How long have you lived on the gold coast?I have lived on the Gold Coast for 8 years. After I completed my Master degree and worked in hospitality sector, I left Gold Coast for Sydney in 2009 to chase my fashion styling dream. On Sunday 23 April, visitors will enjoy 10-minute cinematic masterpieces by 12 emerging filmmakers from around Australia at SIPFest, an annual short film competition that transforms Surfers Paradise beach into a unique outdoor cinema experience.

Audiences will also be treated to some of the best screenings from the London Short Film Festival, on Monday 24 April. Known as the premiere UK showcase for cutting-edge UK independent film, the London Short Film Festival will screen in Australia for the first time with a 90-minute program by the ocean.

critic and TV personality David Stratton. The Chauvel Award is an Australian screen industry award, which acknowledges an individual who has made significant contribution to Australian screen industry. The 2016 recipient was Australian actress Claudia Karvan.

Other special events popping up throughout the Festival will include the 3rd annual Women In Film Lunch, plus QPow! free movies, an entertaining movie trivia night and red-carpet film premieres with directors, actors and producers attending for intimate Q&A’s with audiences.

As Summer relationships blossom, I begin to receive an increasing number of enquiries about pre-

nuptial agreements. Often, the enquiry begins with a client asking if prenups are worth the paper they are written on? Having prepared hundreds of these documents for clients over the years, I can quite confidently confirm they are worth having – if prepared correctly.

Many people view such documents as being unnecessary, citing reasons such as their relationship is different from those of others, their love for each other is unending or a raft of other reasons. Unfortunately, I can counter their optimism by having a large number of clients at any time, all of whom thought the same way, but are now involved in a family law dispute.

The Family Law Act was amended to include Pre-nuptial agreements, more correctly referred to in Australia as a Financial Agreements from late in 2000. Therefore, prenups are not a new concept or gimmick in Australia. In fact, prenups have a long history of providing the highest level of protection available in the event of separation, other than to simply live alone. Importantly, prenups are now also available to those in, or intending to live in, a de facto relationship.

However, for a prenup to be binding and enforceable, it must strictly comply with the technical requirements of the legislation. Amongst these is the requirement that each must have independent legal advice. This is to ensure that each party has been advised as to the effect of the agreement on their rights and the advantages and disadvantages to the client entering the agreement. It also helps to overcome any allegation one party was forced into the agreement or did not understand their rights and obligations.

The requirement of independent legal advice is particularly important as parties entering a prenup are effectively contracting out of rights they would otherwise have to claim on property in the event of separation. Typically, such rights to claim on property would include real property, business interests and superannuation (and the

mythical wine collection – who has one?). Accordingly, prenups should not be entered lightly and should never be dumped on a person on the eleventh hour or given as an ultimatum to separation.

Rather, prenups should be entered after the parties have given it careful consideration and had open discussions with each other about the purpose and intention of it. Although counter intuitive, prenups are often entered by parties based on their love and respect for each other and their desire to avoid conflict and to be able to move on with financial certainty in the event of separation.

It is my experience the vast number of people entering prenups fall into four categories, namely:

• Those who have been married before and want to avoid conflict if the relationship ends. Such people are no stranger to the high emotional and financial costs associated with family law proceedings, and not surprising the most common category.

• Often interrelated with category one above, are those that have children from previous relationships and want to ensure their assets are protected and remains intact for their children in the event of separation. Prenups are binding on the parties’ estates and are easily and effectively dovetailed into an overall estate plan.

CIRCUMSTANCES.

• Those who are slightly older when entering a relationship for the first time but want to protect their accumulated wealth; and

• Those who have an interest or entitlement to family interests (such as businesses or farms) and seek only to quarantine those assets in the event of separation.

The category of people who are conspicuously absent above, are younger people. This may be explained by the fact they often have little or no assets to protect currently and don’t appreciate that they will accumulate wealth over time. Perhaps people in this category should give some thought to why so many people entering second, third or fourth relationships enter prenups.

If you decide to enter a prenup, it is important to ensure that it is maintains a quality of fairness if the relationship is long lasting, one party receives a windfall or inheritance, in the event separation occurs when a party has an illness or injury, there are children, one party’s vastly superior income earning capacity and the like. It is seldom (if ever) a good idea to enter an agreement that fails to consider any of these vicissitudes of life and makes no provisions these events. The agreement needs to be well considered and fluid enough to roll with the punches and strokes of luck life throws your way.

So, to answer one of the most common questions I receive, yes prenups are worth the paper they are written on – if prepared by an experienced family lawyer, for the right reasons and with foresight.

PADDOCK to POOCHWhen Frontier Pets founder and producer Diana Scott sets her mind to something, people say she’s like a dog with a bone.

Some years back, disheartened with commercially produced dog food and the lack of information about

ingredients on pet food packaging, she saw a niche in the market for pet owners who shared her ethos: ethical farming, nutrition, and honest, reliable labelling on pet food.

