IsraelSAR Middle and High School students had an immersive educationon the Israeli political system in preparation for the elections. For weeks, students learned about the governing system, electoralprocess, political parties, candidates, and campaigns. Simulatedelections, complete with private ballot boxes and studentregistration officials, were held to ingrain students with a connectionto Israel, and the tools to become strong advocates.

front & center

Q. Every morning I’m grateful…A. …for the community we have at SAR, especially the children

who represent our future. Each day I’m lucky to interact withdifferent kinds of people, on different kinds of issues. Every dayis quite different.

Q. I got into education because…

A. …of the inspiring role models I had. Both of my parents served, and continue to serve, the Jewish community. I grew upsurrounded by people who made a difference in the world. And simply, I love teaching.

Q. The educator who most impacted my life…

A. …is Rabbi Yonah Fuld, SAR Academy principal, 1983–1993, wholiterally brought me to SAR as a child—he drove me daily fromQueens. He lives with so much passion for what he does, forMedinat Yisrael, and for children. He modeled for me how tobring out the positive in people, especially kids.

Q. If I wasn’t at SAR, I might be…

A. …living in Europe, running a Jewish foundation. (Prior to SAR, Iworked with the Lauder Foundation establishing Jewish dayschools in Russia and Germany.) Or, I would be applying to runa high tech company in Israel (Waze?). I’d love to be trainingfor the Iron Man, but the three miles we do in Running with theRabbi may be more realistic!

Q. The most challenging part of my role is…

A. …balancing the needs and interests of different members of ourcommunity—families, staff, lay leadership—and, finding the timeto give people the appropriate attention.

Q. Three things I expect in my colleagues are…

A. …people of integrity, who are humble and reflective; who listenas much as they offer advice and opinions; and, who areoptimistic in how they see people, challenges, and the world. Iwant colleagues to be thoughtful in recognizing that the worldis a complex place, and there are no one-size fits all solutions.

Q. A long time ago, I learned that success…

A. …follows hard work, appears after many setbacks, and requiresother people.

Q&AW/RABBI HARCSZTARKOne of the best quotes thathas resonated with me…

קבל את האמת ממי שאמרה“Receive the truth fromwhomever might havestated.”—Maimonides

Q&AW/RABBI KRAUSS (’84)Q. Every morning, I’m grateful…

A. …that I am blessed to spend the day doing something that Ibelieve in so strongly with colleagues for whom I have thegreatest respect, and learning and talking with kids who arebright, passionate, full of energy, and a lot of fun to be around. It’s not just a job; it’s really a part of my being.

Q. I got into education because…

A. …I love Torah and Jewish life and wanted to continue to learnand share with others. Over the years, I have increasinglyappreciated how much you learn and deepen yourunderstanding of the world when you dialogue with othersaround a text; where you both teach and learn through thediscussion that you are having. That is the best thing aboutbeing in a classroom.

Q. The educator who most directly impacted my life was…

A. …Rav Mendel Blachman, my rebbe in KBY (Yeshivat KeremB’Yavneh). His combination of passion for Torah and Judaism, hisopenness to the world of ideas and his commitment to workinghard came together in a way that was very inspiring to me.

Q. If I wasn’t at SAR, I would be…

A. …homesick.

Q. The most challenging part of my role is…

A. …teaching how to live the best kind of Modern Orthodox life isthe most noble thing in the world to me. It is also like walking atightrope. You have to be willing to constantly assess where youare and how you are doing, whether you could be doing betteror should be doing it differently. The most challenging part ofmy role is to communicate strongly how to be committed toJewish life and practice and open to the world in the bestpossible way.

Q. My most trusted source of Judaic knowledge is…

A. …I don’t think I can pick one person or text. I love my libraryand I love that I have family and colleagues with whom I candiscuss Torah, philosophy, education, and the sefarim that Iread. Books, sefarim, and my support system join together toprovide profound guidance.

Q. If I could pass advice onto the newest generation of Jewishleaders, I would say…

A. …know Torah, engage the world, believe in yourself and your people.

If I could pass advice on tothe newest generation ofJewish leaders, I would say...

עומד אתה מי לפני דע“Know before whom you stand.”

Listen to and know those youserve. Always grow yourself.Try new things.
