Theintellectuallosswasequallygreat:countlessmanuscriptswereritualisticallyburntandcenturiesofMuslimlearningweresuppressed.

ButthesackofBaghdadandthefallofGranada,thoughturningpointsinMuslimhistory,cannotreallybeconsideredasthemaincausesforMuslimdecline.TheforcethatplacedMuslimcivilizationinreversegearwasaninternalandconceptualone.

Towardstheendofthe14thcentury,theulama(religiousscholars),who,thankstoal-Ghazzali,wereinapositionofdominance,begantoconceiveofthewrittenwordasanindependentrealmofrepresentationandtruthapartfromlife.Theproliferationofbookshadcreatedadistancebetweenauthorsandthewordsthatcarriedtheirideasacrossspaceandtime.Thetextwasopentoeveryvarietyofinterpretation,irrespectiveofrealfactsandtruth.

Sowhatifagiventextisopentoanumberofinterpretations?Theulamahadtwoconcerns.First,theywereconcernedthattheQur’anwasopentoallkindsofwildinterpretations,notjustbyuntutoredreaders,butalsobytheologicallyunqualifiedprofessionalwriters.Tosomeextent,thiswasagenuineconcerngiventhevarietyofirrationalandexploitativebehaviourthatwasbeingjustifiedonthebasisoftheQur’anandtradition.Butthiswasintimatelylinkedtothesecondandmoreimportantworry:theproliferationofwrittentextshadbeganto

underminetheauthorityandcontrolthattheulamaenjoyedoverboththeMuslimrulersandthemasses.

Ittooktheulamaoverahundredyearstorespondtotheproblem.Theirresponsewasthreefold:

1.Theyreducedtheconceptofilmfrommeaning‘allknowledge’tomeanonly‘religiousknowledge.’

2.Theytransformedtheconceptofijmafrommeaning‘theconsensusofthecommunity’tomean‘theconsensusofthelearned,’i.e.theconsensusoftheulamathemselves.

3.Andtheyclosed‘thegatesofijtihad’:independentreasoningonmattersofreligionwaseffectivelyoutlawed.

ThishadadevastatingeffectonMuslimsociety.Ijtihadthusgavewaytotaqlid(blindimitation);reasoning,speculationandinnovationwerereplacedbyimitation.TheinterpretationoftheQur’anwasfrozeninhistory.Intheabsenceofnewideas,reflectionandunderstandingofchangingcircumstances,Muslimthoughtossifiedandbecametotallyobscurantist.Consequently,Muslimculturelostitsdynamismanddegenerated,whiletheMuslimcommunitywastransformedfromanopentoaclosedsociety.

Thereligiousscholarsdefendedthehighlyprivilegedterritorytheycreatedforthemselveswithgreatvigour.InsharpcontrasttohowrapidlytheMuslimsacquiredpaperfromtheChineseandturneditintoanindustry,theulamamanagedtoresisttheintroductionofprintingpressesinMuslimcountriesfor

nearlythreecenturies.Theyarguedthatmassprintingofbookswouldleadnottotheunderstandingandappreciationofsacredandclassicaltextsbuttotheirmisrepresentationandmisunderstandinginuntutoredhands.By‘forbidding’printing,theulamadeprivedMuslimsocietyofacrucialsourceofoxygen.TheMuslimcountrieswerenowreadytobedevouredbyEuropeanpowers.
