The new Renault ESPACE Multi-Sense driving enjoyment and travelling comfort

You are no doubt already familiar with the crossover styling, quality and reinvented modular inte- rior of the new Renault Espace. Today, we invite you to discover the sensations it offers behind the wheel, not to mention its outstanding travelling comfort…

This immersive, à la carte experience is managed by the new Renault Multi-Sense system which controls the car’s array of technologies. The settings of the engine, transmission, chassis, comfort and ambience (lighting, instrument display, massaging seats) are all carefully coordi- nated to match the driver’s mood. Five distinct modes serve to give the impression that several vehicles have been combined into one Espace.

At the heart of the Multi-Sense system lies the 4Control chassis (four-wheel steering) which has been mated for the first time been mated with electronic damper control to deliver nimble performance and reassuring enjoyment. The feeling of safety is further enhanced by a compre- hensive raft of driver aids.

01 Sensuous styling for an enhanced travelling experience

The new Renault Espace is a generously-proportioned crossover that packs quality technology and equipment and inspires unprecedented emotions. It’s an invitation to all occupants to take full advantage of the journey. Laurens van den Acker - Renault Senior Vice-President of Corporate Design

The new Espace experience begins with its look, both inside and out. Every detail contributes to the pleasure of the senses and the promise of quality travelling comfort. At Renault, we design cars that enable our customers to live their lives to the full and take advantage of every moment. The new Espace cultivates the brand’s genes in this respect and does justice to the attributes traditionally associated with its predecessors, i.e. comfort, light and space. Finally, our cars and the services we offer are tailored to take the strain out of everyday life. That is why the new Espace has reconsidered the modularity of its five- and seven-seat arrangements and added to the benefits of the R-Link 2 connected in-car tablet which comes with an 8.7-inch vertically mounted display.

An aesthetically pleasing experience

The new Espace is unique in that it does not fall into any limited automotive genre. At the same time, though, it draws upon the very best elements of each one. The new Renault Espace features the proportions, poise and fluid, robust lines of a large crossover.

Status-enhancing, but without excess, Renault’s new crossover boasts a pleasing blend of:

Dynamism, expressed by the vehicle’s front end and broad shoulders,

Character, through its large wheels (from 17- to 20-inches) and pronounced wheel arches,

And a welcoming ambience, provided by its interior layout, four-part Lumière panoramic windscreen and brightly lit cabin.

A crossover through its generous proportions

The size of the new Espace (length: 4.86m / width: 1.89m / height: 1.68m) provides an immediate indication of its generous character. Yet it also features the muscular forms of an SUV, with the lower half of its body exuding dynamism and strength thanks to pronounced wheel arches and an assertive grille. By contrast, the upper part of the body adopts lighter, more fluid lines, as evidenced by the chrome border that outlines the side windows.

A low roof line adds to the new Espace’s sleek good looks and offsets ground clearance that has increased slightly to 16cm (4cm more than its predecessor). The 2.88m wheelbase (16mm longer than the current Grand Espace) emphasises the impression of dynamism while at the same time contributing to cabin space.

Refined body colours

The new Espace is available in a choice of nine sophisticated colours that truly show off its lines:

Eight metallic options: Cassiopée Grey, Platine Grey, Dune Beige, Céleste Blue, Glacé Brown, Etoilé Black, Pearlescent White and Améthyste Black, the latter reserved for the Initiale Paris version.

One non-metallic finish: Glacier White.

Bathed in light, day and night

The Lumière panoramic windscreen – a three-part windscreen that is extended by a fixed glass roof over the front seats – stands out for its exceptionally large surface area of 2.8 square metres. This means that occupants can take advantage of unrivalled visibility and views of the passing world. The new Espace can also be specified with an electrically-opening panoramic roof. At night, the new Es- pace provides colourful, vibrant and customisable ambient lighting courtesy of several light sources inside the cabin, particularly around the centre console and B-pillars.

A new, high-tech lighting signature and full LED lights

The new Espace introduces Renault’s new daytime lighting signature, which takes the form of an asymmetrical letter ‘C’ in the middle of each headlight, a bold identity that will be rolled out across the brand’s future models. In adopting as standard Full LED (Light Emitting Diode) technology, the new Espace breaks fresh ground for Renault. The head light units incorporate two compact LED Pure Vision modules that fulfil the functions of dipped and main beams. Their ray emits a light that is close to that of the sun: 20% more powerful than a halogen beam, it upgrades night-time vision. At the rear, the new Espace benefits from generously-dimensioned tail lights. Their chiselled light guides provide Renault’s large crossover with a strong and assertive rear lighting signature.

