wenty-five year old Walker Haase has a job to do. He’s collecting a

horse from the pasture where he was graz-ing and bringing him to his stall. His moth-er, Mary Ann, says working with horses

gives Walker, who is developmentally dis-abled, an opportunity to feel like he is ac-complishing something.

“Every Wednesday night he writes the name of every horse he will take care of

the next day,” said Mary Ann. “These moments in his life make him whole. Every parent wants their kids to be happy and to have good experiences.”

New Heights Therapeutic Riding Center in Folsom, La. is Walker’s happy place. Walker has sensory and attention is-sues caused by Fragile X Syn-drome. Walker does both recre-ational and therapeutic riding at New Heights. “It’s helped with his anxiety. His attention issues are huge, but here he is focused and motivated. That carries over into other areas of his life where he has developed a real work ethic,” added Mary Ann.

New Heights is a non-profit organization recognized as a Premier Center by the Profes-sional Association of Thera-peutic Horsemanship Interna-tional (PATH). It is the only

fully accessible riding center in Louisiana which provides equine-assisted activities and therapies. New Heights serves adults and children with cognitive, physical, and emotional challenges.

An “incredible gift to the community” is what Walker’s mom calls New Heights, and she’s not the only one who feels that way.

Katherine Racine’s five year old daughter Ruthie has Cerebral Palsy. For the past year, she has received Hippotherapy which helps her with balance and muscle toning. “Be-fore, she could not stand on her feet very long, but now she can stand longer and sit up straighter,” said Katherine. “Of all the therapy she’s had in the past five years, this is the place where she’s shown the most im-provement. I can’t put a price on that.”

New Heights started in 1998 when a phys-ical therapist who owned horses used them to treat her patients. “Being a non-profit, we used to move from location to location until two very generous benefactors donated the eight acres in Folsom where we are located today,” said Kim Clinard who serves as op-erations manager.

New Heights operates primarily on do-nations and currently serves about 60 rid-ers. It has a few full-time employees which include an occupational therapist, a PATH certified instructor and barn/herd coordina-

tor plus other part-time staff. The facility also relies heavily on volunteers who pro-vide support to the riders.

“Right now we have nine amazing horses on loan to us from generous owners. These horses come from all kinds of backgrounds. They’re older horses. One is a former show horse, an ex-barrel racer, a thoroughbred race horse and a very large hunter jumper who is just a love bug,” said Kim. “He loves to give hugs and receive them!”

“We see the beauty of what this facility does for those involved and what the ben-efits are,” said Ashley Richerand.

One sweet horse on loan is from lo-cal business owners Frank Richerand and his daughter, Ashley. Frank is also a New Heights board member.

For Ashley, New Heights has a special place in her heart. “I have a 15-year-old daughter who is disabled so helping those with special needs is a priority. She even volunteers there,” said Ashley.

The Richerand’s also have a love of hors-es as clearly expressed in their coffee shop, Giddy Up, which is equestrian themed. “I thought the name was fitting. You get a giddy up when you drink coffee and you’re also in horse country here in Folsom,” she

Baton Rouge, La. (Aug. 13, 2018) - Louisiana agricultural producers and handlers who obtained USDA Organic certification or recertification may qualify for reimbursement of their costs through a cost-share rebate program, Louisiana Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain, D.V.M., said.

The rebates are available for

USDA Organic certification and recertification expenses incurred between Oct. 1, 2017 and Sept. 30, 2018. The program will provide reimbursements of up to 75 percent of certification and recertification costs, or up to $750 per year per certification category.

“Earning the USDA Organic certification can be a costly and lengthy process,” Strain said.

“This cost-share program is one way producers can offset these expenses.”

Applications must be received by close of business (4:30 p.m.) Oct. 1, 2018.

The program is funded through USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA).

The 2018 cost-share applications are available at www.LDAF.la.gov. Reimbursements

will be on a first-come, first-served basis, based on receipt of the completed application packet, until available funding is exhausted.

Agriculture Practice/Good Handling Practices (GAP/GHP) audits, as well as, GAPs Harmonized audits (with or without the Global addendum).

GAP audits are a voluntary for hire service that 29certifies a producer’s efforts to provide safe, quality product free from contamination to the consumer.

from PTSD and disabilities. When you see the connection these children and veterans have with these animals, it makes their lives better,” he added.

Frank and Ashley are planning a 5k run fundraiser called “Giddy Up to New Heights” in the fall. New Heights also holds

two fundraisers each year hosted by David Fennelly and Carlos Sanchez. A fall golf tournament will be held in October and a spring garden party is scheduled for April.

One horse on loan to New Heights is from local business owners Frank Richerand and his daughter, Ashley. The fa-ther-daughter partners own the equestrian-themed coffee shop, Giddy Up. Frank is also a New Heights board member.
