INTRODUCTION

The geologic map of the Pomeroy area covers six 7.5-minute quadrangles: Stember Creek, Potter Hill, Alpowa Ridge, Peola, Pomeroy, and Rose Springs (Fig. 1). Mapping of the six quadrangles was completed between 1986 and 1992. The first four quadrangles were mapped by P.R. Hooper, and the Pomeroy and Rose Springs quadrangles were mapped by B. A. Gillespie and P.R. Hooper in 1991 and 1992. The area lies immediately west of the area covered by the geologic map of the Clarkston 15-minute quadrangle (Hooper and others, 1985), and the southeast comer of this map is adjacent to the northwest comer of the geologic map of southeastern Asotin County (Reidel and others, 1992).

The objectives and type of mapping varied among these quadrangles. In the Stember Creek, Potter Hill, Alpowa Ridge, and Peola quadrangles the Grande Ronde Basalt was broken down into its magnetostratigraphic units on the basis of magnetic polarity measured with a field fluxgate magnetometer and confirmed by coring critical outcrops. The top three Grande Ronde flows are also distinguished chemically (Hooper, in press). The Grande Ronde has not been subdivided on the Pomeroy and Rose Springs quadrangles, where the main purpose of the mapping was to use the more easily recognized Eckler Mountain and Wanapum flows to determine the complex fault patterns reported earlier by Swanson and others (1979) and Beeson and others (1985).

Field identification of flows was confirmed by more than 500 X-ray fluorescence analyses for major and trace elements in the Washington State University Geoanalytical Laboratory (Appendix). The use of chemical composition to distinguish individual flows in southeast Washington is discussed in Hooper (in press).

Over most of the mapped area Quaternary surficial deposits are divided only into alluvium along the floors of the deeper valleys and loess on the upper slopes. Colluvium is separated from the alluvium on the Stember Creek quadrangle, and one large area of coarse colluvium is mapped on the northwest side of the town of Pomeroy.

Stratigraphic Nomenclature

The stratigraphic nomenclature used in this report is based on the formal nomenclature of Swanson and others (1979). However, it is modified to accommodate evidence from our current work that shows the basalt of Shumaker Creek of the original Eckler Mountain Member is, in fact, younger than the youngest Frenchman Springs Member flow, but older than the flows of the Roza Member. The modified nomenclature is discussed in Hooper and Hawkesworth (1993) and Hooper and others (1995) and shown in Figure 2.

POMEROY 7.5-MINUTE QUADRANGLE, WASHINGTON 3

DESCRIPTIONS OF MAP UNITS

Sedimentary Deposits and Rocks

Quaternary Sedimentary Deposits

Qz Mazama ash (Holocene)--Thin deposits of ash in valley bottoms, typically reworked and mixed with loess. Erupted from Mount Mazama (Crater Lake, OR) about 6,600 yr B.P. Occurs throughout the map area, but shown only in the Stember Creek quadrangle.

Qa Alluvium (Quatemary)--Varied composition, chiefly reworked loess and basalt but includes alluvial fans, local colluvium, and reworked Mazama ash deposits. Typically occurs along the bottoms of valleys.

Qc Colluvium (Quaternary)--Mixtures of loess and angular to subrounded blocks of basalt at the base of steep valley sides. Distinguished from alluvium only in the Stember Creek quadrangle and at an unusually large and coarse deposit on the steep slope immediately north of Pomeroy.

Qf Alluvial fans (Quaternary)--Stream deposits with variable composition, from nearly pure reworked loess to mixtures of angular to rounded clasts of basalt and loess, rarely containing reworked pebbles and cobbles of interbeds or gravel deposits. Present where tributaries enter major drainages.

QI Palouse Formation (Quaternary)--Loess, predominantly quartz and feldspar grains derived from the southwest throughout the Quaternary; thins rapidly to the south on the north-facing slopes of the Blue Mountains. Where the underlying basalt shows through the thin loess cover, the map shows the basalt unit.

