Library card holders can check out and download Overdrive digital books onto Kindle Fires and Kindle HDs. This set of instrucons will walk you through the Overdrive set up process and get you started reading books on your Kindle tablet device. Step 1: amazon Account

When you initially purchased your Kindle, you went through a registration process and created an ama-

zon account. Have your amazon login information ready, you will use this later. If you don’t already have

an account, go to amazon.com and sign up for free.

Pierce County Library System subscribes to a collection of eBooks and digital audiobooks from Overdrive, a

distributor of digital books to libraries. Library card holders can check out and download Overdrive digital

books onto Kindle Fires and Kindle HDs. This set of instructions will walk you through the Overdrive set up

process and get you started reading books on your Kindle tablet device.

Please Note: Currently, depending on the file format of the eBooks, there are two different ways to find

library titles for your Kindle Fire or HD. Both searching techniques are outlined in this guide.

Step 2- Create an Adobe ID Account

To read ePub or PDF formatted eBooks on your Kindle you will need to set up an Adobe ID account.

Go to www.adobe.com. In the top right

hand corner of the page is a small “Sign

In” link.

Click on the blue “Don’t have an Adobe ID?” link. Fill out the form and press the “Create”

button. Make sure to record your email and

password for future use.

Step 2: Get the App

Download and install the Overdrive Media Console app to your Kindle.

Tap on “Apps” in the main

menu of your Kindle.

Tap on the “Store” icon.

Click on the green

“Free” button. Tap the “confirm” button.

The Overdrive app will begin

downloading.

Step 3 - Authorize

The Overdrive app icon will

now appear in your home

menu/carousel. Tap to open. You can also open the

Overdrive app from the

apps menu.

The Overdrive app defaults to

display your Bookshelf.

Tap on the settings icon to view

more options.

Enter “overdrive “into the

search bar to locate the

app.

Tap on “App Settings”. Enter your Adobe ID email and password and

tap “Authorize”. Your Adobe account ID is now

saved. Press the menu button and return to

your “Bookshelf”.

Step 4 - Add the Library

In order to access digital titles available through Pierce County Libraries you will need to “add” the Li-

brary to the Overdrive app.

Press the menu button on

your device and then select

“Get Books”.

Select “Add a Library”.

Search for “Pierce County

Library”.

Choose your library

from the list.

Tap the outline of the star

to the left of the name of

the library.

The star will turn yellow,

your library is now saved.

Step 5: Checking out Kindle formatted eBooks

Depending on the file format of the eBooks, there are two different ways to find library titles for your

Kindle Fire or HD.

To search for Kindle formatted books (AZW), you must exit the Overdrive app on your device and go to

the Web (browser).

Go to www.piercecountylibrary.org

Under the “BOOKS/MATERIALS” tab, click on

“Downloadable Books and Music”.

Under E-Books, click on “Overdrive”.

Click on the blue “Overdrive Digital Home” link.

Browse titles using the options on the left hand side of the page, or do a specific search with the search

bar.

Click the box next to “Only show titles with available copies”, to find books that are available to check out

right now.

Click on “Custom Search” to conduct an even more detailed search, including limiting results by format.

When browsing the catalog, look for the Kindle icon to identify the correct file format.

Pay close attention to the “Use On:” note under the Kindle icon.

Power & Beauty will download to your device and appear in your home menu/carousel.

Once you have found a book you wish to check out click on “Currently Available - Add to Cart”.

Sometimes the title is checked out by another customer and not available at this time. Click on “Place a

Request” and submit an email address to place a hold and be notified when the title becomes available.

Review the items in your cart and proceed to checkout.

Enter your library card number and PIN (last 4 digits of your phone number).

Review and confirm the title(s) you wish to checkout.

Click on the “Get for Kindle” button. You will be redirected to Amazon’s website.

Click on the yellow “Get library book” button.

If you haven’t already, you will be prompted to login to your amazon account.

Amazon asks which device you want the eBook sent to. Choose the correct Kindle device and hit contin-

ue.

Your library eBook will begin downloading.

The book will now show up in the home

menu/carousel on your Kindle.

Tap the cover image to start reading.

Step 6 - Checking out ePUB or PDF formatted eBooks and MP3 Audiobooks

Open the Overdrive app on your Kindle.

Once you’ve located a

title you wish to check

out, tap the “add to cart

button”. Enter your library card

and pin number.

Your device will open up the

Overdrive mobile catalog.

From here you can search and

check out for MP3 audiobooks,

ePub and PDF formatted

eBooks.

Tap the name of the li-

brary that you added

earlier.

Select “Proceed to

Checkout”.

Tap on the Get Books icon, from

your menu.

Tap the “Download”

button.

Tap “Confirm check

out”. Return to your Overdrive

“Bookshelf”. Tap the title to

start listening or reading!

Tap the “Patron Account”

button and enter your li-

brary card number and

PIN number.

Choose the “Items Out”

option from the list.

You can also add books that you have previously checked out on another device. In the Overdrive app on

your Kindle, open up the mobile catalog via the “Get Books” menu.

Select the “Download”

button for the title(s) you

wish to download.

Step 7: Return & Delete

You can delete an eBook from the Overdrive app at any time; note that after 21 days (3 weeks) a book

will still appear in your library but remain inactive.

To return or delete a book in the Overdrive app, tap the plus sign to the

right of the title, and select the “Return/Delete” button.

If you select “Return and Delete” the book will be no longer checked out to you and will be deleted from

your device.

If you select “Delete”, the book will be removed from the device, but it will remain checked out to you.

You may download the title again from your Overdrive library account, if you have days remaining on

your loan period.

To return or delete a book in the home menu/carousel, tap and hold on the cover image.

Choose “Remove from Device”.

Additional Info:

It is possible to return your library eBook before it is due,

send it to an additional device, or transfer eBooks via USB

from the Amazon website.

Log in to your Amazon account.

Hover over the “Your Account” in the right hand

corner of the page.

From the dropdown menu, click on “Manage

your Kindle”.

All books that you have purchased through amazon or checked out from the library are listed here.

Hover your mouse over the actions button for the particular title you wish to modify.
