welcome 1 An icy north face, a tough traverse, steep slopes and rough routes. Many mountaineers, climbers, mountain bikers and outdoor athletes dream of such challenges – and some go out and meet them. No matter on which terrain, the route is definitely not an easy one – but that is why it is so tempting and so rewarding in the end. For over a century, we have equipped athletes and outdoor lovers with products that they can absolutely rely on, products that allow them to focus on their ambitions and to enjoy the beauty of nature. Our top priorities have always been function, quality and longevity – without any compromises. After all, we know that your performance and even your life can de- pend on our equipment. We are never standing still, we are always looking for new, innovative solutions. Our Guide is a true classic for ambitious alpinists, but we have further refined its carrying comfort and load trans- fer. A big pack with a long tradition is the Aircontact Pro, which we have equipped with a host of smart de- tails and a sleek look for the trek into the future. Yet, we do not only focus on our products (and their wearers) – we also take a close look on our environ- ment. Around the world we enjoy the most breathta- king gifts of nature. We need to push protection and we need to reduce the negative environmental impact of our actions. It’s probably the alpine spirit within us that makes us pick a special route – and, of course, this is not the easiest one. We have, for example, decided not to use material made of recycled PET bottles. We trust in experts who believe a closed loop of bottle-to-bottle production to be ecologically more worthwhile. We know that this is a long journey! Yet, there are many rewarding achievements on the way. It was an impor- tant step for us to join the Fair Wear Foundation (FWF) last year. Aircomfort System Aircontact System Alpine Back System

DEuTERBAcK sYsTEMs

On small to medium backpacks we go for maximum ventilation. Getting a sweaty back whilst hiking really belongs to the past. The Aircomfort System’s special airy mesh ensures that moist air can escape

from three directions, preventing heat build up. For comfort, there are soft ventilation pads between the shoulder blades and on the hips as well as ergonomically shaped hip fins. In larger volume models, the Aircomfort Pro System combines clever mesh back ventilation with superb load transfer. A flexible, lightweight round spring steel frame forms the foundation for the pivoting Vari Flex hip fins. They follow the wearer’s movement and provide a super comfortable fit. The Aircomfort Vario Pro System completes this high tech carrying system with its stepless, quick and easy Vari Fit back adjustment system. Aircomfort FlexLite’s combination of complimentary round and flat frame profiles of spring steel guar-antees fantastic carrying comfort. All Aircomfort systems share one thing: They reduce perspiration for sports men and women thereby reducing the strain on their circulation and giving them greater stamina. According to findings from the acclaimed Ho-henstein Institute, scientific evidence suggests that optimal back ventilation reduces moisture loss by up to 25 %.

Good backpack ventilation reduces perspira-tion which helps to lower the skin tempera-ture. This reduces the average pulse rate and reduces blood pressure. So reducing perspira-tion increases performance – and who wants to do without that! Deuter has developed spe-cial systems for the various sport categories, which perfectly match to the particular de-mands. They are all based on effective venti-lation for a more comfortable back even with high physical exertion. In larger volume mod-els pivoting Vari Flex hip fins moreover provide flexible, energy saving comfort. The easiest way to carry heavy loads is

to combine the backpack and your body together into one unit. This is exactly what the Aircontact principle of our trek-

king backpacks is about: a body contact system with perfect stability, exact load dispersion and effective ventilation. With every movement, a pump effect circu-lates air through the special breathable hollow cham-ber foam Aircontact cushions. The air channels be-tween these cushions increases ventilation effect. The Aircontact and Aircontact Pro with pivoting Vari Flex hip fins also provide flexible, energy saving comfort, which is especially important where heavy loads are concerned. The result: up to 15 % less sweating as with a stand-ard trekking backpack. Proved in Tests conducted by Gabriel L.&T.

For alpine backpacks the combination of comfort, durability, functionality at high weight efficiency is important. Especially in rugged terrain a back-

pack, which is too heavy and complicated is more vul-nerable to failure, and is a hazard. The Deuter Alpine Back System with the two softstripe-back pads mould themselves anatomically to the back. The back system offers lightweight flexibility to comfortably follow your body movements. Between the 3D-AirMesh covered soft back stripes an air channel ventilates the back. The result: compact load transfer and secure carrying performance with comfortable ventilation.

