Appendix 3: Coins from Excavations inside Jaffa Gate of Old City Jerusalem

One hundred and two coins were found in the excavations, 33 unidentifiable. The coins were cleaned in the laboratories of the IAA, by Lena Kuperschmidt, and were photographed by Clara Amit of the IAA photography studio.

Of the pre-Byzantine period coins the stratigraphical context of only two coins deserve mention: The only first Jewish revolt coins (Nos. 6-7) were found in the same basket on the bedrock near the ‘upper aqueduct’. Related to the Byzantine phase of the aqueduct are two poorly preserved 4th-5th century CE coins (Nos. 16-17), also from the same basket. The continued use of the Byzan-tine Decumanus into the Ayyubid period is also supported by the excavation on the Decumanus of two fulūs – of Maḥmūd b. Zangī (1146-1174 CE; No. 28) and Al-Nasir I Yusuf Salaḥ al-Dīn (1174 CE; No. 32).
