Technique de communication par excellence des cultures médiévales, l’ars dictaminis est bien plus qu’un « art d’écrire des lettres » : une véritable idéologie rhétorique, aux in-nombrables débouchés encore trop méconnus.

L’ars dictaminis, ensemble de techniques de rédaction latines créées entre 1070 et 1250 pour

répondre aux nouveaux besoins de la société médié-vale, jouit depuis deux décennies d’un regain d’atten-tion notable. Dans une volonté de décentrer l’étude de l’ars dictaminis de l’approche strictement théorique pour affronter l’ensemble des problèmes que ce champ d’étude pose à l’histoire médiévale, le colloque a af-fronté collectivement l’ensemble des questions posées par l’ars dictandi, en tentant à la fois de faire le bilan des avancées effectuées ces dernières décennies, et de préciser les perspectives de recherche.

Anne-Marie Turcan-Verkerk est titulaire depuis 2008 de la chaire de ‘Langue et littérature latines du Moyen Âge à l’Ecole pratique des hautes études’, et cher-cheur associé à l’Institut de recherche et d’histoire des textes (CNRS).

Chargé de recherche au CNRS depuis 2007, Benoît Grévin est notamment spécialiste de la rhétorique politique du bas Moyen Âge, et en particulier de la diffusion de l’ars dictaminis dans les grandes chancel-leries européennes.

Examines one of the most important frontier regions of Europe in the thirteenth century by defining the relationship between Gaelic lords, Anglo-Norman lords, and the medieval environ-mental landscape of the King’s Cantreds, a space that was both the homeland of O’Conor royal authority from the eighth century and a defined holding of the English kings in the early thirteen-th century.

This work offers a new and innovative insight into the history of thirteenth-century Ireland by explor-ing the interplay between Gaelic lords, Anglo-Nor-man lords, and the medieval environmental landscape that connected them. Focusing on the king’s cantreds of Roscommon, a space that was both the homeland of the O’Conor royal authority from the eighth century and a defined holding of the English kings from the early thirteenth cen-tury, the book explores the frontier landscape as an active player in its own right within Irish his-tory and discusses the way that both Gaels and Anglo-Normans interacted with, and were in turn influenced by, this environment. This unique ap-proach to Irish history enables the author to step away from the traditional view of a dyadic rela-tionship between Gaelic and Anglo-Norman lords and instead demonstrate that not only did both sides alter and change the environment around them according to their perceptions of their en-emies and the threat posed by the land, but that the landscape itself was to play a significant role in shaping and influencing the identities and destiny of its inhabitants.

La solitude en milieu urbain est un champ de recherche contemporain, porté en par-ticulier par la sociologie. Les sociétés urbaines médiévales comptaient aussi leur lot de solitaires : enfants orphelins et abandonnés, immigrants à la recherche d’une vie meilleure, veufs et veuves, personnes âgées isolées. Le contexte de la deuxième moitié du XIVe siècle,

avec ses épidémies de peste récurrentes et les ravages causés par la guerre de Cent Ans aggrave le phéno-mène. Étudiée dans le cadre de la ville de Montpellier, des années 1250 à la fin du XVe siècle, à partir d’archives consulaires, fiscales et testamentaires, la solitude se révèle comme un phénomène fréquent : nombreuses sont les personnes seules dans l’espace urbain.

Lucie Laumonier mène des recherches de postdoctorat à l’Université du Minnesota à Minneapolis, grâce à une bourse du Fonds de Recherche du Québec - Société et culture (FRQSC). Ses travaux portent sur l’histoire de la famille, l’histoire sociale et l’histoire urbaine à la fin du Moyen Âge.

The essays in this volume re-examine two major me-dieval turning points in the relationship between rich and poor: the revolution in charity of the twelfth and thir-teenth centuries, and the era of late medieval crises when the vulnerability of the poor increased dramatically and charitable generosity often declined. Drawing on a va-

riety of sources from England, France, the Low Coun-tries, Italy, and Iberia, the contributors to this volume add new perspectives on the agency of the poor, the influence of gendered forms of devotion, parallels in Christian and Jewish representations of the deserving and undeserving poor, and the effect of mendicant piety on the status of the involuntary poor. A broader implication of the volume as a whole is that medieval studies of poverty and wealth need to pay more atten-tion to the role of rulers, ruling elites, and public policy in shaping the experiences of the poor.

Une étude sur le sens et les pratiques sociales de l'excommuncation aux premiers siècles du Moyen Âge (IVe-XIIe s.)

L’excommunication et l’anathème, « condamnation à la mort éternelle », théoriquement plus grave mais en réalité devenu rapidement synonyme, sont attestés dès les débuts du christianisme et suivent d’abord une évolution parallèle à celle de la pénitence : ils de-viennent progressivement de moins en moins publics et de plus en plus renouvelables, devenant par là-même des instruments privilégiés du contrôle social par la pression exercée sur l’individu retranché de la communauté chrétienne. Cet ouvrage s'interroge à la fois sur la législation ec-clésiastique dans la longue durée – pour quelle faute encourt-on l’excommunication entre le IVe et le Xe siècle ? – et sur la pertinence de son application sui-vant les différents espaces, afin d'évaluer les modali-tés de la mise en place de cette norme canonique. Il permet de comprendre comment l'excommunication sert à définir et à délimiter les communautés et il étu-die les formules et les rituels mis en œuvre.

Geneviève Bührer-Thierry, professeur d'Histoire du Moyen Âge à l'Université Paris-1-Panthéon-Sorbonne, spécialiste du monde franc et germanique dans le haut Moyen Âge. Stéphane Gioanni, maître de conférences à l’Univer-sité Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne (en détachement), est actuellement directeur des études médiévales à l’École française de Rome. Ses recherches portent sur la réception des textes patristiques dans les collec-tions médiévales et sur l’extension de l’autorité ponti-ficale dans le Royaume de Dalmatie-Croatie.

A comparative history of Rome, Ravenna and Venice through an exploration of their post-Byzantine iden-tity before 1000.

This volume presents most of the papers given at a workshop held in Ox-ford at All Souls College in 2014, part of a research project which focuses on Northern and Central Byzantine and post-Byz-antine Italy between 750 and 1000, and proposes a comparison between the development of three cit-ies: Venice, Ravenna and Rome. These three cities share a common feature,

which is to find themselves outside the framework of Longobard-Frankish power and society. A comparison between them allows us to glimpse the political, so-cial and cultural development of areas in which the points of reference inherited from the past remain always more ‘Roman’ than ‘Longobard’ or ‘Frankish’. Ultimately, its aim is to illuminate the factors which created the political, social, cultural, religious, artistic and material identity of early medieval Rome, Raven-na and Venice, based on their perception of both their past and their contemporary environments.

Veronica West-Harling is a Research Fellow in the History Faculty at Oxford. She has published several books on Anglo-Saxon and Early Medieval Italian history.

A collection of 27 articles on cultural interactions between Ireland, Britain and the Continent during the early Middle Ages. The pivotal role of Ireland in the development of a decidedly Christian culture in early medieval Europe has long been recognized. Still, Irish scholarship on early medieval Ireland has tended not to look beyond the Irish Sea, while continental scholars try to avoid Hibernica by reference to its special Celtic back-ground. Following the lead of the honorand of this volume, Prof. Dáibhí Ó Cróinín, this collection of 27 essays aims at contributing to a reversal of this gen-eral trend. By way of introduction to the period, the first section deals with chronological problems faced by modern scholars as well as the controversial issues relating to the reckoning of time discussed by contem-porary intellectuals. The following three sections then focus on Ireland’s interaction with its neighbours, namely a) Ireland in the Insular world, b) continen-tal influences in Ireland, and c) Irish influences on the Continent. The concluding section is devoted to modern scholarship and the perception of the Middle Ages in modern literature.

Sigebert de Gembloux (1028 env. - 5 octobre 1112) s'est illustré en des genres littéraires très divers, le point culminant de son oeuvre étant sans conteste sa Chronique qui constitue, comme l'écrit très justement M. Chazan, « un des sommets de l'historiographie médiévale ».La recherche à son sujet ne cesse d'évoluer, et l’ou-vrage qu’on présente ici en est sans conteste un pré-cieux jalon. Ce volume réunit les actes du colloque qui s’est tenu à Lille en juin 2013 et a clôturé un programme de recherches international sur la création d’un mythe d’Alexandre dans les littératures européennes (Agence nationale de la Recherche, 2009-2014). L’objectif a été d’examiner les cas singuliers de manuscrits ou d’imprimés qui, dans les différentes littératures européennes du Moyen Âge et du XVIe siècle, portent les témoignages textuels et aussi ma-tériels d’une réception spécifique dans la tradition manuscrite ou imprimée d’une œuvre. Le volume met en perspective les littératures latine, française, anglaise, allemande, néerlandaise, polonaise, ita-lienne, hispanique et aljamiada, byzantine, armé-nienne et russe.