An attractively pleasing gear lever that is a pleasure to use

The gear lever of the EDC (Efficient Dual Clutch) transmission is symbolic of the styling philosophy that prevailed during the design of the new Espace. It artfully combines original, sensuous forms with swift, precise gear changes. By virtue of its dynamic design and satisfying touch, it plays a direct role in delivering driving enjoyment, while the electronic shift by wire system – which does away with the need for a cable – is smooth and effortless to use.

Aeronautical and high-tech inspiration

The new Espace’s design and travelling comfort point to the new car’s aeronautical and high-tech inspiration. The C-pillar is shaped after an aircraft tail, while the centre console appears to float between the driver and front passenger and the stylish gear lever resembles an aviation-style control. The dashboard design was inspired by the wing section of an aeroplane. The light guides around the centre console and B-pillars in the cabin, the head-up display and R-Link 2 screen would not be out-of-place in the cockpit of an aeroplane. Meanwhile, occupant well-being is not unlike the exclusive experience of travelling in a private jet. Finally, the overriding principles that guided the new Espace’s design are the same as those employed in the world of aviation: carefully-honed aerodynamics, low weight, quality, reliability, ergonomics and comfort.

Taking advantage of every moment on-board

The reinvention of the Espace has been accompanied by a perceptible upmarket shift across the board, with a particular focus on innovation. In this way, the new Espace provides a real answer to the shifting expectations and needs of Renault’s high-end clientele.

Welcoming, from the very first contact with the car

The new Renault Espace welcomes the driver and passengers alike.

Approaching the vehicle (as it detects the key card): The Daytime Running Lights and rear lights come on, as does the interior light, while the door mirrors deploy, the ambient lighting bursts into life and the indicators signal that the car is open...

Upon entering the vehicle: The instrument panel lights up, the R-Link screen displays a welcome message ac- companied by a sound sequence, while a mini lightshow brings to life the buttons on the centre console and Multi-Sense system (a fast sequence in Sport mode and a gentle pattern in Comfort mode).

The wide door apertures and position of the seats ensure easy entry. There is no need for occupants to stretch or bend down to comfortably settle into the cabin.

Business class seats and driving position

The front seats are enveloping, with larger head rests contributing to the sensation of overall comfort. The top of the seat-backs adapts to the build of each occu- pant. The high-up driving position ensures perfect comfort on long journeys. The seat height, angle of the seat back and cushion and degree of lumbar support are all electronically adjustable thanks to three buttons located on the side of the seat or via the R-Link 2 screen, which can memorise up to six personal settings. Fore-aft travel is a generous 24cm, while the length of the cushion itself can be adjusted by up to six centimetres. In the case of the Initiale Paris version, ‘10-way’ adjustment (eight electrically-powered adjustments) provides the driver and front passenger with the ultimate freedom to find the ideal seating position.

In the rear, three identical individual seats welcome second row occupants, while the third row is capable of accommodating two additional passengers. The retrac- table rear seats fold down into the floor and can be removed altogether if necessary, revealing an entirely flat load space that boasts a carrying capacity of 2,101dm3 (in five-seater configuration) or 2,035 dm3 (seven seats).

One-Touch folding: the magic touch that makes the seats disappear

Renault’s new crossover has reinvented interior modularity. The individual seats in the two back rows can disappear completely into the floor. In this area too, the power is in the driver’s hands: thanks to the One-Touch function, the seats can be folded away on demand – either individually or all together – with just a single click, regardless of the position of the head rests.

This effortless process is extremely simple to control:

From the driver’s seat, by visualising and selecting the seat(s) to be folded by tapping on the touch screen display of the R-Link 2 connected tablet,

From the luggage compartment, by pressing the button(s) associated with each seat on the control unit located on the left-hand side of the boot,

Manually, by pulling on the lever located on the side of each seat.

The act of folding away all the seats simultaneously is operated by a smooth mechanism which sees them disappear one after the other, like tipping dominoes. After being electronically unlocked, the seats fold away by means of an ingenious mechanical spring action, aided by gravity.

