CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1. Background

The study of modern languages is a tool used to

communicate between cultures. Humans use language to structure

their beliefs, ideas, opinions, and cultural experiences. To

understand another language is to gain insight into another

culture, another way of perceiving the world. It is also to

understand one's own language better and to gain a critical

reflection on one’s own culture, through the lens of another.

Students who learn another language can appreciate the

creativity of music, poetry, drama, and narrative.

In addition, modern technology must improve the language

to communicate each others. The study of language is a crucial

part of critical thinking as the students improve their

communication. So, it needs some facilities to improve their

language in many skills. With the high technology, it can make

people always rely on the information. Not only information

3

that we get from phone or email, but also the others

technology those are increasingly required.

The language laboratory has an important role in language

teaching. In language laboratory, students can listen to

different speakers recorded in high quality tapes, they can

participate and practice as much as possible while repeating

sentences aloud. In addition, the use of the language lab

allows students to access information quickly and easily, it

also enable teacher to develop many types of classroom

exercises, personalizing the learning process, encouraging

creativity, innovation and training.

As we know that this school has insufficient language

laboratory. Therefore I am as an English teacher would like to

propose a proposal to establish the new model of language

laboratory which will help students learning English better.

1.2. Objectives

The objectives of the implementation of this language

laboratory are:

1. Involving the students to actively participate in

language learning exercises.

2. Getting more practice about language skills especially

listening and speaking.

3. Make the students easier to learn foreign language.

4. Introducing students to the importance of technological

development.

PRODUCT DETAIL

2.1. Company DescriptionPT. Arion Indonesia a company engaged in the field of

Information Technology. Arion Indonesia aims to improve the

efficiency and effectiveness of the performance of education

by becoming a dependable partner and provide solutions field

of Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

Arion provides a wide range of superior products ranging

from hardware to software development, including LANGUAGE

LABORATORY modern and sophisticated.

PT. ARION INDONESIA is also a language laboratory

experienced producers, has a high dedication in the field of

educational technology, eager to participate by providing

solutions for educational institutions to design and build

and provide good language laboratory language laboratory

manual / analog, digital language lab and language lab base

software that is more representative.

2.2. Language Laboratory Type

Double Console Language Laboratory is a type of language

laboratory which is mixed between Digital Language

Laboratory and Computerized Language Laboratory. Teacher /

master may use digital or computer facilities. In general,

6

the use of this type of language laboratory is to anticipate

problems at any time damage that occurs in the language

laboratory. So when there is damage, the teaching-learning

process does not immediately stop because one type of

language laboratory (digital language laboratory or

computerized language lab) can be used.

There are several types of double console language

laboratory, namely:

Double Console Language Laboratory type AA

Double Console AAC Language Laboratory.

Double Console AAC Language Laboratory FLEX

Double Console AAC Language Laboratory FLEX-PLUS

But here, the developer used Double Console AAC Language

Laboratory FLEX. Here, the weaknesses and strengths of

double console language laboratory:

The Strenghts of having

double console language

lab

The weaknesses of having

double console language

lab1. The function of the

laboratory is more complex

than the manual

laboratory.

2. Can use a computer or

digital at any time.

1. The price is more

expensive than in the

laboratory manual because

it consists of two types

of language lab

2. It needs teachers and7

3. If the computer is error

or damaged, the language

laboratory is still

functional.

4. Supported by many more

sophisticated facilities.

5. Facilitate teacher or

technician who is familiar

with the use of the type

laboratory technicians

with higher skills than

the laboratory manual (at

least understand the

operation of the computer)

2.4. Software Descriptions DigiStudio

DigiStudio is a full-featured digital language laboratory

system that enlivens bothteaching and learning. Powerful

DigiStudio software brings many effective functions to any

LAN-connected classroom. Here are the main features of

DigiStudio:

Language Lab Functions

DigiStudio provides broadcasting, listening, speaking,

and recording functions for teacher and students, along with

14

powerful classroom management functions: rollcall, attendance,

and test scoring.

Advanced instructional functions

Advanced 8-channel, LAN-based broadcast includes six

simultaneous channels of digital A-V (such as a streaming

audio, movies, WAV, MP3, MPG, DAT files, etc.), plus two

analog audio channels. The teacher controls student reception,

or allows students to select from multiple instructional

streams.

Multiple types of instructional data

DigiStudio allows use of standard multimedia formats such

as WAV, MP3, MPG, and WMA; and audio-text files that let

students hear audio and optionally see concurrent text and

graphics, for increased learning efficiency. Adding a cassette

unit to the teacher's PC makes it easy to use cassette tapes,

too.

Multiple Modes

In Study Hall Mode, students may peruse streaming

multimedia or access any instructional files from the network

where permission is granted. Instruction Mode is similar,

except that students may work only on what the teacher

assigns. In Group Talk Mode, students practice target patterns

in small groups. In Handout Mode, when the teacher opens a

document (e.g.: Word, PDF, Excel, PowerPoint, or whatever),

student stations all open the same document at the same page.

The four Quiz and Exam modes cover a multitude of testing

possibilities: listening comprehension, speaking, reading

comprehension, essay segments, etc. DigiStudiorecords all

15

student responses during testing, and provides instant scoring

for multiple choice segments. For oral tests, teachers score

students' recorded answers in a convenient grid.

DigiStudio provides tools for authoring and editing a variety

of test files. If desired, you can simulate official language

examinations such as TOEFL, TOEIC, GMAT, IELTS, and GEPT for

maximally effective practice and evaluation.

File Transfer and Remote Application Execution

Convenient file transfer and remote activation means the

teacher can manage student stations easily, right from the

teacher station.

Browser Control

The teacher can assign a certain URL, then open all student

browsers to that assigned web site. Similarly, the teacher can

close all student browsers at the click of a button.

CHAPTER 3

SETTING AND LAYOUT

3.1. Setting

Actually, Language Lab in MTsN Srono is capable to build

with 40 Channels that requires room ± 7 x 8 m. But here, the

developer would like to build only 32 channels because of the

effectuality of teaching and learning process. Besides that,

the rest will be for additional equipment that supports the

16

language laboratory to be more complete with many more

beneficial facilities.

3.2. LayoutLayout that is going to use in this language laboratory

is U shape. There are some reasons why the developer chose

this kind of layout, such as:

1. Teacher can easily control the students by seeing the

console.

2. There is no partition to make students easier to work

together when teacher asks them to work in group.

3. Students have a very easy access to in or out from their

seats because there are a lot of spaces among their desks.

Here is the shape of language laboratory :

CHAPTER 4

CONCLUSION

21

The importance of language laboratory is for increasing

the quality of teaching and learning program in the school.

By using this advantage, the teaching and learning process

will be more interesting for students. Through the utilization

of the learning process can be more attractive to students so

that growing interest in learning that can improve the quality

of student learning. Those are what I have arranged to make

some realization of our new language laboratory. I wish that

this proposal could be considered properly by the school

headmaster.

By this language laboratory, I wish the students in MTs

N Srono Involve to actively participate in language learning

exercises, getting more practice about language skills and

make them easier to learn foreign language.