Tertiary Sedimentary Deposits and Rocks

Ts Sedimentary units between flows of the Miocene Columbia River Basalt Group-The only substantial sedimentary unit occurs along the eastern margin of the Potter Hill quadrangle where thick sediments of the Sweetwater interbed lie within (in the case of invasive basalt flows) and between the Umatilla and Asotin Members (Gaylord and others, 1989). This interbed represents the western limit of the Lewiston basin. At other locations in the eastern part of the map area sediments occur between the Priest Rapids and Roza Members, between Grande Ronde R2 and Priest Rapids, between the basalt of Stember Creek and Priest Rapids, between Stember Creek and Roza, and between Roza and Shumaker Creek.

Tertiary Volcanic Rocks

Columbia River Basalt Group (Waters, 1961; Swanson and others, 1979; Tolan and others, 1989)

Saddle Mountains Basalt

More than 20, mainly small-volume (less than 800 km3), highly radiogenic flows erupted between

14.5 and 6.0 Ma (Carlson, 1984; Hooper and Hawkesworth, 1993).

4 OPEN FILE REPORT 96-5

Tern Elephant Mountain Member (Miocene) (Waters, 1955; Hooper and Swanson, 1990)-An aphyric to microphyric flow with microphenocrysts of plagioclase and smaller grains of clinopyroxene and olivine set in a glassy to fine-grained matrix; highest (>3.5%) Ti02 content of the Columbia River basalts (Hooper, in press); filled a deep south-trending channel along the east side of the Potter Hill quadrangle and locally overflowed the channel on either side to form a thin veneer of vesicular basalt on the surf ace of the northwestern comer of the Lewiston basin (northeastern comer of this map) (Hooper and others, 1985). Transitional to normal magnetic polarity (Choiniere and Swanson, 1979). Dated at 10.5 Ma (McKee and others, 1977). A feeder dike occurs to the south-southwest of the map area, near Troy, Oregon (Ross, 1978; Stoffel, 1984; Hooper and Swanson, 1990).

Twc Weissenfels Ridge Member, basalt of Cloverland (Miocene) (Camp, 1976; Swanson and others, 1979; Hooper and others, 1985; Hooper and Swanson, 1990; Reidel and others, 1992)-A finegrained to glassy flow; extends from the western edge of the Lewiston basin (Rockpile Creek quadrangle) (Hooper and others, 1985) to the extreme eastern edge of the Potter Hill quadrangle. Normal magnetic polarity. Dikes are present in the Fields Spring (Reidel and others, 1992), Asotin Creek, and Rockpile Creek quadrangles (Hooper and others, 1985).

Ta Asotin Member (Miocene) (Camp, 1976; Swanson and others, 1979; Reidel and Fecht, 1981, 1987; Hooper, 1985; Hooper and others, 1985; Hooper and Swanson, 1990)-A dense aphyric flow with small fresh olivine crystals. Like the basalt of Cloverland, this flow filled the Lewiston basin; present along the eastern edge of the Potter Hill quadrangle. Normal magnetic polarity (Choiniere and Swanson, 1979).

Tu Umatilla Member (Miocene) (Laval, 1956; Schmincke, 1964, 1967; Swanson and others, 1979; Hooper and Swanson, 1990)-Exceptionally fine grained flows distinguished by their high Ba content (2,500-3,700 ppm) and that typically erode to large rounded boulders of dense aphyric basalt; in the map area consists of two flows (Hooper, 1981), basalt of Umatilla and basalt of Sillusi, that are not differentiated; restricted to the eastern edge of the Potter Hill quadrangle and an isolated outcrop immediately northeast of Pomeroy. Normal magnetic polarity (Swanson and others, 1979). Puffer Butte, in the Fields Spring quadrangle, is the main vent for this member; it is fed by a dike exposed in the Grande Ronde River canyon below Puffer Butte (Reidel and others, 1992).

Wanapum Basalt (Swanson and others, 1979; Tolan and others, 1989)

As redefined (Hooper and others, 1995), the Wanapum Basalt includes three large-volume (1,300-6,400 km3

) members (Priest Rapids [Lolo flow], Roza, and Frenchman Springs) and two smaller flows (Shumaker Creek and Lookingglass [does not occur in the map area]). The larger units are chemically uniform, characterized by high FeO (total iron expressed as FeO) and Ti02 contents, moderately high P20 5 content, but usually lower Si02 contents than flows of Grande Ronde Basalt or the more evolved members of the Saddle Mountains Basalt (Hooper, in press). Individual flows are distinguished in the field by grain size, phenocryst assemblage, weathering patterns, and stratigraphic position, and chemically by Zr and P20 5 concentrations (Hooper, in press). The two smaller flows are single, aphyric, more siliceous flows. Erupted between 14.5 and 15.6 Ma.