Initiale Paris,

The very best of in-car comfort and occupant well-being - Renault-style

Occupant well-being is a priority across the Initiale Paris range. It expresses itself through the colours, materials and equipment that have been selected for the vital part they play in ensuring a premium level of comfort and quality. All of this comes presented in a lounge-like environment which is a natural fit for the new Espace. Philippe Brunet – D/E Product Range Programme Vice President, Renault

The new Espace Initiale Paris: the crowning glory of the Renault range

When it comes to high-end travelling comfort, the Initiale Paris version of the new Espace represents the ultimate Espace and the ultimate Renault with regard to occupant well- being. Thanks to its lavish equipment level, the new Espace Initiale Paris will be sure to stand out on the road with its exclusive Améthyste Black paint finish – complete with deep plum metallic reflections – and a modern interior that can be specified in one of two trims: a graded Lune Grey / Dark Brown or simply Dark Brown finish.

Exclusive exterior design features

An exclusive new metallic Améthyste Black finish, in addition to the standard colour range, Specific 19-inch wheels, Specific exterior branding at the front – beneath the Renault logo – and at the rear in place of the ‘Espace’ badge.

Special attention paid to the interior and travelling comfort

Full-grain Nappa leather upholstery available in either Dark Brown or graded Lune Grey / Dark Brown, Exclusively tanned and crafted Nappa leather-trimmed steering wheel, door panel inserts and armrests, Dashboard with visible stitching, Heated, massaging front seats with 10-way adjustment (eight electric motor adjustments), Optional heated second row seats, Relax head rests for first and second row seats, Extra-tinted laminated side windows for improved acoustic comfort, complete with sun blinds for second row occupants, Initiale Paris badging on the door sills, steering wheel insert, top of the front seat backs (embossed) and decorative trim at the back of the front head rests.

 Initiale Paris: a full-grain finish

Leather is at the heart of the Initiale Paris trim. A fine and natural material par excellence, Renault has selected full-grain Nappa leather, which is of the very highest visual and tactile quality. During the course of its tanning, the Initiale Paris leather does not go through the calendaring stage (rollers that print the grain). Instead, it goes through a milling stage (a type of large drum), which brings out the natural grain. This ensures that the leather remains smooth and supple. This dedication to high-quality craftsmanship is reflected by painstaking attention-to-detail that calls for the most delicate tasks to be carried out by hand. This is the case with the top-stitching and sewing of the seats’ leather trim - known as graining - which is performed manually by

BOSE®: tailor-engineered surround sound for the new Espace

The new Renault Espace takes a major step forward in the realm of audio realism. Bose’s Surround Sound experience makes a direct contribution to the overall immersive experience on offer on-board the new Espace. In order to produce this emotion, engineers from Bose and Renault worked closely with one another from the very beginning of the vehicle’s development. Together, they created an audio system that is specifically adapted to the acoustic properties and identity of the new Espace..

 The Bose® system in detail

Surround Sound: an immersive experience. The driver and passengers are enveloped by a rich and well-balanced sound, wherever in the vehicle they happen to be sitting.

Twelve high-performance loudspeakers, including a subwoofer, generating expansive and enveloping sound quality worthy of a live performance.

Centerpoint® 2 Technology: Bose’s exclusive algorithm converts the signal from stereo sources into a multi-channel signal to create Surround Sound.

Bose® digital signal processor: bespoke equalisation, taking into account the new Espace’s acoustic profile so as to flawlessly transmit every nuance of the music.

The BOSE® difference: when engineers are also musicians

Antoine MARMOUX is a systems engineer at Bose Automotive Systems. He is part of the team that designed the BOSE® audio system for the new Renault Espace. Like many of his colleagues, he is also a musician. In addition to being a committed engineer, he’s a dedicated drummer. He explains his work…

How did you create and develop the BOSE® audio system for the new Espace?

The development of the audio system for the Renault Espace required more than a thousand measurements. This was necessary in order to create the cabin’s acoustic profile with pinpoint precision. However, the technical side counts for nothing without a human touch. This is what brings musical experiences alive and plays a vital role when it comes to listening to and evaluating in-car acoustic quality. Designing a Bose product calls for technique and musical sensitivity. Not only are my colleagues at Bose first class engineers, but they are above all musicians at heart. Like them, I am passionate about playing music in my spare time: I am a drummer, and I compose my own pieces. As a musician, I have a finely-tuned and demanding ear that is particularly sensitive to small details. It is essential that all the frequencies that make up the music are faithfully reproduced. This was one of the requirements of the audio system for the new Renault Espace and, when I listen to it, I believe the final result is a genuine success.

As both an engineer and musician, what can you tell us about the new Espace’s BOSE® audio system?

