1.What does the name Buffalo Bill suggest about him?

2.What kinds of things do you think you would see in a Wild West show?

2 Buffalo Bill

Buffalo Bill was a scout and a bison hunter. He was an

expert marksman and a colorful showman. His charismatic

personality charmed crowds in both the United States and

Europe. American presidents consulted him on situations

involving the Western frontier. He was an advocate for

women's suffrage. He campaigned for fair treatment of

Native Americans. By the beginning of the twentieth

century, Buffalo Bill had become an iconic symbol of the

American West.

William Frederick Cody was born in the Iowa Territory on

February 26, 1846. As a young boy, he helped care for

livestock on a wagon train. As a teenager, he rode for the

Pony Express. During the Civil War, he volunteered as a

scout for the Union. He also was a teamster. After the war,

he worked for a railroad company. His job was to supply

meat for construction workers. Cody's expertise with his

rifle earned him the name Buffalo Bill. He was employed as

a civilian scout during the Indian Wars. He also was a guide

for buffalo hunters.

4 Buffalo Bill

Buffalo Bill became a popular character in dime novels.

The small paperback books romanticized heroes and villains

of the frontier. One writer convinced Cody to act. He

played himself on stage. The performance sparked his

interest in show business. He performed in theaters for more

than ten years. In 1883, he organized an outdoor show in

North Platte, Nebraska. The success of the show prompted

Cody to create Buffalo Bill's Wild West. The attraction was

a circus-like pageant. It celebrated life in the American

West.

Cody's show consisted of a series of reenactments of frontier

events. Pony Express riders galloped at breakneck speeds.

Masked men held up stagecoaches. Indians attacked wagon

trains. The show included dramatic displays of rope tricks

and bulldogging. Incredible feats of marksmanship dazzled

crowds. Sharpshooters Annie Oakley and her husband,

Frank Butler, were two of the headline performers. Cody

recruited Native Americans to add authenticity to his show.

Chief Sitting Bull toured with the show for a short time.

6 Buffalo Bill

Cody's traveling show played to crowds throughout the U.S.

In 1887, he took the show to Europe. England's Queen

Victoria attended a performance. Cody took his show to

Europe eight times. Europeans referred to Cody as "Nature's

Nobleman." He was a frontiersman with the manners of a

gentleman. Cody was passionate about the West. He used

his success to promote economic growth in the West. He

invested in a number of projects. These included mining,

ranching, breeding stock, and publishing.

In 1895, Cody helped to found the town of Cody in northwestern

Wyoming. Two years later he established his own newspaper. It's

still in operation today. Cody had a cattle ranch about 35 miles

outside of the town. He operated a dude ranch. Tourists went on

packhorse camping trips. Hunters came to shoot big game. Cody

died on January 10, 1917. A museum in the town of Cody honors

the traditions of frontier life that were so important to Cody himself.

Wild Bill HickokAnswer the following questions BEFORE you read this book.Write what you know. If you want to guess, you can. You will NOTbe marked wrong!

1.What characteristics do you think a man who goes by the name of "Wild Bill" might have?

2.What are some things that a person might do to be called a legend in the Old West?

2 Wild Bill Hickok

James Butler Hickok was born on a farm in northern Illinois

on May 27, 1837. He was said to be an expert marksman at

an early age. When he was 18 years old, he headed west.

He worked on a farm. He was also employed as a

stagecoach driver. Hickok joined a vigilante group in

Kansas. During the Civil War, he served as a teamster and a

scout. He also was said to be a spy for the Union.

According to one story, it was during the war that he began

to call himself Wild Bill.

I did page 21

3

Hickok's legendary status began with a confrontation with a

bear. According to the story, Hickok was driving a freight

team. A bear and two cubs blocked the road. He fired a

shot but didn't kill the bear. The bear attacked Hickok and

severely injured him. Hickok worked as a stable hand at a

Pony Express and stagecoach station while he recovered.

He was involved in a shootout with men threatening the

station manager. Details of the shootout vary. Several years

after the incident, one magazine story claimed that Hickok

had killed ten men.

4 Wild Bill Hickok

The legend surrounding Hickok continued to grow with all

kinds of stories circulating about his fighting ability. One

story said that he shot six bullets into the center of a letter

"O" from 50 yards away. In another story, Hickok was said

to have shot a man in the heart from 75 yards away. The

man had challenged him to a duel. Hickok's prior encounter

with the bear grew into a story of his tracking and killing a

bear with a Bowie knife and his bare hands. As the stories

multiplied, it became difficult to separate fact from fiction.

I did page 22

5

Hickok did achieve notable status as a lawman. He helped

bring order to the Western frontier. After the Civil War,

Hickok moved to Kansas. He was appointed the sheriff of

Hays City. He later became the marshal of Abilene. Both

towns had reputations for being lawless. Hickok ruled with

an iron hand. His frontier justice tactics were questionable

at times. Hickok fought his last gun battle in 1871. In a

shootout he accidentally killed one of his deputies. He was

relieved of his duties as a lawman.

6 Wild Bill Hickok

In 1873, Hickok appeared on stage in a play called Scouts of

the Plains. The play starred William Cody, better known as

Buffalo Bill. Cody had met Hickok years before when he

had first headed west. Buffalo Bill and Hickok executed

various frontiersman skills on stage. They demonstrated

their marksmanship by shooting a variety of targets. In 1876,

Hickok was diagnosed with glaucoma. His marksmanship

skills declined. He began traveling from town to town as a

gambler.

I did page 23

7

Hickok traveled to the Dakota Territory during the gold rush. He

hoped to strike it rich, but his prospecting efforts weren't successful.

He settled in the town of Deadwood, where he became a regular

poker player. On the afternoon of August 2, 1876, Hickok was

sitting at a table with his back to the door. A young man walked in

and shot Hickok in the back of the head. The legend surrounding

Hickok continued to grow. At the time of his death, the cards in his

hand contained a pair of black aces and a pair of black eights. The

hand became known as the "dead man's hand."
