September 1963 brought the opening of our new cafeteria. There were mingled feelings of joy and sadness among LHS stude ms. The good old days of "Footlongs" and milkshakes at "Dee 's" were replaced by a more balanced diet prepared by our school dieticians.

Faculty members White, Fletcher , Haines, Kennedy, Lackey, and Greer f111d ume to share ideas as they lunch together.

6

LHS CAFE

TERIA OPENS

Students seem to be taking their lunch

time more serwusly than their studies.

Homer Wright sho\\.'S us that the cafeteria IS a place for cra1mmng studies as \\'ell as food. Tom

Harless, Jimmy Pigg, Phillip Dials, and Eddie Walton look on 1n amazement.

Another first this year .... as a SCARLACK Part) ,,hich was held m Septem

ber. All students who subscribed to the

19G4 SC RLACK were given the priVl

kge of staying in the Gym to visit and

autograph their 1963 SCARLACKS on

the day the yearbooks arrived. The

SCARLACK Staff was pleased to report

that a total of 173 SCARLACKS were

sold during the parry.

1963 SCAR

Students find 1963 SCARLACK interesting. Some sa1d that it's the best one yet!

ADMINISTRATION

• 'No bubble is so iridescent or floats longer than that blown by the successful teacher."

••• Sir William Osler

Always a "Highlight'' of any year at lliS is a chance to listen to a few well-chosen words by our Superintendent William A. Cheek. Being a lover of poetry and one who can recite by the hour, Mr. Cheek has always inspired us with his messages.

We have chosen to quote from one of his favorite poems, "A Psalm of Life," by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

Life is reall Life is earnest! And the grave is not its goal;

Dust thou art, to dust returnest, was not spoken of the soul.

Art is long, and Time is fleeting, And our hearts, though stout and brave,

Still, like muffled drums, are beating Funeral marches to the grave.

Trust no Future, howe'er pleasant! Let the dead Past bury its dead!

Act, act in the living present! Heart within, and God o'erheadl

Lives of great men all remind us We can make our lives sublime,

And, departing, leave behind us Footprints on the sands of time.

Let us, then, be up and doing, With a heart for any fate;

Still achieving, still pursuing, Learn to labour and to wait.

PAUL WRIGHT, PRINCIPAL

A MESSAGE TO THE CLASS OF 1964

May this year bring all of you the joy you anticipated, and the success for which you have worked. As you move

out into the life you have planned, may you have the satisfaction that comes from a job well done. This year marks the end of an era full of growth for you and the beginning of a life of independence and creativity.

21

Mr. James I. Cheek, acting guidance counselor, and Miss Violet Wright, secretary to Principal Paul Wright, are two of the busiest people on the LHS campus.

Mrs. Nancy B. Cheek keeps our free textbooks available and supplies us with our chalk and erasers. She also helps to quiet our "hunger pangs" at the TenMinute Break every morning.

Miss Wright in her duties .

The road for the 1 63-64 Louisa H1gh School Basketball Team \-:as a long, rocky one as they compiled a 2-23 record . Pla) mg one of the toughest schedules ·n Eastern Kentucky, the Bulldogs were hampered great!) by inexpenence. Wah only three senton> on the squad, the Bulldogs fell victlm to mistakes wh1ch were capitalized upon by the more seasoned opposmon.

Wnh only three seniors--Andy York, Bill Cheek, and Roger Childers--and two JUniors--Marvin Sands and Hal Johnson--head Coach Hershel Walsh m h1s first year at the reins had to rel) upon youth and mcxperience in his quest for victory. Starting most of the season for the Bulldogs \'>'ere sophomores "Rocky" Vanover ami Mikl! Fawbush. Vanover had a very fmc sophomore season being named to both All-North Eastern Kentucky Conference

regular season and tournament teams. With so many young players on the squad, the out

look for the commg .easons is very promising as freshman, Herbie Lemaster and eighth graders Roger Vanover sav; enough acuon to earn varsity letters, and several sophomores--Bob Branham, Joe Rice , and John hellcroft-p.cked up much valuable game expenencc.