The Bose audio system in the new Espace is unique. It is tailor engineered to match the cabin’s acoustic profile. What is most striking when you listen to this system is that it is truly at home in the new Espace. The acoustic quality exudes a genuine impression of space – just like the vehicle itself. Where traditional or conventional stereo systems transmit the sensation that the sound is coming from the front of the vehicle, the Bose® Surround Sound system in the new Espace puts occupants right at the centre of a panoramic soundstage. Being a drummer, I attach a great deal of importance to being able to feel the beat of the drums when listening to a piece of music. In the new Renault Espace, the charleston and snare drum are reproduced with the utmost clarity and sound completely authentic and natural. The same can be said for the bass drum, whose low notes are restored in all their dynamic glory. Courtesy of Surround Sound, other instruments similarly sound as if each one of them is emanating from a precise spot on the stage. The sensation is so strong that you feel enveloped by the music, regardless of whether you are sat on the left, on the right, in the front or in the back of the new Espace. You truly feel like you are listening in a concert hall.

02 With multi-sense, driving enjoyment takes on a whole new dimension

When on the move, the new Renault Espace stands out through its customisable travelling comfort and ambience. The Multi-Sense system co-ordinates the in-car technologies and adapts the vehicle’s temperament to the desires of the driver and passengers. The new Espace boasts unique handling qualities thanks to the combination of its 4Control chassis (four-wheel steering) and electronic damper control. Courtesy of its optimised aerodynamics, a 250kg reduction in overall weight and a range of latest-generation, downsized engines mated to EDC automatic transmission, Renault is taking the lead in combining driving enjoyment with efficiency.

Multi-Sense, in charge of the technologies dedicated to driving enjoyment and travelling comfort

What are the benefits of the multi-sense system?

Multi-Sense is an unprecedented tool that both controls and co-ordinates the various technologies that can be found in the new Espace, thereby generating a uniquely enjoyable driving experience. It is responsible for operating the 4Control system (four-wheel steering), the electronic damper control, the steering, the engine and the EDC transmission, as well as the dashboard instruments, engine sound and cabin lighting.

Just like an orchestra conductor, the Multi-Sense system adapts all of the techno- logies inside the new Espace to match the desires of its driver. Whether they are in the mood for a sporty drive, a calm and relaxing experience or simply efficiency, the new Renault Espace adapts accordingly, and is capable of changing its mood with just a single click.

With Multi-Sense, Renault is the first volume car manufacturer to offer a system that comprehensively and intuitively co-ordinates so many technologies.

Immersive, customisable enjoyment

Courtesy of the new Renault Multi-Sense system, the new Espace provides occupants with a range of travelling experiences thanks to four pre-programmed settings (Eco, Comfort, Neutral and Sport) plus the fully configurable Perso mode.

Each setting creates and co-ordinates a specific driving mood by adjusting:

- Engine response,

- The EDC transmission’s gear shift settings,

- The degree of effort required to turn the steering wheel,

- The configuration of the 4Control system,

- The active damping settings.

At the same time, the in-car ambience is adapted to suit the mood by modifying:

- The colour of the ambient lighting: green, blue, sepia, red or violet,

- The presentation and colour of the information displayed by the instruments,

- The engine sound,

- The driver’s massaging seat settings (Comfort mode),

- The functioning of the climate control system in Eco mode.

These modes and the different settings are operated by the R-Link 2 system. The carefully-designed and clearly-presented menus offer intuitive access to all the benefits of Renault’s Multi-Sense system.

« SEVERAL ESPACES ROLLED INTO ONE…»

During the course of the same day, a driver might need to use his or her car in a variety of different conditions with different demands. Thanks to Multi- Sense, the new Espace adapts to this diversity of life and journeys to ensure that every moment is unique. If the day should begin with a family trip along a motorway, the Comfort mode would be the most appropriate choice for all the occupants, endowing the new Espace with the stability, comfort and reassuring performance of a limousine. The active damping, mated to the 4Control system, irons out bumps in the road. Calibrated for motorway use, the steering adds to the impression of safety. A relaxing sound and light environment puts everybody in a good mood. The time may then come for a solo adventure on undulating country roads. In Sport mode, the new Espace offers peerless handling response. The engine, transmission, suspension and steering work in unison to generate intense driving sensations. The 4Control chassis significantly enhances precision and agility. The in-car ambience similarly adapts itself to the driver’s desires: the ambient lighting takes on a red hue, while the engine note adopts a sportier tone courtesy of the BOSE® Surround Sound audio system. Finally, the Eco mode caters to the requirements of a more economical and environmentally-friendly drive. The instruments play their role in optimising energy and fuel consumption

