UPGRADED OPTIMAGETS EVEN BETTERThe Kia Optima receives newengines, design changes andupdated tech for Q3.

The changes include two newengine options. The first is Kia’sall-new ‘U3’ 1.6-litre CRDi dieselengine. It provides 136ps and320Nm of torque. It’s alsodesigned to go beyond thestricter limits set by the Euro6d TEMP emissions standard.

A new Drive Mode Selectorlets Optima drivers switchbetween Eco, Comfort, Sportand Smart modes.

Optima ‘GT’ and ‘GT Line’models feature new LED foglamps, 18-inch aluminium alloywheel designs, and subtle glossblack mirror caps, side sills andair intake grille. ‘GT Line’ modelsreceive new dual twin exhausts.

Seats are available intwo-tone black and red leatheras well as black leather withcontrasting red stitching.

There’s new safety kit too.Driver Attention Warning isavailable, as is ForwardCollision-avoidance Assist (FCA)with pedestrian recognition.

To aid parking, the Optimacomes with a new higher-resolution Around View Monitor(AVM) camera system.The upgraded Optima saloonand Sportswagon go on-sale inQ3 2018.

A new agreement means Kia Motors has becomean Official Partner of the UEFA Europa League.

The three-year sponsorship deal begins in the2018/19 season, and runs through to the UEFAEuropa League final in 2021.

The UEFA Europa League is one of the world’slargest professional club football competitions,involving 48 top clubs from across Europe, andattracting a global cumulative TV audience of onebillion across all programming.

As Official Partner, Kia Motors will supply a fleetof 90 vehicles for the UEFA Europa League finals in2019, 2020 and 2021. The fleet will be used totransport referees, officials, delegates and VIPs.

Kia will invite thousands of fans to UEFA EuropaLeague games. 205 young football fans acrossEurope will be given the opportunity – by entering acompetition – to be the Official Match Ball Carrierand share the excitement of the UEFA EuropaLeague throughout the season.

“We are excited to become an Official Partnerof the UEFA Europa League for the next threeseasons, continuing our long-established link withthe most popular sport, not just in Europe but

Stinger comes with touchscreennavigation as standard, which offers fullEuropean mapping and a Traffic MessagingChannel. Also available is Kia ConnectedServices with TomTom!, which supplies youwith handy information, such as trafficconditions, speed camera locations and theweather at your destination. You can alsosearch for points of interest, such as thelocation of Kia dealerships or nearbyrestaurants. For keeping your devices juicedup, there are front and rear USB ports, while‘GT-Line S’ and ’GT S’ have a wireless phonecharger – it even warns you if you leave thecar without your phone.

RELENTLESS POWERStinger ticks the comfort and luxury boxesthen, but a good Gran Turismo needs power,too and Stinger delivers that in spades.

The range-topping ‘GT S’ is powered by amighty 3.3-litre twin-turbo V6 T-GDi. Thismakes the Stinger ‘GT S’ the fastest-accelerating Kia ever, with 0-60mphdismissed in a brisk 4.7 seconds. And, it’llpower on to a top speed of 168mph. Whichmakes the incredible refinement of Stingerall the more impressive. Those eyebrow-raising numbers come courtesy of 365bhp at6,000rpm and a huge 510Nm of torquestarting at 1,300rpm and continuinguninterrupted until 4,500rpm. But it’s notjust the acceleration that’s impressive, it’sthe way that Stinger surges forward in apurposeful, but incredibly smooth manner,so you always feel in control.

That smoothness is partly thanks to theelectronic eight-speed automatic gearboxthat comes with every Stinger. It wasdesigned by Kia engineers to provideimmediate shifts and optimum fuelefficiency. It’s also Kia’s first use of aCentrifugal Pendulum Absorber (CPA) torqueconverter, which reduces unwanted torsionalvibrations through the drivetrain and helpscontribute to Stinger’s refined ride.

The other petrol option is the 2.0-litreT-GDI, which develops 244bhp at 6,200rpmand 353Nm of torque all the way from 1,400to 3,500rpm, which gives you effortlessacceleration throughout the rev range. Thesmaller engine means a combined fueleconomy of 35.8mpg, allowing it to covermore than 450 miles between fill ups, yet itcan still hit 60mph in 5.8 seconds.