Catherine Gaullier-Bougassas est professeur de langue et de littérature médiévales françaises à l’Uni-versité de Lille 3 et membre de l’Institut universitaire de France. ALEXANDER REDIVIVUSLE MYTHE D'ALEXANDRE LE GRAND

La collection "Alexander redivivus" porte sur la réception de l'histoire et de la légende d'Alexandre le Grand dans les littératures européennes et orientales, principalement dans l'Antiquité tardive, au Moyen Âge et à l'époque moderne. Elle accueille des publica-tions collectives, des outils de travail, des mo-nographies, des éditions et des traductions.

L’histoire de la Perse, de Cyrus à Assuérus, constitue la huitième section de l’Histoire ancienne jusqu’à César, première histoire universelle écrite en prose française, au tout début du XIIIe siècle. Le récit, jusqu’à présent inédit, conduit le lecteur de la réu-nion des royaumes de Mède et de Perse sous l’égide de Cyrus jusqu'au règne d’Assuérus, en passant par les efforts d’extension avortés de Cambyse et de son général Holopherne comme de Xerxès Ier. Ha-bile compilateur, comme l’est tout historien médié-val, l’auteur relate ainsi les principaux événements des royaumes orientaux avant d’aborder l’histoire de la Macédoine et d’Alexandre le Grand (section IX, éditée par Catherine Gaullier-Bougassas dans la même collection). L’édition critique proposée ici se base sur le manuscrit de Paris, Bibliothèque natio-nale de France, fr. 20125, et sur quatre manuscrits de contrôle. Elle est l’occasion de faire le point sur l’ample tradition manuscrite de l’Histoire ancienne, dont la diffusion a été considérable, tant du point de vue numérique (nombre des copies conservées) qu’en termes d’extension géographique, entre la France du Nord, l’Italie et les États latins d’Orient, territoires d’Outre-mer auxquels le noyau ancien des témoins, notamment, est lié.

Anne Rochebouet, archiviste-paléographe, est maître de conférences en langue et littérature mé-diévales à l’Université de Versailles St-Quentin-en-Yvelines. Elle s’intéresse à la réception de la matière antique au Moyen Âge.

La traduction « intralinguale », du « même au même », selon la définition qu’en a donnée Michel Zink, est une invention de ces mêmes clercs médiévaux qui ont mis en communication à travers la translatio studii deux ho-rizons culturels et linguistiques. Cette traduction consti-tue la trace la plus manifeste de l’évolution d’un idiome au sein du diasystème linguistique gallo-roman. Or d’un état à l’autre de la langue française, et contrairement à ce que l’on pourrait croire, ce transfert ne vas pas de soi. D’un côté il continue de témoigner d’une conscience de la différence, de l’autre, à la différence de ce que l’on constate au Moyen Âge, d’une indifférence traductolo-gique affichée des translateurs de notre temps à l’égard de leur acte, des principes qui le fondent comme des choix techniques qui l’expriment. Ce livre met en lu-mière nombre des arguments qui peuvent expliquer ce silence des traducteurs modernes. Les différents tra-vaux rassemblés dans le présent volume suivent quatre perspectives critiques : Théories et méthodologies, Pratiques poétiques, Traductions romanes, Seuils et impasses. Ils abordent différentes facettes de ces ques-tions jusqu’ici inexplorées et présentent des solutions méthodologiques et pragmatiques qui permettront sans doute de dépasser les peurs françaises de la tra-duction intralinguale.

Embrassant toutes les strates du langage, de sa produc-tion à sa réception, les formes vers et prose sont dans une tension constante et évolutive, et invitent à s’interro-ger sur ce qui les sépare et les réunit, d’un point de vue parfois strictement linguistique, parfois plus largement rythmique, générique ou idéologique. Aussi travaillée soit-elle, la question des formes et des usages résiste tou-tefois à une théorisation générale, en raison de l’ampleur du phénomène et des présupposés culturels qu’elle en-gage. L’aborder sous l’angle de la rencontre, « rencontre » en son sens premier de « conflit », mais aussi en celui de « cohabitation, dialogue, échange », est une manière de contourner la difficulté. Ces rencontres, au pluriel donc, se produisent en effet dans divers lieux textuels, et à divers moments, du Moyen Âge à la Renaissance, dans une longue période où se dessinent et se formulent en langue française les expériences et les réflexions et où se dévoilent des imaginaires singuliers. Elles s’éclairent en outre à la lumière des pratiques enregistrées dans les lan-gues voisines. La diversité et la complexité des formules révèlent que le jeu des formes est au cœur de l’identité des langues et de l’image mentale qu’elles renvoient.

This book brings to-gether views from var-ious disciplines on the concept of authority in Greek and Latin litera-ture from Antiquity to the Renaissance. More specifically it deals with the questions how texts attempt to gain authority, and if and how they use—or abuse—earlier writings in the construction of

their own authority. Moreover, this volume examines to what extent a text’s authoritative claims influence its transmission and reception and how these claims themselves are subject to evolution over time. In this context, special attention is devoted to compilation literature (such as anthologies and commonplace books), which is characterized by extensive use of ex-isting source material and thus specifically poses the problem of the role played by compilers in transmit-ting and establishing authority.

Reinhart Ceulemans is a Postdoctoral Fellow of the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO) at the Depart-ment of Greek Studies of the KU Leuven.

Este volumen ofrece un texto, inédito hasta este mo-mento, sobre dos figuras emblemáticas de la antigüe-dad clásica: las de Aníbal y Escipión. La obra original con el título de Vitae Hannibalis et Scipionis, fue es-crita hacia 1467 en latín por Donato Acciaiuoli, uno de los grandes humanistas italianos en la Florencia de los Medici; mientras que la traducción castellana se realizó unos años más tarde (Sevilla, 1491), a manos del que fuera cronista de los Reyes Católicos, Alfonso de Palencia. El punto central de nuestra investigación ha sido el texto castellano y el método de traducción utilizado por el traductor castellano. Así mismo, ofrecemos, por primera vez, la edición de la traducción palentina acompañada del texto original latino utilizado (Vene-cia 1478).

Susanna Allés Torrent es doctora en Filología Románi-ca por la Universitat de Barcelona. Su tesis doctoral obtuvo el III Premio Internacional Ana María Aldama Roy de Tesis Doctorales, y fruto de ello es esta mo-nografía.

Catherine Benincasa a marqué son époque. Elle naît à Sienne, en l’année 1347. Tertiaire dominicaine et théologienne ne sachant pas écrire et ignorant le latin, elle est proclamée Docteur de l’Église. Elle est patronne et inspiratrice de la réforme dominicaine et du renouveau de l’Église. Il nous reste aujourd’hui deux rédactions, indépen-dantes l’une de l’autre, de la légende de sainte Ca-therine de Sienne en français médiéval. Toutes les deux descendent de la Legenda Maior de Raymond de Capoue, confesseur de la Sainte. L’une, composée en 1430 et conservée en deux manuscrits, est une traduction plutôt fidèle de la source latine. L'autre est une adaptation (au sens large) de l’original latin, et un abrégé en même temps. Composée en 1458, elle est conservée en six manuscrits. Alors, en somme huit éditions médiévales, ce qui est relativement beau-coup et ce qui est peu.

Surtout connu pour son quartier gallo-ro-main, le site archéolo-gique de Saint-Romain-en-Gal a également révélé des vestiges de l’Antiquité tardive et du Haut Moyen Âge qui font l’objet de cet ouvrage. Les fouilles réalisées au cours des années 1990-2000 ont révélé l’existence d’une

aire funéraire située aux portes de la ville de Vienne et plus particulièrement la présence d’un édifice fu-néraire, original, le plus vaste connu à ce jour dans la région pour la période couvrant les IVe et Ve siècles. Les particularités de ce bâtiment et l’histoire de ses transformations livrent un ensemble exceptionnel d’informations qui éclaire aussi bien les pratiques funéraires que le contexte topographique de Vienne après la récession de son espace urbain.

Ils sont illustrés au travers de nombreuses monographies d’ateliers de potiers, de synthèses locales et régionales et, en annexe, d’un corpus exhaustif des sites. Enfin, deux in-troductions, l’une historique, l’autre archéologique, et une conclusion très étoffée mettent en contexte et en perspective l’ensemble de ces travaux.

Considered the most im-portant French Renais-sance church, Saint-Eu-stache in Paris has long

remained an enigma. What new circumstances allowed its parishioners, long desirous of a new church, sudden-ly to begin buiding it 1532? Did Francis I play a role? Was the obscure Jean Delamarre possibly its architect? Could the ideas of the Italian theorist, Serlio, have af-fected his design? These and other key issues are re-solved by the author in a sustained reading of all known evidence. The building is studied within the context of sixteenth-century French architecture and its roots in antiquity, the Italian Renaissance, Romanesque and Gothic France, and the Flamboyant Style.