From the very first tests of the Multi-Sense system, I was able to note the physical and even bodily effects that it had on drivers and occupants. For example, in Comfort mode, the driver’s arms sit naturally lower. The driving position is more relaxed and the whole body relaxes accordingly. Speed is reduced. In Sport mode, by contrast, the arms are raised and the chest moves closer to the steering wheel. Every movement and turn is more precise. In each case, I saw in the smiles and spontaneous expressions of surprise the earliest endorsements and encouragement for our work on Multi-Sense. A first: the 4Control system combined with electronic damping

In mating the 4Control system to the electronic damper control, Renault efficiently co-ordinates the actions of two components that play an absolutely vital role in a car’s handling characteristics: the steering and suspension. Working in tandem with the 4Control system, electronic damper control ensures supreme road holding and ride comfort during sudden or significant changes of direction. On twisty roads, it is possible to turn the steering wheel a little further without detracting from the car’s balanced stability and agility. It is the Multi-Sense system that co-ordinates the interaction of the 4Control system, the electronic damper control and all of the technologies dedicated to the enjoyment of both the driver and occupants.

The nimbleness of a small city car and the ease of a limousine thanks to 4Control

The 4Control system is permanently active in the new Espace. At speeds of less than 50kph in Comfort mode (60kph in Neutral mode, 70kph in Sport mode), the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction to those at the front, up to a maximum angle of 3.5 degrees. It feels as though the wheelbase is shorter in order to favour manoeuvrability. Above these speed thresholds, the rear wheels turn in the same direction as those at the front. This effect is comparable to extending the wheelbase, the benefit being enhanced driving pleasure, stability and an impression of safety.

Renault invented the 4Control chassis in 2007

Back in 2007, Renault broke new ground in the automotive world by introducing the innovative 4Control system (four-wheel steering) for the Laguna III. The 4Control system – the undisputed benchmark in this segment of the market in terms of driving safety and efficiency – guarantees flawless road holding at higher speed and unrivalled manoeuvrability at low speed. Every sensation is heightened, thanks to the extreme precision of the steering and stability along twisty roads. In built-up areas, the rear wheels actually steer to provide extra manoeuvrability. In emergency situations, the four-wheel steering ensures excellent road holding. Equipped with the 4Control system, the car is quite simply nimbler and faster on tight, twisty roads than many sports coupés, enabling Renault to demonstrate that driving enjoyment is not the exclusive preserve of high-end sports cars.

Active damping that analyses the conditions 100 times every second

While the 4Control system has a direct influence on the car’s lateral dynamics, the electronic dampers control vertical movements. The system affects the feel of the ride (firm or soft). The active damping tool constantly adapts the reaction of the shock absorbers to both the ever-changing conditions of the road and the actions of the driver, from movements on the steering wheel to lane changes, acceleration and braking. Thanks to the presence of a solenoid valve in each damper, the new Espace continuously assesses the conditions and adjusts the vehicle’s handling up to 100 times every second.

The ingenuity of the new Espace’s electronic damper control management resides in its integration with the vehicle’s electrical system (CAN, Contoller Ara Network). Information on the vehicle’s dynamics is collected by sensors shared with the ESC (Electronic Stability Control): speed of rotation of the wheels, steering wheel angle, longitudinal and lateral acceleration, pressure applied to the brakes, engine torque and ride height. This exclusive Renault-patented architecture provides the Multi- Sense system with constant access to the full potential of the vehicle’s chassis.

« As easy to drive as a Clio around town »

Courtesy of the 4Control system, the size of the new Espace is quickly forgotten. Less angle and effort is required on the steering wheel to carry out manoeuvres such as tackling a roundabout, turning at a junction or performing a U-turn. Turning the steering wheel through just a third of its rotation is sufficient to successfully navigate a roundabout, while turning the wheel through a full rotation enables the driver to turn onto a perpendicular road at a crossroads (without 4Control, the wheel would need to be turned 30 degrees further). Equipped with 4Control, the new Espace is able to execute a three-point turn in just 11.1m – a turning circle not much bigger than that of the Clio (10.8m). In built-up areas, the new Renault Espace is capable of parking almost entirely by itself, thanks to its Easy Park Assist system. The new Espace identifies the parking spot, measures the available space and assumes control of the steering during parallel, diagonal and perpendicular parking manoeuvres. This driver aid is made even more useful by also navigating the car back out of the parking spot

Powerful, reliable and efficient engines

As an expert engine manufacturer and a pioneer of turbocharging and downsizing in Formula 1, Renault has elected to equip its range’s flagship model with small capacity engines mated to the EDC (Efficient Dual Clutch) dual-clutch automatic transmission. The new Renault Espace is powered by a choice between three high- tech powerplants that blend driving enjoyment with efficiency. All three benefit from the engine manufacturing expertise demonstrated by Renault in motorsport.