There’s also a diesel option in the form ofa 2.2-litre CRDi. This boasts the best fueleconomy of the bunch with a combinedconsumption of 48.7mpg, giving it a touringrange that comfortably exceeds 600 miles– that’s London to Paris and back withoutstopping for fuel! It delivers 197bhp at3,800rpm and 440Nm of torque, also acrossa wide range – 1,750 to 2,750rpm.

The clever new transmission allows you tochoose from five different driving modesthat alter shift and throttle response. Youcan leave the car to do its own thing andshift for itself, or change gears with steeringwheel-mounted paddles. A limited slipdifferential is fitted to every Stinger so thattorque is always transferred to the rearwheel with most grip.

Given Stinger’s incredible refinement andsound dampening, Kia engineers wanted tomake sure occupants could still enjoy therefined sporting tones of the Stinger’sturbocharged engines. To do that they’veadded an Active Sound System, which relaysthe engine note to the cabin through thecar’s audio system rather than the moreconventional actuator. It can be customisedthrough the Drive Mode Selector – so you’llnotice the effect when in ‘Sport’, but less soin ‘Comfort’ for example.

UNDER CONTROLHaving that power and torque at your

disposal makes for an effortless drive, butKia engineers have gone to great lengths tomake sure it has the handling to match.

Stinger prototypes have covered theequivalent of 27 trips around the Equator,while also taking part in extreme climatetesting in Europe, Asia, the Middle East andNorth and South America. To get thehandling spot-on, development cars havedone at least 10,000 kilometres of thetortuous NVrburgring Nordschleife – thedefinitive testing ground for car handling.The testing regime was headed by Kia’sHead of Vehicle Test and High PerformanceDevelopment, Albert Biermann – the formerboss of BMW’s M Division.

Gliding through the scenic roads of theNew Forest, it becomes apparent that thebeautiful region shares a lot in common withthe All-New Kia Stinger.

This is one of the most picturesqueregions in Britain with a peace andtranquility that’s rarely experienced today.Like the Stinger, it’s beautiful to look at. It’squiet, too. Here, with the Stinger in ‘Comfort’mode, you could hear a pin drop in its lavishcabin. It’s the perfect place to experienceStinger’s exceptional luxury and refinement.

Drive on, and you’ll inevitably come acrossNew Forest’s twisting, undulating roads – anever-present temptation to indulge in somedriving fun, switch to Sport mode, unleashthe 3.3-litre twin turbo V6 of the Stinger‘GT S’ and test those big Brembo brakes.

Take a look at the quad exhaust pipes andyou could be forgiven for thinking that this isa hard-edged sports car – but the reality willlikely surprise you.

A LUXURIOUS PLACE TO BEStinger is first and foremost a refined,luxurious GT cruiser. Its interior wasdesigned to cocoon its driver andpassengers, while offering space for fivepeople and their luggage. The low-slungleather seats ooze comfort – opt for the ‘GTS’ and you’ll be treated to Nappa leather.

The snug seats hold you in place, and the

two in front can be adjusted to perfectionthanks to eight-way power adjustment. Thedriver’s seat remembers two differentsettings, too, so you won’t have to spendforever getting comfy each trip. There’seven four-way power lumbar adjustment.The focus on comfort is abundantly evident.

The front seats and steering wheel areheated in ‘GT-Line S’. Step up to ’GT S’ andthey are also ventilated – no one wants tobe hot and sticky in the summer – while theouter rear seats are also heated.

The wing-shaped dashboard is alsocovered in leather, as are the door armrests,the D-shaped steering wheel and thegearshifter, which has chrome sections.

To further emphasise the premium feel,there’s an aluminium-finish centre console,a chrome strip running all the way aroundthe cabin, suede-feel headlining, satinchrome interior door handles, alloy pedals,stainless steel door scuff plates and fiveaeronautically inspired spoked circular airvents. It’s a very nice place to be.

FEATURE RICHThen there’s the incredibly generousequipment list. Dual automatic airconditioning is fitted to every model, there’salso a 7.0" LCD supervision cluster for thedriver with a customisable head-up display.You can choose speed, navigation

instructions, cruise control and blind spotdetection information to be projected ontothe windscreen, so you don’t have to takeyour eyes off the road. ‘GT-Line S’ and ’GTS’ also have a 360-degree around-viewmonitor, so you can see the Stinger’ssurroundings without having to do your bestowl impression. The Stinger really does tryto make driving effortless.

