PRESIDENT, SKICAN

3

I grew up a “Skican kid”. My brothers and I spent hours in the parking lots of Mt St Louis Moonstone and Blue Mountain, tucking “Skican exclusive” flyers under windshield wipers. I fondly recall the fashion shows at the Toronto Ski Show, and the Warren Miller movies at Roy Thompson Hall, where Skican handed out thousands of ski holiday brochures. And yet, it is only because of these last four years that I’ve been working at Skican that I have an appreciation of the impact that we’ve had on hundreds of thousands of skiers, ski resorts and the winter tourism industry.

Recently, owner of Lake Louise Ski Resort, Charlie Locke, sent an email in which he credited my dad, Robin Nasmith, with starting “…the winter (destination) ski tourism industry, not only in Banff, but in Canada”. It’s hard to imagine a time when Banff wasn’t filled with skiers and snowboarders in the winter months, but back in 1969 the focus was on summer tourism. Fifty years ago, Skican chartered flights and sent their first group to Banff for an unforgettable week of skiing. The trip was a success, word spread, and so began the destination ski industry in Canada.

O v e r t h e pa s t 5 0 y e a r s , w e e s t i m at e t h at S k i c a n h a s b r o u g h t o v e r h a l f a m i l l i o n s k i e r s t o d e s t i n at i o n s a r o u n d t h e w o r l d , 8 0 % o f t h at t o W e s t e r n C a n a d a .Skican has owned and sold one hotel, managed properties, chartered thousands of planes, and worked with hundreds of ski clubs and ski resorts around the world. In 1969 the challenge was that travelling to Europe was less expensive than travelling to Western Canada. Robin saw an opportunity and Skican was born. These days skiers are looking for unique experiences, whether that’s trying out backcountry skiing, or visiting a bucket list destination like Chile, Japan or New Zealand. But most of all, skiers are looking for great ski experiences. That hasn’t changed and we bet it never will.

Turning 50 means you have lots of stories to tell, some hard-earned wisdom and many wonderful friendships. We want to thank you for the last 50 years and promise to continue to provide you with the greatest service available when it comes to ski holiday planning.

“I heard about Skican years ago from some ski friends, so I decided to check it out. I’ve now been on three Skican trips — all of them Ski Escapes: Avoriaz, France in January 2017, Les Arcs, France in January 2018, and Valle Nevado, Chile, in August 2018. I love Ski Escape trips because I’m in a new place, meeting new people, and sometimes I even meet up with friends from previous trips.” - Ian

“Initially, I decided to book a Ski Escape with Skican because of the cost and the fact that I was travelling solo. But now, I’ll continue to book my ski vacations with them because the Skican staff have always been so friendly and upbeat. I know everything is looked after, and I can just relax. Also, it’s great to have guidance at the resort getting you to the sweet spots.” - Jon

Niseko Ski Resort is the most famous ski destination in Japan, thanks to its vast terrain, beautiful winter woods, and legendary powder. “This trip was a great all mountain experience. We enjoyed the remote location and the Assiniboine Lodge for its superb food and its atmosphere which allowed for great bonding with fellow guests; the awesome silence of the mountains and stunning scenery (and the ‘digital holiday’) and the history. One of our favorite times of the day was to relax in front of the fire with a cold IPA, a good book, and lots of interesting conversation. The skiing was wonderful and the guides were outstanding, Claude and The Hammer, 20 year plus veterans of Heli Skiing industry - their expertiseand confident, entertaining manner with clients was great.” - Charlie and Judi

We love to ski because it brings our family and friends together, and we get to build memories we’ll have for years to come. W i n t e r i s f o r F a m i l y !Winter is often seen as a time to endure with cold wet days filled with bundling up, shoveling driveways, and rushing indoors to stay warm. What is a family that wants to play together supposed to do?

It’s simple really: Make winters what you want them to be.

Skiing and Snowboarding are two exceptional examples of ways families can play together regardless of the cold and snow. These sports can be enjoyed on your own or as a group regardless of ability, and can be learned and appreciated for a lifetime.