Flexible and responsive

The Energy dCi 160 EDC Twin Turbo: 160hp and 380Nm torque available from 1,750rpm

This diesel engine benefits from Renault’s Twin-Turbo technology. The low inertia turbo enables crisp pull-away and immediate response at low revs. With 265Nm torque available from 1,250rpm (60Nm more than the unit it replaces), the low-end torque is comparable to that of a two-litre engine. The second turbo delivers brisk acceleration at higher revs, offering punch and dynamic pick-up across a broad range. This engine is mated to EDC six-speed automatic transmission which is praised by Renault customers for its performance and suitability for everyday use. The EDC transmission moves smoothly up and down the gears as a function of the driver’s needs. With this engine and gearbox combination, the new Espace boasts market-leading levels of driving pleasure and economy. Acceleration from 80 to 120kph is achieved in just 7.9s in sixth gear, while fuel consumption of just 4.6 litres/100km is equivalent to CO emissions of 120g/km*. (in Germany: 4,7l/100 km - 123 g/km CO *)

Energy dCi 160 EDC Twin Turbo

Affordable performance

The Energy dCi 130: 130hp and 320Nm torque available from 1,750rpm

This affordable engine – highly-regarded for its generosity and efficiency – comes with a six-speed manual gearbox. Its fuel consumption of only 4.4 litres/100km and CO emissions of 116 g/km* make it a popular choice amongst high-mileage drivers mindful of economy.

Sporty genes

The Energy TCe 200 EDC: 200hp and 260Nm torque available from 2,500rpm

This petrol unit, derived from Renault Sport’s direct-injection turbo engine, imbues the new Renault Espace with its sporty genes. Its nimble nature is confirmed by a 0-100kph time of just 8.6s, yet this sharp performance and enjoyment do not come at the expense of economy, since fuel consumption stands at only 6.2 litres/100km (CO emissions: 140g/km*).

250kg lighter and 20% more economical

The new Espace has achieved a significant weight saving of as much as 250kg compared to the Grand Espace IV. This 13% reduction is evenly split between the body, chassis, powertrain and equipment (including the seats). New platform: the new Espace sees Renault use the CMF C/D (Common Module Family) modular architecture for the first time. It also combines lightweight materials: aluminium for the doors and bonnet (new), Noryl plastic for the front wings and thermoplastics for the tailgate. Refined aerodynamics: the Cd figure of 0.30 (0.031 less than its predecessor) and the CdA measurement of 0.840m2 (0.091m2 less than its predecessor) yield reduced fuel consumption, particularly on motorways. The fuel consumption and CO emissions gains are greater than 20%* compared to the Espace IV, based upon equivalent performance.

Media Contact * Fuel consumption and CO emissions homologated in accordance with the appropriate legislation. 1 The CMF platform is used by other Alliance brands.

03 Reassuring, safe and built to last

The new Espace provides a safe, reassuring and user-friendly driving experience, so that you can enjoy its rewarding sensations at the wheel. To achieve this, Renault has equipped the new Espace with a number of warning and protective systems to provide a high level of active safety.

At the same time, Renault is maintaining a rigorous interest in passive safety. Going beyond Euro NCAP’s increasingly more exacting standards, Renault has always set its own, even more stringent criteria in the most crucial areas.

Finally, Renault is firmly focused on high quality. The new Espace was methodically designed, built and tested to last.

Peace of mind

The new Renault Espace is fitted with a wide range of driver aids to alert and assist motorists.

Safety: Adaptive Cruise Control, Active Emergency Braking System.

Alerts: Lane Departure Warning, Safe Distance Warning, Traffic Sign Recognition with speed alert, Blind Spot Warning.

Convenience: Easy Park Assist, front, rear and side parking sensors, rear-view camera, Automatic High/Low beam, heads-up information display, electronic parking brake, Hill Start Assist, hands-free card, powered tailgate.

The main driving aids: functions and benefits

 Adaptive Cruise Control

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) automatically adjusts the new Espace’s speed to maintain a pre-selected gap with the vehicle ahead. The front radar has a 120-metre range and calculates the speed and distance of the preceding vehicle. It then communicates with the engine and braking system to regulate speed in accordance with the desired following distance. It is activated via either a button to the side of the gear lever or another on the steering wheel. A green light shows on the dashboard when the system is active. It works at speeds from 40-140kph and is capable of slowing the vehicle at up to one-third of its maximum braking capacity. An illuminated bar graph indicates the driver’s selected following distance: it runs from 1 bar (1sec) to 3 bars (2sec).