Every model has a DAB radio with MP3compatibility and Bluetooth! with musicstreaming. And, to properly manage yourphone on the go, Apple CarPlay™ andAndroid Auto™ offer voice control – so youcan play your favourite playlist from Spotify,Google Play Music or iTunes withoutpressing endless buttons.

Your music will sound incredible onStinger’s impressive sound systems, too.The ‘GT-Line’ has a nine-speaker systemthat has a subwoofer under the front seat,while ‘GT-Line S’ and ‘GT S’ have a concert-hall-quality 15-speaker harman/kardon!premium system with subwoofer, externalamp and front centre speaker. It featuresClari-Fi, which restores the sound often lostwhen digital music files are heavilycompressed, and QuantumLogic SurroundSound, which redistributes signals from theoriginal recording to deliver multi-dimensional playback. Put simply, yourmusic will sound exceptional.

that right-hand-drive cars underwentadditional testing in the UK to meet theunique challenges of its roads.Every Stinger has fully independentsuspension through MacPherson struts atthe front and a five-link setup featuringdouble wishbones at the rear. However,‘GT-Line’ and ‘GT-Line S’ have a passivesetup, while ’GT S’ introduces adaptiveDynamic Stability Damping Control (DSDC),which can be changed through the DriveMode Selector. This allows the driver tochoose a more comfort-oriented settingwhen cruising or a sport setting whichintroduces more powerful damping force.DSDC is also capable of changing the strokelength of the shock absorbers according toacceleration, braking and steering.

Also standard on the ‘GT S’ is a variable-ratio version of Kia’s rack-mounted MotorDriven Power Steering, and this can also beadjusted via the Drive Mode Selector. Thecomfort-based settings require less turningeffort from on-centre, becomingprogressively firmer as more lock is added.Sport requires more initial effort, butshorter gearing gives you a more immediateresponse to your steering inputs.

To make sure it has the stopping power tomatch its strong engine lineup, Stinger’sbrakes have had more development workthan those on any previous Kia. There areventilated discs at all four corners for the2.0-litre T-GDi and 3.3-litre T-GDi V6models, with ventilated front discs and solidrear discs for the 2.2-litre CRDi models.

The mighty brakes for the 3.3-litre ’GT S’were co-developed with Brembo and are350mm front and 340mm rear discs, holedand grooved, to provide high heat capacitywith low fade, even in repeated heavy use.They were developed on some of thehighest mountain passes in Austria,Germany and Spain as well as around theNVrburgring. There are quad-piston frontcalipers and dual-piston rear calipers formaximum pedal feel.

To handle all that acceleration andstopping power, there are 18" alloy wheelswith 225/45 R18 tyres for ‘GT-Line’ and‘GT-Line S’, while the ’GT S’ has 19" alloyswith 225/40 R19 tyres at the front and evenwider 255/35 R19 tyres at the rear.

GRAN TURISMO PROPORTIONSThis is the most adventurous car in Kia’shistory, and it has the looks to match.Stinger’s design exhibits classic gran turismoproportions – long bonnet, short frontoverhang, long wheelbase, cabin positionedtowards the rear of the car, lengthy rearoverhang beneath broad shoulders and a‘Coke-bottle’ nip in the waist.

The sleek front end has a newinterpretation of Kia’s ‘tiger-nose’ grille. Theflanks are simple and fuss-free. The largelower grille and air intake give away theStinger’s sporty credentials, as do the darkchrome highlights and bold rear diffuserwith quad tailpipes on petrol models andtwin tailpipes on diesels.

Many of Stinger’s design details werecreated to aid aerodynamics and high-speedstability. The shape of Stinger makes airflowaround the car as clean as possible. As aresult, the bodywork has been taperedslightly towards the rear and there is apartially flat underfloor tray, while the rearspoiler has taken on a slight ducktail shapeto reduce lift.

The Stinger is a sign of Kia’s bold andexciting future and further evidence that Kiacan compete with the world’s best fordesirability, design and technology. In fact,Stinger was the outright winner ofWhatCar?’s Best Executive car for 2018,beating significantly pricier opposition.

WhatCar? described the Stinger ‘GT S’ as apotent, yet very relaxing, continental cruiser.And that’s the point isn’t it?

