunities not only to experience an exchange, but to develop as leaders who promote peace and justice around the world. To achieve this, everyone involved in an exchange — including students and volunteers — must be open-minded, tolerant, and supportive of one another.

Although COVID-19 still causes uncertainty globally, especially because of the risk of infection, changing international travel restrictions, and school delays and closures, some regions may be able to host exchanges safely later this Rotary year. Where districts decide it is safe, short-term exchanges can resume in October 2020 and long-term exchanges can resume in January 2021, provided districts implement specific safety requirements outlined in the RI Board’s April decision.

Connecting students and communities around the world

After reviewing the requirements, is up to districts to determine whether they can proceed with Rotary Youth Exchange programs in accordance with the new safety guidelines. If your district is concerned, the best option may be to suspend the program temporarily and consider other ways to engage young people this year, such as facilitating virtual exchanges or getting students involved with Interact or RYLA. If your district is considering moving forward with the program, it will be important to consider the risks, create a comprehensive crisis management plan, and have volunteers who can commit more time to communicating with students and families, monitoring recommendations from health authorities, and acting quickly if the situation changes.

IThe RI Board of Directors made an important decision about Rotary Youth Exchange in 2020-21 after reviewing a

Aorganization is carrying out PROJECTS. We face alot of difculties on projects.

We engage on projects that does not touch a soul rather our pockets. WHY?

Because we lack basic knowledge of what a Project is.

In our case as ROTARACTORS we are all a project manager. We need basic knowledge on the above.

Executing Process Group: Those processes are performed to complete the work dened in the project management plan to satisfy the project requirements. This is where we do all that we have planned

Project Management is application of techniques, skills, knowledge and resources to a given project to meet up with the project Objectives.

A project manager works with his/her team to achieve a said goals or objectives. We also have stakeholders. Stakeholders are people who are directly or indirectly responsible and affected by your project. We fall into scope creeps so many times. We spend ridiculous, excessive amounts on money and time. Most times we go out of scope for the project. So then how do we have well dened projects.

Initiating Process Group: It is what denes the Project and set up project objectives. This where we do feasibility studies about a said project. Its where we ask the questions of Who, where, how and when?

No matter how big or small the project is if its based on these knowledge. It will be a success.

Thus, the “issue” of flooding in Lagos results from three factors:

Unfortunately, these drainage have been blocked by indiscriminate dumping

of refuse.

b) Lack of or poor drain system and;

a) Urbanization

and health implications. Being below sea should not a problem and it is not a

big deal, as country Holland is below sea (or “under water”) but their eco-

friendly cities and good engineering designs ensured that the country is faring

well.

It is no accident that Nigeria is ranked highest in poverty and dirtiness, as

there is a link between the two. Therefore, when the Lagos State Government

through the ministry of Environment asked residents of four Local

Government Areas (LGAs) i.e. Lagos Mainland, Mushin, Ibeju-Lekki and

Ikorodu to relocate, she was making a pronouncement that affects directly

and indirectly more than 2.2 million people residents in those LGAs. This even

more alarming when one consider the over 2.2 million people with over 9.5

million people of the 14 LGAs issued a (flood) warning by the same ministry.

The economic effects/impacts needs to be quantified by Physical Planners

i.e. Town Planners in collaboration with Economic Planners i.e. Development

Economists, to put in proper perspective the economic cost of the issue of

flooding especially as regards human and loss of man hour on flooded Lagos

roads.

c) Poor waste management system

Urbanization means agglomeration of people in cities or urban areas.

Wherever people are, waste is generated. This is not a problem. It only

becomes one when it is not properly disposed, nor mechanism for reuse or

recycling.

The implications are that of health, social and economic. These may account

for the male death than female in Lagos State according to National

Population Commission (NPC). This claim has been corroborated by experts.

For according to a consultant pathologist at the Lagos State University

Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, (as reported by PM News of July 9,

2020), Dr. Francis Faduyile, “……..statistics showed that men die earlier than

women because men do the more risky jobs and “travel” more than women”.

He states further that “women tend to tolerate hypertension more than men”.

If we are to be serious about development and improving quality of lives of our

people, Government needs to put in place effective and efficient waste

disposal and management system, provide proper engineered drain system

and set up recycling plants to recycle and reuse generated waste.

The issue of flooding becomes worrisome when one put the above factor side

by side with the issue of Climate Change/Global Warming (which implies

increase rainfall) and the fact that Lagos is below sea level. This should be of

concern to people and Government because of it Psychological, socio-

economic

This problem coupled with poor drain system or total lack of it in some areas

means there will be floods whenever rain falls.

This is so because where there are drainage, it is not properly channeled and

when refuse is dispose in these poor drainage, the result is floods. There is

also problem of waste management. It is not uncommon to find road

sweepers gather sand (swept off roads) by roadsides or on walkways, which

is later pushed by either rain or breeze or both.

here are different kinds of floods. There is the storm surge from hurricanes,

Tthe runoff from snow when it melts, the overwhelmed river banks, etc. But

considering all these examples flooding is suppose to be an occasional

thing (i.e. problem). However, flooding happens consistently, either in small or

large quantities, every time rain falls to earth. People just do not tend to notice it

until it reaches the proportions of disaster i.e. issue (in contrast to “problem”

above).

I. Large quantities of rain in a short period of time (like we experience annually in

Nigeria).

Roads, Parking lots, Sidewalks, and other pavements, along with asphalt,

concrete, brick, stone, and other building materials, combine to create

impenetrable surfaces that resist the natural absorption of water. The natural

system is very good at accepting rainfall. But when water hits pavements, it creates

runoff immediately. That water has to go somewhere. So it flows wherever the

grade takes it. To account for that runoff, drainages are created to move the water

away from where it originally deposited, or house it where it in a facility, or even to

reuse it. This process-the policy, planning, engineering, implementation and

maintenance of urban water system is called storm water management. This was

probably the intention of the Lagos State Government in setting up Lagos

Wastewater Management Office (LASWAMO).

Under normal circumstances rain or other precipitation (snow, hail etc.) is absorbed

by the earth after falling. It gets absorbed by grassland, by parks, by residential

lawns or by anywhere the soil is exposed.

However, two factors can impede that absorption and they are:

II. Covering over the ground so it cannot absorb water in the first place. This is

majorly applicable in cities like Lagos, where land has been transformed into

developed cilivilisation. And without proper drain system.

As husbands lost wives, mothers lost daughters and

sisters lost brothers

For there was the Pandemic -The Influenza Virus!

My thirst for

education

Leaving behind

those who care

about me

It killed thousands more than the world war did

And my zeal to

make an exploit and

a difference

Made me seek

greener pastures

Little did we know that was a tip of the iceberg

And the most dreaded happened - war!

For with time we never realized that every visit was a

curse

And social distancing is something we knew

not

Here comes another Pandemic -The Corona

Virus!

The war was over because of the pandemic

But I came home to nothing

And my neighbour went in search of his daily

bread

Like yesteryears, I lost another loved one.

Not even to the grave of the ones I left behind

Every kiss and hug was an instrument of

death

And it was time to go home

But returned with a lung full of Corona virus
