Dear booksellers, librarians, teachers and readers:
Welcome to the new and improved Orca super catalog, featuring everything we publish all in one place.
Orca Book Publishers has always aimed to create books that inspire and entertain. Originally publishing mostly fiction, with a particular emphasis on novels for struggling readers, Orca has been building a successful list of thoughtful nonfiction titles. In a time of information overload and increasing demands on children’s attention, it is now more important than ever to provide information and analysis that is accessible and understandable. Beyond that, our books encourage readers to form opinions that can help them navigate a complex world. We are committed to providing readers with the tools they need to meet their full potential while becoming active and engaged global citizens.
As we decide what to publish and why, we are constantly on the lookout for important books and are always asking: What’s the big idea?
There are LOTS of big ideas, and we hope you find a few of them in these pages.
Have a look through the catalog; we are sure you will find books that resonate with you and your colleagues. And if you have an idea for a book you don’t see, get in touch. We might be working on it already or maybe your interest will spur us on to the next idea. Help us make a better world. And thanks for reading—it matters.
Happy reading!

A baby comes from the mother’s womb, which is just below the stomach. It provides a safe place for the baby to grow. How does the baby start growing in the first place?
There are lots of different ideas about what happens after death. Many cultures believe that a person is made up of both a body and a soul, and that the soul lives on even though the body is no longer alive.
What happens to the person who has died?
Where does that person go?

Atoms to AtomsAs you know from Chapter One, when a person dies,
all the atoms used to build the molecules and cells
in the body will eventually be used again in other
living things. But in order to be recycled, the molecules and
cells fi rst have to be broken down. This happens through the
process of decomposition.
Although you can’t see much change in the body for the
fi rst couple of days (except in warmer temperatures, where
the process is faster), decomposition begins about four
minutes after death. The body cools gradually. Two or three
hours after death the face and neck become stiff, followed
by the rest of the body. This is called rigor mortis. It may last
for up to three days, and then the body suddenly relaxes and
softens again. Meanwhile, the bacteria and enzymes that did
other jobs while the body was alive have begun to break down
the body’s tissues.
Left on its own, a body will take months and even years
to decompose, and of course bones can last for millennia.
Throughout human history, every culture has had ways of dealing
with bodies before decomposition has progressed very far.
A stained-glass window shows a man on his deathbed—at home, surrounded by his family. Moments after he takes his last breath, his body will begin to decompose. JORISVO/

Mummification
When you think of mummies, you probably think of the
ancient Egyptians, Halloween or horror movies. Bodies buried
in the hot, dry sand of the desert were preserved naturally,
and the ancient Egyptians came to believe that preserving the
body was an important step toward a person living well in the
afterlife. They began to create elaborate tombs and perfected
methods of preserving bodies. They did this by removing the
organs and bodily fl uids, leaving the body covered in salt for
a period of time to dry it, rubbing perfumed oils on the dried
body and then using thick layers of plant resin to glue strips
of linen and a linen shroud around it.
But did you know that it wasn’t just the Egyptians who
made mummies? The ancient peoples of Chile and Peru, for
example, used mummifi cation as early as 6000 bce, at least
two thousand years before the Egyptians. Many other ancient
cultures made mummies too, including those in Spain, Nigeria,
Ethiopia, China and Tibet, as well as the Aztecs and Mayans.
Sometimes the dead are placed in some kind of tomb or
chamber instead of directly in the ground. There are many
kinds of tombs. Some are underground. They might be as
simple as a cave enclosed with rocks or as elaborate as a
catacomb, a large underground cemetery consisting of large
chambers and long passages lined with niches for the dead.
Burial vaults and crypts were usually built under churches
or churchyards. Other tombs, called mausoleums, are often
built aboveground. They were originally built for important
people, like the pyramids built for the pharaohs in Egypt,
but today they can be built for anyone. (Sometimes they are
underground as well.)
The Taj Mahal, in Agra, India, is perhaps the world’s best-known mausoleum. The Mughal emperor Shah Jahan had it built in the seventeenth century to house the tomb of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. DMITRY STRIZHAKOV/
SHUTTERSTOCK.COM
The ancient Egyptians mummified their pharaohs (below) and other wealthy people who could afford to pay to have their bodies preserved. But they also mummified all kinds of animals, like this cat (above). Some were pets who were buried with their owners. Others were intended as food offerings for humans in the afterlife, and still others were sacred offerings to the gods. ANDREA IZZOTTI/