Tpr Priest Rapids Member, basalt of Lolo (Miocene) (Bingham and Grolier, 1966; Swanson and others, 1979; Hooper and Swanson, 1990)-A medium-grained flow with microphenocrysts of plagioclase and olivine. Occurs only in the northeast quarter of the Potter Hill quadrangle. Reversed magnetic polarity. Numerous feeder dikes occur about 100 km to the east in the

POMEROY 7.5-MINUTE QUADRANGLE, WASHINGTON 5

Clearwater embayment ofldaho (Camp, 1981; Tolan and others, 1989; Hooper and Swanson, 1990).

Tr Roza Member (Miocene) (Mackin, 1961; Bingham and Grolier, 1966; Swanson and others, 1979)-Characterized by large (more than 1 cm long) individual plagioclase phenocrysts in a dense fine-grained matrix. Although six flows with subtle chemical differences have been recognized in this member (Martin, 1989), they are not distinguished on this map. The Roza is the top flow over a large part of the mapped area, except in the east where it is overlain by younger flows and in the southwest, where it is absent. Transitional to reversed magnetic polarity. Potter Hill is a major Roza vent; other vents are Big and Little Buttes to the southeast in the Anatone and Harlow Ridge quadrangles (Swanson and others, 1975, 1980; Reidel and others, 1992). A well-defined north-northwest aligned swarm of Roza dikes underlies this line of vents and extends south into northeastern Oregon and north to and beyond the Snake River (Swanson and others, 1975, 1979, 1980; Martin, 1989; Hooper and Swanson, 1990; Reidel and others, 1992).

Tsh Shumaker Creek Member (Miocene)-Pale-colored aphyric flow; distinguished by its high (1,000-1,250 ppm) Ba and (0.94-1.00%) P20 5 contents (Hooper, in press) from both Grande Ronde flows, which it physically resembles, and other flows of the Wanapum Basalt. The flow forms a south-trending tongue along the western margins of the Peola and Alpowa Ridge quadrangles and ends abruptly in Brinkman Gulch, just southeast of Pomeroy. Normal magnetic polarity. A feeder dike is exposed in Joseph Creek canyon in the Fields Spring quadrangle (Reidel and others, 1992) near the type locality southeast of this mapped area.

The Shumaker Creek was originally placed in the Eckler Mountain Member of the Wanapum Basalt (Swanson and others, 1979; Hooper and Swanson, 1990), but it is now raised to member status in the Wanapum, lying between the Frenchman Springs and Roza Members (Hooper and others, 1995).

Tfly Frenchman Springs Member, basalt of Lyons Ferry (Miocene) (Swanson and others, 1979; Beeson and others, 1985)-Coarse-grained, aphyric flow that weathers in a characteristic "elephant hide" or "onion skin" fashion; confined to the northwest comer of the mapped area. Normal magnetic polarity (Swanson and others, 1979). The flow is the youngest of the six flows of this member recognized by Beeson and others (1985).

Tfsg Frenchman Springs Member, basalt of Sentinel Gap (Miocene) (Beeson and others, 1985)-Aphyric to microphyric flow; extends from the west onto the western margin of the Peola and Alpowa Ridge quadrangles. Normal magnetic polarity.

Eckler Mountain Basalt (Swanson and others, 1979; Hooper and Hawkesworth, 1993; Hooper and others, 1995)

As redefined in Hooper and others (1995) the Eckler Mountain Basalt is now reduced to two members, the Dodge and the Robinette Mountain.

Ted Dodge Member (Miocene) (Swanson and others, 1979; Swanson and Wright, 1983; Hooper and Swanson, 1990; Hooper and others, 1995)-Very coarse plagioclase-phyric flow with a characteristic yellow "elephant hide" weathering; distinguished chemically by its low Si02, Ti02, and P20 5

contents (Hooper, in press). Normal magnetic polarity. A single flow of Dodge composition is confined to the western half of the map area, extending from the Snake River through Pomeroy south to near Elgin in Oregon. Feeder dikes for this flow cross the Blue Mountains immediately to the south (Swanson and Wright, 1983; Hooper and Swanson, 1990; Hooper and others, 1995).

