2 LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

By Ken McCoy

When I was cutting my teeth in youth work, one over-riding princi-ple seemed to dominate the ministry landscape: discipleship.Everywhere I turned there was another hot book or a must-attendseminar about the topic. “Who are you discipling?” was a com-mon question asked among youth leaders. I latched onto “disci-pleship” as a buzzword that was guaranteed to give a fledglingyouth pastor some credibility.

There was only one problem – nobody seemed to agree aboutwhat discipleship is. On one end of the spectrum were those whobelieved that discipleship meant leaving everything behind in orderto follow a mentor – anything less wasn’t “true” discipleship. Onthe other extreme were the folks who equated education with dis-cipleship – they believed that the act of teaching Biblical truth was“true” discipleship. (I even heard one nursery attendant exclaim,“We are actively discipling our three-year-olds!”)

I guess I landed somewhere between those two positions. Yes, Iknow that “disciple” and “discipline” are related terms. And yeah, Iknow that mentoring and teaching are included in the disciplingprocess. That all just seemed so, umm, dry. When you’re workingwith young people every day, engaging with them in their activitiesand relationships, “mentoring” and “teaching” just seem kind of detached.

Now, with hindsight, I can see that “discipleship” means “inten-tional influence.”

You and I have a ton of influence with young people because ofour role as youth leaders. Oh sure, we sometimes questionwhether we have any influence or impact on our young friends, butbelieve me, we do. But influence itself is not discipleship. Whenwe are intentional about our influence, discipleship happens.

To help you in this vital ministry process, we’ve assembled thisissue of Youth Leaders Only. In this magazine you’ll find severaldiscipleship-themed articles that will help shape your thinkingabout this subject. You might even copy them and give them toyour volunteer leaders and parents. You’ll also find the AnnualThematic Listing – all the songs that have been included in YouthLeaders Only this past year are listed by theme. What a greatresource!

You’ll also enjoy the insightful “Heart of the Artist” interviews – getthe inside story on Owl City, Peter Furler, Royal Tailor, and DominicBalli. The “reTuned” section features Biblical discussion guides fora bunch of popular secular songs. And we’ve got a double-articlefeature in the Modern Worship section along with a pile of worshipsong lead sheets for you to use with your worship band.

I hope you’ll be intentional about using these resources to influence teenagers to follow Jesus!

Godspeed,

Ken McCoy

IntentionalInfluence – The Real Power OfDiscipleship

How To Use This YLO Music Resource Book

The CoverIf you’re like most of us, you keep your YLO (Youth Leaders Only) books stored on a bookshelf. When you want to search for a song or video that deals with a certain topic, slide each book out a couple of inches and read the themes and featured articles for each issue. Cool!

The IndexTake a look at the index or “table of contents” — notice the colored bars? They represent sections in the book and they clue you in on which albums/Bible studies are “Main,”

“Mild” or “Hot.” You will notice in the Bible Studies section that each Leader Guide / Student Guide is color-keyed the same way. Wow! Someone’s been thinking!

Featured ArticlesEach issue of YLO has a certain “fla-vor.” Around that theme are a couple of “Feature Articles” as well as some of the other items you have in your YLO box. These articles give you insight into the heart and ministry of some of the musicians included in the YLO box.

Bible StudiesWhat makes Youth Leaders Only more than “cheap music” are the music-based Bible Study resources provided for you to use in your pro-gramming. Finding good Christian music isn’t hard, but coming up with ways to use it in your ministry with teenagers takes time, talent and ener-gy. Real-world youth leaders write these Bible Studies; the sessions are field-tested and proven effective with real-world teenagers.

Thematic ListingNot every song on every album has a Bible Study written for it. That doesn’t mean you can’t use those other songs in your ministry with students.

In this issue we have compiled ALL the songs from the past year into one ginormous list. Wowzers!

Modern Worship SectionIn this section you’ll find encouraging and enlightening resources to help you develop your youth’s worship ministry. You’ll find articles from wor-ship leaders and leadsheets of songs from some of the albums in this YLO. Although they are not really the kind of leadsheets most bands use, these pages of “lyrics with chords over them” are a great help when you want to teach the high school praise band a new tune. Many youth leaders tell us that the Lead Sheets are an invalu-able resource.

Re:TunedTake advantage of some popular secular songs to introduce a theme and to supplement your regular Bible Study lesson or outreach event. Use the opening questions and discussion ideas to get your students talking and thinking about the theme.

We hope this effort helps you reach and disciple more young people to be go-for-it Christians!

Sure, at first glance you notice how great it looks — very current, very stylish. Go ahead — flip through this book a bit. Notice the helpful design? Did you catch the organizational details? The more you look at this magazine, the more you will appreciate the functionality that has been built into it. Here is a quick tour…

I used to joke with myparents and say, “Don’ttell me what to do!”They would laugh andgive me that look. Youknow the one.

was about grace. Didn’t you even write a book aboutgrace, Bob? I thought religion says ‘do’ andChristianity says ‘done.’ I thought it was about rela-tionship, not rules. Isn’t this going from the gospelback to the law?”

No. It’s not a contradiction or going backwards. It’sgoing forward into Christian discipleship and maturity.Discipleship is so much more than giving mentalassent or agreement to the claims of Jesus. It’s bygrace through faith. It’s about putting my faith in whatJesus has done. It means trusting my eternal destinyin the fact that He is the only way, and believing in thewords He has said and the teachings He has given.

Discipleship means having such a relationship withthe living Jesus that I would trust whatever He tellsme – He says and I do, by His power. It’s not out ofsome guilt trip or an attempt to earn His approval, butthe result of knowing I am loved, forgiven, called byname, and that He has won my heart. Because ofthis, I will be His student and disciple, and I will followHim with my beliefs and actions.

When I was a youth pastor I had a big sign in myoffice that said “Youth. Challenge them or lose them.”The world can always entertain them better than wecan, but we have a cause, a purpose, and a reasonthat the world cannot give.

So, go and make loyal, learning followers of Jesus. How? Loyalty comes from knowing the Father andthe love of a King. Learning comes from the foolish-ness of preaching, so preach and teach the Word.

Ground students in the doctrine of the church andget them involved in living out the gospel in action.Challenge them to go on mission trips and outreach-es but even more so, to care enough to obey and gomake disciples themselves. In loving truth, let’s tellthem what to do.

Bob Lenz, founder of Life Promotions, Inc., and author of Grace –For Those Who Think They Don’t Measure Up, speaks to morethan 400,000 people each year on the love of God the value ofevery life. For information on having Bob speak for your next event, please visit lifespeaking.com.

They would tilt their head slightly to one side withtheir left eye almost squinted shut. That one lookwould be enough and I’d do what they asked. Sure, I was testing the waters but I still respected and hon-ored them enough to listen to them in the end – forthe most part.

Today’s generation seems to have taken the state-ment, “Don’t tell me what to do” to a whole newlevel. For many, it’s almost a way of life, and it breeds

a culture that has all but lost respect for authority. The moral authority of the church has faded in mostof their minds. Perhaps it’s because of scandals andhypocrisy on one hand and legalism on the other. And that’s not to mention whether or not the rapturehappened on May 21st.

We have lost our voice with today’s youth. Thechurch has tried to get their attention back throughentertainment, and in many cases has turned to funand games. Please don’t misunderstand me; there isnothing wrong with fun and games or entertainment. They may even be an essential part of a well-round-ed, effective youth program. But let’s make one thingclear – they’re not making disciples.

Many of our youth are leaving the church after highschool, and studies prove that the behavior and prac-tices of those who claim to be Christians are notmuch different than non-Christians. We need to takea hard look at the question, “Is the church fulfillingJesus’ great commission to make disciples?”

Matthew 28:19 says, “Go and make disciples of allnations.” I’ve heard it said that it’s still the great com-mission, not the great suggestion. In his classic bookThe Lost Art of Discipleship Making, author LeRoyEims poses the question, “Is a shoe factory still ashoe factory if it goes through all the motions ofbeing a shoe factory, but never produces shoes?” He makes the challenge by asking, “If the church isn’t making disciples, is it still the church?”

What is a disciple? Stealing the definition from myown home church, a disciple is a loyal, learning fol-lower of the Lord Jesus. Then what is the mark of adisciple? If we continue on with the verse in Matthew

28, it says, “baptizing them in the name ofthe Father and of the Son and of the HolySpirit, teaching them to obey all that Ihave commanded.” Stuart Briscoe, authorand teacher, puts it this way: “The mark ofa Christian is someone who obeys thecommands of Jesus.”

You may be asking, “Isn’t that going backto a list of do’s and don’ts? I thought it

Do you rememberthe last time youlost somethingimportant anddesperatelywanted to find it?

I recall those moments all too well. Inthe midst of my searches, I even hadmoments where I could imagine thelost object sitting in the place where Ibelieved I left it. I can also feel thedisappointment I experienced when itwas not to be found.

Our imagination can play tricks onus, but it can also be a very helpfultool. In 1960 Maxwell Maltz wrote abook entitled Psycho-Cybernetics.Many motivational and self-helpspeakers based their principles onMaltz’s idea of “a positive outcomethrough visualization of that positiveoutcome.” (Psycho-CyberneticsAuthor; Plastic Surgeon Tries to HealInner Scars, Los Angeles Times,November 2, 1973).

When I was in college, I took a classcalled “Theory and Technique ofTeam Sports Skills.” In one of the lec-tures, we talked about how to coachan athlete on shooting proper basket-ball free throws. The professor talkedabout the usefulness of pscyho-cybernetics and imagining what onewould do to complete the perfect free throw.

Have you ever imagined what itwould look like for a high school sen-ior in your ministry to be fully-disci-pled and perfectly ready to enter thenext stage of his or her life? Whatwould you want that student toknow? How would you want him orher to act?

While we know that no one on thisearth is perfect, we need to “aimhigh” in our vision for loving andequipping the youth that we shep-herd. Accomplishing this is all butimpossible if we are not willing to dothe work of creating a profile describ-ing the character of such a person. There is no one perfect descriptionfitting all youth, so youth leaders canenjoy the freedom of creating a tailor-made vision for their youth.

Where do we start?1) Begin with prayer. Ask God for insight and wisdom.

2)Include the primary principlesJesus taught us to live.

3)Take the best character traits ofgodly men and women throughoutthe Bible.

4)Develop a list of everything youbelieve should be in the profile. Noinitial list is too long.

5)Allow key parents, youth leaders, and students to review the listadding their own suggestionsand input.

6)Edit, combine, and pare the list toa manageable, measurable numberof qualities (somewhere betweenseven and twelve).

7)Publish the profile and pu it touse. Let it influence your teaching, guide your curriculum choicesand be at the center of yourministry strategy.

I’M DONEWITH YOU...”

About fifteen years, ago I took thetime to develop a “Profile of aDiscipled Student.” I was mentoredthrough the process by patient volun-teer leaders, older youth pastors, andstudents who sincerely wanted togrow. Over the years I have used thisdocument in many different forms, given it different titles, and empha-sized various parts. Below is the pro-file we have created in our ministry. Ihope it will serve as an example foryour reflection, prayer, and planning.Feel free to use it in any form – youdon’t even have to change the words!

When a student graduates from our ministry, he or she will exhibitthese qualities:

1)Love for God (Mark 12:30) –Regularly participates in corporateand individual worship of God; dis-ciplined in quiet times; internalizesthe truth of sin, salvation, the sacra-ments, and God in three persons.

2)Faithful to God and others(Romans 12:1-2, 10) – Practicesspiritual disciplines; keeps appoint-ments; fulfills commitments to oth-ers and projects through setting pri-orities; practices the holy life andintegrity in living.

3)Student of the Word (2 Timothy2:15) – Spends consistent time inthe Word; changed behavior as aresult of internalized truth; usesGod’s truth in everyday decisions;grows in the skills/disciplines ofmemorization of verses/significantpassages or can identify the loca-tion of important stories/teachings.

4)Pray-er (1 Thessalonians 5:17)– Committed to regular times ofprayer; initiates or suggests prayerin the midst of life circumstances.

5)Critical Decision-Maker (1 Kings3:1-15, esp. v.9) – Demonstratesability to decide right and wrong on

an individual basis through thepower of the Holy Spirit and theinstruments of Scripture, tradition, experience, and reason.

6)Life-Long Learner (2 Timothy3:14) – Lives a life of obedienceand servanthood; asks thoughtfulquestions; seeks growth opportuni-ties beyond “growth level” eventsand youth group experience;responds and acts on instruction.

7)Life-Leader (1 Thessalonians2:8) – Knows how and is willing tobe a witness; understands the spiri-tual battle and the need to be apositive influence through Godlyexample in word and deed.

8)Commitment to the Community ofFaith (Hebrews 10:19-25, esp.v.25) – Values the fellowship ofChrist’s body and the variety of giftsto be used for “the common good”of the Church.

Early in my ministry as a volunteer youth leader,God brought a man named George into my life. Iwas working at the construction firm and hadjust been promoted from a Superintendent to aProject Manager. My first job as a ProjectManager was to build a new car dealership.Since the dealership’s owners were young andhad never been involved in construction before, they hired a friend to oversee the project forthem. This friend was George. George was a 70-year old retired Project Manager from one of the largest construction companies in Los Angeles.

