Orbit digital measurement system

Higher performance does not meanhigher costs.

Quality standards in industry andresearch are becoming increasinglytight and demands for cost savings arealso increasing. The upgrade from Orbit2 to Orbit 3 provides the way forward forpresent and future precisionmeasurement or positioning needs, whether on the production line or in thelaboratory.

A system that incorporates morethan one sensor technology willnormally require different sets of signalconditioning electronics and software, with all the problems often associatedwith getting diverse technologies andsoftware to work together.

In recognition to the fact that there isnot a single sensor technology that issuitable for all gauging or positioningapplications, Orbit 3 is not dedicated toa single sensor technology and isdesigned for use with an extensiverange of third party sensors.

The upgrade to the Orbit 3 systemcarries forward all the well provenattributes of Orbit 2 plus essentialadditions to performance at no extracost. (See page 7)

Orbit 3 is still based on a ruggedand well proven RS485 multi-dropnetwork running at 1.5m Baud. Thisenables the very high data speedsrequired for dynamic applications.Special attention has been given to allaspects of screening against electricalinterference to provide good noiseimmunity (conforms to EN61000-6-2),which is essential to ensure reliabledata processing.

All Solartron Metrology sensors andmechanical interfaces have beenrigorously tested to ensure a long andproductive life which coupled withthe Orbit 3 data processing systemleads to less down time, improvedproductivity and lower costof ownership.

A universal truthData is only of true value when it is processed from a reliable source

Unerring data collection + Powerful processing = Rock solid results

3

Unerring data collectionA reliable sensor is essential to anydata processing system. All Orbitbased digital sensors and mechanicalinterfaces are designed to generatereliable data, not just from new but formillions of cycles.

Powerful processingGood original data can be ruined bynoisy signal conditioning and poorimmunity to electrical interference, which in turn affects the repeatabilityof results. Orbit 3 processes andtransmits clean, repeatable data fromsensors at speeds of up to 4,000readings per second.

Rock solid resultsData is only of use if it can be displayedand/or acted upon. Orbit 3 is availablewith a comprehensive range ofDisplay/Controllers or software driversand DLL’s for PC based systems.Ethernet modules will be added to theexisting PCI card, I/O and RS 232modules during 2010 to increasecommunication options to both PC’sand PLC’s.

Gauge probes: spring push

Standard - DP Compact - DZ

Contact Gauging probes very oftenprovide the only cost effectivesolution for a wide range ofmeasuring or positioningapplications in diverse industries.

As with all electromechanicaltransducers, life is of paramountimportance. It is not too difficult toproduce a Gauge Probe that performswell when new, it is considerably moredifficult to produce a probe thatmaintains its performance throughout along working life.

It requires close attention to detailin design and materials as well asconsiderable investment in state ofthe art machines to produce bearings, which are the heart of a gauge probe.

Solartron Metrology has completecontrol in house over all aspects for thedesign and manufacture of a widerange of linear bearing assemblies andsensors.

This is demonstrated very well in theDZ range, where a very short bodylength and increased performance hasbeen made possible due to a uniquesensor being mounted inside a specialbearing.

Whether the application is in thelaboratory or in a manufacturingenvironment, the extensive range ofgauge probes has somethingsuitable for a very wide range ofenvironments.

Customised or special products willalways be considered when there is notan exact fit in our standard productrange.

The Standard DP range of Spring PushProbes has justifiably become theworkhorse of the gauging industry. Veryhigh resolution, excellent linearity andhigh data speed come as standard.Long life precision bearings, and anIP65 rating ensure that probes maintaintheir performance for millions of cycles.

The DZ’s are probably the shortestprobes available on the market with afull 1mm or 2mm calibrated travel.A bearing size normally found only inmuch longer bodies ensures a longlife. The small size coupled toenhanced linearity and resolutionmake them ideal where space is aproblem.

Feather Touch - DTWith very low tip forces coupledwith user selectable options of highresolution and data speed, FeatherTouch Probes are ideal for the gaugingof delicate high precision components.Long life bearings ensure that theperformance of the probes aremaintained through millions of cycles inindustries producing high volumes ofcomponents on short cycle times.

Gauge probes: pneumatic push

Standard range - DP ‘J’ Type - DJ

Pneumatic Probes are ideal for usein automatic gauging applicationsor for accessing details that wouldbe diffi cult or impossible to reachusing conventional spring pushprobes.

With no side loading at the contacttip, Pneumatic probes also ensureexcellent repeatability and long life.

Various component materials anddesigns are affected in different waysby the force applied at the pointof contact at the probe tip. Somematerials such as glass or plastic, forexample, require very low tip forces toavoid deforming the component andcontact tip materials that do not leavea mark. Other applications mayrequire higher tip forces.

The Standard range of PneumaticProbes comes with an IP65 rating toensure a long working life in wet oroily environments. In order to ensure the probe is totallysealed to IP65, actuation is achievedby pressurising the gaiter.

J’ Type probes are similar to StandardPneumatic Probes except thatactuation is by an inbuilt piston. Hightip forces are available but as air isvented through a port close to thefront of the probe, they have a lowerIP rating.