A leading scholar in French Renaissance architecture, Anne-Marie Sankovitch (1958-2005) studied at Smith College and received her Ph.D. from the Institute of Fine Arts, NYU (1991), where she later became Re-search Associate. This book offers a new, revised building history of

the Bargello, the first town hall of Florence. A care-ful analysis of documents, fabric, and restoration allows us to reconstruct the original site. It reveals two previously unidentified building stages. The first palace, begun in 1255, adapted an ex-neighborhood consortium, reusing an old tower and three hous-es. In the 1280s, a second palace arose next to it, thus creating a twin-palace complex for the Podestà and Capitano, the highest-ranking public officials. Long misidentified as the 1255 palace, the front wing's lower two stories were actually built in 1291-1308. An unroofed precinct wall enclosed the older structures behind a monumental facade, forming an open-air courtyard used for tribunals and stables. This part became known as the “old palace” when the large, arcaded courtyard and rear wing were addded in 1316-1322. The "new palace" con-taining the Magdalen Chapel was designed for the Angevin court in residence, not for the communal administration of justice as generally believed.After a 1332 fire devastated the upper stories, the front wing was covered with two immense roof vaults in 1332-1346. Inside, many old dividing walls survived until the nineteenth century. They were demolished with the prisons during the building's conversion into the present national museum, con-cocting the two vast exhibition halls. This book illustrates the Bargello's early architecture. Reinterpreting the timeline radically changes our un-derstanding of the palace's construction, function, and urban context during the formation of early modern Florence.

Specialized in late medieval and Renaissance Italy, Amee Yunn concentrated in government as an un-dergraduate at Harvard and received her PhD from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. Her research interests are Florence, civic patronage of art, iconography, reuse of materials in building, conservation and restoration. She has worked in various museums, including the Metropolitan Mu-seum of Art in New York, and is currently at Chubb & Son.

At the intersection of social history and intellectual histo-ry, Images of Discord shows in which ways religious and social conflicts determined the status and development of sacred art in late fifteenth- and early sixteenth-cen-tury Castile and Andalusia and, more broadly, the histo-ry of Spanish art in the early modern period.

This book examines the career of the Brussels artist Michael Sweerts through an examination of the ar-tistic, intellectual and cultural contexts that shaped his work and academy in the Netherlands and Italy in the seventeenth century.

The Flemish artist Mi-chael Sweerts has long been considered one of the most fascinating and enigmatic paint-ers of the seventeenth century. His peripatetic career, which stretched from his native Brus-sels to Rome, and later Amsterdam and the Far East, included work for the papal family and

the foundation of a drawing academy in the South-ern Netherlands. Despite this rich and varied career, Sweerts has yet to be fully examined within the artis-tic, intellectual and cultural contexts of Brussels and Rome in the seventeenth century. This book aims to retrace the artistic traditions that shaped Sweerts’ development and evolution as a painter, etcher and teacher, firmly situating him at the crossroads of artis-tic exchange between the Netherlands and Italy. The author demonstrates how Sweerts responded to con-temporary notions of artistic practice and pedagogy in his work, and how he played a critical role in the formation of a Netherlandish academic tradition. Approaching Sweerts from these new perspectives, this book examines the classicizing and artistic con-texts of Brussels as a center of tapestry production, and reconstructs Sweerts’ familial and social networks in the Netherlands and Rome. The artist emerges as a sophisticated figure amongst his contemporaries, including the French painter Nicholas Poussin (1594-1665), his patron, Camillo Pamphilj (1622-1666), nephew of Pope Innocent X, and the Flemish sculptor François Duquesnoy (1597-1643). Alongside a consid-eration of his sensitive scenes of peasants and artists in Rome’s urban landscape and strikingly life-like por-traits and head studies, Sweerts’ remarkable depic-tions of artists learning and practicing their profession are contextualized within the evolving conceptions of the academy in the early modern period. The author provides the first inclusive investigation of the artis-tic and socioeconomic frameworks that surrounded Sweerts’ establishment of a drawing academy for art-ists and tapestry designers in Brussels in the 1650s. She brings to light the academy’s significance as a site of artistic learning and innovation, and the impor-tance of working directly from life, while ultimately redefining Sweerts’ place in the history of Flemish art.

The painter Joos van Cleve (c. 1485/90-1540/41) founded an important and influential workshop in Antwerp at the beginning of the sixteenth cen-tury. His business instinct and managerial charac-ter ensured that the shop ran smoothly and that there were both local and international clients for his output. More than 300 works are currently attributed to Van Cleve and his workshop. It is a remarkably large oeuvre, far exceeding that of any other contemporary Antwerp artist. The paint-ings that left his shop are of a superb quality and craftsmanship. Van Cleve and his assistants were responsible for lifelike portraits, altarpieces of varying sizes, and the mass production of popu-lar devotional panels with subjects like The Holy Family, The Madonna of the Cherries and The Infants Christ and St John the Baptist Embracing. How, then, is it possible that these paintings are of such a high quality and craftsmanship? This book contains the answer. The international na-ture of Antwerp’s economy, and of its art trade in particular, made Joos van Cleve and his paintings known far beyond the confines of the Low Coun-tries. Although the information about his life and the composition of his oeuvre was unclear for a long time, Joos van Cleve can now once again be numbered among the great successful painters of the early sixteenth century.

Micha Leeflang (1975) studied technical art his-tory at the University of Groningen. From 2005 to 2007 she was on the staff of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam as curatorial researcher. Since 2007 she has been a curator at Museum Catharijnecon-vent in Utrecht.

C’est aux diverses modalités de cette « in-carnation » qu’était consacré le colloque international organisé à l’Université de Namur en mai 2012, dont les contributions sont ici réunies. Cambridge is one of the world’s richest reposi-tories for the study of French illuminated man-uscripts. Part Three of the series of catalogues cov-ering the Western manu-scripts at the Fitzwilliam Museum and the Cam-bridge Colleges is dedicat-ed to France. This is the first volume, containing ninety-three manuscripts

dating from c.1000 to c.1250. The later manuscripts overlap with material that will be included in the next volume of Part Three.

This volume contains an impressive range of texts, from Horace (Cat. 17) and Ovid (Cat. 61) to the earli-est known copy of the Collectio Lanfranci (Cat. 5) and Gerard of Cremona’s translations of Rasis’ works (Cat. 93). The bulk, however, consists of Bibles of two kinds: imposing glossed books, produced in great numbers in the twelfth-century, and their thirteenth-century successors, the compact pandects. Both categories include some of the most richly illuminated French manuscripts of the period. Among the former are two deluxe sets made for Thomas Becket, the first completed while he was in exile in Pontigny and Sens from 1164 until 1170 (Cat. 27-31), the second edited after his martyrdom by his secretary Herbert of Bosham (Cat. 32-34). The majority of the thir-teenth-century Bibles are so-called ‘Paris’ or ‘pocket’ Bibles produced from the 1220s onwards, mostly in Paris, and containing the biblical books in a standard order. They are illuminated in a variety of figure and ornamental styles, some comparable to the Bibles moralisées of c.1220-1240 (e.g. Cat. 72), others bear-ing no resemblance to them (e.g. Cat. 73). There are also notable exceptions of complete Bibles made not in Paris, but in North-Eastern France or Champagne (e.g. Cat. 70), and displaying iconography, figure styles and order of books different from those found in their better-known Parisian contemporaries. We hope that the inclusion of numerous images in full colour rep-resenting Bibles illuminated in all of these different styles will inspire and support further research, espe-cially on the ornamental initials which deserve more attention. While this volume contains outstanding examples of illumination, notably the work of the itin-erant Simon Master (Cat. 46), it also includes books

In addition to the illustrated edition and study of 258 charters on parchment and 58 wooden tallies with Hebrew inscriptions, this book provides fresh insights into the historical, legal and administrative background of the documents' production and use, and their external diplomat-ic and palaeographical features. Throughout the book, the documents are portrayed as a meeting point between Jewish and non-Jewish legal and intellectual traditions.

This volume offers a new intellectual framework for early print that bridges divisions between the study of print and the study of literature, between man-uscripts and printed books, and between pre- and post-1500 textual cultures. By following early print across a range of genres (history writing, religious in-struction, hagiography, law books, and translation), this study also sheds light on the contexts within which the agencies of early printers mattered, including mer-cantile politics, civic and statute law, and theological economics. The volume, which treats the pre-Reforma-tion press as a whole, is based in particular on the bib-liographical evidence provided in editions by William Caxton, Wynkyn de Worde, Richard Pynson, John Ras-tell, and Thomas Berthelet, as well as on close readings of texts and contextual materials. The questions raised here, however, are about more than old books and ear-ly printers: ultimately, this study argues that the history of the material book is an intellectual history of agency and textual production.