My first impression of George was that hewas an old, cranky, hardnosed, know-it-all who was determined to put me in myplace. Since I was never one to admitopenly to any lack of ability, I tendedto sit back and listen as Georgewould rant and rave and carry onabout how things were done in hisday. ROCKHe was short and somewhat bowlegged. He had a head shaped like alight bulb and a voice that could carry for a half-mile. His onlydrawback was that he taught math, of all things. But to me anda dozen other young men, he was “The Rock.” His name isRussell Burgess, and he directed my high school’s CrossCountry and Track teams. He did a great job too — theCross Country team my senior year was one of the bestin California.

Spending most afternoons under his tutelage, rowdy, unruly boys were shaped by Coach Burgess into a dis-ciplined team. His workouts were always tough, and hiseyes saw everything. His tactician’s mind enabled ourteams to outperform our talent level. He rewarded effortas much or more than results. He respected hard work, and taught us to revere it too. Discipline, sweat, sacrifice, dedication, teamwork — virtues he drilled into us until theybecame a part of us.

I just got off the phone with him. We haven’t talked in twenty-five years, but Ijust had to call him to thank him for helping shape the person I’ve become.(And, I had to get his permission to use him for this article.) “Thanks forspending the energy on the boisterous, wisecracking, untalented teenagerthat I was” I said. “I never regretted the time spent on you, Ken” was hisresponse. My heart was warmed and encouraged – once again – by his wordsand the tone of his voice.

Sports and youth ministry are often two wings of the same airplane. Theyboth attempt to shape the character of young people and build into

young lives virtues that are not easily learned. Coach Burgesshad as much of an impact on me, possibly more, than my

youth pastor and home church – and that’s saying a lot. Asyouth leaders, we need to see ourselves as teammateswith the rest of the youth community: parents, coaches, teachers, band directors, school administrators, youthorganizations, other youth ministries and churches, etc. When we do, we’ll realize that our young friends areindeed growing into men and women of character.

Coach Burgess would have made a great youth pastor. His athletes, and I’m quoting him from our phone conver-

sation, “respected hard work and dedication. They hon-ored their community and the help and support they

received. They were generous with their applause, includingthe opposition, in victory or defeat. They realized that talent was

not as important as effort. And they knew that their team supportedthem, as they supported each other.”

I hope you’re able to have the kind of success that Coach Burgess enjoys.

Keeping his usual cool, Coach Burgess makes his point with the team.

broad daylight outside their school. Widows stillgetting used to life without their husbands.

That night, I was tempted to agree with my newsobbing friend. As Christians, we really don’tunderstand the blessings that come along withbeing born in the United States. That is until yousee what Christians face in most parts of the world. And then the guilty feeling follows.

Persecution against Christians is not an issue thatfaded out as the book of Acts came to a close; ithas only intensified since the church was officiallyestablished. Though far removed from the head-lines, the fact is that more Christians have died fortheir faith in the last hundred years than all of previ-ous church history, combined.

The numbers are staggering. The reality is crip-pling. And we, as church leaders, must help thosein our churches respond. This was the place Ifound myself as I spoke with my new friend in thelobby that night. Obviously, a broken spirit is a nat-ural response and perhaps even an appropriateone. But brokenness should lead to repentance. And repentance should lead to action. But wheredo we go from there?

First, we should pray. From the beginning of ourexperience working with those who have been per-secuted, time and time again, they asked us topray for them. There is something cosmically spiri-tual that happens when believers lift other believersin prayer, even if they are on the other side of theworld. I think this is what the writer of Hebrewsmeant when he commanded his readers to remem-ber those who are in prison as if you were in prisonwith them (Hebrews 13:3). If we truly are a globalchurch and if we truly believe in the power ofprayer, this habit should form naturally. So, pray forprotection. Pray for a spirit of boldness. Pray thatthe persecutors would come to know Jesus. Justpray. And pray often.

Secondly, we should give. We live in the richestcountry in the history of mankind. Our lower mid-dleclass citizens would be considered extremelywealthy in most of the world today. To be blunt, weneed to financially support the persecuted church.Help provide medical attention or build an orphan-age. Don’t buy a new projector for your church untilyou have helped rebuild a church in India. Thereare a few solid organizations out there that can putresources directly in the hands of those who need it.

Finally, remember how I mentioned that we areblessed as Americans? It’s true. But that blessingbrings with it a great deal of responsibility. The

Under normal circumstances this would be an oddexchange. Yet, if you understood the film she hadjust seen and the people I met while filming it, youwould understand. We connected because both ofus felt a little guilty.

For over 14 months, I worked with a crew of peo-ple who shot and produced a feature length docu-mentary on the persecuted church entitled LoveCosts Every Thing. Our travels took us fromColombia to India and to Paris – to name a few. Weattended Mass in Iraq and black tie dinners inWashington, DC. Along the way I met countlesspeople who had encountered pure evil. Pastorswhose wives had been raped and beaten to deathwith rods. Kids who saw their father executed in

global church is looking at the Western church toutilize the resources we have been given. Specifically, we need to do a better job leveragingdemocracy for those who are suffering because oftheir faith. As I type this, legislation will soon cometo a vote on Capitol Hill that will go a long way inproviding protection for Christians across most ofthe Middle East. Regardless of our political lean-ings, we must engage our representatives and begthem to help protect Christians around the world. Itis our duty as Americans and Christians.

I walked through these responses with the younglady in the lobby that night. She thanked me for mytime. I told her I appreciated her heart. As I walkedaway, I too began to get a little overwhelmed bythe issue. This is not a tragedy we’re going tosolve. But we have to do more than just feel guilty.Love for our persecuted brothers and sistersdemands more than that.

Love, after all, costs every thing.

interlínc’s President Allen Weed caught up with OwlCity (Adam Young) in the middle of his “All ThingsBright And Beautiful” Tour. Here is an excerpt ofwhat the guys talked about.

Allen: Tobymac recently tweeted a videoclip of you leading 60,000 people singing“Fireflies” at the Creation Festival. He saidit was one of the most amazing concertevents he has experienced. Explain whatthat experience was like for you.

Adam: That was certainly themost people I’ve played in frontof before and it was unbelievablyhumbling. There’s somethingreally powerful about thousandsof people lifting their voices tosing together – it’s hard toexplain but that sound makes thetears start to flow – and it wasthat way for me that evening atCreation. It was indescribable.

Also at Creation, you and theband dropped by the YouthLeader Hospitality Area tomeet with youth leaders. What did youthworkers haveto say to you? What did youwalk away from that timethinking and feeling?

It was a whirlwind. I’m anextreme introvert so to besuddenly placed in a room with400 people crowded around, Iwould’ve instantly “checked out”in any other situation. But theseyouthworkers were so encouraging and uplifting, Ileft the building feeling so heartened and I truly feltthe presence of Christ in that room. It was anamazing experience and I’m beyond grateful fortheir prayers.

Discipleship is the focus of this edition ofYouth Leaders Only. What does that termmean to you as a follower of Christ? Whohave been the primary people who haveinvested in your life and helped you tobecome more of a disciple of Christ?

The term brings to mind what being a true believer, follower, adherent, or devotee means. To me, itmeans following Christ in body, mind, and spirit –and praising Him no matter what comes my way,be it good or bad. Discipleship is evidence of faith. My parents have always been the primary peoplewho’ve invested in my life and I would be nowherewithout their guidance and support. They taughtme what being a true disciple of Christ means andthat ultimately, it’s not about doing, it’s about being.

You are on a 60-city, 20-country tour thatgoes through most of the fall. How are youand the band staying fresh spiritually andcreatively during this amazing schedule? How would you like youthworkers and their

students to pray for you and the Owl City team?

It’s a long tour but I’m so grateful to be allowed todo what I’m most passionate about during such ashaky/unsteady time in the music industry.Surrounding myself with the right kinds of people isa big help in staying spiritually fresh and I trulywouldn’t want to tour if I didn’t have 15 of the bestpeople in the world with me. I might suggestyouthworkers to pray for resilience for us, that wewould keep looking at the task we’ve been given asan immense dream come true and never to takeeven a split-second for granted.

“Deer In The Headlights” is a great songand great video! Tell us about making thevideo. It is every young mans dream to drivea DeLorean car – what was it like? How didthey get the deer to not go crazy in that

convenience mart? Do you have any funinside stories from the shoot?

Unfortunately, I can’t drive stick shift – and theDeLorean was a manual car, so that made theshoot very interesting and quite hilarious. Thedeer’s name was Holly and her trainers had to laydown Astroturf on the gas station floor so Hollywould think she was frolicking on real grass. TheIndian gentleman with the turban was the actualowner of the convenience shop, and LIGHTS was

incredibly gracious enough to flyto Los Angeles from Toronto tomake her stunning cameo. I had a blast.

It’s easy for people (like me) tobecome “blinded by the brightlight” that is romance.Sometimes the flirty warm-fuzzies have a funny way ofputting on Halloween masks andturning into hideous monsters, revealing that sometimes weprefer to force “being in love” forthe sake of avoiding loneliness –we are romantically involved withsomeone for all the wrongreasons! “Deer in the Headlights”tackles this issue in a cheekyway and pokes fun at the factthat sometimes, romanticrelationships are not about loveat all! The song was my way oftaking a step back from feelingthe need to be in a relationshipand embracing the fact thatpeople were created to haveseasons throughout life, and

some doors should be gone through alone! Thesong is my way of pushing all the “fluff” aside so Ican better focus on the things that t ruly matter.

We love the new album. The album is beingincluded in Youth Leaders Only with studymaterials for youthworkers to use with theirgroups. What are your highlights from it?

A line from the song “The Real World” pretty muchsums up the whole record - “Reality is a lovelyplace but I wouldn’t want to live there.” That’salways been my way of escaping from real life, andas an introverted guy I’ve always been so happyand content to be isolated in my own thoughts. Icould probably live off of my daydreams if I had to.The record is basically a 45-minute escape from reality.

The Owl City Band is way more than just aband – you’re friends. How important is thatto you as the front man?

It’s a real camaraderie and it’s a lot more funtouring with a bunch of friends than by myself.Naturally, Owl City is a solo act – but I surewouldn’t want to do what I do without thesewonderful folks alongside me. It’s a beautiful thing.

Peter Check out the Peter Furler Bible Study materials on page 36.

Allen Weed, interlínc’s President, had a chance to talk with Peter Furlerrecently. Now you can be a “fly on the wall” during their conversation.

Allen: What have you been doing since your transition from the Newsboys?

Peter: Summer and I had real sense that we needed to simplify our lives. That was a big process; we began to look at everything we had and sell ourfurniture, give away things, and sell our house. We wanted to be able to be ledinstead of pulled. Sometimes our anxieties, ambitions, expectations, finances, commitments, and possessions pull us. Looking at the reasons behind whatwe do has been huge for us. That’s kind of what I’ve been doing.

I didn’t leave Newsboys to go solo, but I am a singer and a songwriter – Irealized that those are gifts that God gave me. I wouldn’t say I laid them down, but I didn’t stir them up for a while. It was time to stir them up again. Wemoved down to the Gulf Coast because the climate and the pace of life weremuch like my childhood home in Australia. I also enjoyed hanging out withfolks who are not music people. That’s kind of what I’ve been doing the lastcouple of years – stopping to smell the roses.

Leaving an established band and the group of friends that you’vehad for 20 years or more had to have been difficult.

You know, whenever God’s in it, it’s really peaceful. There have been no regrets; there have been no moments of anguish or anything. The(News)boys are doing their own thing now, and the Newsboys have becomesomething different.

I’ve learned about identity; your identity is not in the size of youryouth group or the size of your church. If you compare yourselfto someone else, your identity is going up and down continually.Maybe you’re a youth leader and you went to a convention andmet a leader from a mega church. You might feel small andinsignificant when that’s not true. Or if someone from a churchmuch smaller than you came to you for advice, you might betempted to feel that you are more important than that person, which also wouldn’t be true. It’s the same in the music world. But if your identity is in Christ and in whom He has called you tobe, then you’re an individual and He has a plan for you. You are apart of something that is meant to do its job and that job is veryimportant. I began to rest in my identity in Christ more than myidentity in who I was or who I thought I was.

In your new beginnings, what would you say is your focus as amusician and in your concerts?

I’m focused on teenagers. The next generation is so important and it’s aBiblical mandate for us to help raise the next generation. How I do that isthrough the Word put to melody. I give them a song that they can carry withthem through their travels that they can live on and be strengthened by. Thesong can help them have a great foundation, and they can be a light to thegeneration after them.

The theme of the YLO box that your album is going into isDiscipleship. You once told me how your pastor had invested inyou, even at times when you didn’t want that to happen. He wouldgive you a call and pursue you from a discipleship side, and I thinkyou gave me a couple instances where you told him, “You knowwhat, I just don’t want to do it anymore.” And he said, “Why don’t Icome over right now?” You found the richness of what God did inyour life because of a man who pursued you to invest in you. That’sdiscipleship. So talk a little bit about that.

That “discipleship” was important for me because there were things in theWord that I really needed explained to me. Hanging out with teachers broughtthe Word to a new depth in my life. Discipleship is also observing otherpeople’s lives. As a younger married man at the time, I needed to see howgodly men treat their wives. There are many practical things available to helpyou live your life. Discipleship is not about dictatorship or telling someone howto live their life; it’s showing by example.

