Article & Photos by Brian

Maloney

May 10th marks the grand open-

ing of Wisconsin’s newest

antiques shop: Weyauwega’s

Rural Relics Fabrics & Antiques.

The cooperative effort of four area

antiques enthusiasts, Rural Relics

will offer a wide array of antiques

and collectibles from toys, furni-

ture, and stoneware to a great

selection of vintage movie posters

and memorabilia. Shoppers can

also choose from some exuberant-

ly painted vintage furniture done by local artist Rebecca Eckhardt of Eckhardt’s

Originals.

But wander to the rear of the store, located in an 1896 brick storefront right on Main

Street, and you’ll see a “store within a store” filled with quilting supplies, patterns,

and kits. That’s because one of the partners in this new venture is noted quilter &

quilt collector Jean Teal.

Jean Teal has been prominent in the quilting industry for more than two decades,

winning awards for her designs at prestigious events including the New York

American Folk Art Museum’s “Great American Quilt Festival” You’ll find many of

Jean’s “Designing Dresses” series of patterns and kits here, plus hundreds of fabrics

both pre-cut and on bolts - including many faithful reproductions of antique and vin-

tage patterns. You can find many of her popular patterns and kits for sale at her web-

site too: www.jeanteal.com.

Jean’s son Ian Teal is also an active partner in Rural Relics, and will be offering

pieces from his large collection of movie memorabilia. Posters are his specialty, and

you’ll lots to choose from at the shop, from little “heralds” handed out to movie

goers in days gone by to huge “three-sheet” posters standing nearly six feet tall.

The shop’s two other partners are Kathy Fehl and Julie Spriggs, who both lend their

years of experience and expertise in the antiques field to the project. So come on out!

Rural Relics is located at 100 West Main Street in downtown Weyauwega - just

seven miles from Waupaca’s famed Chain O’ Lakes. They’re open Wednesday

through Friday from noon to 5pm, and from 11am to 4pm on both Saturday and

Sunday.

And while driving up Weyauwega’s Main Street on your way to Rural Relics be

sure to take a peek at Kathy Fehl and Ian Teal’s other project: Weyauwega’s historic

Gerold Opera House. The pair formed the non-profit Wega Arts in 2007 specifically

to restore the grand 1915 building. Today, the Gerold hosts events ranging from

regional symphony orchestras to popular performers from near and far. It’s also

home to the improbable but very successful Weyauwega International Film Festival,

who last year screened thirty-eight movies from seventeen countries. They included

the Midwest premier of Holy Motors - the film deemed by the Village Voice as the

year’s best. Just go to www.wegaarts.org for all the details.

For more information about Rural Relics Fabrics & Antiques, visit their website

www.ruralrelics.com, or give them a call at 920-538-5068. While you’re online, be

sure to visit www.weyauwegachamber.com too, to get a taste of what the little town

of Weyauwega is all about. And as always, keep an eye out for featured items from

Rural Relics Fabrics & Antiques in the Auction Action Antique News!

Weyauwega, Wisconsin: the historic Gerold

Opera House, just down Main Street from

the antiques shop. Purchased in 2007 by the

pair through their non-profit organization

Wega Arts, the restored structure now hosts

events ranging from The Weyauwega

International Film Festival to recent per-

Article & Photos by Mike Eckles

They came from the collection of the auction’s headlining

consignors – Bill and Kathie Gasperino, known in antique

circles for having one of the finest country store and

advertising collections in the United States. Also offered

was Part 2 of the Robert and Harriett Potter fire fighting

collection and Part 3 of the Ed and Christy Ramsey col-

lection of toys and pedal cars.

In all, over 2,400 lots came up for bid in an

auction that grossed about $2.2 million. “It was

one of our best spring auctions ever,” remarked

Mike Eckles of Showtime Auction Services, based

in Woodhaven, Mich. “Over 500 lots were rare

and unseen country store and general store dis-

plays and products from the Gasperinos. I can’t

stress enough the quality of their collection.”

The auction featured merchandise from over 30 categories

(fairly typical for Showtime Auction Services,

which only conducts two auctions a year, spring

and fall sales that are mega-events).

Approximately 2,200 people registered to bid

online, via LiveAuctioneers.com and

iCollector.com. There were also over 300 phone bids and more than 250 absentee

bids recorded.

Following are additional highlights from the auction. All prices quoted

include a buyer’s premium of between 14-20 percent, depending on how

people bid and the method of payment.

The sale’s top lot was an extremely rare Campbell’s

Soup embossed tin sign (“6 Plates for 10 Cents – Just Add Hot

Water and Serve”). Measuring 40 inches by 27 1/2 inches, it is

one of the most sought after advertising signs by advertising and

folk art collectors. Some nail holes around the perimeter and

light rusting didn’t deter bidders, who drove the final price to

$60,000.