The period between the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries saw significant discussion in Italy about the two different polit-ical models of republicanism and seignorialism, reaching a climax at the end of the Trecento when the most in-fluential scholars of Florence and Venice began to attack the despotism imposed on Milan by the Visconti. In this

book, the two systems of government represented in Italy are revisited, the arguments put forward by their supporters are compared and contrasted, and the de-velopment in the use of political language, especially in the city-states of Central and Northern Italy, is explored. The reality, it is suggested, is that the political systems of republicanism and seignorialism were not so very different. Republican governments ignored universal suffrage, those supported by signori did not always run totalitarian governments, and in both cases, power continued to be held by recurring oligarchical groups who were unwilling to enter into constructive dia-logue with their opponents. However, as the two sides fought for power, the political arena became the testing ground for new forms of communication that could be used to manage and manipulate public opinion.

It traces the transformations of church interiors from c. 1450 to 1600 (thus covering both the emergence and impact of the Danish Reformation) by interpreting material changes within a broad histor-ical perspective that highlights changes in religious practices and liturgy. The book explores the spatial and artistic implications of liturgy as well as the role of the congregation, the donor, and the clergy both in shaping and disrupting these interiors. It sets out to answer four basic questions: What did these rural churches look like by the middle of the fifteenth cen-tury? How did they change from the middle of the fif-teenth century to the end of the sixteenth? How were they used and integrated into public as well as private ceremonies? And how may these churches have been perceived and experienced by the congregation and clergy? This study seeks to establish a methodologi-cal framework that incorporates the disciplines of ar-chaeology, art history, history, and theology, in order to facilitate an overall understanding of the architec-tural setting, embracing spatial, material, and artistic elements within the church through liturgy.

The Grand Ducal Medici and their Archive offers a unique window into early modern Florentine society through an exploration of the archives of the Medici ruling family. Teeming with four and a half million let-ters, the archival collection of the Medici Grand Dukes housed at the Archivio di Stato in Florence chronicles the culture and history of Europe and beyond, for a span of over two hundred years. The letters of this col-lection, known as the Mediceo del Principato, embrace a great variety of themes including diplomacy, art, med-icine, food, science, and material culture. Since its con-tents originate from a court archive that served both the state and a ruling family, the collection comprises administrative, political and financial correspondence as well as more private and intimate accounts of the Medici themselves and their activity at court. It would be a great misconception to assume that this enor-mous archival collection pertains just to Florence or to just the Medici, given that the vast majority of these missives were written by ambassadors, agents, and informants stationed throughout Europe. This volume, The Grand Ducal Medici and their Archive, aims to un-lock not only the complex structure of the Mediceo del Principato but also the richness of its content. The six-teen essays address a variety of topics---book history, Ottoman relations, collections of New World artifacts, medical history, gender studies, and material culture---all with direct reference to the Medici Grand Duchy. The original research that supports these studies was drawn in part from the Medici Archive Project's online platform (BIA) for querying over 350,000 digitized and/or transcribed letters. Making use of these and other original sources, the essays in The Grand Ducal Medici and their Archive shed new light on the mechanisms and strategies that enabled Florence to emerge from decades of internecine conflict and diplomatic chaos in order to enjoy cultural and political prominence.

The point of departure and thematic node of this series are the history of Medici dynasty and their cultural and political primacy in sixteenth- to eigh-teenth-century Europe. Significant attention will be paid to those scholarly works that employ the four million letter archive (Mediceo del Principato) of the Medici Grand Dukes (1537-1743). MAP's mission is to make this vast, largely unpublished archival ma-terial available: currently, MAP's on-line platform "BIA" features over 25,000 transcribed and circa 350,000 digitized letters. In order to further corner the market of archival and Medici studies, this series will also consider manuscripts that have elaborated an early modern topic using significant and original archival sources outside the Mediceo del Principa-to and in which the Medici – both the merchant/banking family of the Quattrocento and the Grand Ducal dynasty (1537-1743) – are treated less prom-inently. MAP intends to promote both traditional monographic studies as well as collections of essays. The range of topics includes art history, diplomatic history history of collecting, religious history, histo-ry of medicine, history of music, history of science, book history and military history in Renaissance and early modern Europe, with a particular emphasis on Tuscany and Italy.

When a professional orchestra today plays an eighteenth-centu-ry work with parts for wind and brass instru-ments, nothing seems amiss. Yet writers in the eighteenth cen-tury and beyond indi-cate that many notes in these scores could not be played in tune by these instruments; certain notes could be

produced only with difficulty or not at all. The present work concentrates on the time period least explored in modern writings — the years before Hector Berlioz’s “Grand traité d’instrumentation et d’orchestration modernes” (1843) — and traces the development of instrumentation instruction for composers from its beginnings in the late eighteenth century, after the era of J. S. Bach and G. F. Handel. An introductory chapter includes background information on subjects related to the discussion: intonation, tuning, key action, the lack of a standard pitch level, and the difficulty of reed mak-ing. While earlier manuals supply little but the range of instruments, Valentin Roeser’s “Essai d’instruction à l’usage de ceux qui composent pour la clarinette et le cor” (1764) offers composers concrete assistance in writing for the clarinet and horn. Louis-Joseph Fran-coeur’s “Diapason général de tous les instrumens à vent” (1772) provides the same for all the winds and brass, as does Othon Vandenbroeck’s “Traité général de tous les instrumens à vent à l’usage des composi-teurs” (c.1793). This book is not a history of instrumen-tation per se, but an account of technological progress and ever-increasing knowledge.

The subject of this monograph is protest music and ‘dissident’ composers and musicians during the twentieth century, with a particular focus on the forms with which dissent may be expressed in mu-sic and the ways composers and performers have adopted stances on political and social dissent. In the present volume, twenty-one articles by scholars of different nationalities explore not only the way in which protest music is articulated in artistic-cultural discourse and the political matter, but also the role it played in situations of mutual benefit. Moreover, the phenomenon of dissent has been investigated within the contexts of musical historiography and criticism, approaching the topic from historical, so-ciological and philosophical points.

This publication is the revised, expanded, and updated version of the book in French that appeared in 2010 from the same publisher: Les ducs d’Arenberg et la musique au xviiie siècle. Histoire d’une collection musi-cale. The study explores in depth the development of a music collection created by one of the most influential

noble European families under the Ancien Régime – a family resident in the Spanish and then the Austrian Netherlands, the territory of the future state of Bel-gium. Today forming an integral part of the private family archives kept at Enghien (in the Hainaut region of Belgium), this exceptional collection of manuscripts and prints from all over Europe began to expand in the last years of the seventeenth century, and grew gradu-ally and continually throughout the eighteenth century. Analysing this collection has afforded a rare opportu-nity to discover and identify musical sources entirely unknown to us until now; these include works by the Italians Alessandro Scarlatti, Pietro Torri, and Antonio Vivaldi. With the aid of unpublished archival material, it has proved possible also to relate and explain how this important music collection was amassed, and, through the prism of the musical affinities of an aristocratic fam-ily, to illustrate the evolution of taste in eighteenth-cen-tury Europe.The introduction to the book sets out key milestones in the history of the Arenbergs and their music library.