Feather Touch - DT Ultra Feather Touch - UTFeather Touch Probes are designedspecifically for applications where lowtip forces are critical.Air is vented through the shroud at thefront of the probe during actuation, which in turn cleans the bearing. With nogaiter to protect the shaft fromcontamination they are unsuitable foruse in wet or oily conditions.

Ultra Light probes are similar toFeather Touch probes except theyhave a significantly lower movingmass and are capable of tip forces aslow as 0.03N.

Specialist gauging products

Lever probe - DLLever probes are generally used forprecision gauging of components, such as shafts, for profiling but theOrbit compatible Lever Probe is notrestricted to such applications. The narrow body (compared to suchdevices based on dial test indictors)coupled with a gentle touch down to0.05N enables access to difficult toreach details, even on fragilecomponents.

Specialist gauging products are forapplications where a standard pencilstyle probe for various reasonswon’t fi t.

They are primarily motion changers ormechanical interfaces that sit betweenthe component and measuring sensor.

Special care has to be applied inthe design and manufacture of allmechanical interfaces where thecontact point is not in line with or maybe some distance from the sensor.

Unmeasured movement that is oftenseen for example in classic bell armlever type motion changers, is a majorcause of poor gauge R&R.

All specialist gauging products arespecifically designed to ensure longlife and consistent repeatability.

Block Gauges have precision linearbearings with zero clearance whichlimits unmeasured movement andtherefore maintains good repeatability, even when the contact tip is mountedoff centre.

Flexures have no sliding componentswithin the gauge frame and nocontacting moving components withinthe sensor. This means that millions ofcycles are achievable withoutdegradation of performance.

The miniature flexures within MiniProbes are particularly robust on bothaxes of loading.

9

Mini probe - DMThe Mini Probe is a very robustminiature flexure with all the attributesof its bigger brother. It’s particularly useful in all aspects ofbore gauging where high accuracyand durability are required.A range of customer fit contact tipsare available to suit most gaugingapplications.

Flexure - DUFlexures are ideal for very high volumeand high precision applications suchas bearing component gauging. Theyare often the best solution formeasuring moving material, suchas roundness testing, with Orbit set tovery high resolution and fast datatransmission.

Block gauge - DKBlock Gauges make precisionmeasurements of bores and cavities asimple and reliable process. A rangeof springs is available to ensure thattip forces can be maintained with theBlock gauge mounted in any attitude.Pneumatic actuators can be retrofittedfor automatic applications.

1 1 PSIM required per channel.2 The specifications quoted are dependant on the power available from the computer in use.3 Orbit provides three measurement modes. Standard where modules are communicated with on an individual basis. Each module is asked for itsmeasurement data by the controller as required. Buffered where modules are told by the controller to take a series of measurements and store them ininternal module memory. This data is then extracted in one block by the controller when the required measurements have been taken. Dynamic wheremodules take measurements on receipt of a common synchronization pulse sent to the modules from the controller. Each module in turn sends its databack to the controller within a specific time frame. This process continues until the required number of measurements have been taken.

Whether it be PC, laptop or PLC,there is a range of plug-and-gointerfaces for directly connecting anOrbit network to the controller ofyour choice.

Synchronising data

Linear and Angular readings accurately synchronised using an Orbit RotaryEncoder Module and data from linear measuring sensors taken at highspeed with the Orbit Network set in Dynamic Mode.

Orbit multiple sensor technology

Gauging components, such as automotive pistons and con’ rods, withtemperature compensation and weight measurement within the samemeasuring station. Orbit can also accept strain and pressure sensors whererequired. See pages 4 and 15.

Inside diameter gauging

Dynamic Bore Gauging using Mini Probes with Orbit set in Dynamic Modeand resolution set to 0.1µm. See page 12.

Outside diameter gauging

2 probes configured A+B/2 is a common method used to measurediameters. If the centre line of the ball in a ball tip is not perfectly aligned tothe centre line of the component, errors can occur. The type of tip chosenfor a gauging application can have a significant effect on accuracy. A tipwith a knife edge or pin is often a better solution in this type of application. For a selection of tips, see page 34.

Automatic gauging systems

Automatic on line or post process is made possible with pneumatic probesand mechanical Interfaces. See pages 10 and 12.

Measuring angles

The precision measurement of angles requires high resolution + excellentlinearity and repeatability.

Application examples

Con’ Rod weight grading

By using the Orbit system to balance sets of automotive connecting rods, the customer is able to use the same software as the dimensional gaugingsystem. A significant cost reduction can be achieved by reducing thenumber of sensor signal processing systems and the associated software.

Temperature and pressure

Research into the temperature and air pressure in automotive heating andair conditioning systems is made easy with Orbit Analogue Input Modulesand the Excel® support pack.

Daisy chain pressure sensors Measuring the change of the shape of a structure

Measuring the change of the shape of a structure and its recovery after beingstressed is a common problem. The Orbit multi drop data acquisition systemcan take readings from a mix of Displacement, Strain, Pressure andTemperature sensors.

Mechanical interfaces

Flexures have the best overall performance for contact measurementof moving material. Linear forces through the flexure and no slidingcomponents within the flexure help to ensure excellent performance and avery long life. See page 12.

Low tip forces

Tip force is critical when gaugingfragile or flexible components.

For low and very low tip forceprobes and special tips, seepages 8 and 10.
