Topredictmeanstoforetellorforecastthefuture.Thefutureisalwaysuncertainandtheuncertaintyabout itmakes iteversoexcitingandattractive.Thereisnoonewhodoesnotwanttoknowaboutthefuture,andthereisnoonewhodoesnotseektoknowwhatthefutureholdsinstore.TowardsthispurposefulendthosewhopracticethescienceofAstrologyaremostoftenapproached,and from them astrological predictions about future events areeagerly gained. The experienced practitioner of Astrology knowsandunderstandsthelanguageofthestarsandtheroamingplanets,and he also understands what those who consult him desire toknow.Hetakesontheroleofatrustedfriendandfaithfulguide,and in someextremecasesassumes the roleofapsychiatrist totakethepressureoffthemindsofthosewhoapproachhim.Heactsas a witness, speaks soothingly and exercising needful patiencelendshisearsandsupport.But,predictingfutureeventsforeventhemostexperiencedastrologerisnotaneasytask. Accurate astrological predictions cannot be made withoutmasteringtheartofprediction.Tomastertheartofpredictionittakesmanyyearsofdedicatedin-depthstudyofthevariousavailabletextsunderthewatchfuleyesandsupervisionofanableguru,andthereafter,byputtingthatlearningintoactualpracticeallthewhilegainingmoreandmoreexperienceandhoningoftheacquiredskills.Allpredictionsaregenerallybasedonstatisticalinference,bysiftingthedata inhandandsubjecting it toquantitativeandqualitativeanalysis using relevant scientific methods that have as theirbasis logical consequences of scientific theories and establishedprinciples. For a devoted astrologer each act of prediction is a

learningexperience,healwayscreditssuccessfulpredictionstotheancientseersandhisguru,andwheneverhefailshetakesituponhimselfthetaskoffindingoutwherehehaserredandwhatmorehehastolearninthatparticularcontext. Anastrologerpredictsfutureeventswiththehelpofthemovingplanets,andthefixedstarsservingastheirback-ground.Astrologyenables him to discover their varying effects and influences onhumanandmundaneaffairs.Asincereastrologerdoesnotallowhisjudgementtobeinfluencedbyoutwardappearances;heweighsandre-weighstheevidenceaffordedbyplanetaryconfigurations;hecarefullymaintainsthedelicatebalanceinhiscriticalassessmentofthatevidence,andhedoesnotignoreorsetasideanyabnormality.Themovingplanetsandthefixedstarsdonotbythemselvescausetheeventsthatareassociatedwiththemtooccur.Alleventsthatunfold expectedly or suddenly for us to experience are actuallybeyond causation and destined to occur. Verily the planets andthestarsdottingtheskyindicatethedestiniesofallhumanbeingswhichdestinieswithoutanyexceptionareguidedbythereasonofanindividual’spresentactionsandreactionsinthecontextofoneormorepreviousexperiences.Theseactionsandreactions,whichare not independent but dependent on the physical self, bind apersontothisworldandshapeindividualandcollectivedestines.Destinyisconnectedwiththeouterphysicalbodythattheresultsof thepreviouskarmasbind,andwhichresultscannotaffect theinnerself.Astrologyunfoldstheresultsofthepreviouskarmasofmanwhom it fore-warns tobe fore-armed.Existence isamatterof science and direct perception, and as Adi Sankara had onceremarkedknowledge isobtainedby investigationandnotby themereacceptanceofassertionsbyothers.Asascienceoftendenciesastrology indicateswhat is likely tohappen, it reveals the futurebutitisnotmeanttopromotefatalisticattitudeofresignationtoapre-determineddestiny, it ismeanttofreetheconfinedspacesofthemindstifledbyignorance,delusionandgreed.Fearisakindofdelusion,andastrology ismeant tomakeone fearlessandbepreparedfortheworst. PredictionsasperHinduAstrology,which is indigenous in itsorigin,arebasedonvariousprinciplesthathadlongagodawnedupon our ancient seers as a result of supernatural divinations.Astrology or Jyotisa is a divine science; it has a set format and