Your new album seems like it’s a lot of fun.

The record is filled with songs of joy and freedom. That’s the heartbeat of the record - songs ofencouragement. As a songwriter I tried to keep thecraft to as high a standard as I could. The record tome feels like some of my best work yet.

When an 11th grade guy in a youth grouplistens to your album, what do you hope hethinks about?

I hope it becomes something that encourages himin his walk; I hope it draws him closer to God’sWord and God’s plan for his life and what God hasfor him in this generation. There are so many seedsand so many ideas blowing in the wind, especiallyin this generation. A bad idea can travel faster thanever, so more than ever we need to know and liveGod’s Word. My lyrics are based on God’s Word,so I hope that 11th grader will walk away with alove and attention to the Word of God.

What’s the story behind the Royal Tailor name?

With our name we give honor to God who is royalty, the King of kings whoserves as a “tailor” of sorts on our behalf in that He fixes, mends, and adjustsour lives. We understand that because we are called His sons and daughters, royalty is our identity but servanthood is our assignment.

What musical influences have lead to the creation of your sound?

We listen to everything from bluegrass to black gospel. We all grew up listeningto and playing music from artists like Israel Houghton, Marvin Sapp, and FredHammond – but we listened to all types of music. Later on, we discoveredHillsong – and that really changed some things for us. What’s great is that inour collaboration we create something unique because we build on eachother’s individual strengths.

What is the central message that you communicate when perform-ing in front of students?

We hope to communicate ideas and principles centered around our Black &White album. In today’s post-modern culture everything seems to be up fordiscussion. There is nothing wrong with dialogue – in fact, we need it.However, the conversation needs to be guided by thecompass of the truth of God’s Word, not merely our per-sonal opinion. The world we live in is now grey, and thelines of right and wrong are easily blurred. Black & Whiteis meant to inspire a movement of people who will deter-mine that no matter what changes in the world, we’ll doour best to do what’s right.

What call to action do you have for students?

People are suffering the symptoms of avisionless life. If we can inspire studentsto have a vision of who Jesus is, andwhat He wants to do in and throughthem, we not only cure the symptomsbut eradicate the core of the issue. Thatwould result in changing the world forthe better.

What 3-4 songs best define the Black &White project?

“Death of Me”, “Gravity”, “Black & White”, and“Freefall” really define the album, althougheach song gives the listener a glimpse of whoGod is and what our response should be toHim in many different aspects of life.

What are some consistent sources ofinspiration for your music and ministry?

Our relationships with God and with people, ofcourse. We work closely with our church’s(and mine) student ministry, so we really get tostay connected to the issues students are fac-ing. I also find inspiration in good preachingand good books.

How can we pray for you?

There is always a lot of pressure when some-one steps onto a public platform. We needwisdom and understanding. Pray that Godwould continue to give us favor and that we would see a real, tangible impact from this ministry.

HEART 17OF THE ARTIST

© 2011, INTERLiNC. INTERLINC-ONLINE.COM / 800.725.3300

What is your music and ministrybackground?I grew up in a very musical family. My mom singsand writes and all us kids loved music. And all ofus could sing – except me. I was tone-deaf untilI met Jesus when I was sixteen. God ultimatelydoes stuff for His glory and there’s no doubt inmy mind why God healed my ears and gave mea voice. He chooses to use the foolish things ofthis world; in this case, a tone-deaf kid with nosense of rhythm who couldn’t sing or play a noteto save his life.

Soon after I was born again I started writingmusic and using what God had given me as away to show God to the world. I attended Biblecollege for a couple of years then went on to bea youth pastor at Calvary Chapel in Ramona,California. Eventually I became the worshippastor at Reality in Carpinteria, California.

In November 2011 I left the paid staff position atthat church and went into full-time music. I stilllead worship music at Reality whenever I amhome and continue to serve as one of the laypastor/elders at the church.

What is the aim your ministry?I really just want my life and music to be a tool toexpose Jesus to the world, and to move Hisfollowers to step out in faith and follow theexample of Jesus in how He loved and servedthe world around Him.

What are the “backstops” that you have inplace in your life that help you maintainbalance?Abiding in, and continually keeping my eyes onChrist is the only thing that really balances me andgives me a plumb line to keep me straight. Havinga wife who’s a seeker of righteousness and a groupof pastors (who are also some of my best friends)around me and who aren’t afraid to slap me if Istart being dumb definitely plays a huge role inkeeping me grounded and focused.

What are the musical influences that have led to thecreation of your diverse musical sound?I think my sound was really shaped between theages of 15 and 22 when Sublime, Lauren Hill, BobMarley, Real Big Fish, and Wyclef Jean wereinfluencing me. (Note: I’m not necessarilyendorsing the lyr ics or messages behind thenamed artists. Just stating the fact that they were ahuge part of what shaped my sound.)

What is the message of your “AmericanDream” album? This life is about so much more than we make itsometimes. We’re here for a purpose greater thanour own. Everything that God does or allows tohappen, He wants to use to accomplish thatpurpose. But life is sometimes really hard andhonest ly kind of sucks. Yet the love of God isstronger. It was strong enough to carry Christthrough the cross, and it will be strong enough tocarry us through the stormiest of trials. I don’t want

to make my life about me, my plans, mysuccess, my money, my stuff, or my “dream.” Iwant my life to be about God. This album willhopefully push people to live the way that Godintended them to live, and give hope that will be used to shine light in the midst of life’sdarkest moments.

You have been in front of many studentsover the last several years. What call toaction do you leave with students?Young people (especially in America) need tograsp the fact that we’re here for a reason muchbigger than ourselves. God has chosen to workthrough His people to accomplish His work. Ascrazy as it sounds, God wants to involve us inHis great plan of redeeming humanity back to Himself.

How can we pray for you? Thanks for asking. I’d love you to pray that Iwould be strategic with every move I make. Mywife gets to sing with me and the kids (Selah, 7and Solomon, 4) get to travel with us and be apart of what God is doing, but the travelling canget really hard on us. This is also a kind of scarytime financially for us, as this is the first year thatmusic is my sole income. God has been sofaithful to meet every need and I know He willcontinue, but we definitely need prayer that wekeep walking by faith.

AARON KEYES

ThemeGod’s Protection

ObjectiveThis study highlights God’s protection and help.

Warm UpTo prepare, read Aaron Keyes’ discussion of this song at aaronkeyes.com/2011/04/dwell.

Show the students a pair of sturdy, warm work gloves. Ask the group to give reasons for wearing gloves. Highlight the protective and warmth functions of gloves.

TransitionPoint out that gloves are useless unless you put them on your hands. Illustrate this by putting on the gloves and talking about how they could protect your hands from injury as they assist in difficult work, and how they would provide warmth in cold working conditions.

The SongHand out the Student Guides and say, “God, like this glove, is a protection for all those who dwell in Him. He is a place of warmth in which we can rest. We will now listen to a song that describes this. As you listen, fill in the blanks on your sheets from the words of the chorus.” Play the song. Here are the missing words: Most High God, Your, Your, Lord, weapon, weapon, weapon, Lord.

TransitionAsk, “Do these words sound familiar?” See whether they happen to know that some of these phrases are from Scripture. See whether anyone happens to know which verses might be represented in the phrases on their sheet. Tell them they will talk about the verses that inspired Aaron Keyes to write this song.

Bible StudyIsaiah 54:16-17 – Point out that the weapons that could destroy the people of Israel were things made by God Himself. Ask the students about who made the blacksmith who forged the spears or swords or shields for any army of that day. Ask them who made the soldiers themselves. Note that God even made the enemy who attacked Israel. But, God made a

promise through Isaiah in verse 17 that no weapon made to attack Israel would work. God can stop weapons and armies since He made those very armies and weapons. Highlight the last phrase of verse 17 – that this promise is the “benefit” or “heritage” (depending on the translation you are using) from the Lord. If we are God’s servants or God’s children or God’s followers, then He protects us.

Psalm 91 – Note that the song’s chorus says, “dwells in the shelter of the Most High God.” Ask them to look again at verse 1 and highlight that they will “abide in the shadow of the Almighty.” A big strong God casts His shadow over us and protects us. Notice the two names given for God in this verse: “Most High” and “Almighty.” In the original language, El Elyon means “Most High God” and is used for God most often when praising, worship-ping, or thanking Him. El Shaddai means “God Almighty” and is used when describing Him as a powerful God who does miracles. When we worship God and live in Him, He helps us as our powerful protector. This is just like the glove. When we put it on for warmth (praising the Most High God), then we also receive protection (protection of God Almighty). This was in (awk-ward wording) Isaiah 54:16-17 too because those who are servants of

God (praising the Most High God) are promised that no weapon will work against them (protection of God Almighty).

Acts 16:16-34 – Explain that Paul and Silas were doing the right thing when they exorcised the demon from the girl, and that God was with them when they were beaten and put in jail. What were they doing while they were in jail? Because of the protec-tion of God Almighty, they did not escape from the jail but stayed to share Jesus with the jailer and his whole family who then became fol-lowers of the (need the word ‘the’?) Christ. God’s protection came after hours of praying and singing to Him, not calling lawyers to bail them out! When Paul and Silas dwelled in God with such passion for such a long time, God provided such a miracle that a whole family believed in the good news of Jesus. It was such a miracle that it was permanently remembered in the book of Acts, and we read about it almost two thou-sand years later!

Wrap UpClose with a prayer that asks for God to help us feel at home in Him and that we will trust in His protection and power and help.

ThemeJustice

ObjectiveStudents will be challenged to actively provide justice in the world in the name of Christ.

Warm Up Bite the Onion – Bring a few large onions, a stereo, and Andy Kirk’s “Wake Up My Soul” album. Have the students sit in a circle. Explain that this game is a variation on Hot Potato. You will play the music. As the music plays, the students pass an onion around the circle. When the music stops, the student with the onion takes a large bite out of it. If he or she refuses, that student is out of the game. If he or she does take a bite, the game continues. Have extra onions on hand in case the one being used gets gross or there is no longer anywhere to bite the onion.

TransitionSay, “You had to decide what to do with the onion that was handed to you. Did you make the hard choice and bite the onion or make the easy choice and pass it on without bit-ing it? In life, God grants us money, safe living environments, and many other resources. When we receive these resources, we have a choice to make—do we use our resources to honor God or not? We will listen to a song by Andy Kirk called, ‘Let Justice Ring.’ This song challenges us to make the right choices with the resources that God has handed to us.”

The SongThis song has abundant images of the poor and of the faithful. Hand out the Student Guides and have the students create an image of their own as they listen to the song. When the song ends, ask, “What is one way this song instructs us as Christ’s followers?”

TransitionHave students share their images and explain them. Use their images to expand on the theme of the song. Say, “Christ wants us to see the hurt, often caused by poverty, around us. Those needs might be material, relational, or spiritual. The story of Zacchaeus from Luke 19 shows us how we should respond to God’s grace and God’s gifts as we see the needs around us.”

Bible StudyRead Luke 19:1-11 aloud. Explain that this passage comes at a very important moment in the ministry of Jesus, a moment that impacts all those who seek to follow Him. Back in Luke 9:51, Jesus began a journey that would take Him to the cross. From that moment until the triumphal entry in Luke 19:28, Jesus prepared His disciples to carry on after He was gone. He offered much instruction and demonstrated many actions that still serve as examples for how His followers should live. The story of Zacchaeus is one such example.

Have students use their Student Guides to individually answer these questions. Then discuss the questions.

•What do you know about Zacchaeus from this story?

•What do you know about tax collec-tors back then?

•What did Jesus do about Zacchaeus?

•How do Jesus’ actions show accep-tance and justice?

•How would you define “justice” in this situation?

•What example does Jesus’ action offer to us?

•Following his encounter with Jesus, how did Zacchaeus change?

•How should you change following your encounters with Jesus?

Wrap UpHand out 3x5 cards. Have the students write the name of someone they know who is hurting or unaccepted. Have the students silently pray for that per-son and consider how they can offer that person hope. Then have them write on the card one way they can share justice with that person. Then, let the students know that you will contact them in the next week to see whether they have had an opportunity to offer justice. Close in prayer.

ThemeGod’s Sufficiency

ObjectiveStudents will know that God is sufficient to meet them in their time of need.

Warm UpGood News, Bad News – Get a couple copies of today’s newspaper. (Do it before you leave Starbucks because I know that you are there finishing up your preparation for teaching this les-son.) Hand out the Student Guides and pens. Break into two groups and have one group find some of the “good news” stories, and have the other group find some of the “bad news” stories in the newspapers. List them in the “Good News, Bad News” section of the Student Guides. Give them a few minutes to really read and discover what impact the stories have on the people in the articles. Next, have each group act out a two-minute newscast of their stories. (Award extra points for good acting and clarity.)

TransitionHave the students finish the sentenc-es in the Transition section of the Student Guide. Ask 3-4 students to share what they wrote in the blanks.

The SongHave the students listen to the song and write down their thoughts on how God meets people in their time of need.

•What are some of the hard times that the lyrics talk about?

•What does the song say that God will do in those times?

•Summarize the message on the song in one sentence.

