Dr. Wazir Ishmael

“There’s no greater challenge and there is no greater honor than to be in public service”

– Condoleezza Rice, Former Secretary of State

Leading up to Public Service Recognition Week (May 1-7, 2022), 265 City of Hollywood and Hollywood CRA

employees were honored this week for 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 years of dedicated public service to the City

years of service. That’s impressive!

Of the 265 employees, 194 have worked for the City for more than 10 years. That too is a phenomenal

number and a great proxy that the City of Hollywood is a great place to work. It shows that our exciting

working environment, competitive salary and benefits package, opportunities for growth and

personal development, and our honorable public service culture is truly valued.

While I cannot individually recognize all of our honorees here, I would like to briefly mention the seven

employees who have provided 30 years or more of dedicated service to the City:

• Police Department: Andres Astacio, Pablo Vanegas, and Wilbur Fernander

• City Attorney’s Office: Debra-Ann Reese

• Fire Rescue and Beach Safety: Jose Morales and Patrick Moore

• Public Utilities: Angel Lopez (retired)

To every member of the City of Hollywood family, your dedication to work and this community is deeply

appreciated and does not go unnoticed by all those who live, work, and play in our City . Thank you for all

you do!

Congratulations to Our Team Diamond

Award Recipients Congratulations to the Hollywood Police Department Peer

Support Team for being selected as the May 2022 Team

Sheridan Street Bridge over Florida's Turnpike - Eastbound Lane Closure(s)

One eastbound lane on the Sheridan Street Turnpike Overpass in the City of

Hollywood is closed to vehicular traffic due to a truck that hit the underside

of the overpass causing significant damage to the structure. The truck was

carrying heavy construction equipment while traveling northbound on the

Florida Turnpike. One eastbound lane remains open and the westbound

lanes are not affected.

Broward County and the Florida Department of Transportation are working together to evaluate and repair

the damage. The County is helping to reduce traffic congestion in that area by synchronizing the traffic

lights to maximize the flow of traffic. Drivers are encouraged to seek an alternate route until repairs are

completed.

Hollywood Fire Rescue Show Support for Ukrainian Firefighters

In support of the Ukrainian firefighters and paramedics who are answering the call in the midst of

the Russian invasion, the Hollywood Fire Rescue Department participated in a traveling flag

The Department of Design and Construction Management (DCM) held a food drive in March to provide

much-needed items for the WECARE food pantry at Soref JCC in Plantation. DCM staff collected over 80

pounds of food, toiletries, and baby care items that the food pantry urgently needed. The WECARE food

pantry provided groceries and essential items to over 15,000 people throughout Broward County last year,

and they continue to work tirelessly to assist the most vulnerable in our community.

This is another occasion when DCM employees have worked together to go “Beyond the Bond” and help

others in our community.

Congratulations to class #342! The recruits, Brandon Carter, Kelly DeVito, Nicholas Leonti, Nicholas Nulty,

Marcos Sabino, and Elaine Trujillo, graduated today from the Broward County Police Academy. We are so

proud of their accomplishments. Not only did they graduate, but Marcos Sabino was Company Commander

and won the Physical Fitness award. Kelly DeVito was Class President. Elaine Trujillo was the class Scribe.

Sergeant Zeidell recently returned from an incredible week in Israel, hosted by the Secure Community

Network and Israel’s Ministry of Diaspora Affairs. He joined two dozen law enforcement officials from South

Florida to share best practices to fight global terrorism, antisemitism, and other threats facing the Jewish

community in America and around the world. They discussed internationally recognized approaches for

information exchange, physical security solutions, incident response, and resiliency.

Participants were able to observe Israeli culture, values, working conditions, and the many law enforcement,

security, and emergency response challenges present in Israel. This was a special trip to a unique part of the

world, and Sergeant Zeidell looks forward to sharing what he’s learned with his colleagues as the Hollywood

Police Department works to keep everyone in the Hollywood community safe and secure.

Keeping Hollywood Beautiful, Public Works Beach Maintenance raked the beach and removed the seaweed

that had accumulated there. While some seaweed can be beneficial for the environment and provide

habitats for wildlife and the dunes, an accumulation can have a negative effect. Excessive blooms can

smother sea turtle nests, deplete the water of oxygen, kill fish and harm the seagrasses growing in the

dunes. An odor caused by the algae releasing toxins like heavy metals, and hydrogen sulfide produced as

it rots, can be a deterrent to beach visitors and carry sea lice and insects that bite and sting, causing skin

irritation or rashes. Seaweed may also contain sewage discharge, stormwater runoff, or trash and debris.

Removing the seaweed provides a cleaner, safer, and more attractive beach, which improves the economy

and aesthetic, attracts more visitors, and helps Keep Hollywood Beautiful!