Local hills like Glen Eden offer an incredible array of lesson offerings, tickets, and passes. Whether you are totally new to the sport, or a seasoned pro, they have something for you. These smaller “feeder” clubs are what help drive the sport by catering to those new to the sport, and making it possible for families to sneak out after dinner or on a weekend and make a few turns close to home.

To start, plan a day trip to your local hill and/or sign your kids up for a lesson. Glen Eden has rentals, and a walk in lesson program to help the new skier or boarder get started. With some simple food, and other fun taking place at the hill, a day out on a weekend or evening can quickly become the highlight of the week for the family.

What starts with an evening trip to Glen Eden or your local hill on a weekend can lead to memory making family time that will get you out in the fresh air, active, and engaged. All without the help of a phone or video game console. Between the terrain park, the race course, the fire in the lodge, or other fun taking place around the hill, there is something for everyone. Before you know it, your family is considering a family trip at March Break using Skican!

Bottom line: Winters are for Family. Skiing and Snowboarding are for families. You cannot change the fact that it’s going to snow, that it’s going to be cold, or that you are going to need to shovel that drive. You can however make the most of it. Get your family started this season. Plan a day trip, take a lesson, get yourself sliding. Watch for the smiles. Make memories and make the most out of winter. Glen Eden is one of many incredible local spots to get your start! Your family will thank you for it.

Questions? Give us a call, let us know how we can help! Let’s get you started right!

THE DEETS• The Portillo ski resort is a great place to get away from it all, meet new ski friends, and enjoy the fun nightlife. Warren Miller loved Portillo so much that the resort has been included in his list of the top 10 ski resorts in the world. So Portillo Chile must be pretty special! • There is only one hotel, and it’s legendary. There’s not much else there - which is a huge part of the appeal. The hotel only holds about 450 people, and those are the people with you from Saturday to Saturday. No one else. That means you have a world class ski area that you’re sharing with very few others. No lift lines. No hassles. Great service. The spectacular setting of Portillo is also a major draw card. Stunning views are afforded by the combination of the craggy peaks of the towering Andes Mountains, the emerald waters of Laguna del Inca, and the steep snow-covered slopes. • The skiing is great: It is above the tree line and compact with incredible terrain for all levels. Extraordinary off-piste skiing is reachable with or without hiking, and the Roca Jack is one of the world’s great runs. The powder is Colorado quality, and the weather in mid-August is comparable to early spring: -6 to 2 degrees and tons of sun. The average annual snowfall is 7.4 metres (about 25 feet). The snow storms are typically short and intense, and are followed by bluebird days when the spectacular vistas can be fully appreciated. This is also a training ground for many national teams – USA, Canada, Austria, Norway, Japan and Italy

A FEW TIPS• Take a lesson. The ski school has some of the world’s best instructors including Mike Rogan and Robin Barnes, so people at all levels tend to enroll• Relax and spend high quality time with family, friends and new friends• Practice ‘siesta’ after skiing then swim, eat fantastic food, drink Chilean wine, head to the bar, head to the disco, sleep. Ski repeat• A GS course is set most days and is available at no extra cost. Run it as many times as you’d like. On Thursday, there is a race open to all guests, and it is great fun. Afterwards, they host a party with awards for all ages

THE DEETS• Located on the northern island of Hokkaido (60 miles from Sapporo) is Niseko, Japan’s largest and most popular ski resort. It is dominated by nearby Mount Youtei, and extinct volcano. Its outstanding success can be summed up in one word – SNOW! Receiving over 15 m (50 ft) of light dry powder on average with a 915 m (3000 ft) vertical, amazing terrain via 40 lifts – this is a big mountain. Every type of skier or rider can find something at Niseko – off-piste, out of bounds and on piste greens and blues. Niseko is a ‘Ski what you can See’ resort. The peak season runs from December to late February and it is not uncommon in January or February to be skiing waist deep in powder (called Japow) • The resort is comprised of three separate village areas – Grand Hirafu, Higashiyama and Annapuri. Hirafu has the most life and choices of interesting bars, shops and restaurants offering traditional Japanese and Western cuisine, and unique après entertainment. THE DEETS• This is a very unique mountain destination. You access the resort area only by rail and exit at the highest station in Europe at 3475 m• Wengen is a famous village and busy all year around with tourists. It was created in the 1890s as a summer destination on a rail line. The British, one century ago, persuaded the Rail Co. to keep the train running in the winter. They thought people would be interested in ‘training up’ and ‘skiing down’. They were right• The ski area suits intermediates best (112 km of pistes) and Grindelwald in the next valley. The Jungfrau area lift pass also covers the separate ski areas of Mürren (linked by cog railway and then cable car) and Grindelwald First (reached via Grindelwald village, where there’s a bus)• The village has a short main street and is reached only by cog railway and is largely traffic-free, although there are electric vehicles run by hotels and a few petrol vehicles including taxis. The railway continues up the mountain, as one of the ski lifts