follows a well-defined methodology but it is not an empiricalsciencebecause itdealswith thepart-less formlessnon-materialentitiessuchasTimeandSpaceinthecontextofCauseandEffect;its prescribed rules cannot be violated. For effecting accuratepredictionstheancientseersdeemedasessentialtheknowledgeoftheexactdeterminationoftheascendantorlagnaatthetimeofbirthorquery,theknowledgeoftheexactpositioningofthenineplanets,theirrelativestrengthandinter-relationship,thenatureofquery and the judicial applicationof various rules andprinciplesof mathematics, astronomy and prognostication. Astrologicalpredictionsgowrongwhenthesefundamentalsareeitherignoredorarecasuallyapplied. In India, it isnotraretoseethePundits,theprofessionalpractitionersofAstrology,makingpredictionsonthebasisoftheRasi-chart(Horoscope)withreferenceonlytothecurrentplanetarydasaandplanetarytransits;theydonotappeartoconducteventherequiredminimumanalysisofthatrasi-chart.Predictionsmadeinthisfashionaremostlyunreliableandinvariablygowrong.Incorrectpredictionsaremadenotduetoanyabsenceofscientificbasis,butonlytothelackofpropercommandofthefacts.Allastrologershavetheirownpercentageoffailures.Manyastrologersareevenseentoapplyalongwith thereadingof thebirth-charts or query-charts entirely different vidyas such as thestudyofthethumbbasedonRavanaSamhita,thiskindofapproachshould be avoided. An astrologer should have a very thoroughknowledgeofinterpretationofhoroscopes.Hereditaryastrologersacquire skill due to generations of cumulative experience. Thereare no short-cuts available for an accurate divinisation of futureevents.Astrologyisnotconsidereddeterministicforitisthehumanmindthatfinallydecideseventhoughallformsofdesirethatthemindprojectsgiverisetopainandpleasurewhichareattherootoftheevolutionofthebrain.Nevertheless,revelationofwhatcausesspecificandsignificantimpactsonallthatexistsrequiresahumanagencyforitsownmanifestation,andtherefore,thathumanagencymustbeatrainedone. HinduAstrologyisbasedontheFixedZodiacandtheNirayanapositionsofplanets.TheNirayanapositionsofplanetsarearrivedatbyfirstlyascertainingtheirSayanapositionsandthensubtractingtheAyanamsafromsuchpositions.TheBhavaSphutas(LongitudeoftheHouses),theRasimanas(ObliqueAscensions)andallother

calculations are computed for Sayana Rasis or signs and thensubjected to Nirayana reduction. The Ayanamsa or Vishuva, thewordusedinVedangaJyotisa,isthedistancebetweentheHinduFirstpointoftheZodiacandtheVernalEquinox,measuredatanepoch,takingintoaccounttheveryslightrateofPrecessionoftheEquinoxes.TherelevantverseofVedangaJyotisaisalsointerpretedasdescribingthearithmeticalmethodtodeterminetheTithiandParva on the day of the Equinox without the observation of orcomputingthepositionoftheSunandtheMoon.Sincetheexactdatewhenthefixedandthemovablezodiaccoincidedatthefirstpointisnotexactlyknowntheprecessionaldistancevariesfromnineteendegreestotwenty-threedegrees.TheadeptsinHinduastrologybyusing different dates have introduced un-necessary complicationanddoubtswithregardtothetruevalueoftheAyanamsa.Therateofprecessionisonedegreeinabout72yearsoroneDwadasamsain179years,and isgenerally takenasfiftyandone-thirdsecondperannum.Therateofactualprecession