TransitionIf you have access to the internet, look up “Ashes Remain Everything Good story behind the song” on YouTube and play the video where Josh from the band tells about the Biblical inspi-ration behind this song and his own experiences in how God is always present in our lives.

Bible StudyRead Acts 16:16-40. Discuss:

•Why were Paul and Silas thrown in prison?

•What did Paul and Silas do instead of questioning why this happened to them?

•Do you think that being thrown in prison was what Paul and Silas hoped for?

•Why was the jailer so frightened?

•Why was he so eager to be saved?

•What was the jailer’s response to God?

•How did God show His goodness in this passage?

•How many people in this story were affected by God’s goodness?

Paul and Silas stayed faithful to God and trusted that He was sufficient to meet them in their time of need.

Summary of the passage:For Paul and Silas

•Helping a girl who was demon pos-sessed got them BEATEN and thrown in prison.

•Instead of complaining, they were PRAISING God.

•God had a BIGGER plan than what anyone else could see.

•Not only did He rescue Paul and Silas from prison, He RESCUED the jailer and his family – a rescue that had ETERNAL effects.

For You

•I may have needs that are GREATER than my own understanding or ability to handle.

•I need to trust that God is SUFFI-CIENT to meet me in time of need.

•God’s goodness always chooses what is BEST for me.

Wrap UpRead Psalm 46:1-3. This song of praise to God mentions the earth quaking and the mountains crumbling into the sea. Famous Bible teacher J. Vernon McGee once said, “—the crumbling of the earth would be the most extreme circumstance I can think of. Has the earth ever been taken out from under you? Have you ever been suspended in space? Most people think they are the only ones who have ever had trouble. Everyone has trouble, but God’s people find God sufficient in time of trouble.” No matter what you are facing, hard times or the best of times, God will be who He has always been and be more than enough of what you need in that situation.

Close with prayer and take the oppor-tunity to pray and encourage students who may be feeling imprisoned or who may feel that their world is crumbling.

ThemeAmbition

ObjectiveStudents will learn that their ambition as Christians is to be “sold out” for Christ.

Warm UpHang several large sheets of paper on the walls. Label each sheet with one of the following: school, team, parents, family, teacher, best friend, and job. As students arrive, direct them to choose two or three areas and write a “Pledge of Allegiance” to each one. Encourage them to make their pledges lighthearted and humorous. Read aloud some of the funnier pledges, then ask:

•What does “allegiance” mean?

•What does pledging our allegiance mean to you?

•Do we have an allegiance to God? Explain.

TransitionExplain that by giving their whole self with every choice that is made, they leave a mark for Him.

The SongPlay the song.

Bible StudyHand out the Student Guides and work through this study with the students.

“With every day that passes by I want to leave a mark…” – Read Leviticus 19:18, Deuteronomy 6:4, and Mark 12:28-34.

•A test is sometimes the only way we can know what’s in our hearts. Jesus taught how we can test our love for Him. (Matthew 25:40) You can find out if you really love Jesus by notic-ing how you treat those for whom He died—the poor, the outcast, and the sick. When we love them, we demon-strate that we truly love God.

•In the Old Testament was consid-ered the seat of the intellect, will, and intentions.

•We owe Him love. Call on a student to read Mark 12:28-34. Group stu-dents into four teams and assign the following phrases to each team:

Team 1: “Love the Lord your God… with all your heart.”Team 2: “Love the Lord your God… with all your soul.”Team 3: “Love the Lord your God… with all your mind.”Team 4: “Love the Lord your God… with all your strength.”

Direct each team to discuss its phrase, and then create a skit to illustrate the meaning of the phrase. Following the presentation of the skits, ask: Besides what was portrayed, what other ways do we show God we love Him with our whole being? Do you owe God this kind of love? Why or why not? How does loving God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength show your allegiance to Him?

Direct students to work in the same teams and discuss what it means to love our neighbors as ourselves. Instruct each team to summarize its discussion and give a report. Ask: What does loving our neighbors as our-selves look like? Can we love God with all our being but not love our neighbor as ourselves? Explain. How does lov-ing our neighbor show our allegiance to God?

“With every feeling You give to make me whole, I want to love You” –

•On a large sheet of paper, create a list of ways to give to God, such as

“giving up my lunch period one day to pray for my lost friend,” or “turning down a date Saturday night to offer free babysitting for a single mom.” Challenge students to choose one way they will give sacrificially this week.

•It’s the entire self with all its emotions, desires, and personal characteristics that make each person unique.

•What does loving God with your whole heart mean to you? Soul? Mind? Strength?

Wrap UpEvery facet that the heart loves, the soul embraces, the mind understands, and the strength that acts must enter fully into a personal walk of faith with God. Every aspect of life falls under the need to know and serve God. One then must love God with a total com-mitment (heart), with your total self (soul), to total excess (mind, strength). Loving God should be over the top!

ThemeFaith

ObjectiveStudents will address and discuss the relationship of grace, faith, and works.

Warm UpWork It Out – You have two options for this opening activity.

•Physical Workout – Organize into teams and see which team can com-bine to do the most sit-ups and push-ups in 30 seconds. Each member of the team does sit-ups for 30 seconds, and each member also does push-ups for 30 seconds. After everyone has completed their two 30-second workouts, add the total number together for the team score. The team with the highest score wins the satis-faction of knowing they did the most sit-ups and push-ups.

•Mental Workout – Organize into teams and see which teams can solve a series of complex story problems most quickly. There are several books and websites that offer story prob-lems and brain puzzles. Find your own or visit rinkworks.com/brainfood for some interesting ones.

TransitionExplain that exercising your body and your mind are good for you. Ask, “How would you exercise your faith?” Let students think for a moment and if any offer thoughts, lead a brief discussion on the responses. After a short while, play the song. During the song, have students fill in the lyric blanks on their Student Guides.

The SongSay: “This song seems to be trying to get across the message that faith without works is dead. What does that really mean?”

Bible StudyRead Romans 3:20-28; Ephesians 2:8-9; and James 2:20-26. Explain that there are some big words in those verses: justified, righteousness, salvation, and redemption. Bible scholars love to discuss what all the words mean and what they don’t mean. Sometimes the conversations get so wrapped up in details that they miss the point:

God saves. We respond to what God has done.

Discuss these questions (and others that might come up):

•What do you think of those two statements?

•What does “God saves” mean to you?

•How are we supposed to respond to what God has done?

•What if we don’t respond?

•Does that mean that God hasn’t done what God did?

Explain that all of us make mistakes. We all fail doing what God wants us to do. The beauty of God’s grace and forgiveness is that we get another chance to respond to what He has done. Sometimes making a list of things you want to do is helpful. What would you like to put on the “Here’s what I think God wants me to do” list? What an awesome idea! I love ‘to do’ lists…but a list of what God wants me to do . . . very cool! Let students suggest items for the list. Write them where everyone can see. Then suggest that each person pick one or two of the items and try to do them this week. Doing the list doesn’t give them a “leg up” in the God club, but acting on the list is responding to what God wants.

Wrap UpGod saves. We respond to what God has done. Sometimes we mess up, but God doesn’t stop saving. God offers us another chance to do what He wants us to do. Let’s do those things.

Closing prayer: “Thank you, God, for saving us. Thank you for being so patient with us when we mess up. Help us to do what You want us to do. Help us to show love for You and for everyone. Amen.”

HANDS

ThemeEternal vs. Temporal

ObjectiveStudents will better understand what really matters.

Warm UpOpen with this series of questions that go from funny to serious:

•If all the food in world except spinach disappeared, what would you miss the most? (For me, it’d be dressing for my spinach salad!)

•What was cool when you were in another grade that is not cool now?

•What is something you own that might not have any value five years from now?

•What are some of the things that mat-ter most to you?

•How does trusting Jesus affect both life and death?

TransitionSay, “Life is made up of many things, and many of those things can easily be destroyed. We’re going to discov-er what matters most.” Hand out the Student Guides and introduce “Give Me Rest” by the Christian metal band, Hands.

The SongChallenge students to jot down any lyr-ics that make an impression on them. Play the song.

TransitionDiscuss:

•What do you think this song is about?

•What lyrics did you write down, and what made them stand out?

•Do people these days spend more time worrying about stuff or souls?”

Bible StudySay, “Let’s look at three Scripture passages that deal with what really matters in life.” Either divide into three groups, or work through the Bible study together. Although I’ve included some good words to fill in the blanks, there are plenty more words that will make the statements just as accurate.

Matthew 6:19-21 – Earthly treasure is temporary while heavenly treasure is forever.

•What are some really cool “earthly” treasures? (iPad, Lamborghini, pet Alpaca…)

•What are some examples of “heavenly” treasures? (Leading a friend to Christ, praying for others, serving Christ with your time, talent, and cash…)

•Do your peers seem more concerned with earthly or heavenly treasure? Explain.

•What are some obstacles that make heavenly treasures harder to focus on? (Possessive relationships, temp-tations, anything that a peer values more than time with God…)

Proverbs 22:1-3 – Having a good repu-tation is worth far more than being rich.

•Is being rich a bad thing? Explain. (No, but it does bring around more temptations and fakers.)

•What are some real reputation killers for teens? (Discipline issues, preg-nancy, cheating on exams, promiscu-ity, addictions, bullying…)

•How hard is rebuilding a reputation after an embarrassingly sinful life choice? Explain.

John 14:1-6 – There is no need to fear death for someone who believes Jesus.

•What scares you about death? (The process, leaving people behind, what will happen to me in eternity…)

•What does Jesus say about eter-nity? (Plenty of room, I will not for-get you…)

•How does someone get to heaven? (Only through Jesus!)

Wrap UpPoint students to the “What Really Matters” section on the Student Guide. Either play the song quietly (Can you play a metal ballad quietly?) or maintain silence as you challenge the students to write down their per-sonal thoughts on these two ideas:

•Their definition of what really matters.

•What they want people to remember about them when they’re gone.

Close with a prayer. Be sure to make yourself available for further questions and discussion after group time.

HYLAND

ThemeLust

ObjectiveStudents will gain a deeper under-standing of lust and how to combat it.

Warm UpShare a story about a bug bite, poison ivy, sunburn, or something else that made you itch badly. (If you want to share someone else’s itch story, check out this one from a married couple who is backpacking the world: vaga-bondquest.com/travel-tips/itchy-and-scratchy-bed-bugs-sand-flies-and-other-travel-hazards) Hand out Student Guides and pens. Ask, “What is the itchiest you have ever felt?” Allow anyone willing to share to tell his or her story. Upon hearing a few stories if your group is talkative, ask, “How long can you hold out before scratching an annoying itch?” Allow for answers. Then ask, “If you could escape your itch by running, would you take off?”

TransitionSay, “Unfortunately, scratching your itch usually makes it worse.” Ask, “Do you know what happens when you scratch poison ivy sores? Did you know lust is like a terrible itch, only worse?” Perhaps uncomfort-able silence pervades the room at this point. Let your question sink in a minute.

The SongSay, “The rock band Hyland, who hap-pens to be made up of Christians, has a great new song called ‘Fireworks.’ This song has a rockin’ blunt message about lust. Let’s listen.” Play the song.

TransitionAsk, “What is the story in this song?” (Guy and girl are attracted to each other in a potentially sexual situation.) Ask, “Did you hear a lyric in the song that grabbed your attention? Which one and why?” Then say, “There are some bold statements in the song. We’re going to put these bold lyrics alongside the real power in the Bible to gain more willpower—and ultimately learn to not scratch and spread lust’s sinful itch.”

Bible StudyWell I’ve been this way before and all roads point to the door

•When lust starts to happen, 2 Timo-thy 2:22 says… (Run, flee, get away fast!)

•What does a person risk by fleeing the situation?

•What does a person risk by staying put?

•Which is easier—fleeing or staying? Explain.

I’ve had quite enough of this lust disguised as love

•1 Corinthians 13: 4-7 defines… (What love is and is not)

•Is lust on the same side as love in any of the statements in this passage? Explain.

•Which is more difficult, loving or lust-ing? Why so?

Fireworks will only burn baby, there’s nothing left when our innocence is lost

•1 Thessalonians 4:1-8 tells us we are called to live a… (Holy life)

•How should knowing God affect a person’s sexual morality?

•What are some practical ways to avoid being burned by lust?

Strike a match and light the flame, there is no one left to blame once this arson consumes you

•In Matthew 5:27-28, Jesus says lust-ful desire is… (Just as bad as commit-ting the act)

•How should this passage affect someone’s thoughts about someone else?

•What is the right way to look at some-one you find attractive?

Still we say In God We Trust but set our hearts to self-combust

•James 1: 12-15 says God blesses those who… (Patiently endure temptation)

•Whose fault is it that we are tempted to lust? Explain.

•What is the result of giving in to lust?

Wrap UpRead Romans 13:12-14 to the group. Explain, “The last statement in Hyland’s song is; I will wait for you if it’s the last thing that I do.” Encourage the students to write a prayer about deal-ing with lust in the blank space on the bottom right side of the Student Guide. Play the song again quietly as the stu-dents respond to God.

LOVE COSTS EVERY THING

ThemePersecution

ObjectiveStudents will learn about global per-secution of Christians and will learn to pray for Christians suffering around the world.