Airstripes System Shield System

4

6

The main purpose of our Shield System is to minimise, or even, to a large extent,

prevent, injury occurring during risk sports. Tested by the TÜV Product Service in accordance with the in-dustry guidelines for personal safety equipment, the system carries both TÜV-GS and CE certification. The sophisticated Multi Layer Construction consists of vis-cose-elastic SC-1 foam and a closed-cell foam delivers excellent shock absorption and provides the basis for the protective function. Soft foam in the outer layers provides good carry comfort and ventilation during sweaty activitities. The typical V-shape of the construc-tion covers the sensitive areas of the back, whilst re-taining the pack’s outstanding freedom of movement. The Shield System is incorporated into the Razor, Edge, Venom and Attack models. The result: the TÜV-GS tested back system combines a comfortable carry, outstanding ventilation in the free spaces between the padding and maximum safety in the event of a fall.

In every biking situation a bike pack must sit securely on your back. Our unique Airstripes System takes care of that and offers effective ventilation. It consists

of two contoured foam profiles which have many air channels, covered with a highly breathable mesh. While riding, a "chimney effect" is generated between the foam profiles that enhances the ventilation. The bil-aminate construction with harder and softer foam lay-ers guarantees flexibility and more comfortable load distribution. The result: the minimal contact surface area of the pro-filed Airstripes allows free air circulation over 80 % of the riders back.

...and adjusting.

Bike Protection

Loosen all straps and put on your backpack.

The shoulder strap anchor pointshould ideally be positioned between the shoul- der blades. Set backpacks with adjust-able back-length to the correct height (Vari Quick and Vari Fit System). For small volume Deuter packs choose the right back length (Standard, SL, or EL).

Place the hip belt centrally on your hip bone, fasten and tighten.

For big backpacks, adjust sta-biliser and load adjustor straps:tighten > increased stability loosen > increased ventilationVary the load transfer from time to time between waist and shoulder.

Now tighten the shoulder straps, so that the main weight rests on the hip belt.

Finally, fasten the chest strap to opti- mise the shoulder strap positioning.

Packing...The pack’s center of gravity should sit close to the body and ideally at shoulder height. This way it is positioned over the body’s center of gravity and the pack won’t pull backwards. Therefore, put heavy equipment such as tent, food, big jackets close to the back in about shoulder height. Place sleeping bag, down equipment and other light objects in the bottom compartment; and midweight gear such as clothing on the top towards the outside. For easy grab, get small, often-used items in the lid pocket. Minimise the number of items you strap to the pack’s outside and evenly distribute the weight, in particular on the side pockets.

In easy terrain (hiking routes, flat trails) the load’s cent-er of gravity should sit higher, in difficult passages (al-pine routes, Via Ferrata) a bit lower and thus closer to the body’s center of gravity. This packing system leads to a more forward leaning position, yet it provides more balance.

Tall people can enjoy a perfect fit with our Extra Long EL-models! Sports peo-ple who are between 1.85 m and 2.00 m tall often have difficulty finding back-packs that fit their longer backs. Our favourite Deuter backpack models are available to suit taller people with ex-tended back lengths by 6-9 cm. Overall, backpacks in the Extra Long (EL) series have also grown in terms of volume. Back systems, features and details re-main the same in the EL models as they are in the standard models, however.

»Extra Long« The extra long cut of the Futura Pro backpack is the one for full-grown hikers. The carrying system combines three very strong pros in one: top Aircomfort ventilation, flexible carry comfort and a comfortable hip belt that moulds itself to your shape.Go to page: 15

Without a doubt, this is the bikers’ favourite backpack. Originally designed for the Trans Alpine mountain bike race, it will happily go on any kind of adventure! At the end of the day, it will sit steady as a rock whatever you undertake, thanks to its Airstripes back, mesh wings and anatomically shaped shoulder straps. Plus: it offers many practical storage solutions such as the zippered map pocket in the back part, or the separated main compartment. Our rucksacks are designed to fit the average athletic build. However, since not everyone fits the norm it is likely that women's models will fit many male users perfectly well, and vice ver-sa. With larger capacity packs in particular, a perfect fit is crucial and for this reason the Va-ri-Quick shoulder straps on the regular Deu-ter rucksacks and children's packs can be easily swapped for SL straps in the event that the ori-ginal straps are unsuitable. Conversely, the SL straps on our SL rucksacks can be exchanged for normal Vari-Quick shoulder straps that are sui-table for the user with a more powerful build. For further information, see page 138.

