While in town recently to promote the Houston premiere of his critically acclaimedoff-Broadway play, The Night Hank Williams Died, playwright Larry King spoke

frankly with TWT correspondent Brent Shockley. The outspoken author of The Best Lit-tle Whorehouse in Texas touched a variety of topics, including the Broadway flop of theshow's sequel, The Best Little Whorehouse Goes Public; Tommy Tune; Burt Reynolds;and Houston consumer advocate and television icon Marvin Zindler.

TWT: Let's begin by talking a bit aboutyour Texas roots and how you became-awriter.Larry King: I was born down in Putnam,Texas near Abilene. I liked my mother'sstories so much that I began to want to tellthem and write them. I never had anotherambition. My mother got out of the Cisco,Texas library The Adventures of Tom Saw-yer. Mark Twain's tales gave me so muchthat I began to write stories and submit tomagazines when I was nine years old.TWT: I understand that you had a suc-cessful career on Capitol Hill in Wash-ington prior to becoming a writer.LK: I had a terrible time making a living asa small newspaperman in West Texas andNew Mexico. I loved politics, so I took ajobwith J.T. Rutherford, the Congressmanfrom Odessa, and then for Jim Wright, from Fort Worth. I was put on loan to Lyn-don Johnson a couple of times, becauseI had developed a reputation as a goodspeech writer. When Kennedy was assas-sinated, it brought to me how quick andfast life could be. If I intended to write, Ineeded to get with it. I quit and beganfreelancing.TWT: How well did you know theJohnsons?LK: Pretty well. Johnson was Senate Ma-jority Leader when I worked on the Hill. Iwas one of the advance men for the fateful

trip to Dallas. I was supposed to go on thetrip, but came down with strep throat anddidn't get to go.TWT: How did you make the transitionfrom Capitol Hill to writing?LK: I had gotten to know Willie Morris, ayoung editor for Harper's Magazine whoencouraged me to write while I was on theHill. Due to political considerations, I couldnot write while employed on the Hill. WhenI decided to quit in 1964, I called Willie thatday. My first assignment was to write apiece about being a "second banana poli-tician." Within weeks, I was publishing inThe Nation, The Progressive, The TexasObserver and Sports Illustrated. I never hadan apprenticeship. I never suffered throughthat starving writer business. At the time,I didn't know how lucky I was.TWT: Did you ever dream that you'd bepenning musicals?LK: I was always thinking of being a novel-ist and a journalist. I stumbled into theWhorehouse deal when I published an ar-ticle in Playboy about the closing of theChicken Ranch. Two years later, PeterMasterson saw the article and proposed tocomposerllyricist Carol Hall and me thatwe make it intoamusical.l didn't even likemusicals!TWT: Are you musically inclined?LK: No, but I thought it'd be fun to try. Ifanything, I could write a magazine articleabout producing a Broadway musical and

PAGE 12 TWT JULY 15 - JULY 21 1994

missing by a million light years. I have writ-ten about a dozen country music songs. There are three of them in The Night HankWilliams Died, which ran five months off-Broadway at the Orpheum.TWT: Did you consult Houston consumeradvocate Marvin Zindler when writing TheBest Little Whorehouse in Texas?LK: I tried to call Marvin prior to writing'the Playboy piece. He never returned myphone calls. Our lawyers said since he wasself-promoting and had two books writtenabout himself, he had no rights to privacy. We invited him to the opening in New York, gave him a limousine and made pictures ofhim posing with the leads. If the son of abitch ever wanted to sue, we had recordsthat he had accepted our gratuity. He hadgiven implied consent.

When we opened at the Tower in Hous-ton, Marvin was there running up and downthe aisles signing autographS. It was weird. It was obvious to everyone that he was thevillain of the play, but Marvin thought hewas a hero in the goddamn play.TWT: When conceptualizing Best LittleWhorehouse in Texas, were you ever con-cerned that the show would be offensiveto women?LK: No, not really. What I was concernedabout was that we had to make peoplecheer for what society thinks of as bad. Wehad to make them cheer for a woman whowas selling other women's bodies, forwomen selling their own bodies and-for asheriff who permitted it. For some reason, real hookers in New York took offense andwould write nasty stuff on the glass out-side the theatre.TWT: Had you ever been to the ChickenRanch?LK: No.1 got my education in that respectin West Texas at the Tex-Mex border. I hadnot been near Austin till well into mytwenties.TWT: What was your involvement with themovie version?LK: Pete Masterson and I wrote the firstscreenplay and we pretty much followedthe stage, play. Burt Reynolds was cast andI didn't like that because I didn't think hecould act. ... He had been the humber onebox office attraction for the past sevenyears, so Universal wanted to hire him. That movie was what started the real de-cline·of his career. Burt refused to play thesheriff as an old fart. The role had to beyoung and macho for him. When I tried topersuade him to stretch as an. actor, he

