IRL PRESSJournals in thelife sciencesThis leading international journal is published13 times per year for the European MolecularBiology Organization I EM BO) and providesrapid publication for reports of significantoriginal research in molecular biology and relatedareas
CAB/OS is a new international journal for the lifescientist who wants to make the most of computersEvery quarter it focuses on the biological applicationsof computers, reviewing progress and publishing newapplications and developments
The journal is published twice-monthly (24 issues p a.) and provides rapidpublication for high quality research in nudeic acids, their constituents andanalogues Important papers on the applications of computers to researchon nudeic acids are published and the complete collection of publishedtRNA sequences is included as a supplement with an early issue of eachnew volume
ABC is a twice-monthly digest of commercial news in biotechnology Eachissue contains concise summanes of current news reports on new pro-ducts, new research programmes, nghts issues, research results, fundings, personnel changes and licensing agreements.
Published monthly, Carcinogenesis is one of the foremost journals for allaspects of research leading ultimately to the prevention of cancer. As wellas providing rapid publication for some of the best papers in cancerresearch, the journal also regularly provides a 'Commentary' on the currentstatus and future directions for research in areas germane to the cause andprevention of cancer.
Published monthly. Current Eye Research is the only rapid publication jour-nal for the international eye research community. Important papers arepublished in less than half the time taken by the established journals Thejournal covers a broad area of dinical and basic research encompassing theanatomy, physiology, biophysics, biochemistry, pharmacology, develop-mental biology, microbiology and immunology of the eye.
Published quarterly, Chemical Senses publishes original papers on taste, smell and all aspects of chemoreception induding techniques and thespecific application and development of new methods for investigatingchemoreception and chemosensory structures
Journal of Plankton Research covers both zoo- and phytoplankton inmarine, freshwater and brackish environments. The mam topics covered arethe ecology, physiology, distribution, life history and taxonomy of plankton.

PRESS NOTICE
HAZARD ASSESSMENTCHEMICALS
The Royal Society of Chemistry in conjunctionwith the Institute of Biology will be holding a
symposium entitled 'Hazard Assessment:Chemicals (Validation and Interpretation of Data)
to be held as part of the former's AnnualCongress at the University of Warwick,Coventry, U.K., 8th-11th April, 1986.
It will stress that NOT all data and informationretrieved from the bibliographic data banks andbases is necessarily valid or reliable. Indications
will be given as to the pit-falls and means ofvalidating retrieved information. Eminent
internationally known speakers from BIBRA,EEC, ETAD, IARC, Multinationals, Robens
Institute, RSC, Thames Water, U.K. GovernmentDepartments, United Nations and the Water
Research Centre will describe ways ofinterpreting information to give risk/hazard
assessments as to the effects of chemicals onman, other species, in particular, aquatic
organisms.
Further details will shortly be available from:Mr. M.L. Richardson,
6, Birch Drive, Maple Cross, Rickmansworth,Herts. WD3 2UL, U.K.

Taste,Olfaction, and theCentralNervousSystemEssaysin Honor of Carl PfaffmannDonald W.Pfaff, EditorFrom improving nutrition to understandinghuman behavior, taste and olfaction playimportant roles.
This landmark publication reviews rap-idly advancing research in taste and odorphysiology and its impact on such fields asfood science, psychology, anatomy, and neu-rology. The book comprises invited paperspresented at a special symposium on olfac-tion, taste, and the central nervous systemheld at The Rockefeller University in honorof a major figure in neuroscience, Dr. CariPfaffmann.
The papers describe state-of-the-artresearch in five areas: taste receptors, neuro-physiological coding of taste information, mechanics of behavioral responses to taste, neurophysiological coding of olfactory infor-mation, and olfactory determination of so-cial behaviors'. Among topics discussed arebasic theories of taste, artificial and naturalsweeteners, time as a factor in perception of
flavors, and effects of olfaction on behavior. With contributions from acknowledged
leaders in taste and olfaction research, thistimely volume illuminates a field of growinginterest and importance.
"A book like this has been needed for along time. It is one of the very few sym-posium volumes I have read that has a clearorganization and hangs together....Thebook seems likely to become a classic in thefield."—Richard F.Thompson, Professor ofPsychology, Stanford University
