Begin by leading the students in filling out an interactive anchor chart about the earth or earth day. It could be a KWL chart or a schema map. Students can follow along and create their own KWL chart. Then, using the earth teaching poster and recycle teaching poster, go over some basic things about our earth. This also is a perfect time to read any non-fiction books you may have about recycling or caring for our earth. Discuss how we can care for our earth by recycling. Present the students with the playground litter problem and have them be problem solvers as they work to create a solution.

Review the anchor chart created yesterday and ask students if they have anything they would like to add to the “k” or the “l” section. Students may also fill in their own chart from yesterday. Discuss items that can be recycled and cannot. Discuss why. After reviewing facts about earth and recycling, have the students help you complete the Recycle or Trash pocket chart sort. Have the students complete the Recycle or Trash Sort cut-and-paste page independently.

Begin by asking the students how they can help care for our earth. Use the reduce teaching poster to introduce the concept to students. Discuss with them differences between reducing and recycling. If you have a book about saving energy or water, read it aloud to the students. Have the students brainstorm ways they can reduce their use of energy and water. Students can then illustrate and build the sentence to show a way that they can save water.

Begin by asking the students how they can help care for Earth. Use the reuse teaching poster to introduce the concept to students. Discuss with them differences between reusing, reducing, and recycling. If you have a book about reusing things—clothing, old tires, etc., read it aloud to the students. Have the students brainstorm ways they can reuse items both at home and at school. Review all of the ways they can help the earth. Have students complete the I Can Help the Earth flip up book. Together with the students, complete the We Can Help the Earth mini-book.

Wrap up your 3 Rs unit by celebrating all you have learned. Students can write about how to be an earth helper using the paper and craft template provided or you can have them read and sort the facts in a pocketbook. Both of the activities can be used a unit assessment to check for understanding.

Earth
Amanda Richardson 2016
Caring for our Earth is important! We only have one. When we throw away
trash, it goes to a landfill. Most trash takes years and years to decompose on it’s own. We can help the Earth by reducing, reusing, and recycling more.
Reduce
Amanda Richardson 2016
We can reduce the amount of water and energy we use and the amount of trash we make.
Reuse
Amanda Richardson 2016
We can use reusable items and find new ways to use items to
help create less trash.
Recycle
Amanda Richardson 2016
We can recycle paper, plastic, glass, and aluminum to be made
into new items.
Helping the Earth
Tune: Twinkle, Twinkle
We can help the earth each day, Recycling along the way. Saving plastic and planting trees, Gives us all clean air to breathe. Telling others where to start, Cleaning up is all our part.

Recycle or Trash? Sorting Activities
Use the pocket chart cards provided to show students what living things need to be alive. Students can then
complete the flip book and cut-and-paste.
Another fun activity is to take your students on a scavenger hunt! Go for a nice walk outside to get some
fresh air and observe living things. Have students take a clip board and do this while outside, or they can complete
the activity page once they come back inside.
Amanda Richardson 2016
Cut out the pictures. Decide if you can recycle them or if they are trash. Glue them in the correct can.

Earth Day Sentence Building
Sentence building is a basic activity that is important for little learners! Students will cut out the words and glue
them in order on the dots to make a sentence. Students will then illustrate the sentence in the space above.

Caring for Our Earth
Pocket Book Sort Cut out and color the pocket book pieces. Assemble the
pocket book pieces as the instructions state. Remember, each part will create a pocket, with the
exception of the cover page. Fold a piece of construction paper like a card. Attach the cover page to the front. Inside, attach each pocket created. When the pockets are dry, sort the facts into good for our earth or bad
for our earth. You may choose to use this as an assessment or for students to record their learning as
they go.

Print, staple, and cut the books apart. Tip: I like to print them two-sided and have the copier staple one book as it
copies. Then I just have to cut the books! These books were created horizontally on the paper to help with exaggerated text direction for little readers.
My students loved to read their books and then place
them in their book tubs to read later during read-to-self time.

Earth Helper Writing Craftivity
Amanda Richardson 2016
Simply copy the pages and allow the students to color and glue them or you may choose to copy them onto
colored paper.
(Trick: I cut down my colored construction paper to 8.5x11 and run it through the copier. I have no problems
with this!)