“The Stinger has nothing to do with beingthe first to arrive,” says European Head ofDesign Gregory Guillaume. “This car is allabout the journey. It’s about passion.” n

ADVANCED DRIVING AIDS

If state-of-the-art brakes andsuspension wasn’t enough, Stingercomes with plenty of advanced driveraids to keep your driving experiencetrouble-free.

All versions have AutonomousEmergency Braking, whichautomatically stops the car if thedriver fails to respond to a potentialaccident. Lane Keep Assist will preventyou from accidentally straying intoanother lane. High Beam Assist willadjust your headlights according toother traffic and local lighting, andDriver Attention Warning alerts a tireddriver that it is time to take a break.Also available is a Speed LimitInformation system.

‘GT-Line S’ and ’GT S’ also add BlindSpot Detection with Rear Cross TrafficAlert: together, these warn you ofvehicles approaching out of youreye-line when changing lanes orexiting parallel parking spaces. AnActive Bonnet is standard with everyStinger to provide additional protectionfor pedestrians’ heads in a collision.

When conditions aren’t ideal – or ifyou’re forced to evade a hazard –Stinger has Electronic Stability Controllinked to Vehicle Stability Management(VSM) to correct potential skidswithout any intervention from thedriver. VSM uses a clever new dynamictorque vectoring system, whichmonitors your inputs and the roadconditions and automatically appliespower and braking force to the innerrear wheel to minimise understeer andenhance steering feel.

Kia’s engineers wanted to make the All-NewCeed the most innovative car in its class. Andwhen you look at the incredible technology onoffer, you’d have to say it’s a job well done.

It’s no secret that the Ceed is an important carfor Kia, so it comes as little surprise that the newmodel is one of their most ambitious yet.

“The Kia Ceed has been a lynchpin in thebrand’s consistent growth across Europe formore than a decade,” says Michael Cole, currentChief Operating Officer for Kia Motors Europe.

“Building on these solid foundations, theall-new Ceed offers a truly contemporary andrecognisable design, and advanced technologiesto enhance comfort, convenience and safety. And innovative it is. The car has been bestowedwith so much technological trickery that it setsan exciting new milestone for Kia. This is the firstKia sold in Europe to be offered with LaneFollowing Assist, which is a ‘Level Two’autonomous driving technology.

Here’s why that’s such a big deal. When you’rein traffic, Lane Following Assist tracks vehicles infront of the Ceed, and detects road markings tokeep the car in its lane on the motorway. Continuing the Europeantheme, the Kia Ceed hasbeen designed at thebrand’s European designcentre in Frankfurt,Germany. And it borrowssome of the sporty,emotional design characterof the Kia Stinger to givethe Ceed a more self-confident new look.

The new car is lower,wider, and with a longerrear overhang than the carit replaces, and the Ceed’scab-rearward silhouetteexhibits a more maturesense of athleticism. Thefront of the car features awider ‘tiger-nose’ grille andlower air intake, andprecise, linear shapesframing its ‘face’. Therounded-off edges of itspredecessor are gone,replaced instead withpurposeful straight lines.

The new model features‘ice cube’ LED daytimerunning lights as standard.

In profile, the sharp,straight lines visuallylengthen the bonnet andgive the car a more uprightstance. A greater sense ofmaturity and strength iscreated in its shoulder line,which now runs along amore horizontal plane. Thenew model adopts the wideC-pillar that has become ahallmark of Kia design inrecent years, enhancing itscab-rearward stance. Thisalso gives the upperwindow-line a sleek new‘half-moon’ shape. Every Ceed comes with a six-speed manualtransmission, while 1.4-litre T-GDi and 1.6-litreCRDi engines can be paired with Kia’s seven-speed double-clutch transmission for a smoothand refined automatic option.

CHOOSE YOUR MOODEverybody has a different driving style, so whyshould every car drive the same? The All-NewCeed’s Drive Mode Select system means you cantailor your driving experience to suit your mood.

Choosing normal mode will offer greater fuelefficiency and provide more relaxed steering.Switch into Sport mode and you’ll be treated withenhanced throttle responses, faster acceleration,and adjustments to the steering that giveadditional weight and more decisive responses toyour inputs.

