phonetic photograph— of educated spoken English as dis

Engl ish had become the ofiicial and li terary language of thewhole k ingdom ,

i t was natura l that the same dial ec t initsspoken form shoul d become the general speech of theeducated classes, and tha t as central iz a tion increased, i tshould preponderate more and more over the loca l d ialects .But the uni ty of spoken Engl ish is s til l imperfect : i t is sti l ll iabl e to be influenced by the loca l dialects— inLondon i tse lfby the Cockney d ia lect, inEd inburgh by the Loth ian Scotchdia lect

The comparative purity and correc tness of the differentvarieties of spoken Engl ish is popularly estimated by thedegree of approx imation to the w r itten language. But

these comparisons are general ly carried out in a onesided and partia l spi ri t. When anEngl ishman hears thed istinct r and glz in the Broad Scotchfar/Aer, mgrbl, etc . ,he is apt to assume at once that Scotch Engl ish is morearchaic than Southern English ; but if he look s at theevidence on the other side
