Page 14 Grass & Grain, March 19, 2019

January, February, and early March always give us a fertilization window for our cool season forage spe-cies. Except for 2019, that is. Mother Nature is work-ing overtime this spring to

keep field work at bay, and that means that some of our brome and fescue hay fields or pastures have yet to receive fertilizer. What’s that mean for 2019 forage production?

For starters, let’s not disregard the effect that weather will have on this year’s crop. 2018 served as a great example of what happens when we go di-rectly from winter to sum-

mer. Cool season grasses prefer temperatures rang-ing from the 40s to the mid-70s. Optimum growth occurs in that window. If the time frame for growth in that temperature win-dow is reduced, growth may be compromised as well. When temperatures consistently reach the upper end of that tempera-ture spectrum, cool season species tend to move to-wards reproduction, reduc-ing the vegetative growth we prefer for higher yields. Fertilizer rate/timing/etc… won’t change what condi-tions our weather from this point provides us.

Research in Kansas in-dicates that good yields can occur from fertilizer applications even in to late March or early April.

Again, temperature has a lot to do with how well that holds true, but in general, even later fertilizer appli-cations can result in good yields. That said, the high-est yields generally result from fall applications over spring. Fall applications of nitrogen and phosphorous stimulate root growth and produce more tiller buds that result in more stems (and higher yields) the fol-lowing spring. Spring ap-plications might result in an increased protein level (if harvest is timely), but yields are generally lower when compared to fall ap-plications.

While we’re on the topic of fertility, pro-duction losses tend to be ‘blamed’ on the nitrogen component of the fertil-ity program, when other nutrients may well be the culprit. Cool season forag-es require about 12 pounds of phosphorous and around 40 pounds of potassium per ton of hay per acre. Soil test results would sug-gest that phosphorous has

been deficient in many of our hay stands for years with potassium becoming a greater concern. Don’t forget these important nu-trients as well.

While there’s reason to be concerned about the window of opportunity we have for applying fertilizer to our cool season grass stands, there’s no need to panic – yet. Think of your forage production potential as a wooden barrel with every stave of that barrel representing the factors af-fecting production. Tem-perature, water, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, cutting height, harvest tim-ing, etc… are all staves of that barrel. If any one of them is compromised (and we haven’t even discussed pH levels… or weed con-trol… or…), forage pro-duction can be sacrificed as well. Our best bet at this point is to do the best we can to continue to im-plement best management practices so that we can optimize production as we move forward.

Weather conditions affect fertility management of cool season forages

Hay market trade activity is light to moderate. Demand remains moderate and prices have remained steady for all hay types. According to NASS, topsoil moisture supplies rated 0 percent very short, 1 short, 55 adequate, and 44 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 0 percent very short, 1 short, 71 adequate, and 28 surplus. As Mother Nature begins to loosen her grip on winter, there seems to be a hint that some farmers will begin to turn loose of hay they have been keeping back for their own use. If you have any extra hay to sell and/or need hay here in Kansas, use the services of the Internet Hay Exchange: www.hay-exchange.com/ks.php.

Kansas Hay Market Report

China made its first sig-nificant purchase of U.S. sor-ghum since China self-initi-ated anti-dumping and coun-tervailing duty cases against the commodity in February 2018 followed by a 25 per-cent tariff on sorghum and other U.S. commodities in June. A sale of 2.6 million bushels was reported by US-DA’s export sales report for the week of Feb. 28.-March

7, 2019. In response, Na-tional Sorghum Producers Chairman Dan Atkisson, a sorghum farmer from Stock-ton, released the following statement:

“This vessel purchase is great news for U.S. sorghum, and we are thrilled to see it on the books going into the 2019 planting season as hopefully a first of many. We look forward to returning to

trade with our largest export partner, and we are encour-aged by not only this sale but the reported 2.2 million bushel sale to Spain, as well. We believe today’s news is a direct result of meetings be-tween our two nations’ lead-ers, and we appreciate both administrations continuing to press forward to achieve a long-term agreement in U.S. and China trade relations.”

Aerial surveys will begin March 15 and run through mid-May in five states con-taining lesser prairie-chick-en habitat. The surveys are conducted annually by the Western Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (WAFWA) to document population trends and how

the bird is responding to management strategies identified in the Lesser Prai-rie-Chicken Range-wide Conservation Plan.

The range-wide plan is a collaborative effort of WAFWA and the state wild-life agencies of Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas

and Colorado. It was devel-oped to ensure conservation of the lesser prairie-chicken with voluntary cooperation of landowners and industry. The plan allows agriculture producers and industry to continue operations while reducing impacts to the bird and its grassland habitat.