The people of the Takuu Atoll are moving from their island home because sea-level rise has made it difficult to grow food. R ACHEL WANG
My husband, Gary, and I live beside Canoe Pass, a tidal flat between Thetis Island and Penelakut Island. We see seals, river otters, herons, kingfishers and many species of sea ducks and other water birds from our windows. But our house is only 1 meter (3.3 feet) above sea level, and we joke that we are going to have to put our house on a barge when the sea levels rise. From what scientists are saying about sea-level rise, our joke just might eventually come true.
My daughter Camas is keeping track of sea-level rise on our waterfront property.
ANN ERIKSSON
Coastal development, like these artificial islands built off the highly developed coast of Dubai, threaten marine ecosystems.DANIEL ALL ISON/DRE AMSTIME.COM
This warm freshwater doesn’t sink the way heavier cold, salty water does, likely slowing down the Great Ocean Conveyor you learned about in Chapter One. Because of the slowing currents, some areas of the planet are becoming hotter or colder, wetter or drier. The weather is becoming more extreme and harder to predict. Look out for more heat waves and cold snaps, heavier rain, longer droughts or wilder wind storms where you live.
In Hot Water
The ocean is an excellent heat sink, which means it can absorb large amounts of heat. About 80 percent of the extra heat we’ve created by releasing greenhouse gases has been absorbed by the ocean, helping to slow down global warming and climate change. And the warmer ocean temperatures make for more enjoyable summer swimming for us! But critically important ecosystems like coral reefs, and kelp and mangrove forests, normally rich with marine life, are struggling as ocean temperatures rise. Some species can’t survive in the warmer water and either move or die. Biodiversity goes down and the ecosystem becomes less resilient. Warming ocean temperatures can also cause outbreaks of marine viruses, bacteria and other pests.
Periscope Up
Water expands when it warms, so all that warmer ocean water is taking up more room. As a result, sea levels are rising. The large amounts of freshwater flowing into the ocean from melting glaciers and ice sheets are adding to the problem. For every degree Celsius the planet warms, scientists calculate that average sea levels will rise by about the height of a room (2.3 meters or 7.7 feet). “What?” you say. “You told us there’s already been one degree Celsius of warming, and the ocean hasn’t risen that much.”

Half or more of the world’s coral reefs are dying because of warming temperatures, ocean acidification and sea-level rise.R AINERVONBR ANDIS/ ISTOCK.COM

Like any bestseller, every Orca novel for reluctant readers begins its life as a creative spark in a talented writer. Our editors work closely with writers, mindful not only of meeting the technical requirements of the reluctant-reader audience, but also the need for a good story, well told. And readers recognize this. They may not realize what they are responding to, but we have seen time and time again that reluctant readers return to the shelf for Orca stories.

“Florence effortlessly creates a very real and loving biracial family for her
thoroughly modern protagonist . John’s fast-paced tale twines universal teen
concerns with specific cultural issues .”—Kirkus Reviews for He Who Dreams
“Reluctant or struggling readers, especially those who love realistic mysteries, will be drawn to this problem-solving story, a quick, high interest/low
reading level cloak-and-dagger adventure illustrating the injustice of dog fighting .”
—School LIbrary Connection for Caged
“Orca’s ‘Rapid Reads’ brings readers titles by best-selling authors, books that are intended for a diverse audience, including EAL students and reluctant readers . With contemporary settings,
strong characters and a plot-driven story, Jumped In is a superb example of the novella .”

them! They read them faster than expected, pick them up in their spare time and even take them home and finish
them in a night. They no longer groan when they are told to read! I appreciate the thought you have put into choosing authors, appropriate covers, current content and a variety of interests. It gives my students a sense
of accomplishment and allows them to gain confidence. Even my weakest readers are reading novels!"
—Laura Braithwaite Greater Essex County District School Board
Windsor, Ontario
“The books fly off the shelves! Not only do the covers appeal to the students, but the content is so appropriate to their age level!
Thank you, thank you, thank you both from a librarian and from the
students themselves.” —Carol Rachuk, Teacher Librarian, Strathroy, Ontario
“When students tell me they hate reading and all
the books are boring, I take them to my Orca shelf. Once they try one Orca
Soundings title, they want to read them all!”
—Tori Jensen, Library Media Specialist, St. Paul, Minnesota
“I manage an adult literacy program for a non-profit.
Many of our participants are at the lower middle school range.
We love the Rapid Reads books. They are perfect for reluctant
adult readers.” —Lisa Yeager, Kirkland, Washington

IT ALL BEGAN WITH THE ORCA SOUNDINGS.
Orca began publishing high interest-low reading level (hi-lo) books in 2002 with the first Orca Soundings books. These gritty, issues-driven books found their mark with teen readers who, for whatever reason, were struggling to read. The series has grown to more than 120 titles with riveting topics torn from headlines and relevant to high-schoolers. The demand for these kinds of quality stories led to the creation of Orca’s other hi-lo series for middle-schoolers, for sports fans, for performing-arts enthusiasts and for adults.
With more than 3 million copies sold, Orca’s hi-lo continues to turn nonreaders into readers across North America…and we’re not stopping! With new titles in each series out every season and customizable collections available in print, electronic format or on audio, we are your source for hi-lo fiction.

They really look forward to the Writing Lessons online, using their Ninja writing folders, and sharing successes. What a great opportunity!”