MUST DOS• Après is fairly quiet and dignified. Try the Tanne or the Rocks Bar• Beginners should check out the long blue-marked trails leading from the mountain station of the Fallboden chair lift via Kleine Scheidegg to Brandegg• Advanced skiers, take the Eigernordwand chairlift up to 2,320 meters and the Eiger Glacier. This also marks the starting point of the red Punchball run

FACTS• Home to one of the world’s best known and toughest ski race courses – the Lauberhorn. The annual Lauberhorn World Cup downhill race takes place each January

What Else Should I Bring?• Bathing suit. Got a hot tub in your hotel or chalet? Bring a bathing suit so you can go for a soak after a long day on the slopes. You’ll thank us later.• Hand warmers. While they’re not for everyone, hand warmers can be great for those long chairlift rides — especially if you have young kids who get chilled easily. Pack a few pairs as an emergency.• Water and snacks. If you don’t want to make frequent stops, it helps to bring a water bottle and some snacks to stay hydrated and energized on the slopes. The chairlift line is a great spot to bust out these goodies for hungry kids. We recommend granola bars, trail mix, and other portable foods.• Portable phone charger. Going to be splitting up on the hill? Make sure that your phone doesn’t die on you. Portable phone battery chargers cost between $15 and $40, work with USB cords, and can provide an emergency option for getting in touch with friends and family.• Backpack. Where are you going to carry everything on our list? While you may decide to stuff things into your pockets, we’ve found that it’s helpful for one member of your group to bring a small backpack.

What Gear Should I Bring?• Snowsuit. The most essential piece of your skiing wardrobe is a warm, water-resistant snowsuit, either a separate jacket and snowpants or a full-piece snowsuit (or onesie). Don’t skimp on this — you want a good jacket, preferably with a hood, and warm pants.• Base layers. We typically suggest finding a synthetic/non-cotton, moisture-wicking, and breathable base layer (both shirt and pants). This base layer is often colloquially referred to as ‘long underwear’. For a longer trip, it helps to have two sets, so you have an extra if the first gets wet or needs to be washed.• Mid layers. It’s helpful to have a moisture-wicking and breathable mid layer to stay warm on cold days. This can be a fleece or wool sweater that is optional and easy to remove on warmer days.• Socks. Good socks are incredibly important for keeping your toes warm on cold days, especially with rental ski boots. Find some warm wool or synthetic ski socks that are moisture-wicking and breathable — and bring multiple pairs. Your socks will get stinky. You’ll want to change them.• Gloves or mittens. A good pair of warm gloves or mittens is another essential part of your ski gear. There is some debate about which is better; mittens tend to be warmer, while gloves offer more dexterity. It’s up to you to choose — just remember that if your fingers aren’t warm, you won’t have much fun.• Helmet. Make sure you invest in a good, well-fitting helmet. Even experienced skiers will have a bad tumble sometimes and a helmet will ensure that you stay safe.• Goggles. If you’ve never been skiing before, you may not understand how difficult it is to ski without goggles. Goggles shield your eyes from blowing snow, allow you to see in flat light conditions, and protect you from harmful UV rays. Ever seen a ski goggle tan? It’s a thing.• Outerwear. Most skiers will bring extra outerwear to keep your face and head warm. Depending on the conditions, this can include a balaclava, face mask, neck warmer, or all of the above. In cold weather, this gear can be essential at preventing frostbite and allowing you to keep skiing.• Ski Equipment. It almost goes with saying, but if you own ski boots, poles, or skis then you should bring them with you. Even if you decide to rent skis, it helps to have some of your own gear as well.