INTERIOR SPACEThe All-New Kia Ceed is the most ergonomic yet,and uses higher-quality materials throughout,which makes the cabin a classy and comfortableplace to be. A redesigned dash means that thereis greater space for the front passenger, and alsoprovides more space in the footwell to give themplenty of legroom.

The new dash is split into an upper area – forthe ‘floating’ touchscreen infotainment system– and lower area, housing controls for audio andheating and ventilation. The centre console isangled slightly towards the driver’s seat soeverything is within easy reach. The interiormakes good use of sophisticated soft-touchmaterials throughout, which further enhancesthe cabin’s upmarket feel. Surfaces are finished

with metallic or satin chrome trim, and cloth,synthetic leather or genuine leather upholstery.A leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear stickare also available.

A BIGGER PLATFORMThe All-New Ceed has been constructed on Kia’snew ‘K2’ platform, which means it’s 20mm wider(1,800mm) and 23mm lower (1,447mm) than theoutgoing model. Its wheelbase remains the sameat 2,650mm.

The new platform offers the most spaciousCeed cabin yet. The wider body creates greatershoulder room for rear passengers (increased by34mm to 1,406mm), while a 15mm-lower seatingposition in the rear creates more knee and legroom for passengers in the back. And the rooflinemay be lower, but the platform and front seatingposition create greater front-row headroom thanbefore (987mm).

This clever, efficient packaging means thatalthough the Ceed is a similar size to itspredecessor, it also boasts a larger 395-litre boot– that’s 15-litres more than before. The boot lip isalso substantially lower than before – making itmuch easier to load heavier items. A split-levelboot floor allows owners to lower or raise theheight of the boot floor, to accommodate largeror awkwardly shaped cargo, or create a hiddencompartment beneath.

If boot space is a priority, there is also a newCeed Sportswagon, which boasts the sameimpressive innovations as the five-doorhatchback, but comes with a cavernous 625-litrecargo capacity. n

So the All-New Ceed has beenengineered exclusively for European roads, withEuropean buyers in mind. In fact the name Ceedwas chosen because it’s a car for the Communityof Europe, with European Design. As such, theride and handling characteristics have been tunedto greatly improve dynamism and driverengagement. In other words, Kia’s engineers havemade certain that it’s fun to drive.

There’s a new fully-independent suspensionsystem that provides more agile and immediatehandling responses. Pair this with revised springand damper rates and a faster steering rack, andyou get a much more exciting drive. The ride hasbeen developed on Europe’s wide variety of roadsurfaces to make sure it’s comfortable, too.

Under the bonnet there is a selection ofpowertrains including a new 1.4-litre T-GDi unit.This new turbocharged engine produces 140ps- four per cent more than the previous 1.6-litredespite its lower displacement. The turbochargeralso gives you a wider torque band than theearlier 1.6-litre engine, making it more responsiveand flexible, while also reducing emissions.

Other petrol options include an updated 120ps1.0-litre T-GDi engine, which, like the 1.4 T-GDi isfitted with a gasoline particulate filter thatfurther reduces tailpipe emissions, ensuring thenew Ceed goes beyond the requirements of theEuro 6d TEMP standard.

The diesel line-up gets an exciting newcomerin the form of Kia’s all-new ‘U3’ engine. Thisefficient 1.6-litre CRDi uses Selective CatalyticReduction (SCR) - an active emissions controltechnology - to significantly reduce emissions.That means the new ‘U3’ engine produces lesscarbon dioxide, particulate matter and NOxcompared to earlier Kia diesel engines. Like theT-GDi engines, this helps it to meet the latestEuro 6d TEMP emissions standard. It’s also betterfor the environment and your wallet.

The engine produces 115ps and creates animpressive 280Nm of torque to provide effortlessin-gear acceleration. With this new engine, theCeed’s CO2 emissions are expected to fall below110 g/km on the new Worldwide Harmonised LightVehicle Test Procedure (WLTP), when convertedto the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC).

HybridHybrid electric vehicle or HEVThis uses a ‘regular’ engine and pairsit with an electric motor and a smallbattery. The engine and motor worktogether to drive the vehicle – the electricmotor will move the vehicle at low speedand during gentle acceleration, then theengine will kick in when more power isneeded or the battery is depleted. Thebattery is charged when vehicle slowsdown – this energy would be wasted ona non-hybrid vehicle. There is no need toplug in. The small battery means an all-electric range of around 1.5 miles.