Shorter back On the whole, women have shorter backs than men. The SL carry systems are therefore a little shorter than Deuter’s standard backpacks. Consequently, they are also highly suitable for people with shorter backs, regardless of gender.

Narrower shoulder strapssmaller buckles and very narrow strap extensions prevent the SL shoulder straps from chafing or putting unwanted pressure on the chest area. Since women normally have nar- rower shoulders, the shoulder straps are positioned closer together, which prevents strap slippage.

Conical shaped hip belt To fit women’s hips comfortably, the hip belt should form a conical shape when closed. This conical shape is achieved by the upwards diagonal of the belts’ attachment area to the pack and by the curved shape of the SL hip fins.

Our products are made for the outdoors – for the mountains and the trails. Nature is our inspiration and our home. And we feel the responsibility to preserve it for generations to come. One main focus is the longevity of our products. In the end, this is the most environmentally friendly step you can take: producing things that last.

In the past years, we have also worked hard on making the entire product cycle – from the first sketch to the delivery – as eco-friendly and resource-efficient as possible. Yet, we are very much aware of the fact that this is a long way that involves many small steps. But we believe that it is worth it – it’s the right way into the future. There are many difficult passages along the way, since we haven’t picked the easiest route: we do not want to compromise when it comes to func-tion, quality and longevity, not only because the safety of the user can depend on the gear. Thus, the functional criteria de-cide our choice of material – and of course, this strongly limits the potential range.

Our backpacks and accessories are produced in Vietnam by our partner Duke. The company is certified to the environ-mental management standard ISO 14001. We are particularly proud of the fact that Duke was the first Asian backpack pro-ducer to become bluesign® system partner in February 2011.

Our sleeping bag manufacturer in China fulfilled its bluesign® standard screening in April 2012. Thus, all of our production partners are working according to the bluesign® standard. We now support them in convincing their suppliers to join us – another step in pushing eco awareness within the entire supply chain. There are many challenges lying ahead.

What is the bluesign® standard? The bluesign® Standard is the world’s strictest standard for environmental protection, safety at work and consumer pro-tection. Compared to other eco labels, the bluesign® Stand-ard does not only test the final product on substances that are potentially hazardous to the human health or the environ-ment – bluesign instead tests every single component of the product. The idea behind this concept is simple: certainty can only be delivered, when all stages – from raw material to fi-nal product – are assessed. After all, what you get out depends on what you put in.

The foundation is the bluesign® on-site screening, where the production facility is analysed by independent experts. The producer can only become bluesign® system partner by suc-cessfully implementing the bluesign® recommendations. The bluesign® Standard therefore ensures environmental and con-sumer protection directly on site, not at the end of the pro-duction in the test institutes. This further means that envi-ronmental and consumer safety is not only guaranteed for a single product, but for all products from this fabrication.

The bluesign® Standard has two different levels of labelling. “bluesign® approved fabric” means that 90% of the textile fabric must be bluesign® approved fabric. The remaining 10% must not have permanent direct skin contact. Additionally, they must meet the criteria and limits of the bluesign® re-stricted substance list.

The label “bluesign product” in-cludes all components: 95% of the textile fabric must be blue-sign® approved and at the mo-ment additionally, no less than 30% of all trimmings such as zip-pers, buttons, embroidery, have to be bluesign® approved. The remaining 5% must not have per-manent direct skin contact. They must as well meet the criteria and limits of the BSSL restricted sub-stance list.