6 OPEN FILE REPORT 96-5

Outside the map area at least five chemically distinguishable eruptions of Dodge magma are recognized, of which that in the present map area is by far the largest in volume (Hooper and others, 1995). Dikes of Dodge composition are known to the southeast in the main Grande Ronde dike swarm (Reidel and others, 1992) and farther south in Oregon (Ross, 1978).

Grande Ronde Basalt (Waters, 1961; Wright and others, 1973; Swanson and others, 1979; Reidel, 1983; Mangan and others, 1986; Reidel and others, 1989)

Numerous aphyric flows with high (52-57%) Si02 content but moderate incompatible element contents (Hooper, 1981, in press). The formation is divided into four magnetostratigraphic units (Swanson and others, 1979), of which the top three are exposed in the area mapped. Current mapping shows that many of the Mg-rich flows at the top of this formation can be distinguished chemically from each other (Hooper, in press). The units were erupted between 16.5 and 15.6 Ma.

Tg Grande Ronde Basalt, undivided (Miocene)-The Grande Ronde Basalt is not subdivided in the Pomeroy and Rose Springs quadrangles.

MzPzm

Upper flows of normal magnetic polarity

Tgsc Basalt of Stember Creek (Miocene) (Hooper, 1986)-A single fine-grained flow with high MgO, low Ti02 and P20 5, and Cr between 40 and 80 ppm (Hooper, in press) in the northeast part of the map area, but represented by many flows of similar composition to the west and south. Vent areas in the Potter Hill and Stember Creek quadrangles. Tentatively correlated with the Sentinel Bluffs unit of Reidel and others (1989).

Tgfs Basalt of Fields Spring (Miocene) (Reidel and others, 1989, 1992)-A slightly coarser than average, MgO-rich flow with low (approx. 1.1 %) Ti02 content. At least three geographically isolated flows with indistinguishable compositions occur in the eastern half of the map area, each apparently derived from a different segment of dike that may represent a single fissure.

Upper flows of reversed magnetic polarity

TgR2 (Miocene) A thick (>800 ft) sequence of flows of relatively siliceous composition. The uppermost, the Meyer Ridge, has distinctive high MgO and low Si02 contents. Present throughout the map area.

Lower flows of normal magnetic polarity

TgNl (Miocene) The lowest group of Grande Ronde flows exposed in the map area; rich in MgO but low ( <40 ppm) Cr content; present along the bottoms of the deepest valleys in the southern and northeastern portions of the map area.

Mesozoic and/or Paleozoic Metasedimentary and Metavolcanic Rocks

Metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks (Mesozoic and/or Paleozoic )-A small outcrop of basement rock is mapped by Swanson and others (1980) in the southwest comer of the map area.

POMEROY 7.5-MINUTE QUADRANGLE, WASHINGTON 7

STRUCTURE

The map area contains a series of vertical faults which trend northeast to north-northeast. In the northwest these include the northern end of the Hite fault, which has normal displacement down to the west, whereas the faults that cross the eastern part of the map have downthrow to the east. The result is a broad north-northeast trending horst structure which is illustrated in the cross section (on Plate 1). These faults also show an en echelon pattern in plan view, with a geometry that implies left- lateral strain in all cases. Slickensides are rare, but good examples were seen at the northern end of the Hite fault exposed in cliffs excavated behind Pomeroy Hospital where one of the many small splinter faults exhibits horizontal slickensides. Vertical to steep slickensides have not been observed.

The structural evidence cannot be uniquely interpreted. The amount of left-lateral strike-slip displacement is impossible to measure in the essentially horizontal flow units. Given the clear left-lateral strike-slip strain pattern and the presence of horizontal or near-horizontal slickensides, one can only suspect that the vertical displacement observed is the result of much larger near-horizontal displacements. The structural geometry requires left-lateral displacement at the northern end of the fault on the eastern edge of the map, which swings into the east-trending Vista (reverse) fault (Camp, 1976; Hooper and others, 1985), the main component of the "Lewiston structure" (Hooper and others, 1995). Again, horizontal slickensides are ubiquitous throughout the Lewiston structure.