had me fired. He brought in his own writerand director. We didn't have any more todo with the show after that point.TWT: Was Dolly Parton involved at thetime?LK: She had been cast. I liked Dolly. Shewrote me a couple of letters while theywere shooting in Austin. She talked abouthow bad things were going .... She wishedshe had never got involved. I tried to get myname taken off the screenplay. and mylawyer-my wife-said no, that it wouldblow my residuals. She was right-to thetune of about $300,000!TWT: What's it like as a Texan doing bus-iness in New York?LK: I made it an asset. I got some criticismby Texans, but most of my work comes outof my Texas roots. The grand irony of it isthat I spent the first 25 years of my life try-ing to escape West Texas and the last 40writing about it! I learned early on that Ineeded to have a little shtick. I played thisprofessional Texan who could quote a lit-tle from Shakespeare.TWT: The Best Little Whorehouse GoesPublic was one of the biggest flops ever onBroadway. What happened?LK: I still don't much care for musicals. Idid it for the wrong reason. I do not like thecollaborative process of a musical. I onlydid it out of greed, which was a bad thingto do. Once I learned Tommy Tune was go-ing to ramrod things and do it only his way,I should have had the intelligence and in-tegrity to quit. But I hung in there andfought a losing battle.TWT: Do you feel the New York critics wereunusually harsh toward this production?LK: Yes, I do, but Tommy handed thema gun to shoot him with. Tommy has al-ways been very charming in public. He canbe mean as a snake backstage! He givesthem that soft, nice-guy stuff in public.Listen, he's tough as Hitler! I ain't sayingthat's wrong, but I saw a growing pub-lic arrogance. He let that go public by say-ing in ads and interviews, "I've never hada flop on Broadway and I don't intend tostart with Best Little Whorehouse GoesPublic."

There's a certain jealousy among thepeople when a man has a lot of success. He's won nine Tonys in three categories, best performance, choreography and di-rection. There's a lot of folks out to get hisass. They didn't take that serlously.

Stevie Phillips of Universal Picturescame up with the idea of doing infomer-

cials to sell tickets. It sounded like a boldnew approach to me. I didn't stop to thinkthat infomercials are generally consideredscams and might offend serious theatricalcritics. The infomercials highlighted onlythe sex and the girls, with none of thepolitical satire orWall Street stuff. The in·fomercial offended showbiz writers be-cause it was sleazy. And then it didn't selltickets!TWT: Do you think it was a good show?LK: It was good, light entertainment, butit didn't have heart like the first show. Aftera preview, my wife said, "You don't careabout the people. Nobody's gonna give adamn about these characters." That'swhen I began to worry.TWT: Did you read the reviews?LK: Those were some bad reviews. Theywere gleefully malicious! I'm still confusedabout how bad we were compared to thecritics' opinion. I know we weren't as badas they said we were. I know we weren'tterrible!TWT: Do you feel they were unfair toBeauty and the Beast as well?LK: Yes. I think they went after us becausethey couldn't get Beautyand the Beast. Wewere financed by Universal and I think theywent after us, since they couldn't touchDisney.TWT: If you could do The Best LittleWhorehouse Goes Public all over again, what would you do differently?LK: I wouldn't do it!TWT: If you could describe yourself in oneadjective, what word would you choose?LK: Angry. All of my writing and my humorcomes out of anger.TWT: Is this anger therapeutic or destruc-tive?LK: The madder I am, the funnier I write!

"our greatest asset is people-ourhuman resources," Jim Griffith

tells those assembled in the living room ofa Montrose-area home on a late Saturdaymorning recently. The small group ofpeople-a dozen or so men and women ofvarying ages and backgrounds-havegiven several hours out of their weekendto learn more about VOlunteering withSteven's House, a new residence facilityfor people with HIV and AIDS.

According to its mission statement,Steven's House will provide "intermediatecare in a homelike environment for peopleliving with HIV/AIDS," helping residents tomeet "their physical, emotional, social andspiritual needs, while preserving theirdignity." Services will be provided free ofcharge.