Active emergency braking system

The active emergency braking system (AEBS) provides drivers with visible and sonic alerts if it is necessary to brake to avoid or reduce a frontal impact. It can also deploy the brakes automatically. A front radar detects the distance to the car ahead (calculated in seconds) and, if the risk of a collision is apparent, it initially triggers visible and sonic alerts through the dashboard and head-up display. If the driver fails to brake, or does so insufficiently, the automatic braking system is activated. The system becomes active when you start the engine and works at speeds from 30 to 140kph. It can be switched off via the R-Link 2 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistant Systems) menu, but will be reactivated when next you turn on the engine. The system can be accessed via a dedicated button, as well as R-Link 2. The AEBS anticipates a delayed reaction on the driver’s part. This device complements the emergency brake assist (EBA) system.

Lane Departure Warning

The lane departure warning function (LDW) provides visible and audible warnings alerts if the car unexpectedly crosses a solid or broken white line. Located behind the rear-view mirror, a fixed camera tracks road markings and anticipates the vehicle’s trajectory. If the driver crosses a white line without first having indicated: 1. A visible warning (red line) appears on both the dashboard and the head-up

display. 2. An audible warning reproduces the sound of rumble strips. The system becomes active from 70kph, so long as there are road markings for the on-board camera to track. The operational controls and settings for alert volume/ sensor sensitivity can be accessed via the R-Link 2 driver aids menu or else directly via a dashboard button.

Safe Distance Warning

The Safe Distance Warning (SDW) helps drivers to maintain a sensible gap to traffic ahead. A warning pictogram corresponds to the time interval that separates the new Espace from the car in front. It takes the form of an intuitive bar graph on the dashboard and head-up display. Operational at speeds from 30 to 200kph, the system can be switched on via the R-Link 2 driver aids menu. The radar does not react to parked cars and has no influence on the braking system.

Traffic Sign Recognition with speed alert

Traffic Sign Recognition with speed alert (TSR) provides drivers with a visible warning if they exceed the speed limit. The windscreen-mounted camera is able to recognise traffic signs and combine this information with navigation data to determine the posted speed limit which is shown on both the head-up display and the dashboard. If the car is travelling faster than the legal limit, a visible warning lights up. If the speed limiter is activated, the system will use road signs to set an advisory limit that the driver can adjust manually (using the + or - buttons on the steering wheel).

Three key points distinguish the Renault system:

1. Automatic identification of road sign speed units (kph or mph).

2. Recognition of windscreen wiper settings to regulate speed to the permitted wet- weather limit.

3. An alarm sounds in any zone where particular vigilance is required.

The system can be switched on or off via the R-Link 2’s driver aids menu.

Blind Spot Warning

The Blind Spot Warning (BSW) provides drivers with a visual alert if another vehicle should appear in either of their rear-view mirrors’ blind spots. Four sensors (two at the front, two at the rear) detect any moving objects – including motorcycles – that are concealed within these areas (which extend 3m to the side and 3m to the rear). When overtaking, the warning LED comes on only if there is a small speed differen- tial between the two vehicles. The system functions from 30 to 140kph and can be switched on or off via the R-Link 2 driver aids menu.

Parking aids

Two complementary systems help drivers to guide their new Espace in to and out of parking spaces:

Easy Park Assist After engaging Easy Park Assist, the driver selects the type of parking space to be negotiated: angled or square. Ultrasound sensors analyse and measure the available space and guidance lines are posted on the video screen. Once the instruction has been given, the vehicle steers itself into the space although the driver continues to operate the throttle and brakes. The system operates at speeds below 30kph.

Parking sensors A repetitive beep sounds as the vehicle approaches an obstacle. Its frequency increases and the sound becomes continuous when the obstacle is less than 20cm away. The alert is accompanied by a visual aid which works at speeds below 10kph.

Automatic High/Low beam adjustment

The Automatic High/Low beam (AHL) switches from full to dipped beam (and vice versa) without any driver input. The main beam dips automatically when the frontal camera detects either oncoming vehicles or that the car is entering a built-up area. Dipped beam returns to the full headlight setting as soon as conditions are appropriate (i.e. the absence of any other vehicles in the vicinity, or leaving a built- up area). This system starts to work from 45kph. It can be switched on or off via the R-Link 2 driver aids menu.