This is a challenging journey for us… of course, it is less com-plex to produce a T-Shirt made of 100% cotton and a sim-ple print according to the bluesign® standard – compared to a backpack that is made out of 220 single pieces!

We believe it’s an obvious choice to take our next step with two products for kids: our Dreamland sleeping bag is a “bluesign® prod-uct”, while the new backpack Kikki is made out of “bluesign approved fabric”. We are eager to hear what you think about our steps into the future – and whether you would like to join us on our way.

With return levels at a constant low of 0,11%, the repairs team are not exactly overburdened. That is why these experienced professionals will also tackle rucksacks that are decades old. And there are many of them out – which is great! Because the production of a backpack pollutes our environment with 38 kg CO

The Aircomfort Pro system brings together three key elements which work to full advantage when your dream trip necessitates carrying a bit more gear: top Aircomfort ventilation, flexible carry comfort and a comforta- ble, snug hip belt. The key to this clever combination lies in its frame construction and the floating Vari Flex hip belt. Added to this are the specially tailored SL-shoulder straps and SL hip fins, advantages which will be especially appreciated by female Air-comfort fans.

1 Anatomic shaped shoulder straps with comfortable 3D-AirMesh allow for better control and positioning.

2 The round spring steel frame is very lightweight and flex-ible. It is extremely durable, provides stable tension for the back mesh and transfers the load to the hip belt. Its flexibil-ity guarantees great freedom of movement and a perfect fit.

3 Exact, quick height adjustment for differing back lengths with the stepless Vari Fit system.

4 Load transfer straps for exact, individual positioning of the pack.

5 The mesh back guarantees maximum ventilation since moist air can escape to all sides.

6 Flexible Vari Flex waist belt helps saving energy by follow-ing the wearer’s movement. The ergonomic, contoured waist belt made of bilaminate foam with PE reinforcement also transfers the weight to the hips. Soft, breathable Wide Air-Mesh lining for extra comfort.

The favourites for ambitious hikers who like to travel light yet do not compromise on carry comfort and du-rability! The Aircomfort FlexLite System was particularly de-veloped for the Spectro series: it features an extremely flexible twin-frame construction and effective 3-sided ventilation. Plus: the 30 l model weighs in at 1.2 kg only! Durable, light-weight and smart – these bright-coloured packs are the per-fect partner for 1-2 day tours.

1 Anatomically formed shoulder straps with perforated foam and large-celled 3D- AirMesh lining to make them airy.

2 Twin-frame construction gives the Aircomfort FlexLite System its special lightweight properties at the same time as guaranteeing excellent flexibility and ergonomic fit. The secret lies in the combination of complimentary round and flat spring steel frame profiles. It easily follows body movements and transfers the load perfectly to the hip fins. It also gives the back mesh a stable tensioned platform for the patented Deuter 3-sided ventilation system.

3 Load adjustor straps enable exact backpack positioning.

4 Anatomically shaped, sturdy hip fins transfer the load to the hips. Perforated foam and oversized cell Wide AirMesh lining provide additional ventilation.

The name says it all. Like our evergreen models Gröden and Zugspitze, which have been there from the very start, back in 1984, when Deuter revolutionised the backpack market with their subsequently much copied, fully ventilated Aircomfort system for hiking packs. Of course, over the last 25 years Deuter could not resist con-tinuous further development and perfection of their tried and tested original models.

1 Stabiliser straps allow optimal positioning of the back-pack.

2 Contoured shoulder straps with 3D-AirMesh lining.

3 Additional ventilation channel between the Aircontact cushions.

4 Two Aircontact pads in special breathable hollow-chamber foam distribute the load evenly. The Aircontact pads perform a pump effect, whereby every movement prompts the exchange of air, resulting in optimum back ventilation. The result: 15% less perspiration than with previous body-contour packs.

5 Anatomically formed hip fins for freedom of move-ment and body-hugging carrying.

6 Flexible, tensioned Delrin® U-shaped frame provides sta-bility with little extra weight. It follows the most varied movements with absolute ease. The frame combines with the body-hugging fit of the pack to create a comfortable yet compact carry system with even load distribution and effective load transfer.