Griffith, who founded Steven's Houseand serves as its Executive Director, con-ceives of the project as filling a gap in thecontinuum of AIDS residential services, with a focus on providing a structured, nur-turing family environment for people whohave been discharged from a hospital orother acute care institution but who stillneed some assistance in everyday living.

A Roman Catholic monk of the Passion-

ist order, Griffith says that caring for peo-ple with HIV has taught him the meaningof suffering, and of living. A Houston resi-dent forthe past six years, he first enteredthe AIDS care field with the Foundation forInterfaith Research and Ministry [FIRM],which provides AIDS care teams and casemanagement, and has also worked theAIDS Mastery Workshop of Northern LightsAlternatives.

Steven's House is named in memory ofone of the first people with AIDS Griffithever took care of, a man who, in his words,"gave me a crash cou rse in what to do andwhat not to do .... He taught me more aboutliving with AIDS than any book, workshopor anything else ever could."

For Jane Hakala, Director of ResidentServices, growing up in a loving familymade her aware of the need to help others."I do it because I grew up in a householdwhere caring was a part of our everydaylife; my parents were good role models."Hakala, a registered nurse and mother whoworks as a health education specialist forthe Houston Independent School District, also sees her work with HIV as springingfrom a sense of duty. "We have to pay ourcommunity rent."

1WT JULY 15 - JULY 21 1994 PAGE 21

Located in a large, lovely two-storybuilding on a quiet, tree-lined street, Ste-ven's House will begin accepting residentsin the next few weeks. There are three bed-rooms providing space for up to four, aswell as large living and dining areas and afenced-in front yard. A swimming pool inbackwill be available for supervised use byresidents whose health status permits.

If initial response to word of the newfacility is any indication, there is a tremen-douS need forthe kind of service it will pro-vide. Griffith has had numerous requestsfrom hospital social workers and othersseeking to place patients who need a placeto stay until they can return to independ-ent living. After the House is filled, ap-plicants will be placed on a waiting list.Forthe near future, the House will acceptonly males, although Griffith hopes toaddress the need for such housing forwomen after a future move to a more spa-cious location.

Those attending recent volunteertrain-ing sessions have represented a mix ofmale and female, younger and older, gayand straight people interested in givingtime to assist with Steven's House, whichwill be run entirely by unsalaried staffers.Prospective volunteers spend severalhours learning about the responsibilitiesthey will assume, and are asked to con-front their feelings about AIDS and thosewith the disease. They also get a bit oftraining in practical matters like infectioncontrol, effective handwashing and how tobathe patients.

Volunteers, board members, clients andothers associated with Steven's Housesign a "Confidentiality Contract" pledgingnot to disclose the identity of residents. This helps the facility to comply with strictfederal and state regulations aimed at pro-tecting the privacy of those with HIV.

Steven's House is taking shape throughthe dedication and energy of those whohave worked to bring it to reality. Like mostfledgling nonprofit organizations, it isoperating on ashoestring and will dependheavily on the community's generosity. The project received its first big financialassist, a Harris County HOPWA [Housingfor People With AIDS] grant, last October. But Griffith stresses that it will succeedonly through the hard work of those whobelieve in its mission.

Far Right PursuesStrategyOf 'Divide and Conquer'DearTWT:

I constantly hear right-wing fundamental-ists, big-time criminals, white suprema-cists, Ku Klux Klan members and neo-Nazi/fascist skinheads proclaim Christianity,God, the Bible, "family values" andmorality. They are dolnq this to defend andjustify their big-time criminal activities, violent behavior, lawlessness, racism, bigotry, fascism and hate. This clearlyconstitutes blasphemy and mockery, contrary to what those who are doing soseem to think and say.

The radical right-wing fundamentalistmovement (or "cult," as I prefer to call it) issimply using phony Christianity; "familyvalues"; morality; presidential characterissues in the case of President Clinton;abortion; gays; unfounded AIDS scaretactics, etc. as a springboard to take overthe government at every level and at allcosts.

Right-wingers are pitting blacks againstMexicans, blacks against gays, Mexicansagainst gays, etc. in a battle designed todivide, conquer and amass the spoils forpower and control. This is the same type ofdivisive, racist, bigoted, homophobic, tasclst hate tactic that brought Adolf Hitlerto power in Nazi Germany.

I will concede that a few people ofminority status are involved in the right-wing fundamentalist movement. I refer tothese people as "right-wing Uncle Toms."

