Indian Creek Recreation Area

“Isn’t it beautiful?” That was Brenda Cole’s reaction when asked how she was enjoying her first visit to Indian Creek. “It’s so beautiful here with the water. At 5:30 this morning, the stars were so bright,” she added.

Some may call it a hidden gem. Indian Creek Recreation Area in Woodworth, La. is a camper’s dream.

“We were going to other camp sites but they were not being maintained well. A guy I work with comes fishing here and that’s how we found out about Indian Creek,” said Rayburn Cole. He and his wife, Brenda, were visiting from Centerpoint, La.

While Brenda and Rayburn say they are enjoying their relaxing stay, the next time they come, they plan to bring their boat. “I understand why people enjoy coming out here to fish,” said Rayburn. Bass, catfish and white perch can be caught in the reservoir.

Indian Creek Recreation Area has gotten a facelift of sorts over the past few months. “The campsite

needed to be freshened up,” said park director Peter Rudesill. “We’ve painted, done a lot of

cleaning, added a laundromat, and added a specific area where you can clean fish.”

Rudesill says security was also a top priority. The park now features a security gate. And for those guests who utilize technology, access to Wi-Fi was added throughout the park.

“I drive through the park and

people stop me to tell me that they are noticing the improvements,” said Rudesill.

The park features a beach, boat launch, nature trails, picnic tables and playground equipment for children to enjoy. There are also a limited number of canoes and paddle boats available for rent on a first come first serve basis.

Pesky gnats causing nuisance around state The recent flooding has exacerbated gnats in certain areas of the state. There have been many complaints these gnats are affecting chickens and other poultry. Here’s what you need to know if you are dealing with these pesky insects:

• Buffalo Gnat or Black Fly comes from family of blood sucking flies• Adult flies are small

insects about 2-5mm in length with a convex, shiny thorax that gives them a humpbacked, gnat-like appearance• Color ranges from black to gray to yellow and adults have broad clear wings• Breed in running water• Humans and domestic animals may be attacked• Eyes, ears, nostrils, wrists, and all exposed parts of the body may be attacked by the flies

• Bite can cause extreme pain, itching, and swelling due an active allergin caused from the bite• Can kill chickens and livestock as heavy swarms attack them causing stampeding, trampling and even suffocation as gnats clog respiratory tracts• Livestock and poultry can also be killed from toxemia caused by the bites or from anaphylactic shock from the allergin• Severe debilitation from

blood loss can also occur• Gnats are daytime biters so keep animals indoors or in enclosures to prevent bites• Provide screen-wire enclosures that block gnats for poultry• Apply mosquito and biting fly control labeled for animals directly to chickens• Adult gnats only live 4-5 weeks and should go away in the heat of summer

Excessive rains that brought historic floods to many parts of Louisiana last month will cost farmers at least $10 million in lost revenues and damage to their crops and livestock.

The impact includes the costs of replanting flooded fields, potential crop yield losses and having to relocate livestock herds, said LSU AgCenter economist Kurt Guidry, who has been surveying the damage around Louisiana.

At least six inches of rain fell between March 7 and 11 in much of Louisiana, with some areas receiving more than 20 inches of rain. Though floodwaters have mostly receded from the heaviest-hit parishes in northern Louisiana, that water

is now creating issues farther south in places that didn’t flood when the rain first hit, including Franklin and Catahoula parishes, Guidry said.

President Barack Obama has declared 36 parishes, most in northern and central Louisiana, as disaster areas eligible for federal assistance.

Guidry’s preliminary estimate of flooding damage to the agriculture industry is $10 million to $15 million, but that number is likely to grow.

“This estimate is still evolving as more information is collected and decisions are made on the amount of acreage that will need to be replanted,” he said.

Cornfields in north Louisiana saw

some of the greatest damage. As many as 55,000 acres of corn were flooded and will have to be replanted.

“Fortunately, for most of the major row crops in Louisiana, planting hadn’t begun to any significant measure,” Guidry said. “The impact for these crops to this point has been disruption of field preparations, which could result in planting delays that could ultimately impact yields.”

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has reported that several Louisiana commodities are behind the five-year average pace for planting and harvesting. Only about half of Louisiana’s corn acres were planted as of April 3, while 82 percent of acres had been planted by that

time on average in the past five years.Rice and grain sorghum planting, as

well as wheat harvest, are behind the five-year average too. Planting delays may force some farmers to switch acreage — especially corn acres — to other commodities, Guidry said.

At least 400 head of beef cattle died in the flooding, and livestock operations are facing increased costs associated with relocating their herds and losing available land for grazing, Guidry said. At least 1,500 bales of stored hay and 2,000 acres of fencing were also lost in floodwaters.

AgCenter personnel have been assisting in damage assessments and other recovery efforts, he said.