Judaïsme, christianisme, islam ont en Europe une his-toire millénaire. Ces monothéismes se différencient par leur poids respectif, par les moments de leur ins-cription sur le continent et par leurs inégaux rapports avec le pouvoir : le christianisme a été adopté par un très grand nombre d’habitants et est devenu – avec d’importantes variations selon les lieux et les époques – une religion officielle, faisant face, dès lors, à des re-ligions minoritaires. La structuration du continent en États et la division du christianisme lui-même, entre le Moyen Age et le XVIe siècle, ont placé les minorités dans une situation souvent instable et douloureuse. Ainsi s’expliquent, pour partie, la lutte contre les « hé-résies », les guerres de religion, l’expulsion des juifs de plusieurs royaumes européens (et aussi l’expulsion de Musulmans de la Sicile et de la péninsule ibérique), la « question juive » au XIXe siècle et jusqu’à la Shoah. C’est ce passé que réveille, depuis la fin du XXe siècle, le débat sur la place de l’islam et les manières de ma-nifester sa foi dans l’espace public. Les 13 études réunies dans ce volume étudient les manières dont les États ont traité leurs minorités re-ligieuses. On y voit des politiques diverses envers des minorités religieuses– répression, encadrement, inté-gration, tolérance, laïcité, indifférence – ainsi que de diverses manières dont les minorités ont accueilli les exigences de la majorité. La relation n’est pas unila-térale : au contraire, les politiques étatiques donnent lieu à des résistances, des négociations (sur le plan légal, politique, culturel, etc.) ou compromis. En 1976, Rudolf Goy recensait quelque 1350 manus-crits comportant une ou plusieurs œuvres de Hugues de Saint-Victor; en 2005 son répertoire des manuscrits de Richard de Saint-Victor (Bibliotheca Victorina, 18) re-pérait 900 témoins. Depuis 1975 ont vu le jour quelque 250 catalogues de manuscrits et des descriptions de fonds de bibliothèques sont désormais « en ligne »: un travail de « filtrage » s’imposait. Des catalogues, restés inaccessibles, ont pu être atteints. L’examen direct de très nombreux témoins pour l’édition en cours de Hugues au Corpus christianorum a repéré maints textes victorins encore passés inaperçus. Enfin, d’autres sources de ren-seignements devaient être interrogées : descriptions de manuscrits accompagnant des entreprises d’édition de corpus entiers, répertoires thématiques, introductions des grandes collections. Un dépouillement systématique de cet ensemble a permis d’élargir considérablement le nombre des mss recensés des deux grands Victorins. En bien des cas, on a pu apporter des précisions ou recti-ficatifs (datations, origine, foliotations) aux données premières. Sont signalés en leur lieu les apports des der-nières années touchant l’histoire littéraire ou la critique d’authenticité. Ce répertoire s’est également proposé un relevé méthodique des manuscrits des « Miscellanées » hugoniennes, jusque-là sommairement signalés. On a localisé les pieces de ce corpus spécifique et évolutif, ré-unies par Hugues ou le premier éditeur médiéval de ses œuvres et indiqué celles auxquelles fut parfois conférée une autonomie, celles auxquelles devra s’intéresser la critique d’authenticité, celles enfin qui, encore inédites, sont à considérer comme authentiques. Pseudépi-graphes et oeuvres inauthentiques ont été répertoriés avec, quand on l’a pu, l’attribution portée par les manus-crits, qui peut aider à discerner les points d’émergence de ces attributions fautives. Sont relevés épitaphes, notes biographiques, miniatures et enluminures, mentions et éléments relatifs à des œuvres hugoniennes ou ricar-diennes. Un index cumulatif des deux répertoires anté-rieurs et du présent Iter est joint.

Chercheur associé à l’Institut de Recherche et d’Histoire des Textes (C.N.R.S.), Patrice Sicard codirige les collec-tions Bibliotheca victorina, Sous la Règle de Saint-Augus-tin et la série Hugonis de Sancto Victore opera du Corpus Christianorum. La monographie est dédiée à la doctrine d'Anselme de Lucques, l'évêque italien du XIe siècle, devenu le canoniste important et le participant actif de la que-relle des investitures. La monographie publiée d’Andrey Mitrofanov traite de l’ecclésiologie d’Anselme, évêque de Lucques (1036-1086) considérée dans le cadre de la Réforme grégorienne et dans la perspective d’une comparai-son avec la discipline générale de l’Église ancienne. La « Collection canonique » composée circa 1083 et attribuée à Anselme de Lucques est un recueil de droit canonique utilisé pour les buts de la Réforme du pape Grégoire VII. Comme le montre l’auteur, l’idée de la monarchie pontificale était un élément principal et essentiel de l’ecclésiologie d’Anselme ; or la vision anselmienne de l’Église exprimée dans ses oeuvres s’appuyait sur les «Fausses Décretales » (IXe siècle). En outre, la discipline générale de l’Église ancienne – les canons des conciles tant locaux qu’œcuméniques – fournissait peu de ressources accordées à cette conception. Comme le dit l'auteur, la contradiction entre l’ecclésiologie pontificale d’Anselme et la théo-rie byzantine de la pentarchie n’était qu’un résultat de l’adaptation différente des textes paléochrétiens.

L'auteur, Andrey Mitrofanov, a terminé ses études superieures à l'Université de Saint-Petersbourg en 2004. Il a défendu sa première thèse dédiée aux conciles locaux de l'Italie tardoantique avec la pro-motion de Galina Lebedeva, professeur de l'histoire byzantine en 2007.

Le judaïsme était so-lidement enraciné en Arabie quand Mu .ham-mad fils de 'Abd Allāh, le prophète de l’islam, s’est engagé dans une nouvelle voie. On le sait par les auteurs de langues grecque et sy-riaque de l’Antiquité tar-dive et par la Tradition arabo-musulmane. Par ailleurs, depuis l’islami-sation de l’Arabie, il y

a toujours eu des juifs, principalement au Yémen.Cependant, on a d’ordinaire considéré ces sources manuscrites, recopiées avec des erreurs, corrigées, remaniées, amplifiées et parfois falsifiées, avec une grande suspicion. On a notamment douté que le Yémen antique (le royaume de .Himyar) ait été juif et que ses rois aient dominé une grande par-tie de l’Arabie. Depuis une cinquantaine d’an-nées, les recherches archéologiques apportent des confirmations et des correctifs. La décou-verte de dizaines d’inscriptions et de graffites au Yémen et dans le .Hijāz en Arabie séoudite a mis en évidence que le judaïsme s’était enraciné en Arabie dès les premiers siècles de l’ère chrétienne et qu’il était dominant au Yémen à partir du IVe s., et pro-bablement plus tôt dans certaines oasis du .Hijāz. Le christianisme, qui a eu de nombreux adeptes dans les îles du golfe Arabo-persique et sur les côtes, ne s’est propagé au Yémen que tardivement dans quelques régions périphériques. Le judaïsme de l’Arabie antique dresse le premier inventaire exhaus-tif de toutes les données disponibles. Il tente égale-ment de dépasser cette première étape en mettant en évidence une série de petits faits qui permettent de s’interroger sur la nature du judaïsme qui s’est répandu en Arabie à partir du IIe s.

Ben Sira prétendait que Siméon le Juste avait « fon-dé la double hauteur » de la Bible. Il entendait par là que, derrière le sens apparent de la narration biblique, le Grand Prêtre avait codé un sens allégo-rique que seuls les initiés pouvaient connaître, un sens caché conservé intact jusqu’à aujourd’hui.

Les Evangélistes se souvenaient d’un vieillard nommé Siméon, qui était juste et qui devait attendre, aussi longtemps qu’il le faudrait, la venue du Sauveur an-noncé par les Écritures. Lorsqu’il vit Jésus, il sut que cette attente interminable prenait fin, attesta que Jésus était bien ce Sauveur et demanda au Seigneur de le rappeler enfin à lui. Les Juifs se souvenaient également d’un personnage nommé Siméon le Juste. Pendant la première partie de sa vie il avait fait par-tie de la Grande Assemblée où siégeaient les derniers prophètes et avait parlé d’une seule voix avec eux, puis il s’était laissé séduire par les beautés de l’hel-lénisme, ce qui lui avait valu de mourir à la moitié de ses jours. Par des biais différents, Juifs et Chré-tiens s’accordaient à faire de ce Siméon de légende le symbole d’un passé révolu. Derrière la légende se cache l’histoire d’un grand prêtre de la période hel-lénistique, Siméon fils d’Onias. Sa famille, originaire d’Egypte, avait obtenu des rois grecs d’Alexandrie la charge héréditaire de grand prêtre du Temple de Jérusalem, une charge que Siméon occupa de 220 à 195 avant notre ère. Pour Jésus ben Sira, son contem-porain, il avait été, avant tout, celui qui «avait fondé la double hauteur», ce qui signifiait qu’il avait doublé le sens superficiel de la Bible hébraïque d’un sens al-légorique caché sous les lettres même de l’Écriture. Aussi improbable que puisse nous paraître une telle thèse, elle méritait d’être vérifiée. Et effectivement, ce monument «à double hauteur» enfoui sous les alluvions de plus de vingt siècles d’histoire de l’in-terprétation du texte biblique est demeuré intact. Maître de conférences d’hébreu biblique et de littérature intertestamentaire à l’Université Nancy II de 1970 à 1978, puis de 1981 à 2005 à l’Université Jean Moulin de Lyon, Bernard Barc a été aussi professeur invité à l’Université Laval à Quebec de 1978 à 1980, dans le cadre de l’Edition des textes de la Bibliothèque Copte de Nag Hammadi (BCNH). Il est l’auteur de plusieurs volumes de la Biblio-thèque Copte ainsi que de publications relatives à l’his-toire de l’herméneutique juive ancienne.L’auteur a enseigné l'hébreu biblique et la littérature juive ancienne aux universités de Nancy et de Lyon entre 1966 et 2005. Professeur invité à l'Université La-val de Québec de 1978 à 1980, il a par ailleurs partici-pé, depuis cette période, à l'édition de la Bibliothèque copte de Nag-Hammadi (BCNH). Dans ces deux do-maines, il s'est avant tout intéressé à mettre en lu-mière les règles anciennes d'interprétation de la Bible.