When I see how easily so many so-calledmainstream Americans are being duped bythe phony Christianity, "family values,"morality and the racist, bigoted, homo-phobtc, fascist, hate agenda of the right-wing movement, it is very easy for me tounderstand how and why Hitler was able tocome to power in Nazi Germany.

Mostly Republican incumbents andcandidates and some Democrats (likeRichard Fisher) are promoting and usingthe phony Christianity, "family values,"morality, racism, bigotry, homophobia, fascism and hate of the right wing. Thefacts clearly show that Fisher has alignedhimself with (former) President Bush andRoss Perot in the past. Bush, and mostespecially Perot, are notorious racist, bigoted, homophobic fascists.

Contrary to the opinion of many inthe gay community, Richard Fisher is asmuch a racist, bigoted, homophobic fascistas (incumbent) Kay Bailey Hutchison. Wein the gay community have a very poorchoice in the U.S. Senate race this timearound.

Contrary to the prevailing opinionof radical/phony Christian right-wingfundamentalists, conservatives andRepublicans, Texans and we in the gaycommunity have an excellent choice in therace for governor with (incumbent) AnnRichards.

More Support for IKEA'sAd CampaignDearTWT:

I am writing in response to MarkGartner's letter about IKEA ["ThankingIKEA," LETTERS, Vol. 20, No. 15]- I, too, recently received a form letter from theAmerican Family Association (how I got ontheir mailing list I'll never understand)about IKEA and how this commercial willsupposedly erode the American family aswe know it. I must wonder how manymindless idiots will read the letter from theAFA and take it as fact, never bothering toactually vi.ewthe commercial and make an

informed decision for themselves. Itappears that all too many people are willingto just sit back and let others do theirthinking for them.

Like Mark Gartner, I, too, am a customerof IKEA, and have written to Mr. Oystila, the store manager at the Houston location.A lot of gay people (men, women, trans-genderals, etc.) will find something of useto them at IKEA-as long as you're not a"label queen" hung up on bragging aboutyour furniture coming from a "she-she la-la"store costing two to three times more thanIKEA.

It is my opinion that the gay subcultureneeds to embrace such positive depictionsof our lives by a major retail store. If we areever to gain open acceptance and/ortolerance, we must show the world that gaypeople (inclusive) are just average folkswho work, pay our bills and try to leadrewarding lives that are full of love andacceptance.

I would urge each and every gay man,gay woman, transgenderal and any otherperson who identifies with the gay sub-culture to write or fax Mr. Hans Eric Oystila[Houston IKEA fax (713)688-0249].It hasbeen stated publicly by IKEA that the adswere not intended to be "pro-gay" or makea political statement, but I'm glad that amajor retail chain has finally recognizedgay people for what we are-living,breathing human beings with a collectivelystrong buying power!

support Public BroadcastingAgainst Right WingDearTWT:

I hope a lot of people got a chance tosee Before Stonewall, aired on PBSWednesday night, June 22 (since itcompeted with the Houston Rockets'championship, it's probably unlikely). Itwas a telling documentary of gay life fromthe early 1900s to the Stonewall riots. There were interviews with some of thefounders of our movement and a goodbalance was maintained between coverageof both lesbians and gay men.

Needless to say, PBS will undoubtedlybe getting lots of negative mail from thereligious right(eous). Since public televisionis more dependent on the opinions of itsviewers, a deluge of hate mail has greaterimpact on broadcast decisions.

That's why I'm hoping to inspire a fewreaders to write to PBS to tell them howimportant gay-positive programs are. They'll want to know your opinions (even ifyou don't sit at the right hand of God). Idon't usually donate to PBS, but I'vedecided to on the basis that they stand tolose money by taking such risks againstwhat's become a very financially formidableopponent of the gay cause.

To obtain the address of your local PBSaffiliate, call the number listed in your localbusiness pages telephone directory.

Terry Stone, OlCS Executive Directorfor the past five years, has left to take asimilar position with the Northwest AIDSFoundation in Seattle, Washington.

Oak lawn Community Services is acommunity-based, nonprofit organizationfounded in 1981. It provides counseling topersons affected by AIDS, AIDS educationprograms, adult day care for PWAs throughthe Daire Center, free transportation tomedical and social services for people withAIDS, and trained volunteers who supportpeople with the disease through the BuddyProject.

In the years that Stone guided the or-ganization, it grew in scope and size, andmoved to larger, more expansive offices, becoming what many believe is Dallas'premiere AIDS service, mental health andsocial service organization for the gay andlesbian community, with a $6.5 million an-nualbudget.

