ANCESTRAL LINEAGE OF PAUL MCNUETY AS GLEANEDFROM EARLY TO MID-lg.N CENTURY RECORDS13O

INTRODUCTIONMy own previous research has demonstrated the utility of classical genealogical
teiirniques in tracing ancestors in Ireland. These techniques included the
evaluation of: birth, marriage and death records; the 1901 and l91l census;
family records; and wills, deeds and memorial inscriptions. The focus of this
study is to complete the identification of 5'h generation ancestors (great $eatgrandparents ie gg gparents) and to commence the identification of 6'n
gere.ution ancestors (great great great grandparents ie ggg gparents). Both my
faternal (McNulty) and maternal (McHugh) ancestral lines are investigated each
of *hi.h ir explored within the context of the ancestral homes of the McNultys,
Boylans, McHughs and Fallons. A wide variety of sources will be used
including Griffith's Valuation, Valuation Office records, death records, the
1851 Dublin City Census, the William Smith O'Brien Petition, Irish Wills
Index, pre-1850 church records, the 1831 Derry census and Tithe Applotment
records. The essay will focus on new findings which will be integrated with
previous knowledge where contextually appropriate. It was found_ more
iffective to present the findings within the context of four ancestral homes
rather than under source headings.

This information enabled an estimation of their dates df birth as 1780 and 1781
respectively (Appendix l, p l2). Strangely, their deaths have not been registered
with the General Records office (GRO), Lombard Street, Dublin 2 at least not
in the period 1870 through 1879. The veracity ofthe dates of death has been
confirmed by o'Kane132. However, an independent -verification.of the
memorial injcription would be desireable in the light of their unanticipated
longevity. Examination of the valuation office "cancelled Lists" in the Public
n.JorO." Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) may help to confirm Robert
McNulty's age at death.
My great great grandfather, Robert McNulty, was.a medium sized tenant farmer
t#itt f S u"...9 i"O also a landlord with three small rented holdings according to
Griffrth,s valuation (Appendix 2, p 13). Tithe Applotment returns of 1834
were disappointing in ttrit ttrey reaorded landloids but not tenants. The eight
landlords recorded were not readily linked to their tenants ($ppendix 3, p 1 )'However, the tenants werc recorded in an 1831 Census133 fragment for Co
Derry which identified Robert McAnulty as the owner or occupier of house 24
whiih aecommodated one Roman Catholic family of 4 males and I females in
the townland of Knockbrack, parish of Glendermot (now clondermot) (Figure
2, p 5). House 23 was occupied by Hugh McAnulty and Dominick Amurry as
joint owners or occupiers and accommodated two families with a total'o.rrpun.y of 3 males and 3 females. Neither Hugh McAnulty nor Dominick
A;r"y are listed in Griffith's Valuation and presumably had passed away by
that time, c 1858.

Thus, it is possible that Hugh McAnulty was the father of Robert McAnurty andw_ould therefore be my great great great grandfather. coincides reasonably well with the years, 1817 and 1821, estimated respectively
from his death certificate (1874,57 years) and from Glasnevin cemetry records

It is noteworthy that the valuation offlrce "cancelled Lists" may be less reliable
in Dublin city than elsewhere as John Boylan was cancelled for different
properties in ULtn 1874 (correct) and in 1890 long after he had passed away. His
iooii,.., Margaret Boyian, was cancelled in the period 1916'1924 when she
would have b-een weliover 100 years old (unlikely circumstance) given.that her
son wErs born sometime in the tgtl-l,tzz period. It is also noteworthy that John
eoyt*', son, Stephen, passed away in 1908 but his name was not cancelled as
the lessor of I Hawthom Terrace, church Road, Dublin 3 until 1916 when he
was replaced by Isabel Boylan, a relation? who is new to me'

An Extract from the 1831 census for the Townland of Knockbrack, parish ofGlende, not (now Clondemot), Co Derry Recording rny Great GreatGrandfather, Robert McAnulty, in House 24
The ancestral Boylans (from left) James Boylan (great great grandfather?),
Margaret (nee Kavanagh) Boylan (great grandmother) and John Boylan (great
gran-atattrerl who became a law clerk and ultimately a gentrified property
developer.
Isabel Boylan was cancelled in 1940 as the lessor of 4-7 Hawthom Terrace and
replaced by Teresa Boylan. Isabel was also cancelled in 1965 as the lessor of 1
Hawthorn Terrace and replaced by Samuela? Green. Unfortunately, current
details on lessors and occupiers of 6-8 Hawthorn Terrace, where Teresa Boylan
was the last known lessor, are no longer available following the cancellation ofrates in 1977 .t42 The ancestral home of the Boylans at 31 Hawthorn Terrace no
longer appears to have a Boylan connection. Scrutiny of properly deeds and
Thom's Directory may yield further information.