is50.2438secondsperannumbutduetoerrorinthelengthofaSiderealYearintheHindutabulationsitis58.68secondsperannum.Itisgenerallypresumedthat theprecession isperpetualbut therearesomewhobelievethattheprecessionisnotperpetualbutoscillatesupto70degreeseithersideoftheFirstpointofAriesinacycleof7200years,andthattherateofprecessionisnotuniform.VedangaJyotisaofLagadhaisbelievedtohaveusedDhanishtaasthefiducialconstellation.Chitranakshatraisusedasthefiducialforthepresentage.TheAyanamsaaddedtotheVernal-pointequals30degrees.Someinsistthatthesixteen-degreewideZodiacisalientoHinduastrologybecausetheancienttextsusetheterm,Rasikootadhruvaorthemeetingpointofallrasis,asreferringtothepolesoftheeclipticwhichare180degrees apart which distance at any givenmoment covers rasisandnakshatrasandtheirparts.Thedimensionsofsignsisnotthesame at all latitudes, and the change in the values of positionalparametersofplanetsduetoachangeintheco-ordinatesdobringaboutachangeinthevargasofoccupancyofplanetsandashiftinthetimingofoperationofdasasandantra-dasas.TheYogatarasareconjunctionstarsandnotthejunctionstars. TheVedicpeoplewhowerefullyconversantwiththenakshatras(RigVeda8.8.5)werealsoconversantwiththetwelverasisorsigns(RigVeda1.164.11,1.164.48)andthefiveplanetsorTara-grahas,

Mercury,Venus,Mars,JupiterandSaturn(RigVeda1.105.10).Thedivisionofthezodiacintotwenty-sevennakshatrasisanexclusivefeatureofHinduastrology.ThemoreancientHindutextsrefertothenakshatra-wisepositionofplanetswitheachnakshatrasub-dividedintofourormoreparts.Theydonotrefertothesigns.Planetstendto give results of the lords of the nakshatras occupied by them.It is essential to findoutwhether a planet occupies a nakshatrawhichisbeneficandfriendlyandthatthenakshatra-lordisvestedwithrequiredstrength.Aplanet inthesamesignbut indifferentnakshatrabehavesdifferently.Planetsconjoininginthesamesignandsamenakshatraaremoreeffective.Thepointsofthehighestexaltationofplanetsarebasedonthe lordshipofthenakshatrascovering those very particular points as representing their anti-thesis. TheUdu-dasa system isprimarilybasedon thenakshatraoccupiedby theMoonat themomentofbirthorqueryand theeffectsofthedasasandantra-dasasofplanetsalsodependonthequalityofthenakshatrasruledandoccupiedbythedasa-lordsandnotonthesignsandthesub-divisionsofthesignsalone;thenatureandthequalityofthenakshatrasalteraccordingtothenakshatraoccupiedbytheMoon. Timehasbeenvieweddifferentlybydifferentschoolsofthought.Patanjali tells us that time is the fluctuation of consciousness.Theconsciousmindalone isawareoftime.Einstein tellsus thattime is relative to theobserver. Time isperceivedbecause thereareobjects in space and itsmeasurement is not the sameat allplacesintheuniverse.AstrologydealswiththephysicaltimethatisexpressedasSolar,Sidereal,StandardandLocaltime,whichphysicaltimeisprovidedbythespinningoftheearthandhasnoseparateexistencebecauseitisamodeofbeingofconcreteobjectswhichcannotbe reversed.Forallpracticalpurposes the localapparenttimeofrisingandsettingoftheSunistakentobealmostcorrect.The duration of the signs of the zodiac differs from latitude tolatitude;theHinduPanchanga(Ephemeris)usestheCharkhandas(accessionaldifferences)oftheparticularlatitudeforascertainingthatduration.ThehoroscopeiscastonthebasisoftheLocalMeanTime.Panchangafortheplaceofbirthisusuallynotavailable;thebirthtimeisrequiredtobeconvertedintolocaltimeoftheplaceforwhichtheconsultedPanchangahasbeenprepared.Mostoftenthepunditspreparehoroscopeswithouteffectingthisconversionand