Following close behind, at $57,000, was a 1917 La

France automatic aerial ladder truck, professionally restored

and in excellent running condition. “In our opinion, this is the

finest hook and ladder fire truck ever offered at auction,” Mr.

Eckles said. The truck (Reg. #352) came with a period braided

life net and equipment, and said on the side, “Martin’s Ferry Hook & Ladder.”

A Bellingham Bay Beer reverse glass sign in the original frame, in mostly

excellent condition and 19 1/2 inches in diameter, soared to $31,200; an outdoor sand

sign for Walden Eddy Plows (Greenwich, N.Y.), in very good condition, 59 inches

by 24 inches, brought $20,520; and a rare Kelly Tire round tin sign in good original

condition, 24 inches in diameter, made $17,100.

“The Happy Jap” coin-operated gum vendor,

made circa 1902 and in good original condition, ham-

mered for $28,500; and a National Cash Register Model

442-E-L cash register with reproduction top sign (“Try

Our Oysters”), professionally restored by Peter Warns,

whose grandfather was a repairman at NCR when the

brass machines were first made, rose to $6,600.

A bronze sculpture by the Egyptian-born

American artist Maher Morocos (b. 1946), one of only 20

cast, changed hands for $15,960. The sculpture, 34 inch-

es tall, depicted an American Indian brave leaning down

from his horse and handing a canteen to a wounded, thirsty

cowboy. Titled The Only Good Indian, it was designed as

a 73rd birthday present for Pres. Ronald Reagan.

An authentic Sioux Native American beaded baby

cradle in a geometric pattern, made circa 1890 from

sinew, sewn supple cowhide, 21 inches tall, garnered

$7,500; a circa 1930s Steelcraft Auburn Super Charge

pedal car, fully restored, with pneumatic tires, 55 inch-

es long, sped off for $4,560; and a J. Chein Popeye bag

puncher tin toy, near mint in the box, hit $3,600.

Showtime Auction Services’ next big auction will be held Oct. 3-5, also at

the Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds in Ann Arbor, Mich. It will feature the life-

time advertising collection of Don and Diane Sayrizi, plus

consignments from over 100 advanced collectors, in the

many categories that have made Showtime Auction Services

renowned in the industry.

These include petroliana (gas station) and automobilia, gen-

eral store, country store, toys, pedal cars, barber shop, tobac-

ciana, fire fighting antiques and memorabilia, veterinary, hard-

ware, advertising signs, store tins, soda fountain, Coca-Cola,

Western, Native American, farm signs, whiskey, breweriana,

match safes, drug store, saloon, post office, coin-op, arcade,

scales, gambling, cash registers, folk art, department store,

millinery, showcases and store fixtures.

Showtime Auction Services is always accepting

quality items for future sales. To consign an item, an estate

or an entire collection, you may call Michael Eckles at

Book Description

This book provides a unique view of the development of military and commercial

aviation in Japan from the pioneering years before World War I to the end of World

War II. There are comparatively few books in English that illustrate aviation in Japan

in the years before World War II. This is the first book to make extensive use of

Japanese aviation postcards to show how aviation in Japan grew from a dependence

on foreign aircraft designs and engineers in the early years to an independent indus-

try that produced world-class airplanes. The book uses more than 250 postcards to

trace the history of Imperial Japanese Army and Navy aviation, and commercial avi-

ation, during this thirty-five year period. Each of the book's four chapters begins with

a narrative survey of key developments during the period covered. The postcards,

some in color and some in black and white, show both military and commercial air-

planes, many famous and some less so. Of particular interest to those interested in

Japanese military aviation in World War II will be a number of postcards of wartime

propaganda art.

This year, Betty Harrington, principal designer for Ceramic Arts Studio ofMadison, would have turned 100. To mark the occasion, CAS Collectors is throw-ing an extra-special party! The theme of the group's 2013 Convention, set forSaturday, August 24th, 2013 in Madison, is “Happy Birthday, Betty! A CAS FamilyReunion!” In addition to celebrating “Betty's 100th”, collectors will also celebratethe enduring appeal of Ceramic Arts figurines, which brightened homes from coastto coast during the 1940s and '50s, and continue to brighten hearts today.

From 9 am to 4 pm on August 24th, 2013 Convention attendees will take inthe Wisconsin Pottery Association Show & Sale at the Alliant Energy Center. Later, all will gather at Madison's Howard Johnson Plaza for the Convention festivities, with activities and décor centered around a fun-filled “birthday party” theme. There'll be games from long ago, party favors and hats, souvenirs, colorful center-pieces, - even a birthday cake! In short, everything that makes family reunions sounforgettable.