“This survey provides the data for annual estimates of the lesser prairie-chicken population across the five states,” explained Roger Wolfe, WAFWA’s Lesser Prairie-chicken program manager. “These popula-tion estimates are critical in helping us guide deci-

sions related to conserva-tion efforts targeting lesser prairie-chickens and their habitat.”

The surveys will be conducted by helicopter in locations chosen randomly within lesser prairie-chick-en range, which is part of the methodology strategy.

In previous years, some of the fly paths prompted calls, which is why WAFWA is providing notification about the start of aerial survey work.

Preliminary results from this year’s surveys will be available on July 1.

President signs bipartisan PRIA into lawU.S. Senate Committee

on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry chairman Pat Roberts, R-Kan., and Ranking Member Debbie

Stabenow, D-Mich., said President Trump has signed the Pesticide Registration Improvement Act (PRIA) into law, bringing certainty to the agriculture industry and other stakeholders.

“This law will ensure farmers, consumers and others have an improved process when registering and evaluating the use of pesticides,” said Roberts. “The bill was approved by the Senate unanimously

and represents the concerns of all stakeholders.”

“PRIA means certainty for agriculture, farmwork-ers, and consumers,” said Stabenow. “I’m pleased the President acted to sign this long-overdue legislation into law to help farmers protect their crops while also providing important protections for farmwork-ers and their families.”

PRIA established a framework for EPA when

registering pesticides. The original intent has been to create a more predictable and effective evaluation process for affected pesti-cide decisions by coupling the collection of fees with specific decision review periods. This legislation includes technical chang-es and extends authority for EPA to collect updated pesticide registration and maintenance fees through FY 2023.

KCA regional meeting to include BQA CertificationKansas Cattlemen’s As-

sociation (KCA), in part-nership with Merck Animal Health, will host a region-al cattlemen’s meeting in Yates Center to discuss in-dustry topics on the eve-ning of March 26, 2019 beginning at 5:30 p.m. The meeting will take place at the 4-H Community Build-ing. The meeting will in-clude BQA Certification with Dr. Dan Thomson and presentations by Dr. Mark Corrigan with Merck and KCA CEO, Tyler Dupy. A USA-Beef meal will be served. The meeting is free and open to the public.

The meeting will kick off with BQA Certification provided by veterinarian, educator, and DocTalk host Dr. Dan Thomson. Dr. Thomson is recognized in-ternationally as a leader in animal welfare, beef cattle production and cattle health management. Dr. Thom-son’s work has been pub-lished hundreds of times, and he has conducted over 60 invited talks internation-ally on his research and field experience on the in-teractions between produc-tion management, environ-ment and nutrition on the

health and well-being of beef cattle. Dr. Thomson’s research program has been granted over $35 million with over $15 million of those funds coming with him as the primary inves-tigator.

Beef Quality Assurance is a nationally coordinated, state implemented program that provides systematic in-formation to U.S. beef pro-ducers and beef consum-ers of how common-sense husbandry techniques can be coupled with accepted scientific knowledge to raise cattle under optimum management and environ-mental conditions. BQA guidelines are designed to make certain all beef con-sumers can take pride in what they purchase and can trust and have confidence in the entire beef industry.

Dr. Mark Corrigan, a Merck nutritionist, will speak about herd health, strategic de-worming pro-grams, and facts about im-plants & their value. Dr. Corrigan gained his exten-sive research experience as the beef technical services manager at Lallemand Animal Nutrition. Corri-gan previously managed

diverse research projects, as well as marketing and communications efforts, for animal health and nutrition products in the U.S. and globally. He also has au-thored or co-authored more than 40 scientific articles, abstracts, symposium pro-ceedings and presentations on a variety of beef cattle nutrition, health and per-formance topics. He has been a Merck nutritionist for over six years.

KCA is actively sup-porting independent cattle producers in Topeka and Washington, D.C. Our staff will update attendees on the current work with legisla-tion as well as other proj-ects and initiatives.

Page 22 Grass & Grain, March 19, 2019

By Sandra AvantFoot-and-mouth disease

(FMD) virus spreads much more aggressively in pigs than previous research sug-gests, according to a new study by U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) sci-entists.

The study, recently pub-lished in Scientific Reports, shows that pigs infected with the FMD virus were highly contagious to other pigs just 24 hours after in-fection—long before show-ing any clinical signs of infection such as fever and blisters.

