* A Military Family Identification Card (MFID) is available to immediate military family members of Regular and Reserve Force members. Family members include: spouse/com-mon-law partners and children who are 13 years of age and older. To obtain this card, the CF member must be present. This card will give you access to Base facilities and will entitle you to benefits from the Military Discount Program.

Getting to know Victoria

GEOGraphY and CLIMaTE

VictoriaislocatedonthesoutherntipofVancouverIsland.InordertogettoVictoriabycar,youwillneedtotakeaferryfromVancouver(Tsaw-wassen Ferry Terminal). The trip is approximately 1 hour and 35min-utes. TheuniquelocationofVictoriagivestheareaatemperateclimatewithwarmsummers(theaveragetemperatureis22Celsius)andwithmorehoursofsunshinethanotherregionsonthemainlandoftheprovince.

 AwarmcoatandumbrellaaresufficientforwintersintheVictoriare-gionsincetheyareusuallythemildestinCanadawithanaverageJanuarytemperatureof6Celsius. Whenitdoessnow,itoftendoesnotstaylong.Theareaisahavenformotorcyclists,cyclistsandgolfers.However,ifyoudoprefertraditionalwinteractivitiessuchasskiing,youcanvisitMountWashington,whichisa3hourdrivenorthofVictoria.Thisskiresortislocatednearthe19WingComoxCanadianAirForceBase.

WhiletheprimarylanguageinVictoriaisEnglish,youwillhearavarietyoflanguagesspokenthroughthearea.FrenchcanbeheardinsomepartsofthedowntownareasclosetogovernmentofficesandaroundCFBEsqui-malt.IfyourprimarylanguageisFrench,thereisaFrenchlanguageschoolsystem,aFrancophonesocietyandfreesecondlanguagetrainingavailablethroughtheMFRC.VictoriahasoneofthehighestlevelsofregistrationsinFrenchimmersionprogramsinCanada.

Esquimalt Thiscommunityissituatedon72acresthatofferamixofcommercial,

residential and industrial development.  This community contains sce-nicparkland,waterfrontwalkways,beaches,andagolfcourse.Thisareaof townhosts the largestportionofCFBEsquimaltandis thehomeofCanada’sPacificNavalFleet.Here,youwillbeabletofindtheDockyard,Naden,WorkPointandtheBaseLanguageTrainingSchoolaswellasoneofthetwoMFRCoffices.

TheDockyardisthelargestpartoftheBaseandislocatedattheendofEsquimaltRoadabout7kmfromdowntownVictoria.InthispartoftheBase,youwillfindalltheMesses,alltheSingleQuartersforChiefsandPettyOfficers’(sergeantsandabove)andaportionofSingleQuartersforCommissionedMembersintheWardroom. 

YoucanalsofindsomeResidentialHousingUnits(formerlyknownasPMQs)andoneoftheMFRClocationsneartheDockyardentrance.

Thesecond largestpartof theBase is inNaden,which is locatedap-proximately2kmfromtheDockyard.Here,youwillfindtheCANEX,theSISIPoffice,abarbershop,atravelagentandtheCFHAoffice.ThisareaalsohasPSPrecreationalfacilities,whichincludesagymandanicerink.