Les recherches historiques sur le judaïsme des pre-miers siècles de notre ère subissent de nombreux changements de perspectives depuis près d’une décennie, même s’ils se fondent sur les ouvrages précurseurs d’Erwin R. Goodenough dont un des premiers remontent à 1935. Pour le développe-ment du judaïsme dans l’Antiquité classique et tardive, cet ouvrage explore la thèse d’un scénario à trois dimensions : celle d’un judaïsme synagogal (subsistant après la destruction du Temple de Jé-rusalem en 70, tant en Palestine qu’en Diaspora, et réunissant la classe des prêtres et celle des no-tables qui en prennent la direction dans le cadre de ce que l’on appelle la synagogue qui est leur lieu de culte privilégié), celle d’un mouvement chrétien (où se retrouvent des Judéens et des Grecs – ces derniers étant alors des « sympathisants ») et celle d’un mouvement rabbinique (où se réunissent des disciples autour de leurs « sages ») – si le premier a été très majoritaire, les deux autres ont été plus que minoritaires.

Claire Clivaz est professeur invitée à l'Université de Lausanne et mène ses recherches au carrefour du Nouveau Testament et des Humanités Digitales. Dom Donation De Bruyne's work of a century ago has been all but unobtainable since it was first pub-lished quasi-anonymously just after the Great War. Originally conceived as an instrumentum laboris to the great Benedictine project to produce a critical edition of the Vulgate, it now has a new life as a unique collection of the many texts that were pre-sented with, or alongside, the biblical text until the end of the Middle Ages. These texts predisposed readers as to what they found in the sacred texts, and how they imagined the collection as a whole. While these texts have been passed over for cen-turies by exegetes concerned with the interpreta-tion of scripture, for anyone studying te history of the bible in western culture, the reception of the scriptures or the history of exegesis - or indeed the history of Latin theology - these short works are of crucial importance. They set the scene for exegesis and established the assumptions that created that universe of interpretation. They are, in short, the key to the medieval biblical paradigm.This collection makes available the raw material for a new chapter in the study of the Latin bible and the study of its reception in the later patristic and medie-val periods. Moreover, it may usher in a new chapter in the history of biblical exegesis.

Contesta poi sul terreno insidioso della riflessione teologica l’esistenza stessa di una reliquia di Cristo, che minerebbe l’utilità del rito eu-caristico, prima di arrivare ad attaccare direttamente, tacciandoli di blasfemia, i Sanctimedardenses e la loro propaganda, giudicata un potenziale pericolo per i fe-deli, spinti da quel falso residuo terreno, mendace tes-timone di una resurrezione incompleta del Salvatore, a mettere in dubbio la speranza nella propria. Nell’ultima parte, aliena dai toni polemici dei precedenti e di diver-so contenuto, tratta di questioni relative al mondo spiri-tuale e della sua distanza da quello fisico. Il testo nell’in-sieme costituisce una fonte preziosa su un fenomeno religioso e di costume tra i più rilevanti del medioevo ed un importante tassello all’interno della variegata produzione di un autore medievale tra i più originali.

Le présent volume offre la traduction française des 108 sermons d'Hermann de Reun.

D’Hermann on sait seulement qu’il est l’auteur de ces sermons et qu’il devait être chargé de la bibliothèque du monastère ; on peut supposer qu’il en fut aussi l’abbé. Reun se situait aux confins de l’Empire, ce qui serait actuellement l’Est de l’Autriche, près de Graz. C’était un monastère cistercien de la lignée de Mori-mont, fondé en 1129. Cette centaine de sermons est à dater du dernier quart du XIIe siècle. En plusieurs séries, ils ponctuent les grandes fêtes liturgiques de l’année. Ce qui les caractérise, ce sont les très nom-breux emprunts – des emprunts de détail ou de longs extraits – à d’autres prédicateurs : les Pères de l’Eglise d’abord (comme Augustin et Grégoire le Grand), et par ailleurs des auteurs du Moyen Âge (comme Bède, Paschase Radbert et saint Bernard) dont certains sont contemporains de l’auteur (comme Rupert de Deutz ou Radulfe de Cantorbery). Pourtant le tissu de ces textes est unifié et ne laisse guère deviner la diversité de ces sources : sur telle fête l’auteur peut aligner plu-sieurs sermons sans se répéter. D’une part il enseigne, en particulier sur le mystère de l’incarnation du Christ et de sa préparation en la Vierge Marie. Et d’autre part il exhorte, appliquant le mystère à la vie chrétienne, dans une prédication de la repentance surtout, du retour à Dieu, mais riche de thèmes divers. En plus d’une importante source historique de la prédication au Moyen Âge, on trouvera des index et des sous-titres, de quoi nourrir une vie spirituelle aujourd’hui.

Les sermons sont restés inédits pour la plupart jusqu’à l’édition critique donnée par E. Mikkers en 1986 dans le Corpus Christianorum. Conntinuatio Mediaeualis (CCCM 64). Des renvois aux pages correspondantes de l’édition sont fournis dans les marges de cette pu-blication.

Le traducteur, Pierre-Yves Emery, est frère de la Com-munauté de Taizé ; depuis plus de quarante ans il tra-duit des textes cisterciens, à commencer par certaines œuvres de Bernard de Clairvaux.

William Durand (c. 1230-Nov. 1, 1296), Bishop of Mende, France, was unquestionably the most re-nowned liturgical scholar of the later Middle Ages. His encyclopedic allegorical exposition of the rites and worship services of the Latin Church, the Rationale divinorum officiorum, or "Rationale for the divine of-fices," is the best known medieval work in its genre. Book 5, Durand’s detailed commentary on the Divine Office, has never been translated into English. The present volume makes this important text available for modern students of liturgy, musicology, theolo-gy, and art history for whom the original Latin text is not accessible. The present translation also provides extensive annotation and explanation of Durand’s sometimes cryptic etymologies, while bringing to light important source material embedded within his com-mentary.The source text of this volume appeared in Corpus Christianorum Continuatio Mediaeualis as Guillelmus Durantus - Rationale divinorum officiorum V-VI (CCCM 140A). References to the corresponding pages of the Corpus Christianorum edition are provided in the margins of this translation.

Timothy M. Thibodeau is Professor of History at Na-zareth College of Rochester (USA). He co-edited, with Anselme Davril, O.S.B., the Latin edition of the Ra-tionale that was published by Corpus Christianorum, Continuatio Mediaevalis.

Novatian was a priest of Rome in the third century who wrote a commentary on the Rule of Faith, commonly titled, On the Trinity. Although the document is not well known outside of the field of early Christian studies, it made an important contribution to the doctrine of the Trinity in the early Church, and as several scholars have maintained, it helped set the stage for the definition of the faith known as the Nicene Creed. Novatian would eventually find himself at the center of a controversy which led to a schism of the Church, and so his works were relegated to obscurity for centuries. However, in its time, Novatian’s On the Trinity was the epitome of Roman theology, and as some have argued, it was even ahead of its time. The present volume contains the complete works of Novatian translated into English, with an introduction and full bibliography of Novatian studies. This new translation takes into account the lat-est scholarship on Novatian, and brings the documents up to a new level of clarity and readability. The source text of this volume appeared in Corpus Christianorum Series Latina as Novatianus – Opera quae supersunt (CCSL 4), edited by G. F. Diercks. References to the cor-responding pages of the Corpus Christianorum edition are provided in the margins of this translation.

James L. Papandrea received his Masters of Divinity degree from Fuller Theological Seminary, and his Ph.D. in early Christian studies from Northwestern University. He is currently Associate Professor of Church History at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Se-minary, where he teaches the history and theology of the early and medieval Church.

Après avoir édité le texte des Questions évangéliques d’Eusèbe de Césarée (env. 265-env. 340) dans la forme abrégée sous laquelle il nous est parvenu, Claudio Za-magni livre ici son commentaire de ce texte. Le texte originel de cet ouvrage d’Eusèbe est perdu. Il compor-tait deux parties. La première, dédiée à un certain Sté-phanos, traitait des problèmes concernant les généalo-gies de Jésus d’après les évangiles ; la deuxième, faisant intervenir un autre questionneur, Marinos, concernait la résurrection de Jésus ainsi que les visions des anges, les apparitions du Ressuscité aux disciples. En grec, le texte est connu par des fragments provenant principa-lement de la chaîne de Nicétas d’Héraclée sur Luc et de manuscrits d’autres genres de recueils, et par une sélection (eklogè) en abrégé, fondée sur l’ensemble de l’ouvrage. La tradition syriaque est elle-même double : une version faite au tournant du VIIe au VIIIe siècle, qui donne un résumé par rapport aux traditions grecques disponibles, et une autre, plus ancienne, peut-être du Ve siècle, connue par l’intermédiaire de Commentaires Évangéliques de Georges de Belthan (VIIIe s.) et de Denys bar Salibi (XIIe s.). Le commentaire de Claudio Za-magni s’attache à la comparaison de l’eklogè et des frag-ments de Nicétas, qui offrent un texte élargi, sans cou-vrir l’ensemble présent dans la sélection des Questions à Stéphanos, et qui sont le seul témoin pour d’amples parties des Questions à Marinos. Il tient compte aussi des témoins syriaques. Le travail, qui prend appui sur une bibliographie exhaustive, a pour fin de reconsti-tuer le mieux possible la structure de l’ouvrage d’Eu-sèbe, en assignant sa place à chacun des fragments et en appréciant leur fidélité à l’original, d’approfondir la connaissance de la méthode exégétique d’Eusèbe et de la définir par rapport à ses devanciers, notamment Ori-gène, et à ses successeurs, de préciser aussi comment se situe le texte néotestamentaire des Questions dans les traditions textuelles des évangiles. Ce livre étudie en outre la postérité de l’ouvrage d’Eusèbe en Orient et en Occident, jusqu’au Moyen Âge.