Warm UpAsk, “Which is the most heavily per-secuted religious group in the world?” Give the group a chance to guess. After a few guesses, tell the group that Christians are the most persecuted religious group in the world today. Sadly, most people in America have no idea. Ask, “Why do you think so many Americans are ignorant to the fact that Christians are persecuted around the world?” Let students respond. Say, “Today’s lesson is all about a bet-ter understanding of what Christians around the world endure because of their faith.”

TransitionForm groups of 2-3 and give them five minutes to write as many facts as they can about the following countries: India, Iraq, and Colombia. Encourage students to use their phones to look up information if needed. After five min-utes is up give each group a chance

to share. Their findings might surprise you. Correct any false information that you can.

Explain that many Christians live in completely different settings and face completely different problems than we do. Persecution is a reality for most Christians in the world, and it exists because of two reasons. In some countries, Christianity is ILLEGAL: This means that it is against the law to convert to Christianity or even preach the Good News. Countries with “anti-conversion laws” include Iraq, Egypt and Pakistan. In some countries, Christianity is OPPOSED: This means that, while there is freedom of religion, majority groups are extremely hostile towards Christian minorities. This often leads to violence. These countries include Colombia and India.

The ClipHand out the Student Guides and say, “Thousands of Christians in dangerous settings continue to wor-ship and follow Jesus in the face of violent threats. We’re going to see the story of some of those Christians in a clip from a film called, Love Costs Every Thing. This video might be a little difficult to watch. So, to help you process, I’d like you to write your thoughts and questions on your Student Guide while we watch the

segment. When it ends, we will pray and then talk about what you saw.” Show the video.

TransitionImmediately after the clip, take a moment and pray for the church in Iraq. Then, ask a few students to share what they wrote. Give the group 5-10 minutes to talk about the segment.

Bible StudySay, “We had a chance to talk about how we felt watching these stories of persecution. How do you think Yusef felt? What about the others at Our Lady of Salvation?” Give the students an opportunity to discuss their opin-ions. Then read 2 Corinthians 4:7-11. Ask the students to tell what they think it means. Explain that Paul is telling the Corinthians that Jesus’ death and resurrection make enduring hardship in His name bearable. It doesn’t make it easy, but it does prevent Christians from dying in vain. Ask, “Now that we know that countless Christians face persecution around the world, what is our response? Should we just accept it?” Give students a chance to respond.

Say, “Our first responsibility to the per-secution church is to pray for them.” Read Hebrews 13:3. Say, “What are some ways that we as a group can

remember to pray for the persecuted church regularly?” Encourage your students to come up with three con-crete action steps. These could include making prayer bracelets or organizing a 24-hour prayer room. Whatever they decide, make sure you help them fol-low through.

Wrap UpSay, “Persecution is an ugly reality for many Christians around the world. We might still be questioning why it hap-pens. But remember, we should never feel sorry for those who suffer because of their faith. In ways that we’ll never understand, the persecuted receive a blessing because of their faithfulness. They don’t need our pity. They simply need our constant prayer.”

ThemeEternity

ObjectiveStudents will think deeply about pass-ing from this life into the next and trust-ing Christ with their eternal destiny.

Warm UpDeath Stix – Have students seated in chairs forming a circle with two volunteers (also seated) in the middle. The two students in the middle each have half of a pool noodle (the Death Stix). The goal is for the students in the middle to tap one of the students in the outer circle, place the noodle back on his or her seat without it falling on the floor and then taking the seat of the student in the outer circle before that student can grab the noodle and tag the opponent with it. If the student tags the opponent before he or she can take over their empty chair in the outer circle, the student inside the circle must go back to their chair inside the circle and try again. To make the game more nerve-racking, play music during the game and let students know that when the music stops anyone on the inside chairs is dead and out of the game. (This game idea is from pasto-r2youth.com.)

TransitionTalk about how death is often trivial-ized in our culture. We play games like “Death Stix” where we use the phrase “you’re dead.” We score video games based on how many “kills” we get. While those games can be fun, “death” is really a sobering topic.

The SongExplain that Owl City’s frontman, Adam Young, is an outspoken Christian. Owl City’s popular song “Galaxies” was, according to Adam, inspired by the “first-person perspective of the flight commander of the space shuttle Challenger that tragically exploded in 1986. It was inspired by the idea of a person leaving this life and passing into eternity. It’s a bold statement to Jesus Christ proclaiming that I will follow Him to whatever end. This song is a vivid portrayal of the idea that amid such tragedy, victory can be achieved through Christ and Him alone.” Play the song.

TransitionSay, “Can you imagine what those final seconds must have felt like for the flight crew of the Challenger, assum-ing they could briefly process what was likely about to happen before the space shuttle exploded? How would you react if you were told, ‘In ten sec-onds you will pass from this life’”?

Bible StudyAccording to the Bible, physical death is not the end of us. Often the Bible refers to death as “sleep.” Discuss:

•Describe a situation in which you would be willing to risk your own life.

•What, in your opinion, would be the scariest way to die?

•If you knew that you were going to die soon, could you face that reality with peace and confidence? Why or why not?

Read Hebrews 2:14-16 as a group. Discuss:

•What is the main point of these verses?

•What is significant about the state-ment that Jesus has destroyed “him who holds the power of death”?

•Why is thinking that Jesus “shared in (our) humanity” so incredible?

Say: “The song says, “Dear God, I was terribly lost / when the galaxies crossed / and the sun went dark / Dear God, You’re the only North Star / I would follow this far.’” Say, “Saying that we would follow Jesus anywhere is easy. Some of Jesus’ disciples made that promise and then later struggled to follow through with it.” Have the students work through the Thinking It Through section of their Student Guides. When they are finished work-ing, discuss their responses.

Wrap UpAsk, “If you were told for certain that on your way home from this gather-ing your life would end – could you walk out of this place with peace of mind? Why or why not? What is the key to being able to face eternity with confidence?” (If desired, conclude your gathering with an invitation for unbelievers to receive Christ as Lord and Savior).

Thinking It Through…•Which would be more challenging and why: risking

your life voluntarily to save someone else – or facing a life-threatening situation you did not choose?

•Obviously, astronauts are aware of the inherent risks involved in their line of work. What is a job that you would not do as a career under any circumstances because of the risk involved and why?

•Is there anything Jesus might call you to do that you doubt whether you could find the faith to obey? Share about that.

•When someone confidently declares, “I’m not afraid to die” – do you really think that is completely true? Why or why not?

•Does being scared to die demonstrate a lack of faith, or is it normal even for followers of Jesus? Explain.

ThemeGod’s Attributes

ObjectiveYour students will have a better under-standing of God’s attributes and how those attributes affect them.

Warm UpCloser To God With Balloons – Blow up about 50 medium-sized round bal-loons in various colors. Write words or phrases that describe attributes or works of God on half of the balloons with a black marker (use some from the song). Write words or phrases that can draw a person away from God on the other twenty-five balloons. Keep the two groups of balloons separate in large garbage bags. Divide the stu-dents into two teams. Divide room with tape. Put one team on each side.

Leaders keep throwing the good and bad balloons equally on each side of the line. Players pick up and read the balloons to determine if good or bad. If bad, they want to throw them to the other side. If good, they want to hold on to them. After the leaders have tossed all the balloons out of the bags, give your two teams a couple more minutes to play. The team with the most good after subtracting how many bad they have on the floor wins.

TransitionSay, “Let’s talk about some of the phrases on the balloons. Who remem-bers some of the phrases? What were some of your favorites?”

The SongSay, “We’re going to listen to a new song by Peter Furler. Peter was in the band Newsboys since 1985 and since 1996 he’s been their lead singer. In 2009 Peter left the Newsboys and is now pursuing a solo career. As you listen to the song try to be attentive to the words and see if you hear any familiar phrases.” Play the song.

TransitionAsk, “What did you think of the song? When you think about who God is, what are some of the images that come to mind?”

Bible StudyLook up the verses and match them with the corresponding attribute. Answers:1. Omnipresent – Psalm 139:7-102. Omniscient – 1 John 3:203. Omnipotent – Jeremiah 32:174. Sovereign – Lamentations 3:37-395. Eternal – Revelation 21:66. Immutable – Malachi 3:67. Perfect – Matthew 5:48

8. Holy – Isaiah 6:1-59. Wrath – Romans 1:1810. Grace – Ephesians 2:1011. Mercy – Ephesians 2:4-512. Love – John 3:16

Say, “After reading through all those attributes, we can agree that God is AWESOME! He is superior over everyone and everything. His essence, character, and actions are worthy of all praise. He is holy and perfect. God deals with His people based on His goodness, generosity, concern, and compassion, instead of on what we deserve. That’s called grace. Our God is a God of wrath and of love, mercy, and grace. He will live forever, and He invites us to live with Him in Heaven. The best part is, He knows us and knows everything about us. He cares about us and wants to be involved in every area of our lives.”

“I challenge you to invite Him to come and reach for you. Maybe you need grace or direction or just a hug from your loving heavenly Father. Let’s look at some of the areas you and I may need God to reach for us. As I read through this list, write the phrase that describes what you need. Or maybe you will need to write down your own phrase.”

I need God to REACH for me and…

•Whisper, “You’re still mine”

•Quiet all my fears

•Wipe away the tears

•Remind me that He has never given up on me

•Take all my hopes and dreams and do His will

Wrap UpPlay the song again. Ask students to invite God to reach into their lives. Close in prayer.

ThemeGod’s Love

ObjectiveStudents will learn about and be reminded of God’s amazing love for them.

Warm UpIf you love me, Honey, will you please, please, please smile! – Have student “A” kneel in front of student “B” and ask this question: “If you love me, Honey, will you please, please, smile!” Student “A” tries, with facial expres-sions and body contortions only and no touching, to get student “B” to smile. If student “B” can say, “I love you, Honey, but I just can’t smile” three times without smiling, he or she wins and “A” has to find someone else to work on. If he or she does smile, then “A” wins and sits in the chair of “B” – who then becomes the new “A.” Continue the game as long as time permits. Funny!!

TransitionWe all long to hear the words “I love you!” Sure, we hear them from our parents and maybe our siblings, but what we desire is for those three words to come from that one special person! That brings up these questions: “What is love? And, why do we seek it?” Not only do we seek it, we pursue it until it hurts!

The SongHave students listen carefully to the song. Encourage them to pay close attention to any concepts or ideas that jump out at them about being focused on God’s love, and how should respond to it.

TransitionDo you believe the statement, “You have promised not to leave me”? Rob-ert sings about longing to see God and His love in all his endeavors. Will God’s love indeed light the way for you and your journeys? Do you lean on Him for all your decisions, or do you act on your own? There are many decisions to make every day; do you acknowl-edge that God’s way and guidance are the best decision to make and the best way to follow? By our obedience, His love will guide us and light our way!

Bible StudyExplain the “Christian Love Cycle:” In John 15:9-14 the reader is taken down the first great love passage of the New Testament. Oh sure, there is 1 Corin-thians 13, but here John introduces us to the Love of Christ and His com-mitment to His followers known as His “friends!” In this verse we learn:

•The Father loves first

•The Son reflects that love

•We remain in His love as an act of obedience.

Christ introduces His followers to complete joy, love, friendship, and the transformation from a servant to a faithful friend.

•Christ wants us to embrace a joy that He already knew. (v.11)

•Christ’s wants us to embrace a love for others, as He has loved us. (v.12)

•Christ’s wants us to embrace the great-est love every put on display. (v.13)

•Christ’s wants us to embrace His commands. (v.14)

Have the students answer the Think It Through questions:

•Think about this statement: “Greater love has no one than this that he lay down his life for his friends.” What are your emotions when you read this? What better definition of “love” can you think of?

•Think of that one person that you choose not to be friends with – that one individual that you simply cannot stand to be around. Could you really “love” that person as Jesus does?

•What does being a friend mean? What is the greatest sacrifice a friend has made for you? What is the greatest sacrifice you have made for a friend?

•Do these verses bring a smile to your face? You have heard the words – what is your response?

Wrap UpHave the students reflect again during the playing of the song. When the song ends, encourage the students to pray silently for God’s love to be real in their lives. Have them pray for each other, their family, and their friends.

ThemeMotivation

ObjectiveStudents will demonstrate a renewed energy and motivation to live out their faith by evaluating the connec-tion between faith and actions in their own lives.

Warm UpTag-Team “So You Think You Can Move?” – This resembles the TV show “So You Think You Can Dance” but faster. You might want to set up a spotlight on the stage or in front of the room if possible, then using either just the audio track of this song or move-inspiring music (preferably without lyrics), you will give each student just 30 seconds to show what they can do moving to the music before they have to tag another student to do his or her thing. No repeats and no wimp outs. Have the rest of the students rate each participant in the area provided on the Student Guide. The game ends when the song ends. Tally the scores and present the winner with a small prize.

TransitionExplain that most people like to move to music, but what else moves you? What motivates you to do something different from you have been doing?

The SongInstruct students to use the Exploring the Song section as a listening guide to discover what Royal Tailor chal-lenges us to do. Here is the key:

•True religion is [love with hands and feet]

•We’ve been captured by [the unimportant]

•What will real faith do? [come through]

•What do we not need permission to do? [Go outside the doors and dream some crazy new dream]

•How can we put faith into action? [Do more than just believe]

•We are hope to [the broken]

•What were we made for? [to make a difference]

•When will real faith come through? [When I, you, we make a move]

TransitionWalk the students through their answers, discussing as is appropriate for your group. Ask, “What does real faith look like?”

