Projects, Projects, Projects! – This month has been action-packed, to say the least. We’ve had so many awesome things happening in our classes.

Freshmen in Geo/Lit prepared for their final presentations this week by presenting to and getting feedback from some of our NewTech@Mann seniors. They then presented for the first time to a panel in our formal presentation room. The students were tasked with using the text structures and geographical information they learned to create a brochure about Greenville for any potential visitors.

Geometry and Engineering students launched into their project ecently by going to Gravitopia to gather

some measurements and inspiration for their next big endeavor. For this project, students were tasked with

designing and creating a 3-D model of an obstacle course and one stunt that must use geometry and design

principles from engineering.

BI-WEEKLY E-NEWSLETTER ISSUE 4 - Page 11 OCTOBER 13, 2017

Geometry and Engineering began a project by trying out their puzzle cubes that they designed and created

for a local special needs camp. In this project, students took their knowledge of geometry and engineering

to create a working sketch of their designs in Autodesk Inventor. They then created a prototype of their

puzzle using wood blocks.

Students in Biology presented to a panel of guests recently in our formal presentation room. Students were

explaining their solution to help a fictional patient with cholera using their knowledge of cells.

Students in digital multimedia began presenting their plans for how to teach incoming freshmen how to

understand our NewTech@Mann schoolwide learning outcomes (SWLOs). Students could choose from a

variety of media options for their final products from creating videos, websites, and more.

Guest Speaker for Earth Science – Beth Brotherton, former newscaster for WYFF, visited and spoke with

US History and American Lit students regarding her experiences as a reporter and how the media can

perpetuate hysteria. Students are exploring how hysteria affects society and are looking at hysteria through

the history of the Salem Witch Trials, Colonial America, and the American Revolution.

Physics Field Trip – Students in Mrs. Hanor’s physics classes visited Clemson’s International Center for

Automotive Research (ICAR). There students met with automotive engineers and graduate students who

showcased how physics is being used to turn a Honda Civic into a racecar. Professional racecar driver,

Katherine Legge, was also there to talk with students.

Senior Project Presentations – Students in Mr. Hurst’s senior project course presented to administration

a persuasive proposal identifying the benefits to having year-long school. This endeavor has required

students to thoroughly research the pros and cons, as well as contacting representatives and

administration at schools with a year-long schedule across the country. Students have worked very hard

to collect and interpret data regarding the potential academic benefits.