LifeWalk, a 10K walkathon, is one of the

ing prescriptions brought in by people whovisit Thomas Street Clinic and other countyhealth facilities is being denounced byAIDS activists and others who believe itwill endanger the health of indigent PWAswho rely on public assistance. Adding totheir anger and frustration is the fact thatpatients were apparently not informed ofthe decision.

Under the change, medically indigentPWAs who are covered by Medicare orMedicaid will be required to receive theirprimary care at Thomas Street if they alsowish to have their prescriptions filledthere. Previously, many patients have goneto their own physicians or private hospitalsfor regular care and visits, then went toThomas Street to obtain any medicationsthey had been prescribed. Medicare doesnot pay for drugs, while Medicaid (inTexas) pays for only three prescriptionsper month.

"I think it is the patients who are suffer-ing with the enforcement of this policy,"said Steven Bradley, a client of ThomasStreet who also serves as chair of theThomas Street Citizens' Advlsory Council. He added that delays created by the en-forcement change could prove dangerousfor many HIV patients, citing the admit-tedly extreme case of a person currentlyin a private hospital who has CMV and willneed to remain on intravenous drugs indef-initely. A delay of as little as two weeks inqualifying for care at Thomas Street couldhave a serious impact on that patient'shealth.

Hospital district officials insist that theyare merely enforcing a longstanding policythat until now has been widely ignored. The stricter enforcement officially wentinto effect on July 1.

Bradley stressed that the problems cre-ated by the hospital district's decision canbest be addressed through joint effortsamong the district, private hospitals andprivate physicians.

Matt Locklin, who serves as co-chair ofthe advisory council, said he first learnedof the hospital district's decision from anarticle in the Houston Chronic/e. ThomasStreet is already overwhelmed, he said, due in part to a steady increase in thenumbers of PWAs who apply for its serv-ices and to remodeling projects that areexpected to last several years. The deci-sion to stop filling outside prescriptionsWill, he believes, only add to that overload.

The controversy was expected to be thenUmber one topic at the advisory council's

monthly meeting, which was scheduledfor Wednesday afternoon. Bradley toldTWT NEWS he would ask the council for itsendorsement of his efforts to advocate forpatients on the issue. He is scheduled tomeet with Harris County Hospital Districthead Lois Moore and Dr. Susan Miller, medical director of Thomas Street Clinic,on July 20.

CITY OF DALLASPROPOSES CUTS INAIDS AND OTHERHEALTH SERVICES

Newly Formed Citizens' GroupToLobby ElectedOfficialsonIssue.

DAllAS - The proposed 1994-95 fis-cal budget for the City of Dallas includesa reduction of health services by as muchas 20 percent. Dallas citizens would loseservices for the homeless, low birthweightclinics, dental health contracts and minor-ity AIDS prevention outreach programs.

Currently, those budget reductions areoffered with options for 5, 10, 15 and 20percent cuts. Even a ten-percent cut wouldterminate the city's contract with the Dal-las County Health Department's AIDS Pre-vention Project, as well as cancel a $65,000contract with the Bethlehem Foundation, which provides transportation for peoplewith AIDS as one of its services.

In addition, the budget cuts wouldweaken efforts to report Dallas CountyAIDS cases by eliminating epidemiologystaff at the city health department.

A key City. Council budget workshopwas planned for June 27, but a majority ofCouncil members did not show up for thatmeeting, so the budget, and the proposedcuts it contains, are still in limbo. CityCouncil is now in recess, and not due tomeet again until August 8, when City Man-

ager John Ware will present the budget fora vote.

A citizens' organization, the City Healthand Human Services Coalition, has formedto try and convince Dallas Mayor SteveBartlett and City Council members not toinstitute the proposed cuts. The group hadplanned an all-out effort at the June 27Council meeting, but since that meetingwas not held, the Coalition is now tryingto reach city leaders on an individual basis.

Whether the citizens' group will be sue-cessful remains to be seen. Dallas officialshave had to trim the city's budget in eachof the past several years due to decliningproperty values, caused by a slower econ-omy and an exodus from the city properinto nearby suburbs.

tion, a nonprofit corporation created lastyear by Joseph (Jay) Henderson HollyfieldJr. of Houston several months prior tohis death on February 6, 1994, recentlyheld the first full meeting of its board ofdirectors.

The original directors included Holly-field; Terry Baggott, Hollyfield's attorney;Greg Barbuti of Austin, designated exec-utor of the Hollyfield estate; and DonaldSkipwith, a Houston attorney and longtimefriend of Hollyfield's.