Bible StudyRead James 1:22 from the New Living Translation of the Bible. Walk through each sentence with the group.

•Don’t JUST listen (i.e. don’t stop there)

•DO what it says (obey, follow through)

•So that you don’t TRICK yourself into thinking you’re something you’re not (Christ-FOLLOWER)

Ask students what parallels they can identify between this verse and the lyr-ics of this song. Then, divide the group into two teams (or an even number of teams using evens and odds) and give them the following assignments:

•Team 1: Identify the person whose birthday is closest to Labor Day (before or after). That person is the team leader. Have everyone on the team follow while one person reads James 2:14-18. Continue to refer to the Scripture passage to answer the questions in the Show Me Your Faith section.

•Team 2: Identify the person whose birthday is closest to Labor Day (before or after). That person is the team leader. Have everyone on the team follow while one person reads Matthew 7:21, 24-27. Continue to refer to the Scripture passage to answer the questions in the Faith You Can Build On section.

Give the teams about ten minutes to complete the questions; have each team share their answers with the oth-ers. Guide them where they have dif-ficulty grasping the concept of our faith being demonstrated by our actions to others, God and ourselves.

Wrap UpThe challenge of this song and of Scripture is to not just hear what God is saying in His Word, but to take action on it. Challenge the students to take a moment to evaluate themselves in the light of this truth. Have them rate their faith in the So What? sec-tion. How bright does your light shine? How solid is your foundation? Have students underline the word that best describes how their faith and actions match right now. Have them circle the word that describes the direction they are motivated to move. Close in a prayer for your students and for the commitments they are making to God, themselves, and those around them to live out their faith.

ThemeGod’s Love

ObjectiveYour group will understand that God’s love is beyond measure. Through dis-cussions, Bible study, and the song, your students will discuss what that love is and what it means.

Warm UpLove Charades – Before the students arrive, write on the board (or show on the projector or whatever you have) the titles of movies and songs that include the word, “love.” Here is a list of twenty: “Love Actually,” “To Sir with Love,” “Love is a Many Splendored-Thing,” “Shakespeare in Love,” “P.S. I Love You,” “From Russia with Love,” “Love Story,” “Can’t Buy Me Love,” “Sea of Love,” “What’s Love Got To Do With It,” “All You Need is Love,” “I Will Always Love You,” “Can You Feel the Love Tonight,” “Love Will Keep Us Alive,” “Where is the Love,” “Love Don’t Love Me,” “I Wanna Love You,” “Love Don’t Cost a Thing,” “Living Inside Your Love,” and “Runaway Love.” What about Muskrat Love?! The students need to be able to see these titles because as they get the correct answer, the title will be checked off. Also, have the titles written on pieces of paper, one title per piece of paper.

When the students arrive, either put them in teams or individuals. Teams/student will draw one of the papers and act it out. As the correct answer is given, check it off.

TransitionDiscuss:

•Do you think these movie and song titles really show the true meaning of love?

•Have you ever felt that you were in love?

•What do you think real love is? (…well, Love Will Keep Us Together…)

The SongHand out the Student Guides and encourage the students to write what they hear about love from the song. You will probably need to play the song twice.

TransitionHave the students share what they wrote. Ask them whether they agree with the statements and have them think of other adjec-tives that describe love.

Bible StudyExplain that the word “love” is used pretty loosely. People say, “Oh, I love this, or that, or this person, etc.” Have students raise hands if they have ever heard or said the fol-lowing: I love… pizza; my iPad; my dog; candy; that song; that group; that movie. Sometimes, “love” really means, “like a lot” and sometimes “love” really does mean love – I love God, I love my family, etc. But with the word love used so loosely, love has lost its true meaning.

Say, “What about God’s love for us or our love for Him and our love for others? What does the Bible say about real love? Let’s look up 1 Corinthians 13 and see how Paul describes love.” (Have each student read a verse.) From what they read in this chapter, discuss with your students what they have learned about love. Ask them if they think anyone can really live out real love when is comes to these verses?

Next, have someone read 1 John 4:8. Ask, “Who is love?” (God.) Now have them read verses 4-8 substituting the word “God” in place of “love” and “it.”

Have another volunteer read John 13:35. Ask, “How will people know that we are Christians?” (By our love.) Now, read the verses 4-8 substituting “I” or I am” for “love” and “it/it is.” Are we

really able to live this true love out in our lives? (Yes, but only with God living in us.) Now read the verses 4-8 again, substituting “God living in me” for “love” and “it/it is.”

Wrap UpSay, “Wow! Real love is deep and seems impossible to show. Even with God living inside of us, we don’t live up to 1 Corinthians 13’s description of love. We see that real, true love comes from God. With Him living in us as Christ’s followers we can work at demonstrating that love to others. This week, when it gets hard to show that kind of real, true love, remember that with God living in you, He will help you, remind you, and guide you to dem-onstrate His love in every situation.” Close in prayer.

TIM TIMMONS

ThemeGod’s Greatness

ObjectiveStudents will better understand God’s greatness – and will trust Him even when they don’t understand what He is doing.

Warm UpHand out the Student Guides and present this scenario: You have been eagerly awaiting the opportunity to try out for the [a sport that your students are interested in] team for a long time, just waiting until you got to the right age. After weeks of preparation and praying every day that you will make the team, the day is finally here! While you are on the way to the field, the car breaks down. You pray, but cannot get the car started, and no one can pick you up and get you there. You miss the tryouts. This was the only time available and it was clear that if you miss it, you have no opportunity to try out again until next season. When you get home, you decide to write a let-ter to God about it. Give students five minutes to write their letter in the Dear God section. Then, ask a couple of students to share their letters. Discuss how people respond when they’re disappointed and feel as though God didn’t come through.

TransitionExplain that life is full of both good and bad. Sometimes, we get exactly the opportunities we hope for – and sometimes, not. Sometimes, we have good relationships – and sometimes, we struggle. When we are in the bad times we often feel, a little bit, as though God has abandoned us and that He is either unwilling or unable to help us.

The SongHand out the Student Guides. Explain that this song is a reminder that God’s love is there in the midst of the worst times. Tim Timmons knows; he has been living with incurable cancer for over nine years. The song’s lyrics are a conversation between God and Job. Have the students paraphrase the conversation as they listen to the song. When the song has ended, give the students a little time to finish writing and then lead them in a discussion of what the conversation was about – God reminding Job who He really is and Job responding in humble accep-tance of God’s love and forgiveness.

Bible StudyExplain that many believe that Job is the oldest book of the Bible and that it is written in the form of a play.

•Job is a wealthy and happy man who loves and follows God.

•Satan tries to convince God that Job loves Him only because of the bless-ings and says he can make Job give up his faith in God.

•God is confident Job will remain faith-ful, so he allows Satan to take away Job’s wealth, health, and even his children.

•Job has three friends who show up to “comfort” him, but they mostly tell him that he brought this on himself.

•After many conversations with the friends, Job prays a long prayer and then tells his friends off for their lack of support.

•One of the friends responds to Job, and then God answers – which brings us to the song, “God’s Reply.”

Divide into four groups and assign each group to read one of the following passages and summarize what Job was telling God; Job 31:1-12; Job 31:13-23; Job 31:24-28; Job 31:29-40. Give them about three minutes to read the passage and write their summary in the Why Me? section of the worksheet, and then have each team share what they found.

Explain that God’s reply to this is much longer (most of chapters 38-41) than the lyrics in the song. Have the students describe what they think God

was trying to tell Job. Help them see that God was reminding Job of His greatness, that He was saying to Job, “Don’t forget that I’m in charge; I’ve got this.”

The chorus of the song is based on Job 42:1-6. Have all four teams read that passage and answer the questions in the Whole New Direction section.

•What new understanding did Job gain from God’s reply? (That his view of God had been totally inadequate. That God is MUCH greater than he had understood before.)

•How did he respond to his new understanding of God? (He recog-nized how small he was compared to God and was unhappy with himself for it which led him to repentance)

•Since Job was “blameless,” what was he repenting of? (His arrogance)

Wrap UpAsk the students to look back at the letter they wrote to God at the beginning of this study. Challenge them to consider how they would rewrite it now. Lead them to discuss some of the changes they would make, and then lead the students in prayer to have a greater under-standing of the greatness of God and to be more able to trust Him completely in every situation.

TRIN-I-TEE 5:7

ThemeGod’s Blessing

ObjectiveStudents will learn that God stands ready to bless them, but they must do their part and make decisions that will bless Him.

Warm UpTrue Lies – This oxymoronic game is played like this: divide your group into two teams. You’ll need a table and a playground ball. Stand behind the table and have the ball on the table. Call up a player from each team. You need to have prepared 10-20 state-ments about history (some true, some false; the more random the better.) When you read the statement, the player that yells his or her name first gets to say whether the statement is true or false. Correct answers score two points for the team. If he or she answers incorrectly, you yell “Incor-rect!” – and the other player quickly grabs the ball and throws it at him or her while that player is running to the safe wall or safe area. If the ball hits the other player before he or she is safe, the other team gets a point. The team with the most points at the end of the game, wins.

TransitionExplain that we encounter many deci-sions each day. On any day, we might have to make hundreds or maybe even thousands of choices. How we make those decisions results in a blessing or a consequence. Blessings are the result of godly choices; consequences are the result of choices we make because of our fleshly desires.

The SongHand out the Student Guides. Explain that in Trin-i-tee 5:7’s song “Over and Over” the singers share their thoughts about blessings. Encourage the students to answer the questions on the Student Guide as they listen. Play the song.

TransitionAsk for volunteers to share some of their blessings and how they know they were from God. Ask for volunteers to share some of the times they have experienced consequences based on bad decisions they have made

Bible StudyAsk your students to identify some of the times that God will bless us. List their ideas on a board or poster paper. Divide your group into nine smaller groups and give each group one of the beatitudes from Matthew 5:3-11. Ask them to read the verse within their group and then determine how they can receive the blessing. Have them come up with five possibilities of what the blessing might be. When they are finished working, have the groups come back together and share what they have discovered.

Wrap UpExplain that, just as the song states, God is willing to bless us over and over again. His blessing is based on what we are doing and how much we are including Him in our decisions. If we make decisions knowing it will bless Him, He will bless us in return. If we make decisions without considering how it affects God, He will allow us to experience the consequences without His hand on the outcome. I know I would rather have His hand of blessing on everything I do!

Have students write some decisions they know they need to make in the next few days. Ask them to consider how those decisions might turn out if God were blessing them versus how they would turn out if they had to deal with consequences. Close in prayer.

This Is What We Believe Centricity Music aaronshust.com Worship Lifehouse Doug [email protected]

7eventh Time Down hails from southern Kentucky—four best friends whose driving force is a shared faith in Jesus Christ and an aspiration to change the world. The majority of the songs on this album are calls to do just that. Strong guitar licks and interesting progressions make their message more than palatable.

Three songs: “What About Tonight” “Alive in You” and “Jesus Machine” will challenge your students to look at the difference they can make in their worlds – now.

“Do You Believe” will call your students to answer this in-your-face question for themselves.

“Get Me to You” “World Changer” and “Rusty Nails” lend themselves to worship and would be great songs to teach a youth worship band.

“Love Parade” rocks the message old school.

This is a solid second album for 7eventh Time Down – a band that has shared the stage with Skillet, Decyfer Down, Kutless, Pillar, Stellar Kart, Disciple, Family Force Five and many more. If your kids like their music loud, they’ll love this album!

Aaron Shust, from the small town of Aliquippa, PA, is also now the worship leader in his hometown church. On his website he describes it this way: “It is a little church – no fancy lights or great sound system. But it’s a part of the fabric of my life and my family’s life. My grandmother went to that church. My family has generations of roots there. It’s where I first heard the gospel and was baptized. I feel like this is my home, and these are my people. I left home years ago to pursue the opportunities that God put in front of me, and I value all that I learned and experienced during that time, but I think it took all those years and making several records to realize that what I really am at heart is a worshipper.”

Aaron’s passion for worship clearly shows through in the authenticity and clarity of his lyrics. This is one of those albums consistently crafted to explore its title. As it turned out the songs were assembled during a time of great trial for Aaron and his family. His two-year old son was experiencing a severe illness and hospitalized for months before his miracle recovery. Out of this experience was a forged a compilation pointing to the priority of knowing why we believe in God.

This album, while Adult Contemporary in style, will provide inspirational and devotional value for the youth leader as well as practical worship songs for use in the youth ministry setting.

I’m a youth pastor who is always looking for potential worship songs in the youth ministry and larger church set-ting. You will find some good options in the third track, “Jesus,” which clearly articulates the character and person of Christ. Use this the next time you are studying one of the Gospels. The fourth song is a re-working of the old Charles Wesley hymn, “Christ the Lord is Risen Today.” This new setting will bring the words to life once again. “I Will Sing,” the fifth track, also re-sets an old gospel song into a setting your youth will like as they sing about why they are singing! “Greater Is He” is a fist-pumping affirmation of the victory we have in Christ. Some of the other titles will also provide possibilities for reflection along with studies focusing on what we believe.