Getting the evening underway will be a social hour, and the popular “CASOn Display Contest”; all in attendance are invited to submit entries. A buffet dinner, raffle, and membership meeting will be followed by the club's annual auction, fea-turing professional auctioneer Shirley Baumann. Events will conclude with doorprizes, and presentation of the 2013 CAS Collectors Commemorative.

Convention registration, which remains at $60 per person, includes allevening activities, plus the Commemorative. Registrations received by May 31stwill be eligible for an “Earliest Earlybird” prize drawing, to be held at theConvention. Forms and additional information are available on the club's website,www.cascollectors.com, or by writing CAS Collectors, 206 Grove Street, Rockton,IL 61072. Membership in CAS Collectors is open to all those with an interest in thework of Ceramic Arts Studio.

Celebrate the heritage of Ceramic Arts Studio-and take a stroll down mem-ory lane-at the nineteenth CAS Collectors Convention. Ceramics collectors fromnear and far will gather August 24th, for “Happy Birthday, Betty! A CAS FamilyReunion!. It's the kind of wonderful get-together that only comes around once every100 years!

National Depression Glass AssociationThe National Depression Glass Association - preserving America's glass manufac-turing heritage - is dedicated to the preservation of American made glassware man-ufactured just before, during, and immediately after the "Great Depression". Theorganization is also dedicated to the dissemination of educational informationregarding the same - including a membership newsletter, "The News & Views," anannual convention and show, and a variety of other member services. The NDGA'sultimate goal is a first-class museum of American-made glass and related items.

The NDGA website - www.ndga.net - has been greatly improved with a total newdesign and look earlier this year. The primary purpose of the site is to provide infor-mation to the members and other site visitors. The homepage provides a listing ofcontents and features the latest NDGA news. Appropriately heading this list is thelatest news on the much anticipated July 2009 annual convention.

There is a growing section on The National Collection and how to donate eitherglass or cash for this project.

The site contains a wealth of information. Articles on Depression Glass, dozens ofpast features from the NDGA publications, glass reference books, past glass com-pany advertisements, a directory of glass dealers and another of glass collectingclubs and photos of members' glass collections.

Anyone who happens to have the least bit of interest and appreciation for glasswareis going to find this site a place on the Internet to visit again and again... and it mustbe a tremendous resource for NDGA members. Actually there also are members-only pages on the site in addition to all the public pages.

Written and submitted by Harriet RiceIn the small towns, villages and along the rustic roads of northwestern

Wisconsin are some of the state's most valuable assets: creative human beings whonurture beauty, value nature and share their heritage through places, objects and edi-bles that are handmade and homegrown.

Now there's a brand hew paperback guidebook published by theWisconsin's Northwest Heritage Passage:: 208 pages that shine a light on theseplaces and people who live and work along and around the Highway 63 corridor in13 northwest Wisconsin counties.

It's called The Wisconsin Passage: an Adventure in the Handmade,Homegrown and Historical Offerings of Wisconsin from the Mississippi River tothe Lake Superior, or simply, The Wisconsin Passage. The book is the culminationof a dream that began 12 years ago when a group of northwest Wisconsin peoplelike Spooner weaver Alene Peterson realized that the cottage industries of workingcrafters, artists, growers were key to a sustainable “creative economy” in thisregion.

Peterson and a committee of five - all volunteers -- began by establishing aset of criteria. “We were looking for locally made or grown items, quality products, interesting destinations, environmental responsibility, openness to the public, andsafety,” said Peterson.

Each of the 350 listees in the book submitted written descriptions of theirstudios, galleries, farms, museums, and other arts, agricultures or culture-relatedbusinesses. Committee members visited each site, providing feedback about theirexperiences. Others collected and worked with submitted images or took photo-graphs themselves.

Janet Krokson of Spooner was the book committee's muse who gathered thedescriptions, historical facts, anecdotes, and other materials, weaving them into anarrative that makes the book an entertaining read as much as a travel guide.

Editor of the Spooner Advocate and life-long resident of the area, Kroksonsaid, “It was a labor of love. I've lived in Highway 63 communities for the past 31years,” she said. “I love Wisconsin, and I particularly love this part of the state.”

She continued, “I think of The Wisconsin Passage as a passage to more pas-sages - to bygone days, to an adventure that anyone can take part in. It's about artists, artisans, performers, nature lovers, natural growers, pioneer settlers and storytellers ofmany genres who forged a life and culture along the heritage roads and trails.”