Foot-and-mouth disease continues to be the most important foreign disease of livestock worldwide, said Jonathan Arzt, lead investigator and veterinary medical officer with US-DA’s Agricultural Research

Service (ARS). Although the United States has not had an FMD outbreak since 1929, this highly conta-gious viral disease, which is sometimes fatal, is still considered a serious threat to U.S. agriculture. If in-troduced into FMD-free countries like the United States and Europe, it could cost billions of dollars in losses to the economy from trade bans and eradication, which often includes un-avoidable euthanasia of a huge number of affected animals.

Vaccine protection of pigs is notoriously chal-lenging. Vaccinated pigs still shed infectious virus and potentially transmit in-fection, according to Arzt, who works in ARS’s For-eign Animal Disease Re-search Unit at the Plum Is-

land Animal Disease Cen-ter in Orient Point, New York. Prior to this research, it was believed that trans-mission of FMD did not occur during the pre-clini-cal phase — before visible signs of sickness.

This research is criti-cal for infectious disease experts, who use such in-formation to provide the right data and guide the resources to protect live-stock against foreign an-imal diseases if there is an outbreak. A variety of disease-dynamics mod-els have been developed in recent years to identify critical targets for control efforts, predict impacts and estimate resource require-ments for specific outbreak scenarios for FMD, Arzt said. However, none of these models included the

impact of preclinical trans-mission.

Working with scientists at the Center for Epidemi-ology and Animal Health in USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Arzt and his team used a mathematical modeling ap-proach to estimate the oc-currence of FMD preclin-ical transmission amongst pigs. They found that trans-mission occurred approxi-mately one day prior to de-velopment of visible signs of disease.

This updated disease data was then incorporated into a second model that

simulates disease spread. The results showed that simulation of FMD out-breaks in the U.S. pig pro-duction sector, including a preclinical infectious peri-od of one day, would result in a 40-percent increase in the number of farms af-fected. That’s 166 addi-tional farms and more than 664,000 pigs euthanized compared to the existing scenario of no preclinical transmission, Arzt added.

Failure to account for information like this could make the difference be-tween a limited, well-con-trolled FMD outbreak in

the United States with a cost of $3 million over two months as opposed to a catastrophic nationwide ep-idemic with a cost of $20 billion over one year, Arzt added.

The goal is to prevent FMD from invading the United States and to be prepared if it enters the country, Arzt said. Infec-tious disease modeling is a critical part of preparedness and protection of U.S. live-stock. This research pro-vides another tool—vital information—to help build better models to protect pigs, cattle, sheep and in-

Leopold Conservation Award program seeks Kansas nominees

Know a Kansas farm-er, rancher or forester who goes above and beyond in the care and management of natural resources? Nomi-nate them for the 2019 Kan-sas Leopold Conservation Award®.

Sand County Foundation, the nation’s leading voice for conservation of private land, presents the Leopold Conservation Award to pri-vate landowners in 14 states for extraordinary achieve-ment in voluntary conser-vation.

In Kansas, the $10,000 award is presented annually by Sand County Founda-tion, Kansas Association of Conservation Districts, and the Ranchland Trust of Kan-sas.

Given in honor of re-nowned conservationist Aldo Leopold, the award recognizes those who in-spire others with their ded-ication to land, water and wildlife habitat manage-ment on private, working land.

In his influential 1949 book A Sand County Alma-nac, Leopold called for an ethical relationship between people and the land they own and manage.

“The Leopold Conser-vation Award Program pro-vides a valuable opportunity to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of Kan-sas agricultural landowners who are committed to strong conservation practices and effective stewardship,” said Dan Meyerhoff, executive director of the Kansas As-sociation of Conservation Districts.

“RTK is a proud support-er of the Leopold Conserva-tion Award in Kansas. It is an honor to help recognize those conservationists who go above and beyond in the stewardship of our natural resources,” said Cade Ren-sink, chair of the board of Ranchland Trust of Kansas.

All applications must be or postmarked by June 1, 2019, and mailed to KACD c/o Dan Meyerhoff, 414 Au-tumn Lane, Hays KS 67601. Nominations may be sub-mitted on behalf of a land-owner, or landowners may nominate themselves.

The application can be found at: https://sandcoun-tyfoundation.org/uploads/KANSAS-CFN-19.pdf

The award will be pre-sented in November at the KACD Annual Convention in Wichita.

