Rear underrun protection.

GeneralFrom 1 September 2021 onwards, each new registration of vehicles within the EU must comply with the regulations in accordance with ECE-R58/03.

Rear underrun protection is usually delivered in transport mode from Scania and final fitting must follow Scania's installation instructions. Scania's installation instructions must also be followed when moving factory-fitted underrun protection. Scania's in-stallation instructions comply with the provisions of ECE-R58/03.

The 3 different profiles for rear underrun protection. Outer dimensions are given in millimetres.

Profile types according to ECE-R58/03Rear underrun protection is available with 3 different profiles depending on their area of use.

U-profileThe aluminium U-profile (1) makes it possible to fit tail lamps and registration plates well protected. The tail lamps can be ordered fitted in the U-profile.

Square profileThe aluminium square profile (2) provides better ground clearance for an underslung drawbeam than the U-profile.

Round profileThe round profile (3) made of steel is recommended for tipper trucks, for example, so that tipped gravel runs out of the underrun protection and does not accompany the vehicle out onto the road.

Transport-mounted rear underrun protection

Rear underrun protection device according to ECE-R58/03 regulations

Transport-mounted rear underrun protec-tionIf the vehicle is fitted with a transport-mounted drawbeam, it is fitted on the same end plates as the underrun beam.

More information on the type of underrun protection fitted on the vehicle is found in the vehicle’s individual chassis specification (ICS).

Conditions for final fittingThe underrun protection must be finally mounted according to Scania's installation instructions which comply with the provisions of ECE-R58/03. This is a requirement that enables the national inspection authority to issue installation approval.

Check screw jointsIMPORTANT!

• No part of the threaded part of the screws should be at the level of the end plate material

• It is prohibited to weld on components belonging to the rear underrun protection installation that have Scania component certification.

• It is prohibited to drill into components belonging to the rear underrun protection installation that have Scania component certification.

• It is prohibited to apply oil to screws and nuts

• Only the components in these instructions, end beams, tow beams and drawbeams can be fitted together with the end plate screw joints.

Check the screw joints after 2,500 km.

The tightening torque of 162 Nm is a control torque. If it clicks at this torque, the screw is sitting as it should. Otherwise, it should be renewed and tightened to 135 Nm + 60° angle (degrees).

A vehicle with any of the following vehicle specifications must be fitted with an end beam:

• Without drawbeam or tow beam

• Semi-underslung drawbeam

• Underslung drawbeam

• Low underslung drawbeam

A vehicle can be ordered without an end beam from Scania. In such a case, the vehi-cle must be fitted with an end beam that may be of a make other than Scania. In such a case, the end beam must satisfy statutory requirements for strength and rigidity.

Underrun beamUse 4 new lock nuts (part number 1 395 063) of strength class 10 with screw dimen-sion M16 to attach the underrun beam to the end plates.

Use 4 screws (part number 2 824 150) of strength class 10.9.

Use tightening torque 270 Nm.

Cutting the end plate

Cutting the end plateEnd plates that protrude below the underrun protection may be cut. Cutting must be done in accordance with the following guidelines:

• Only a cold cutting method, such as sawing, is permitted

• Cutting with a cutting torch is prohibited

• Cutting with an angle grinder is permitted, but not recommended. When using an angle grinder, coolant must be used or breaks should be taken at regular intervals to allow the end plate to cool down.

• Cutting must be carried out so that the dashed line between the holes on the end plate is visible after cutting. The cut should be made parallel to the dotted line.

• After cutting, the cut edge must be ground smooth, cleaned and treated with Au-tocoat BT WB 450 Topcoat IF Sub Grey 48440(part number 1 346 692) or an equivalent product to cover the cut surface

• Apply the anti-corrosive agent so that it overlaps with the existing paintwork

The cutting position depends on the position and profile type of underrun protection. When the requirements have been satisfied, refer to the table to determine the cutting position.

The table indicates the cutting position that may be used for the relevant profile type and for the hole position in which the relevant underrun protection is fitted.

For example: A square profile underrun beam is used and is located in hole position S2. The end plate may be cut according to cutting line C3.