Alive In You BEC Recordings seventhtimedown.net Pop/Rock Collective Soul Mary Wilson [email protected]

10,000 Reasons, the latest release from British worship leader Matt Redman, is exactly what we have come to expect from the Passion artist – only better. The songs are brilliant; they have an ebb and flow that places you squarely in the center of the heart of worship. The fact that the entire album was recorded live simply adds to the atmosphere. You can crank up this music and be quickly transported into a sacred space.

The opening song, “We Are Free,” is a great song of worship and praise worship for any student ministry event. The song is loud and powerful, and calls you into an attitude of worship with a little bit of attitude of its own. Songs like “Holy” and “Magnificent” speak to the awe and wonder of our loving God.

As you would expect from Matt Redman, the over-riding theme of the project is worship. This album would be perfect for any retreat or study that focuses on the fact that even in this day of technology and amazing things, nothing is more awesome or more worthy of praise than God.

The entire album is loaded with songs you could be singing in worship right now; my personal favorite is “Where Would We Be?” Every song celebrates God’s love for us, and reminds that we are called to worship Him. That is a message that cannot be overused.

10,000 Reasons is more of what we have come to expect from Matt Redman, Chris Tomlin, and the rest of the Six Step Records artists. And there is not a thing wrong with that! Now get ready to worship!

Artist: Artist: Artist:

Unavoidable. Pervasive. Inescapable. Secular pop music is everywhere. Even if you can get your young Christian friends to switch their listen-ing habits from secular to sacred, they are still going to hear the top popular songs everywhere they go. In this section we provide you some

ideas to take advantage of some of the most popular secular songs. Use the opening questions, the thematic concepts and discussion ideas to spice up your Bible study, Sunday School lesson, camp/retreat meeting or outreach event message.

AdelleSong: Rolling Into DeepAlbum: 21

By: Cindy Engø[email protected]

Teaching Point:Love lost and betrayal

Opening Question:Have you ever been in love or had deep feelings for someone and that person let you down? Or, has your best friend broadcast something you told them in secret? If you feel comfortable to share, feel free to share your experience.

Discussion:“Rolling Into Deep” is a great song that expresses how each one of us has felt. Anyone who has been in love and hurt, or had a friend betray them, or been taken advantage of (which is probably all of us) can totally relate to her words, You had my heart inside of your hands, and it played it to the beat. And then there’s the anger and revenge that builds in each of us when we have been hurt and betrayed – You’re going to wish you’d never meet me. It’s payback time!

You might have tried to talk to your parents, youth pastor, or another adult, but they just don’t seem to get it or they try to make you think that what you are feeling is no big deal. There is Someone who does care about what you have gone through – the hurt feelings, lost love, and betrayal: Jesus! Yes, the maker of the universe in deeply interested in you and your feelings. He does feel your pain!

Psalms 58:6 states, “You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book.” (NLT) How you feel is so important to Jesus that He saves all your tears. Wow! Talk about feeling our pain—He really does!

Romans 12:17 warns us against trying to do any “payback” ourselves. But, that’s really hard to do. The first thing we want to do is make the other person realizes how much they hurt us, and we will hurt them just as badly. But, hold on – payback might be coming. Deuteronomy 32:35 tells us that God will take care of whatever payback is necessary.

Conclusion:Can we get past the pain of love lost, betrayal, or a loss of trust in someone? Can we leave our hurt in the hands of Jesus and let Him take of the problem? It really is that easy!

ColdplaySong: Every Teardrop Is A WaterfallAlbum: Every Teardrop IS A Waterfall

By: Doug [email protected]

Teaching Point:Hope

Opening Questions:What is your favorite type of music? When do you most often like to listen to your favorite music? What music do you like when you are in a good mood? What music do you like when times are challenging?

Discussion:Everyone has an opinion about music. Music has a way of connecting with us like no other. Music brings back memories. Music also brings hope. Many anthems have been written for movements and revolutions. Those songs have become leg-endary for their inspirational content.

In this song, Coldplay expresses the hope found in music even in the midst of trying times. The first few lines say, I turn the music up, I got my records on, I shut the world outside until the lights come on, maybe the streets alight, maybe the trees are gone, but I feel my heart start beating to my favor-ite song. The songwriter has found an expectation when circumstances say otherwise. The beat of the song and its inspirational lyrics move him to hang in there.

Read Psalm 42:5-6a. These words remind us we can look beyond our failures and disappointments to God, who came to save us. We can put our trust in Him. We can do this through praising Him.

The words of the Psalms are true but can feel hollow when we are in the middle of trials and tough times. God offers us other ways to expe-rience hope. We need to recognize the songs of our faith (whether we sing well or not!) that lead into the place of hope and out of despair. As we recognize these songs, whether it is a classic hymn or a contemporary “scream-o” worship anthem, they will offer us a tool for letting our emotions flow in the direction of our victorious Savior.

Conclusion:Identify three songs that “pump you up” and bring you hope in God. What is most inspiring about these songs? Talk to your friends and find out what songs move them.

Foo FightersSong: WalkAlbum: Wasting Light

By: Jessica [email protected]

Teaching Point:Salvation, Self-Examination, Identity in Christ

Opening Questions:Have you ever felt that you had lost your way, need-ed a refresh button on life, or that your relationship with God needed mending? Have you ever thought, “I just need a new beginning”? Have you wondered, “Will God take me back?” If so, and you are willing, please share that experience.

Discussion:“Walk” deals with the issue of wanting a second chance – wanting to learn how to walk again. The song is upbeat, yet it reveals someone who has been hurting and on his or her knees begging because he or she never wants to die.

This song to me sounds like a man who is hurting and calling out to God for a chance at a new life, forgiveness, and to be a reborn Christian.•Do you ever feel as if you need to learn how to

talk and walk again?•Have you ever felt as though you needed to start

over, that you needed a new life?•Have you ever felt a fear of death? What does it

mean to live forever to a Christian?

2 Corinthians 5:17 says that if you are saved you are a new creation. Your past and your sins are taken away – you have forgiveness and are a new person to God. You will learn to walk again in Christ and speak of Godly things not worldly things.

Read Psalm 23:4. Death does come to us all, but Christians should have no fear. Christ is with us at every turn – we should always seek comfort in him.

In John 11:25-26 Jesus says that we will never really die.

Read John 14:1-3. We need to put our faith in Christ; He went to prepare a place for us and He will return for us. So let’s not let our fear guide us, instead we should enjoy this time on earth. We should reach out to people and love them as Christ would and lead them to Him by our love. Become the new person He has led you to be; learn to walk and talk as Jesus would in all aspects of your life. And when the time is right, He will return for us!

Foster the PeopleSong: Pumped Up KicksAlbum: Torches

By: Carl Joneshttp://youthguy07.blogspot.com

Teaching Point:Violence, Fitting In, Despair

Opening Questions:Have you ever considered taking an extreme step to become part on the “in-crowd?” Maybe changing your personal style or doing something outrageous to draw attention to yourself? Or, engaging in negative behavior that would force others to notice you?

Discussion:This seems like a simple song until you begin to lis-ten closely and discover that it is all about shooting people. Someone named Randy is on the prowl, threatening to gun down all the kids who he sees as “cooler” than himself. He uses fancy shoes as a way of identifying those who seem to think they are better than he, and then warns them that they bet-ter be on the run; he is coming for them. We learn in the second verse that he feels ignored at home and is seeking attention any way he can get it.

Everyone needs to feel wanted and that they belong. Yet, we are all excluded from things every day. It was no different for Jesus – He was an outcast too.•What are some other examples of “pumped up

kicks” that your peers use to set themselves apart from those who are “less cool?”

•The shooter in our song thinks of himself as an old west cowboy armed with a six-shooter. What are some heroic images that may pro-mote violence in an attempt to fit in?

•When you feel down or depressed, to whom do you turn? What keeps you from going over the edge?

John 10:10 tells us that Jesus came so that we might live “the abundant life” – full of joy and excitement. We are called to live above our circum-stances, not under them. How do we keep from becoming so overwhelmed by the bad things in life that we take our despair out on society? Where does our hope come from?

Conclusion:Wanting to fit in and be accepted is normal. God granted us grace through Jesus Christ so that we would all be accepted in the family of God. How can you, as a follower of Jesus, make the “Ran-dy’s” at your school feel included and loved?

G. Love & Special SauceSong: Peace, Love, and HappinessAlbum: Superhero Brother

By: Ryan James [email protected]

Teaching Point:Hurt, Worry, Poverty, Faith, Hope

Opening Questions:If you could wish anything for the world, what would it be? What do you think this world needs the most? With all the hurt, hunger, thirst, and sickness that we see, sometimes we can just end up sitting in sad-ness and doing nothing. Have you ever felt like this? When? What do people sitting in sadness need?

Discussion:G. Love and Special Sauce have been rocking for years, and a few years back they went to Rio de Janeiro. While they were there, G. Love was inspired to write this song after spending time in the slums of Rio, and he dedicated this song to the children he met there. “We went in and played for these kids, and just the energy these kids gave back to us and the whole day was just joyous,” G. Love says, “My thinking was, why let this world weigh on your shoul-ders? If those kids can be so full of life and love and hope, then anybody can.”

In Matthew 6:25-34, Jesus gave his advice to those weighted down by the worries of the world. Read it, and then listen to G. Love’s “Peace, Love, and Hap-piness” or watch the video (see YouTube.) Do you think the world needs peace, love, and happiness? If everyone had these things, and treated each other that way, what would the world look like? Would it be fixed?

If we trust our worries to God and walk with faith in Jesus, the Holy Spirit will be working some big changes in us. Read Galatians 5:22-23 and see how this fruit of the Spirit is exactly what this world needs. If each one of these descriptions were truly lived by Christians, what would the world look like? What would your life look like if these were lived out?

Conclusion:Peace, love, and joy are exactly the attributes that a relationship with Jesus will work to create in you. Read John 13:34. Christians are supposed to be known by living out love in the world. We All the descriptions of the fruit of the Spirit, especially love, are things we DO. These aren’t things we do by sitting in church chairs. How are these, and how can these actions that the world needs, act out in your life today? What can you do for those that are hurt-ing around you this week?

Katy PerrySong: Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)Album: Teenage Dream

By: Nikki [email protected]

Teaching Point:Having fun God’s way.

Opening Questions:Have you ever been to a party where kids were using alcohol and making bad decisions? Were they doing things that went against your beliefs? Were they doing things that were breaking the law?

Discussion:You have probably heard your schoolmates discuss what they did over the weekend. Often their stories involve alcohol (or other substances) and bad decisions.•Why do teenagers party? What are teens

seeking when they do this?•What are some of the repercussions of

breaking the law?• If you are caught in a position where you

either do something wrong that your friends are doing OR you leave the party, which would you choose? Be as honest as possible with your answer.

•Do you tend to stay away from parties where drinking or drugs are involved? Why or why not?

•Make a “Pros and Cons of Partying” list. Which side of the list is longer?

Read Proverbs 23:19; 29-35 (The Message paraphrase is pretty straightforward.) Compare these verses with the song’s lyrics: There’s a pounding in my head, Is this a hickey or a bruise?, It’s a blacked out blur, Think we kissed, but I forgot, Trying to connect the dots, A warrant for my arrest, Yeah, I think we broke the law/Always say we’re gonna stop. See the connection? Katy’s way – the worldly way – is EXACTLY what is spoken of in verses 32-35. Read the passage from Proverbs again – this time, connect each verse to an above phrase from the song.

Conclusion:God’s Word is clear: your body is a living sacrifice to Him. He gave it to you so that you can use it to honor Him. The Bible is not a book of “don’ts”, it’s a book of “do’s” – “DO this and you will live a long life.” “DO this and you will be happy.” To have a happy and clean-lived life – DO it God’s way!

LMFAOSong: Party Rock AnthemAlbum: Sorry For Party Rocking

By: Kirk [email protected]

Teaching Point:Think.

Opening Question:Are you sure you want to lose your mind?

Discussion:Are you familiar with the internet acronym LMFAO? Look it up, and then, as you blush, try to think of other possible meanings for the abbre-viation. Ask your students if they can come up with some clean, intelligent alternatives. Here are some to get you started:•Learning Much From Alternate Opinions.•Lighting Markers For Alien Onset.•Linking My Fortune Around Opulence.•Locating Microscopic Fossils And Organisms.

LMFAO’s party-encouraging #1 Billboard hit encourages the listeners to lose their minds in the music and in the party lifestyle. (“Party Rock” is also a slang term for cocaine, though the song doesn’t seem to encourage cocaine use.) The video for the song, however, pokes fun at those who lose their mind in the party lifestyle. Instead of encouraging the lifestyle, the video shows people who have become zombie-like from lis-tening to and following the song’s directions.•What things are you so sure about that you

don’t ever ask questions?•What would you be willing to completely lose

your mind over?

Romans 12:2 encourages readers to be trans-formed by the renewing of their minds so that they can discern God’s will. Colossians 2:8 calls readers to be wary of being led astray with high-sounding nonsense. Isaiah 1:14-18 recalls God’s invitation to turn from hypocritical religious actions and instead “argue it out” with God.•What questions would you ask God if you were

sitting down for a chat right now?• What questions do you think would be off-limits?•What do you really wonder about?