The Leopold Conserva-tion Award Program in Kan-sas is made possible thanks to the generous support of Kansas Association of Con-servation Districts, Ranch-land Trust of Kansas, Sand County Foundation, Ducks Unlimited, ITC Great Plains, Westar Energy, The Farm Credit Associations of Kansas, The Nature Con-servancy in Kansas, Clean Line Energy Partners, Kan-sas Forest Service, Kansas Department of Agriculture’s Division of Conservation, Kansas Department of Wild-life, Parks and Tourism, Mc-Donald’s, and USDA Natu-ral Resources Conservation Service.

Extension agent, livestock and natural resourcesSo the participants of

our Beef Issues Group sug-gested we have a session on confined beef cows and limit feeding. I made some contacts and was fortu-

nate to get in touch with Jason Eickman and Rodney Parsons. They graciously agreed to let us come out and take some pictures and

videos of their hoop barns. Will Boyer was going to bring his drone, and this was shaping up to be some-thing really cool.

Did I say cool? Mother Nature did not play nice with us, and our scheduled days kept getting post-poned, put off, and resched-uled. I got to the point, that it had to be done in order to have something to show at the meeting. The days of filming were cold, in the 20s , but the wind chills I don’t even want to know!

Both of these operations have cow/calves in hoop barns, different companies, different designs, different sizes. It was really quite interesting.

I’m always curious about animal behavior. Of course, both claim their animals are more doc-ile. This makes sense, be-cause of the daily inter-

actions with humans and close-up. The animals had plenty of room; they were doing quite well. They have to walk maybe 50 feet to feed and water, no mud, with nice bedding to lay down in. They did note that the calves will “rob” other mothers, so they might “jug” up the pair to get them to bond for a few days.

The cattle in the barns were sorted by age and body condition score. Age is important in limit feed-ing cows because of the younger cows typically are less aggressive than the older cows. When you sort by body condition score, it enables you to offer differ-ent diets based on the goal of increasing, decreasing or maintaining body condition score.

Limit feeding makes bunk management eas-ier, because all feed is consumed daily, elimi-nating the need to clean out bunks. Another ben-

efit is that with less feed consumed and greater feed efficiency, cows produce less manure, which reduces feed and manure handling costs. Lower feed intake also means cows produce less heat, which helps min-imize heat stress.

Some disadvantages are weather fluctuations, machine malfunctions and thin cows. Limit fed cows produce less heat, so con-sider increasing feed by 10% during the winter to provide enough feed. Of course, if you have a feed-ing equipment breakdown, you need to have a plan B to have feed delivered in a timely manner.

Hoop barns may be a way to retain cows when pasture is depleted, in-crease feed efficiency and reduce production costs. It still takes considerable land resources to raise the feeds and provide the bedding.

With winters like the current one, the hoop barns seem very attractive!

U.S. cattle numbers show slight increasePooches hungry for bison? New website lists honestly labeled dog food brands

U.S. sales of ag tractors and combines remained in the plus column for February, according to the latest sales data from the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM).

Total U.S. February 2-wheel-drive tractor sales grew 17.3 percent compared to February 2018, led by under-40-HP machines with a 24.6-percent gain and a 7.1-percent gain for 40-100-HP 2-wheel-drive tractors, while 100-plus-HP 2-wheel-drive-tractors recorded a drop of 2.2 percent.

February U.S. sales of 4-wheel-drive tractors gained 29.5 percent compared to last year and U.S. self-propelled combine sales for February grew 21.5 percent.

Canada did not fare as well, with February gains only for self-propelled combines (up 25 percent) and for under-40-HP 2-wheel-drive tractors (up 23 percent).

“We’re encouraged to hear USDA estimates that net farm income is expected to increase slightly in 2019 after last year’s declines; hopefully that signifies some optimism in the U.S. as the year moves forward. And we remain con-cerned about some of the Canadian numbers in February’s report,” said Curt Blades, AEM senior vice president, AG services.

“We hope that the new U.S. farm bill will provide more certainty for farmers as they plan ahead. However, we are still facing a lack of real, sustained progress on trade agree-ments and ending retaliatory tariffs.”

The full reports can be found in the Market Data sec-tion of the AEM website under Ag Tractor and Combine Reports: https://www.aem.org/market-data/.

AEM is the North American-based international trade group representing off-road equipment manufacturers and suppliers, with more than 1,000 companies and more than 200 product lines in the agriculture and construction-relat-ed industry sectors worldwide. The equipment manufac-turing industry supports 1.3 million jobs in the U.S., and 149,000 more in Canada. Equipment manufacturers also contribute $188 billion combined to the U.S. and Canadian economies. AEM is celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2019.