Une interprétation systématique des fragments des Oracles Chaldaïques, dites « La Bible des néoplato-niciens ». La définition devenue classique des Oracles chal-daïques comme « une sorte de bible des derniers néo-platoniciens » embrasse concisément la signi-fication de ce texte médio-platonicien, qui n’a été conservé que sous forme de fragments et n’en est que plus difficile à comprendre. Son langage poétique, re-gorgeant d’images et de métaphores, d’une part, et l’usage créatif qu’en ont fait ses exégèses antiques et principaux témoins, de l’autre, compliquent encore la tâche. Le présent volume offre une synthèse de la tra-dition, de la réception et de l’histoire de la recherche ainsi que l’interprétation de la plupart des fragments et de nombreux témoignages dans le cadre d’une reconstruction systématique des conceptions philo-sophiques proposées dans les Oracles chaldaïques. L’un des principaux thèmes abordés sera celui des idées cosmologiques liées à une hiérarchie des êtres résumée par la formule « âme-homme-salut », cela, à la lumière des informations glanées sur la pratique rituelle théurgique.

Helmut Seng enseigne la philologie classique aux uni-versités de Constance et Francfort-sur-le-Main et a été en 2010 Directeur d’études invité à l’EPHE à Paris.

Dans le présent volume le lecteur prendra connais-sance des contributions présentées à l’occasion d’un colloque international organisé à l’Université catho-lique de Louvain les 12 et 13 juin 2014 par le Centre d’étude des Mondes Antiques en collaboration avec le Centre d’Histoire des Religions Cardinal Julien Ries et les Actions de Recherche Concertées « A World in Crisis? ». Le thème se focalisait sur la corrélation des notions de « culte » et de « crise », dont les accep-tions particulières se trouvent sensiblement modi-fiées et enrichies par leur mise en rapport. Le concept supérieur ainsi formé peut lui-même être mis en re-lation avec l’expression anglo-saxonne « Crisis Cults », originellement un des produits de la recherche ethno-anthropologique américaine des années 1970. Les auteurs ont ainsi été invités à réfléchir sur la diffé-rence qu’ils pourraient éventuellement identifier, en se basant sur leur propre domaine de spécialisation, entre des cultes subissant une crise (ce que repré-sente l’expression française « cultes en crise ») et des cultes issus d’une crise, autrement dit des cultes qui sont une réponse à une situation de crise (ce que tra-duit l’expression anglaise « Crisis cults »). Par son sujet même, ce volume se veut interdiscipli-naire et subséquemment transversal aux thématiques abordées. Dans ces pages en effet on est parvenu à rassembler des intervenants provenant des do-maines de l’archéologie, de la numismatique, de la philologie, de l’histoire et de la philosophie, autant de spécialistes de sujets aussi variés que le monde mi-noen, l’Égypte ancienne, les institutions de la Grèce classique, les civilisations anatoliennes, la philosophie platonicienne, la Rome aussi bien républicaine qu’im-périale et l’époque tardo-antique. Finalement, ce livre, non seulement constitue un avancement de la recherche dans différentes disci-plines, mais ouvre aussi la voie à une étude phéno-ménologique et transversale des notions de « crise » et de « culte » et a ainsi posé quelques jalons en vue d’études ultérieures sur un sujet qui est loin d’être épuisé.

Les écrits de Sénèque, en particulier son traité intitulé "De Beneficiis", sont lus à la lumière des travaux de Marcel Mauss et de ses héri-tiers scientifiques, pour cerner l’épineuse question du statut et de la finalité de la bienfaisance. Doit-elle être pratiquée pour elle-même ou en vue d’une fin parti-culière ? Faut-il privilégier sa portée vertueuse ou sa dimension sociale ? Un examen de l’œuvre stoïcienne au prisme des théories modernes du don révèle une morale en tension et une vision originale de la pra-tique du don, de ses temporalités, de ses effets et de ses acteurs.

Né à Bruxelles en 1986, Martin Degand porte les titres de maître en philologie classique ainsi qu’en sociologie et en anthropologie à l'Université catholique de Lou-vain. Après des séjours de recherche à Sienne, à Toron-to et à Oxford, il obtient son doctorat en 2014.

Cet ouvrage traite de la typologie, de la production, de l’origine et de la diffusion des armes à l'époque romaine tardive et protobyzantine à partir de 1210 occurrences provenant de 156 contextes différents. La présente étude correspond à la publication du doctorat de Damien Glad dans la continuité de ses re-cherches entreprises dés son master sur le thème de l’armement défensif daté de l’époque romaine tardive et protobyzantine. Il ne s’agit pas uniquement d’une étude typologique des armes. Cet ouvrage traite éga-lement de la production, de l’origine et de la diffusion des armes ainsi que de leur ornementation et de leur valeur symbolique. Le cadre géographique est limité par les frontières naturelles de la péninsule balka-nique dont l’importance stratégique ne fait aucun doute. La plupart des armes de ce corpus provienne d’habitats, fortifiés ou non, situés le long du limes danubien de la Serbie à la Dobroudgea (Roumanie). Le corpus est constitué de 1210 occurrences prove-nant de 156 sites différents. Le cadre chronologique s’articule entre deux importantes réorganisations administratives et militaires entre le dernier quart du IIIe siècle et le début du VIIe siècle ap. J.-C. La chute de l’Empire romain suite aux invasions et migrations germaniques, nomades et slaves entraîna de profonds changements politiques, sociaux et militaires. Les armes sont au cœur des cultures humaines comme un objet susceptible à la fois de tuer et d’avoir une forte portée symbolique.

Chercheur associé à l’UMR8167 « Orient et Méditer-ranée » du CNRS, Damien Glad s’intéresse à l’impact des mouvements migratoires dans l’Empire romain. L’auteur a également travaillé à Alésia où il s’est in-téressé à l’archéologie expérimentale et la médiation culturelle. Il enseigna enfin l’archéologie gallo-ro-maine et finalement le Premier Moyen-Âge à l’Ecole du Louvre entre 2008 et 2015.

Cet ouvrage présente une étude du mythe et du culte de Korè-Perséphone en Attique ainsi que de la pré-sence de la divinité dans la magie et l'onirocritique. La présente étude est un remaniement d’une thèse sous la direction de Mr Laurent Pernot soutenue à l’Université de Strasbourg en 2012. La première par-tie examine le mythe de Korè et les étymologies du nom proposées par les Anciens. La deuxième partie porte sur les fêtes et les cultes d’Attique où Korè appa-raît, seule ou aux côtés de Déméter : les Thesmopho-ries, les Mystères d’Éleusis, les Petits Mystères d’Agra, les Skira et les Halôa, les cultes thesmophoriques et éleusiniens locaux, les sanctuaires et les emplace-ments sacrés relatifs à la déesse. La troisième partie est consacrée à la place de la déesse dans la magie, dans les associations religieuses dionysiaques ou or-phiques (collège des Iobacchoi), et au manuel d’oniro-critique d’Artémidore. La quatrième partie contient le corpus des textes cités au cours du travail : les sources littéraires, les documents épigraphiques et papyrolo-giques. Un appendice est consacré à l’image de Ko-rè-Perséphone dans l’œuvre de Porphyre.

Alexandra Dimou est docteur de l’Université de Stras-bourg. Elle a préparé un D.E.A. à l’École des Hautes études en Sciences Sociales à Paris, sous la direction de Pierre Vidal-Naquet. Elle est enseignante mise à la disposition de l’Université de Strasbourg.

Les textes d’offrande du collier-menit inscrits sur les parois des temples se réfèrent à deux grands récits mythologiques : celui du mythe de la Lointaine où le roi apaise la déesse dangereuse à son retour de Nubie au moyen de cette parure parfois associée aux sistres, et également celui d’Horus et Seth où le roi, tel Horus, présente à la déesse un collier prenant alors la valeur des attributs du dieu Seth.L'étude de l'iconographie du collier, des couronnes portées par les divinités et par le roi, la traduction de l'ensemble des textes relatifs à cette offrande et leur analyse, qu'elle soit grammaticale, religieuse ou épi-graphique, ont révélé le rôle fondamental que jouait ce collier-menit : lorsqu'il est présenté tel un objet sacré de la déesse Hathor, c'est la divinité qu'il in-carne en étant le reflet de sa beauté, de sa brillance ; lorsqu'il symbolise les testicules du dieu Seth, il est un moyen pour le roi de légitimer son pouvoir royal sur le trône du Double Pays.Enfin l'auteure s'est efforcée de prendre en considé-ration la composition du programme décoratif dans lequel cette offrande du collier-menit s'intègre et de suggérer les corrélations entre différentes scènes afin d’affiner la compréhension, autant que faire se peut, de l’offrande de cet objet à multiples facettes.