At home on rough terrain thanks to Advanced Traction Control…

Known as Advanced Traction Control, the system on the new Espace provides extra grip when starting on a non-asphalt road or any other slippery surface: mud, leaves, sand… Drivers can choose between Automatic or Manual modes.

Automatic mode: the default setting, it identifies the need to adjust the brake torque (via a series of tiny braking pulses) and engine torque (by controlling wheel speed) so that the tyre is able to provide sufficient grip for the conditions. To enhance efficiency, each driven wheel is monitored independently.

Manual mode: more restrictive, but potentially even more efficient for an expe- rienced driver who is happy to control engine torque via the throttle pedal. The system will continue to regulate brake torque. Manual mode is activated via the R-Link driver aids menu. Automatic mode re-engages once the car exceeds 50kph.

Finally, the new Espace benefits from Hill Start Assist (HSA), even when fitted with EDC automatic transmission. This system prevents the vehicle rolling backwards on a slope, even when engine torque is insufficient to ensure a clean start.

Passive safety

Target: five euro NCAP stars in 2015. But that’s not all…

The new Renault Espace protects its occupants in the event of an accident. The target is not just to obtain a five-star Euro NCAP rating in line with the more stringent criteria that apply in 2015. Renault goes much further than that and more than meets the required standard in two key areas: structural strength and ‘submarining’ (a passenger sliding beneath their seatbelt). These criteria have a particular importance in the 2015 Euro NCAP ratings but to Renault they have been fundamental focal points for more than 15 years.

On the new Espace, the engine sub-frame plays an increased and very important energy absorption role in the event of a frontal impact, thanks to variable-resistance deformable structures. For its part, the reinforced central cell is designed to preserve the integrity of the cabin in even the most severe circumstances.

Safety equipment for all on board:

Six airbags

- Two large volume, dual-generator front airbags with inflation that adapts according to the nature of the impact and passenger seating position,

- Two latest-generation thorax/shoulder airbags for the front seats, for even greater effectiveness,

- Two curtain airbags.

Safety belts

- Front seats: pretensioners with adaptive load limiters, which adjust according to impact severity and passenger seating position,

- Second-row seats: pretensioners with adaptive load limiters.

Seats - Anti-whiplash front head rests, - Anti-submarining seats on front and second-row seats, - i-Size standard ISOFIX child-seat fittings for the three second-row seats, - Six possible positions for child seats to be secured by seat belts.

Durability

The pursuit of high quality is constant in every domain and is an absolute priority with the new Espace. In order to produce long-lasting quality, Renault has deployed new manufacturing methods, called upon its wide-ranging skills and developed an array of specific tests.

 Design:

The quest for high quality led to a more stringent design brief. Construction, materials and efficient processes (e.g. aluminium doors) were key priorities from the moment the new Espace was first conceived. Significant attention was paid to reducing vibrations and to perfecting fit and finish. The rich paintwork benefits from a long-lasting lacquer. The panoramic windscreen rises over the front seats and blends seamlessly with the new Espace roof. The use of high-grade materials is clearly visible: chrome, the console finish, tufted boot carpet and slush-moulded soft-touch dashboard. Pleasing to the eye and likewise to touch, all these materials feel particularly pleasant to use.

Manufacture:

Renault’s Douai factory received a €420 million investment. The latest hot-stamping technology was installed, body shells receive a 5,000-point inspection, the paint shop was fitted with a new light booth, fresh quality control procedures were put in place and plant employees were given 100,000 hours of training to qualify for high-end factory certification.. As part of a balanced collaboration, and sharing an aim for the highest possible quality, Daimler were involved in providing feedback to Renault on production process quality for new Espace (for instance the optimisation of paint procedures).

Testing:

Beyond its quality control checks, Renault has developed a wide range of specific tests to prove that the new Espace will maintain its looks and performance over time. Conducted around the clock, these tests – performed by humans – reproduce the most rigorous facets of daily usage, intensely and repetitively. Before going on sale, the first examples of the new Espace will have been methodically ‘maltreated’ for several months: the controls and equipment will have been manhandled thousands of times, the trim (cloth or plastic) successively rubbed, dirtied and then cleaned… Thanks to this process, the new Espace will have had its doors opened 22,000 times, while passengers clambered in and out or fastened seatbelts, the driver’s window will have been used 8,000 times, the sun visor lowered 1,500 times…

These checks determine the ageing process of a vehicle after several years of hard use. They complement road tests conducted in extreme conditions on a variety of surfaces at the Renault-Nissan Alliance’s test centres.