February U.S. ag equipment sales remain positive overall, says AEM report

The National Bison Association has launched a new website to help pet owners to select brands made with authentic North American bison, and to avoid deceptively labeled products made with water buffalo labeled only as “buffalo.”

“As more people discover the great taste and nutritional benefits of bison, they are bringing it to the table for all members of their family, including their companion an-imals,” said Dave Carter, executive director of the National Bison Association. “Our new site, entitled Sniffing Out the Best Bison Brands for Your Companion Animal, will help pet parents find products in the marketplace containing authentic North American Bison.”

The National Bison Association developed the new website after some companies have refused to fully label or disclose that the “buffalo” in their brands is actually im-ported water buffalo.

“Several pet food brands have worked with ranchers in recent years to develop products containing authentic North American bison. Many of those products list the ingredient as either bison or buffalo. Unfortunately, other brands are deceiving their customers by simply labeling their products as “buffalo” when in fact, they are using water buffalo, not North American bison. We want to help consumers make an informed choice.”

The National Bison Association is working with pet food regulators to propose new rules that would require an ingredient currently labeled as buffalo to by fully labeled as either American buffalo or water buffalo. Finalizing any regulatory change, however, is a long-term process.

“We want the public to be able to buy honestly labeled products with full confidence that they are providing their companion animals with the best bison products available,” Carter said.

The recently renovated Kansas State University Animal Sciences and In-dustry (ASI) Department Weber Hall Lounge was named the Jack Riley Stu-dent Center on Friday, February 22. The updat-ed area below the famous Weber Arena was renamed in honor of Dr. Jack Riley who served as ASI depart-ment head for 17 years.

“Dr. Riley was one of the kindest, caring leaders I’ve ever met,” says Dr. Dave Nichols, K-State ASI teaching coordinator and professor. “He believed in students and working as a team to advance our animal science program.”

Dr. Riley was known as an incredible teacher, but more importantly a great friend and advisor to KSU ASI students. He joined the K-State ASI faculty in 1971. During his time at K-State he taught more than 7,000 students in his 35 years of teaching. He served as the Beef Research Unit faculty coordinator for 16 years, and was depart-ment head from 1987 to 2004.

“He was truly a wonder-ful man and a wonderful administrator,” Curtis Kast-ner, ASI professor emeritus, says. “What Dr. Riley did as department head has car-ried on through the years and has set the stage for

keeping students as the pri-mary focus.”

During his 17-year ten-ure as department head, courses were revised to provide greater “hands-on” experiences, curriculum modifications and innova-tions were implemented, and undergraduate enroll-ment more than doubled. He retired from the depart-ment in January 2010.

“You can measure one’s legacy and the success of a department head by not only the enrollment in-crease but also by the staff hired,” Nichols says. It was Riley’s inspiring leadership and story that sparked the idea of the new Jack Riley Student Center.

After his passing in De-cember 2017, the ASI de-partment was eager to honor

Dr. Riley’s legacy and dedi-cation to K-State. When the Rogler family provided the funding for the renovation of Weber Hall Lounge, it was the prime opportunity to honor Dr. Riley.

Thanks to the teamwork of Sabrina Ault, ASI busi-ness manager, and John Wolfe, meat lab manag-er, the new paint, carpet and seating has provided an improved look and feel to the student center. Yet, more progressive change comes in the form of new technology and features for students to use and collabo-rate with. White boards for studying, access to meet-ing rooms and screens for student presentations are just a few examples of the updates found in the new student center.

“When I came into the lounge for the first time and saw the renovations, I was excited that the stu-dent area of Weber had seen a makeover,” says Taylor Belle Matheny, K-State ASI senior. “It is because of people like the Jack Riley family that K-State contin-ues to get improvements that are going to help cur-rent students and those who will follow in the coming years.”

The dedication and re-naming of the Weber Hall Lounge is a well-earned tribute to Dr. Riley’s com-mitment to K-State. The Jack Riley Student Center will serve as a reminder of the contributions Dr. Riley made to the department, and its students, for years to come.

The recently renovated Weber Hall Lounge was renamed the Jack Riley Student Center. This area now serves as a reminder of the contributions Dr. Riley made to K-State ASI students. Pictured during the dedication ceremony are Dr. Riley’s wife, Jan; their sons Brian and Steve; Steve’s wife, Kelly, and son, Cooper.