Peterson added, “We want this book to bring the public together with artistsand growers where they live and work and showcase those hometowns, villages andfarms as well as the natural beauty of northwest Wisconsin destinations for travel-ers of all ages,”

The WNHP was founded in 1999 as an arts support group dedicated to sup-porting, showcasing and educating the public about the talents and creativity ofnorthwest Wisconsin's communities. In 2001, 2004 and 2009, WHNP published anddistributed more than 100,000 foldout maps listing handmade, homegrown and her-itage sites. The Wisconsin Passage replaces those maps as a more permanent testa-ment to the thriving creative economy in northwest Wisconsin.

There is no commercial advertising in the book. Production was funded bymemberships, in kind and cash donations from businesses and private citizensthrough “Friends of the Passage.” Proceeds from sales of the book will be used toupdate and publish future editions.

Following the initial book launch on August 27 at Northwind Book & Fiberin Spooner, additional launches are planned in each of the 13 counties in the com-ing months. The Wisconsin Passage may be purchased at Northwind Book & Fiber,205 Walnut Street, Spooner, and online at www.heritagepassage.com, where therewill be a list of other retail outlets selling the book. The WNHP is supported in partby the Wisconsin Arts Board. For additional information, call 715.635.9303, oremail [email protected].

32nd Annual Blue & White Pottery Convention To Be Held In East Peoria, IL

Red Wing, MN - The Red Wing Collectors

Society announces today that Aba Luostarinen, a

student potter from Finland, will join Richard

Spiller at the 2013 Convention - Diggin' Red

Wing slated for July 11-13 at Red Wing High

School in Red Wing, MN.

Spiller traveled to Finland and Estonia this

past year. In August 2012,

he participated in the Eco

Ceramics workshop that

brought together ceramic

artists from Latvia, Estonia

and Finland at Kohila in Estonia. Spiller returned in January to

give master class workshops at the HAMK University of Applied

Sciences in Finland and the Estonian Academy of Art - EAA.

While participating in the workshops, Spiller learned that

ceramics students had a program requirement for an internation-

al ceramics experience; he met student Aba Luostarinen, who

was looking for an opportunity. Since his return in January,

Spiller worked with the universities and Luostarinen on creating a

pilot program to Minnesota.

Spiller approached RWCS Executive Director Stacy Wegner about the

possibility of Luostarinen joining his RWCS Convention Hands-On Pottery session

as part of the exchange program. By including Luostarinen, it would give him the

opportunity to expand the Convention session and encompass it with the exchange

program.

“Having Aba join Richard this year to expand the Hands-On Pottery

Experience for our Convention attendees is a ground breaking addition to the

Convention,” said Wegner. “We're excited to be a part of the exchange program.”

“I am very excited to have Aba join me at the RWCS Convention this year

to share Red Wing Pottery with an international student as part of her exchange expe-

rience,” said Spiller.

With Luostarinen's assistance, Spiller's 2013 Convention Hands on Pottery

Experience will be offered to attendees on both Thursday, July 11 and Friday, July

12 at Red Wing High School. Participants in the two-hour session times will have the

opportunity to learn pottery techniques and make their own creation. Following the

Convention, the pieces will be fired in the Anderson Center kiln and

shipped to participants; the cost is $35.

In addition to the Red Wing Collectors Society Convention,

contacts with the Northern Clay Center, Anderson Center and

experience in Spillers studio will make up a five week univer-

sity accredited program to pave the way for future exchange

programs.

Luostarinen, 27, lives in Hämeenlinna, Finland and is a stu-

dent at HAMK University of Applied Sciences. Luostarinen is

finishing her studies as a glass and ceramic designer. Her interest and expe-

rience is in using ecological materials in ceramics. And, like Spiller, she's also

interested in wood and gas firing kilns. More of her work can be seen on

her website: http://abaluostarinen.fi.

Richard Spiller joined the RWCS Convention educational program

last year through a pre-Convention hands-on pottery class at the Anderson

Center and pottery demonstrations at Red Wing High School during the

Convention. The class gave RWCS members the opportunity to apply the Scraffito

(scratching) technique to a crock.

The Red Wing Collectors Society Convention is July 11-13, 2013 at Red

Wing High School in Red Wing. To learn more about the annual Convention, or the

Red Wing Collectors Society, visit http://www.redwingcollectors.org or find them on

Facebook or follow on Twitter.

Lions CLub has been providing dog guides to people who are blind and visually impaired to

enhance their mobility and quality of life. The dogs are specially selected and bred, risen in

foster homes and trained to socialize for one year and then send to Michigan to complete

their training. Maggie Weir directs this program in Door County and has arranged for Leader

dogs and their handlers to volunteer their time to be on site during the show. Maggie and

other puppy handlers, have been rewarded with Thank You letters from all over the world

from the visually impaired who are so happy with their leader dogs. Russell Sunstrom of the

Lions Club, hopes that the puppies being on site will prompt a person or family to become a

much needed handler for one year.