Diana describes it as “a light bulb moment”. After more than two years of research, Diana realised most commercial dog foods were full of industrialised animal by-products, cereals, grains, pasta and rice, which should never be fed to the pets in the first place.

She also learned that kibble (or dried food) is massively over processed and whilst humans are catching on to the perils of consuming over-processed foods, most are slow to catch on to the dangers of feeding it to pets.

She decided to do something about it: develop a pet food that supported ethical farming, with a long-term goal to end the need for the industrialised option. First and foremost, Diana recognised the need to educate and inform pet owners to bring about a revolution in the pet food industry.

“I want to end factory farming. End it. Full-stop. I want to educate the public on the true cost of factory farming and how it’s destroying our planet,” said Diana.

Teaming up with leading animal nutritionist, Dr Kathy Cornack, Diana developed a range of dog food

that contains only ethically-sourced ingredients including ethically farmed and free-range meats, free-range eggs, organic fruit and vegetables and organic turmeric.

Diana said the specialist vet nutritionists she has spoken to have reinforced that our pets are getting sick and obese as a result of poor diets.

“The average person has no idea what they should really be feeding their pets. People need to see

“It’s so much easier than hand-preparing your dog’s meals and in most cases a lot cheaper. People deserve to know what they are buying and feeding their pets and their pets deserve to be fed an appropriate diet that will ensure they live a long, happy and healthy life,” she said.

Association unites a mix of surfers, beach goers and community-minded people.

According to Ian Gay, President of the local brand of this worthy organisation, “The aim of the DSA is to take people of all ages and all abilities surfing in a fun, friendly and safe environment”.

“Our mantra of ‘Smiles On Dials’ is seen at every event with plenty of smiles and laughs from surfing participants, carers, families and volunteers alike. The DSA is recognised as setting world best practice in its training and events.”

The Gold Coast DSA runs five events per season, running from October to February. “At each event we average between 35 and 45 disabled participants with a wide range of physical and mental disability and we get them all surfing with the help of, on average, 80 to 90 volunteers who all give up their morning to give those less fortunate the experience of a visit to the beach and a surf in the waves.”

The DSA is a charity run solely by volunteers and receives no government funding. Events are run by branches all around Australia and each branch raises money via donations, barbeques and sponsorship to keep its valuable work going.

Volunteers for Gold Coast events are welcome to just turn up on the day and lend a hand. “No surfing experience required as we have jobs for everyone!”

A BMI above 30 fairly accurately identifies if you have obesity. The higher the BMI the more likely you are to develop weight related health problems.

recognises obesity as a chronic progressive disease associated with multiple health problems – it is not a cosmetic issue or measure of willpower. Like most chronic diseases, obesity requires a genetic predisposition and environmental triggers to develop, and lifestyle choices can make the disease better or worse.

An important distinction to make is that a person is  not obese, they  have  obesity. Obesity is not a part of your identity; it is a disease to overcome.

HOW IS OBESITY AFFECTING YOUR HEALTH?Obesity has overtaken smoking as the leading causes of preventable illness and premature death in Australia.

At any age, having obesity shortens lifespan. Younger people (aged 25-35) with severe obesity are 12 times more likely to die early than their peers without obesity.  Adults who have obesity at 40 years of age die on average seven years sooner than adults whose BMI is within the healthy range. Studies show that an increased  BMI  is associated with an increased rate of death from all causes. The impact of years of life lost is greater for men than for women. It has been estimated that the steady rise in life expectancy over the last 200 years may come to an end due to the increasing prevalence of obesity.

Out of ten people with obesity, eight people will develop one of the following obesity related co-morbidities and six people will develop at least three:• Type 2 Diabetes• Heart disease• Stroke• Cholesterol problems• High blood pressure• Chronic kidney disease• Respiratory disease• Obstructive Sleep Apnoea• Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT IT?F o r t u n a t e l y , obesity can be treated. Weight loss can reverse most of the damage done by obesity.

Most people struggle to lose weight through the oft-recommended methods of diet and exercise. Adults with obesity are unlikely to reach a healthy BMI without the help of weight loss surgery. A 10 year longitudinal study in the UK of almost 300,000 people showed that for women with a BMI above 35 (severe obesity) only 1 in 430 would achieve a healthy body weight within 12 months without surgery. Men fared worse, with only 1 in 701 achieving a healthy weight within twelve months without surgery.

The American National Institutes of Health (NIH) has reported that people with severe obesity are resistant to sustaining weight loss achieved by the traditional recommendation of reducing calories and increasing exercise. The NIH has recognised that bariatric surgery is the only effective long-term treatment for severe obesity.

WHAT IS THE EXPECTED WEIGHT LOSS? Bariatric surgery typically produces sustained weight loss of between 60-80% of excess weight, depending on the procedure selected. Some people lose 100-110% of their excess weight. The exceptionally high reduction in morbidity and mortality that results from weight loss surgery is due to the improvement or resolution of obesity-related disease. Weight loss surgery is now very similar in safety to a routine gallbladder operation and safer than a joint replacement.