Recent additions to the board includeScott Wilson of Oklahoma City; DavidWest of Ozona, Texas; Paul Carter of SanAntonio; and Gordon Goss, Keith McKee,Larry Lingle and Bill White, all of Houston.

White was elected to chair the boardduring the coming months, and two ad-ditional board members were elected,Clair Koepsel and Shelly Porter, both ofHouston.

To carry out Hollyfield's wishes, theboard affirmed that the mission of theFoundation "shall be to foster individualrights and freedoms, including direct andindirect financial aid to nonprofit gayand/or lesbian, and/or nonprofit AIDSorganizations."

The Foundation will be headquarteredin the historic DePelchin Faith Buildingat 2700 Albany, one of the properties be-queathed by Hollyfield to the Foundation.

The board also heard a report fromWhite, who heads an auction committee asprovided in Hollyfield's will, which willdispose of personal property in the es-tate through a sale which will benefit theAmerican Foundation for AIDS Research[AmFAR].

The Am FAR benefit sale is scheduled atSimpson Galleries in Houston this Sunday,July 17 at 1 p.m., and Monday, July 18 at 7p.m. Highlights of the auction include artand antiques as well as Hollyfield's cher-ished 1978 Clenet convertible.

REGISTRATION DRIVEBy FAR RIGHT IN

NORTH TEXASFALLS SHORT

But Effort ShowsContinuing PushInto StatePolitical Arena.

DALLAS - The religious right mounteda voter registration drive in five NorthTexas counties on a recent weekend, con-centrating mostly on populous DallasCounty. Organizations involved in the ef-fort had predicted that huge numberswould registertovote at many of the city'schurches, but they appear to have fallenshort of their goals.

Religious right leaders had said theywould register 25,000 new voters in theirproject, called "Patriotic Sunday," butmany of the 150 churches that were des-ignated as registration sites reported fewnew registrants. No official total was re-leased, but people involved in the effortconceded in statements to the DallasMorning News that the 25,000 figure wasnot attained.

Sponsors of the drive included the Dal-las County Christian Coalition, the FreeMarket Foundation, the American FamilyAssociation of Texas and the Texas EagleForum. The national Eagle Forum, headedby Phyllis Schlafly, has been adamant in

its denunciation of homosexuals, eventhough Schlafly's own son has come outof the closet. The Eagle Forum is alsofirmly opposed to abortion.

While they may have fallen short of theirgoal, the push to register new voters con-tinues the far right's foray into the politi-cal arena that began with the election ofRonald Reagan as president in 1980.

In Texas, religious conservatives havebeen successful in pushing out a some-what moderate Republican State Chair-man, Fred Meyer, and placing one of theirown, Dallas businessman Tom Pauken, inthat post. Sen. Phil Gramm, widely con-sidered to be a potential candidate forpresident in 1996, and fellow Sen. KayBailey Hutchison, both backed Congress-man Joe Barton for State Party Chair at theparty's recent convention. The far right'spower was so great, however, that Paukenwas handily elected.

In Virginia, the far right was instrumen-tal in Lt. Col. Oliver North's victory in theRepublican primary forthe U.S. Senate re-cently, and he is now given a good chanceat winning that race.

In Texas, the political stakes are partic-ularly high this year because Gov. AnnRichards, a Democrat, is up for reelection,as is Republican U.S. Senator Kay BaileyHutchison. Richards faces Texas Rangersowner George W. Bush and Hutchison isup against Dallas businessman RichardFisher.

Charles David Benson (above)Charles David Benson of Houston, after a long andcourageous battle, slipped away peacefully Tues-day, July 12, 1994. David was a graduate of YaleUniversity, a poet, a friend, a loving son, a musicianand a devoted lover with a strong message for all."Mayall your dreams come true" (With a DifferentHue).

A memorial service will be held in the sanctuaryof MCCR on Saturday, July 16 at 11 a.m.

Gary Wayne Smith (above)March 26, 1969 - July 3, 1994

Survived by Dennis Ray, family and friends.

"Goodbye"How easily it trips off the tongue, when said lightlyand temporarily. How often spat over the phone inthe rush to be away. How often screamed from the bottom of the stairs,or from the room down the hall. How carelessly tossed about in the mad scramblebefore the bell. How thoughtlessly murmured after a long day atschool. How taken for granted, this little word: And howmuch it hurts when it means "for good."

Goodbye, BoBoI love you

Dennis