Après de nombreuses années d'étude de l'égyptien classique et du néo-égyptien, Catherine Châtelet s'est plus particulièrement spécialisée dans l'analyse des temples d'époque ptolémaïque et romain. Elle a consacré un mémoire de l'École Pratique des Hautes Études à l'étude détaillée du rite d'offrande du col-lier-menit dans les temples de cette époque.

One of the most important books in the history of medieval philosophy, the "Book of causes" was com-posed in Bagdad in the 9th century mainly from the Arabic translations of Proclus' "Elements of Theol-ogy". It was translated from Arabic into Latin (in the 12th century) and from Latin into Armenian (in the 17th century). The exceptional discovery of over 65 unpub-lished commentaries (mainly in Latin) on the "Book of causes" and the "Elements of Theology", prove, for the first time, that the two texts where widely dis-seminated and commented throughout many of the European universities (Paris, Oxford, Erfurt, Krakow, Prague). This volume provides partial or complete editions of the newly-discovered commentaries, and yields, through historical and philosophical analy-ses, new and essential insights into the influence of Greek-Arabic Neoplatonism in the Latin and Armenian philosophical traditions until the 17th century.

Depuis vingt ans une mission franco-bangladaise plu-ridisciplinaire explore le site archéologique de Mahas-thangarh au Bangladesh, l’antique Pundranagara des sources sanskrites; un premier rapport en a été publié chez le présent éditeur en 2007. La poursuite des re-cherches a livré de nombreuses et riches informations sur ce poste avancé créé par l’empire Maurya sur sa frontière orientale (IVe-IIIe s. av. n.è.), devenu une ville ‘capitale’ au cours des siècles suivants, en particulier aux VIIIe-XIe siècles, lors des dynasties Pala et Sena. Im-portant centre politique et religieux où cohabitaient trois religions indiennes, la cité fut aussi un lieu de croisement de grands circuits régionaux, Nord-Sud entre les régions de l’Assam et du Népal vers la baie du Bengale, Ouest vers la vallée du Gange mais aussi une étape des chemins venant de la Chine du sud-ouest (Sichuan, Yunnan). La prospérité de la ville a cessé vers le XIIIe siècle lorsque le Bengale est passé sous la domination des musulmans du Sultanat de Delhi, mais aussi, sans doute, suite à un important tremblement de terre à cette même époque.Le volume présente les collections de matériels dé-couverts lors de fouilles 1993-1999, dont l’analyse ar-chéologique a été présentée dans le premier volume. Outre quelques fragments de sculptures de belle fac-ture — d’autres plus nombreuses ont été recueillies au cours des fouilles 2001-2011—, on soulignera la richesse et la diversité des productions de figurines en terre cuite, créations artistiques tout à fait com-parables à leurs équivalentes du Bengale occidental et manifestations d’une religiosité affirmée; la reprise de deux articles publiés en Inde confirme l’intérêt du site et de sa région. Les contributions du volume se sont également attachées à décrire divers aspects de la vie quotidienne des habitants de la ville au cours des siècles: céramique, outillage lithique, nombreux objets en terre cuite, etc. L’étude archéométrique des perles publiées dans le premier volume apporte de nouvelles données sur cet artisanat de Mahasthan dans le cadre plus vaste de la même ‘industrie’ dans l’Océan Indien. Les informations fournies par toutes ces études —ainsi que deux rapports de fouille et une analyse méthodologique approfondie (calibration des dates radiocarboniques et archéomagnétisme)— ouvrent des perspectives tout à fait nouvelles sur l’histoire de la cité et sur le rôle qu’elle a pu jouer au Nord-Bengale dont elle fut le centre, mais aussi sur sa place dans le Bengale antique. Un certain nombre d’interprétations acquises sont en cours de correction, et une nouvelle vision de l’évolution de la ville et de sa région est en train de se dessiner: la préparation d’un troisième vo-lume sur les fouilles 2001-2011 en fournira les princi-paux arguments et résultats.

In 1922 the world came face to face with a young pharaoh: in that year the tomb of Tutankhamun was discovered and his breathtaking gold mask became known to everybody. Ancient Egyptian gold is known to all of us. But what was the significance of gold in Ancient Egyptian society? Where was it found and how was it won? And where did the Ancient Egyptian goldsmith work and what techniques did he master?

The first part of this book answers the questions mentioned above. The second part is a catalogue of gold objects which are part of the renowned and out-standing collection of the Egyptian Department of the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden. By means of a technical examination of these objects, this book gives a unique and innovatory insight in the work of the ancient Egyptian goldsmith, who was able to ac-complish true work of art though working in hot and basic circumstances.

Mariëlle Bulsink studied archaeology and Egyptology at Leiden University. In 1992 she finished her studies, writing a thesis on the technical research of the gold objects in the collection of the Egyptian Department of the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden.

This first volume of the Kültepe International Meet-ings gathers interdisciplinary studies dedicated to Kültepe, ancient Kaneš (central Anatolia), and its environment, mainly during the Bronze Age. This book is the first of a new series dedicated to the site of Kültepe, ancient Kaneš, in central Anatolia. It is the report of a conference which took place at Külte-pe on September 2013. Contributions written by the best specialists of the field focus on Kültepe and its environment, mainly during the Bronze Age, and on its Assyrian settlement located in the lower town. The volume brings about a reflection on archaeological and textual materials, and provides an interdisciplin-ary summary of the state of research. It is divided into six sections dedicated to the following topics: archae-ology, chronology and population of Kültepe; archives unearthed in the houses belonging to Assyrians; Old Assyrian writing and literacy; Anatolian settlements and daily life; metals and minerals; Kültepe after the Middle Bronze Age.

Fikri Kulakoğlu, Professor of archaeology at Ankara University, is the director of Kültepe excavations since 2006.

Cécile Michel, Director of Research at the National Center for Scientific Research (France), belongs, since the 90s, to the international team in charge of the pu-blication of Kültepe tablets.

The European Yearbook of the History of Psychol-ogy. Sources, Theories, and Models (EYHP) is a peer-reviewed international Journal devoted to the history of psychology, and especially to the interconnections between historiographic survey and problems of epistemology.

With an eye on the interdisciplinary nature of cul-tural studies, the Yearbook pays special attention to those common areas between psychological research and its adjacent disciplines, in particu-lar the human and the life sciences (philosophy, sociology, anthropology, psychiatry, physiology, neurology, biology, zoology, etc.).

Aimed primarily at historians and philosophers of psychology, epistemologists, historians of philoso-phy, and historians of human sciences, the Year-book is also open to contributions from all areas of psychology that address a phenomenon or topic of interest in psychology from a historical perspec-tive and/or with an epistemological approach. This three-volume catalogue presents five manu-scripts containing some 780 mainly botanical draw-ings, now in the library of the Institut de France. They were produced for Federico Cesi in the 1620s to fur-ther the researches of the scientific society he had founded in Rome, the Accademia dei Lincei, of which Cassiano dal Pozzo was a member. The manuscripts were acquired by Cassiano in 1633 following Cesi’s death, together with three companion manuscripts dedicated to drawings of fungi (published in Part B.II of the catalogue raisonné). Many of the drawings depict plants such as ferns, bryophytes, mosses and liverworts, which had been considered ‘imperfect’ because (like fungi) they seemed to lack reproductive structures – flowers, fruit or seeds. In 1624 Galileo gave his fellow academicians a microscope, and with this novel ‘aid to the eyes’, wrote another Linceo, ‘our Prince Cesi saw to it that many plants hitherto be-lieved by botanists to be lacking in seeds were drawn on paper’. Indeed, these drawings constitute some of the earliest microscopic studies in the history of sci-ence. One manuscript is dedicated to illustrations of seaweeds and is the first known sustained study of this subject, while another is a miscellaneous volume that includes 30 prints as well as drawings of fungi and lichen, insects, a bat, a hermaphrodite rat and other curiosities. Introductory essays discuss the impor-tance of these drawings to Cesi’s researches and how the manuscripts made their way into the collections of the Institut de France, their botanical content and place in the history of botanical illustration. All draw-ings are reproduced as full-plate colour illustrations and accompanied by botanical identifications and commentary.

Cesi’s artists, in the 1620s, recorded details of plant anatomy with a precision, and on a scale, that would not be matched for centuries. Engravings were made of a few of the drawings; if the entire series had been published at the time, how the science of botany would have been advanced."