Griffith's Valuation (printed in 1854) shows that John and Margaret Boylan
were heads of household in Church Road, Dublin 3 in the parish of St Thomas
(Appendix 2, p 13). Margaret Boylan would have been John Boylan's mother
,utt", ttu, his'wife as he-did not marry Margaret Kavanagh until c 1861. His

He later emigrated to Australia to join the GoldRush152 which commenced in 1851. Meariwhile, James Fallon married andfathered one son, John Fallon II (Figure l, p 2), before emigrating to the USA.Mary cullinane moved to a 42 acre farm at Deerpark Lodge, Monard which sheeventually bequeathed to her grandson, John Fallon II who assumed the tenancvin 1871.
Griffith's valuation for the townland of Monard (116 acres leased by ArthurHenry) shows 5 tenants including Martin Fallon (42 acres) who also leased landin the townlands of Ballynasheeoge (40 acres from the Rev Thomas Kelly) andLackaghmore (60 acres fiom James D Meldon). It appears that he may haveacted on behalf of his mother, Mary (nee cullinane) Fallon Shaughnesiy u,holater assumed the tenancy of Deerpark farm, Monard under the name,- MaryFallon. After she had passed av'ay, the tenancy passed to her grandson, JohnFallon II, in 1871 according to the valuation office "cancelled Lists". Hepassed it onto his eldest son, Michael, in 1934, who passed it on to his secondwife, Winifred Grealish, in 1967, She passed it on to her son, Thornas Fallon, the present incumbent with his wife, Mary Walsh, in 1973.

Further genealogical information concerning the falofrs of Monard may beavailable through church and graveyard records. For example, my ggg gfather,John Fallon I, is buriedls3 in the Cullinane family grave in The Friary,Claregalway. His younger brother, Bishop Patrick Fallon (1805-1879) has beenresearched by Rev Martin Coenlsa and others. Emigrant records for Australia(Mr Shaughnessy c 1851) and the USA (James Fallon c 1846) may shed furtherlight on the ancestral history of the Fallons of Monard.
My great grandfather, John Fallon II, married Anne O'Brien in 1868, thedaughter of Charles O'Brien of Ballinderry and Mary Fahy of Bamaderg, CoGalway. Charles O'Brien was the first teacher in Corofin, Co Galway in theearly 1830s. His eldest son Michael was noted for "burying the dead during thefamine when people fled from the dead bodies"rss. There is no record of anyO'Brien in Ballinderry Demense nor in Ballinderry Estate in the parish ofCummer in the Tithe Applotment survey of 183 1 . However, Charles O'Brien isrecorded in Griffith's Valuation in the nearby townland of Brockagh (Appendix2, p 13) as a tenant of John P Nolan who owned 6886 acres156. Also resident inBrockagh in 1856 (Valuation Office "Cancelled Lists") were Margaret, Patrickand Mary Fahy who may have been related to his wife, Mary Fahy fromBarnaderg, Co Galway. No Fahys were recorded in the Tithe Applotmentsurvey nor in Griffrth's Valuation in Barnaderg North and South in the parish ofKillererin, Co Galway.
Charles O'Brien passed away c 1876 (Appendix 1, p 13) and bequeathed thefamily farm to his eldest son, Michael. The Tithe Applotment survey alsoreports a Michael O'Brien in Ballinacreggatt'?, Cummer who might be thefather of Charles O'Brien (Table 4, p 9) thus following the well establishedgrandfather to grandson naming patternrs8. Ballinacregga may be BallynacregSouth in Cummer or Ballynacregga in Cargin, Galway. No O'Brien was foundin either parish in Griffith's Valuation. Manuscript recordstt' for the son of the

SUMMARYI6I: Further progress has.been made in tracing the ancestors ofPaul McNulty using early to mid-l9d century records iniluding Griffith,sValuation, Valuation Office records, death records, pre-1850 church records, the1831 Derry Census and Tithe Applotment records (Figure l, p 2). Both mypatemal (McNulff) and maternal (McHugh) ancestral lines were investigatedeach of which was explored within the context of the ancestral homes of theMcNulfys, Boylans, McHughs and Fallons. Two great great great grandparentswere identified, namely, John Fallon I (1799?-1827) and his wife, Mary (neeCullinane) Fallon Shaughnessy (c 1799-1867?). potential new great great greatgrandfathers were identified including 6.Cortney W"?, Hugh? McNutfy andMichael? O'Brien. Other new ancestors identified included my great greatgrandparents, James? and Margaret Boylan, James and Catherine (neeCulkeen) Fallon, and James? and Margaret? Kavanagh. More work needs tobe done to complete this study including a more detailed examination of church, emigrant, estate and valuation records.