Conclusion:Out in the world or even in church, thinking and asking questions is a good thing. No one has to check his or her brain at the door. God loves your questions. Think. Ask. Listen.

Mayday ParadeSong: Miserable At BestAlbum: A Lesson In Romantics

By: Doug [email protected]

Teaching Point:Difficulties; Disappointment

Opening Question:Describe the last time you were disappointed by something that didn’t work out as you planned. What were the circumstances? Was it a surprise or expected?

Discussion:We are guaranteed to experience disappointments in life. Difficulty is not a possibility; it is a certainty. It can come through events or things we may buy. Most often it comes through relationships we wish we had, or relationships we thought we had.

The songwriter seems to express defeat over a rela-tionship that thrived for a short period but now has died. Adding to the pain, the writer laments knowing that his former girlfriend is now with somebody else. This knowledge is causing sleepless nights and the feeling of being miserable at best.

Romans 5:1-5 reminds us of the hope we have in God. This hope begins with suffering which produc-es perseverance, perseverance produces character, and character which produces hope. The apostle Paul emphasizes this: Hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.

Throughout our life, things we desired but under-performed or simply malfunctioned will disappoint us. People we deeply trusted and who promised to support us but whose actions did not mirror their words will disappoint us. In those times we are tempted to wallow in our misery, point fingers, and refuse to lift our eyes to the bigger picture. If we choose to continue putting our hope in people and things, leaving God’s hope out of the equa-tion, this disappointing cycle will continue. The world calls us to hope in all it offers. Meanwhile, God pours out His love into our hearts.

Conclusion:What is disappointing you these days? How have you been responding to those disappointments? What are some healthy ways you have worked through those circumstances and what are some unhealthy ways? How can you better keep the hope of Christ at the center of your life?

Mumford & SonsSong: The CaveAlbum: Sigh No More

By: Dave [email protected]

Teaching Point:Life can be full of confusing voices, but we have a resource in God to overcome those voices.

Opening Questions: •What makes you feel confused and hopeless?•What advice do you sometimes hear from those

around you who are not Christians?• How do you respond to advice that you know is wrong?

Discussion: As the song begins, you have the sense that Mum-ford & Sons are talking to someone who has been a negative influence with lines like, It’s empty in the valley of your heart. The chorus makes a turn away from that negative voice, proclaiming, I will hold on hope… find strength in pain… change my ways.•Do you sometimes have difficulty keeping your hope

in Christ alive when people are discouraging you?•What do you think it takes to “hold on hope?”

In the second and third verses, the writer seems to gain more determination and strength, speaking more and more forcefully and with more and more confidence. First we hear, …let me at the truth, which will refresh my broken mind, and at the end, So make your siren’s call… I will not hear what you have to say.•What does it take to stand up against temptation

and negative voices?• The third verse says, You can understand depen-

dence when you know the maker’s hand. How do you think that relates to the ability to stand against temptation?

•Do you think you gain confidence each time you stand up? Explain.

James 1:2-4 says that trials are a proving ground for faith. You might see them as a spiritual gym for building faith muscles, making you strong and faith-ful. The challenge is to see trials and challenges as an opportunity to become more like Jesus, or as the song says, …to know how to live my life as it’s meant to be.

Conclusion:How strong is your faith? Are you working through some challenges? As you depend on God, you will experience victory after victory, and you will see yourself growing more and more like the person He meant you to be.

QueensrÿcheSong: Get StartedAlbum: Dedicated to Chaos

By: Mary [email protected]

Teaching Point:Life’s too short – get started making a difference.

Opening Question:Twenty years from now, what do you want the “lines on your face” to remind you of—what plac-es, good times, accomplishments, and friends?

Discussion:“Get Started” by Queensrÿche is a call to get started living, to change your view, your scene, and bet it all on something. They won’t suffer fools, and they are willing to break some rules. Twenty years in and they are ready to rev their engines, pick up speed, and be better.

Jesus calls us to get started too. As far as cul-tural rules go, His Word has this to say, “Don’t be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your minds.” (Romans 12:1-2) How do you renew your mind? You get started by assessing where you are now, your view, your same old scene. Then allow the Word to chal-lenge you, to shed light on where you are and where you need to be to please Him and to know what He wants for you.

What does Jesus want for you? What does He want for you to do? Romans 12:9-21 is full of great ideas: love sincerely, hate evil, cling to good, be devoted to others in brotherly love, honor oth-ers above yourself, be zealous for God (keep your engines revving), be joyful in hope, patient in afflic-tion, faithful in prayer, share with people in need, practice hospitality, live in harmony with others, don’t be proud but be willing to associate with people of low position, do not be conceited.

This is quite a list; which of these challenges would be the most difficult for you? Does the list over-whelm you? Jesus summed all this up pretty simply when He told us to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength – and to love others. Life is short – too short not to be zealous, not to pick up speed.

Conclusion:What needs to change in your life – what scenery, what view? What bogus cultural rules are you buying into that will keep you from getting started, going where Jesus calls you, and caring for people as He does?

Secondhand SerenadeSong: Take Me With YouAlbum: Awake

By: Joel [email protected]

Teaching Point:Love/Acceptance

Opening QuestionsWhat is love? What are some popular ways to express love? Why do you want to experience love?

Discussion:Everyone longs for acceptance. We spend tons of energy to find someone who truly loves us. Unfortu-nately, the rising divorce rate and our own feelings of rejection show that many people never find love.

Television ads capitalize on our desire for love and acceptance with the promise, “Buy our product, and you will experience acceptance.” Popular music also expresses opinions about how to experience love or how to share love or how love makes us feel. This song explores feelings of love; interestingly, many of the feelings this song explores are also found as expressions of God’s love for us throughout the Scriptures. Secondhand Serenade sings, I don’t have anything to hide. I don’t have anything. The singer declares, You started seeing right through me and I’m loving every minute of it. This is how we want to feel accepted. We want someone to see all of us and still accept us for who we are.

Psalm 139 speaks of God’s constant pursuit of a relationship with us. God knows us inside and out. This seems pretty scary when we consider all our flaws, mistakes, and actions of betrayal. The psalmist seeks to hide because he does not want to feel God’s probing eyes when he knows he does not measure up. Then, as the Psalm ends, the poet again declares that God knows him, but now he states this fact as a request. He has realized that even though God sees right through him, he experiences God’s full accep-tance. This is love. God is love.

Conclusion:How do you experience God’s relentless pursuit of you? Does it scare you and make you want to hide, or does it open you up to the reality that you are loved and accepted by Him? Have you acknowl-edged God’s complete acceptance of you?

SeetherSong: Country SongAlbum: Holding on to Strings Better Left to Fray

By: Barry [email protected]

Teaching Point:Humility, Healthy Perspective, Simple Truth

Opening Questions:What kinds of things do you hate when people post on their Facebook status? Did you ever meet some-one who had done heroic things but didn’t have a giant ego? Maybe they were really good at some-thing, but didn’t brag about it? Maybe you have met someone who has a quiet confidence, but when they speak, they are painfully honest and cut straight to the simple truths.

Discussion:What do you think “Country Song” is doing on an album by Seether? The title is almost out of place with their style, and the song is definitely not in the Country genre. It is almost as though the singer is talking to himself – you know, one of those con-versations with the mirror where you almost hate yourself, but maybe you are just focused on the negative that you did. What do you think – is he talking to himself or someone else?

Paul was a follower of Jesus who, after Jesus was gone, took up where the other followers left off and kept spreading the Good News around the known world. He really did a lot, had many bad circum-stances that might stop a normal man or slow down a normal woman. When he talked about those things, he always played them down; they were not something he would tweet about or post on his Facebook status. The most important thing to him was his discovery of forgiveness.

Read 1 Corinthians 15:8-11 and keep score on how many times Paul plays down his accomplish-ments. What do you read as the most important thing to Paul? What did Paul do that made this grace so meaningful?

Conclusion:How do we let God’s grace go to waste? What are some ways that we can downplay our accomplish-ments and focus on the simple truth?

Engaging Hearts And Minds In Worship

By Tim Timmons“Leading worship for students is usually a race to see who’s going to worship first – the students or the chairs!” One of my early ministry heroes encouraged me with this one-liner many years ago after I had finished complaining about how hard it was to lead students in worship. How sad and typically true this statement is – not only for students, but for adults, too. Sadder still is how often our worship sets are just a few songs thrown together at the last minute because there simply wasn’t time to do anything more. And yet we still wonder why most of our students walk into our gatherings and never worship beyond going through the motions – and sometimes they won’t even do that!

I understand that as a youth leader you are wearing about a thousand different ministry hats, worship leader being just one of them. So let me begin by saying THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for your investment into the Kingdom! What you do is important and valuable. As worship leaders (whether full-time, part-time, or volunteer), you have been tasked with something incredibly difficult, no matter what age your congregation is. My community defines “worship” as responding to all that God is with all that we are. “Responding” is the key word. One of our main goals/purposes as worship leaders is to lead people to honestly respond to God, whether it’s with joy, frustration, obedience, surrender, etc. When our people enter our gatherings, how can we encourage them to respond to God, not just the music, or the emotionalism, or the hype? How can we lead them to own their response to Jesus?

Try something with me. Right now, wherever you are, sing out loud, “How great is our God! Sing with me! How great is our God!” (Do it, even if it’s quietly in your heart.) Now, were you responding to the goodness of God, or simply doing what I asked you to? Was your mind and heart engaged with God, or were you thinking about all the things on your plate today?

Let’s try this again, but this time I want you to pause, close your eyes, and think. What are you grateful for today? How has God shown himself to be great and loving in the past year? What are the areas in your life you need Him to be great right now?

Now sing, “How great is our God! Sing with me! How great is our God! And all will see how great, how great is our God!”

How was this time different from the first? Did you sing more honestly? Did you own the words after responding to God through your own life lens?

One of the best ways I’ve found to lead people to own their response to God is through asking intentional questions of the songs being sung. One of my favorite examples of how a good question can turn a song around came about last Christmas. One of the young worship leaders at our church was struggling with leading Christmas carols that he felt were trite and powerless. I asked him what his favorite carol was and after a short pause, he identified “Oh, Holy Night.” I asked him to think of a question that would help him own the song and help the people own and respond to Jesus through the song. I went to his service the next night to support and encourage him and honestly, I was blown away by the impact of what happened next. Before he began the song, he asked, “When was the last time your soul felt its worth?” The room was suddenly engaged as it hadn’t been before!

As leaders, we can only say, “Hey guys, let’s really think about the words to this song” so many times before it is numbing and ineffective. Consider the songs you use. What is the heart behind each song? What is a truth about God or humanity that the song conveys? What intentional questions can you ask to help people own these songs? How can you help them identify the areas in their lives that need these powerful truths?

If we are deliberate about engaging the minds and hearts of people in spirit and in truth, there’s a chance we can lead them to beat the chairs in the race to worship.

Serving In Solidarity

By Aaron Keyes

For five years my wife and I have invited worship leaders from around the world to spend a season in our home, learning, growing, and soaking in the Lord. The experience has been unreal; we’ve had people stay anywhere from a week to six months and each time we launch another one of these leaders out, we sense God’s affirmation.

One of the first things we do is to take them to our senior pastor’s house. We eat dinner, laugh, and share stories, often until late in the night. I hardly think anything of it, but our guests don’t stop talking about it. Apparently, a friendship between a worship pastor and a senior pastor is rare. This has to change.

Several worship “movements” are having major impact in a lot of churches. They each share a common denominator: intentional solidarity between the senior leadership and the worship leadership. For instance, Passion isn’t just Louie Giglio; it’s Louie and Chris

Tomlin. Hillsong’s not just Brian Houston; it’s Brian and his worship-leading son Joel. At Bethel Church, the “Jesus Culture” HQ, Bill Johnson’s son Brian is the primary worship pastor.

Interesting.

In 2 Kings 3, Elisha was beginning his prophetic ministry. He had Elijah’s “double portion” and had shown signs and wonders – but the king was asking him to prophesy. He made an interesting request in verse 15: “Bring me a harpist.” Seems like an odd time for a jam session, but watch what happened: “While the harpist was playing, the hand of the Lord came on Elisha.”

Elisha’s prophetic potential wasn’t released until the musician played. This shows a connection between the musical and the spiritual. Think of David playing his harp for Saul; under demonic stress, Saul found deliverance through David’s guitar playing.

I’d venture to say that if it weren’t for Tomlin, Louie would not have the voice that he does. (And visa-versa.) If not for the music of Hillsong, the teaching influence wouldn’t be what it is today. The same is true for Bethel without Jesus Culture. There’s a spiritual aspect to this beyond the successful marketing and popularity of music. God is looking for teams who lead in solidarity, and He releases more into relationships than individuals.

I’ve experienced this personally. When I have a close relationship with a pastor, as opposed to a pastor whom I’ve just met, I experience a real difference when leading worship singing. The significance of that connection cannot be overstated. A word from a friend I love brings something out of me that wouldn’t be released any other way.

There are scores of great preachers who are widely respected and regularly heard via podcast and broadcast. There are just as many great worship music leaders. If we want the hand of the Lord to move on our ministries, then we must align ourselves - worship leaders and senior pastors - with one another.
