Open Letters was organized by IGNIS, the Literary Society of The Bhopal School of Social
Sciences (BSSS), where various participants were invited to write a letter to any living being,
object or formless entity. It was previously held two years ago, and received a positive and
enthusiastic response. In light of recent conditions, Open Letters was held on a digital platform.
It took place on July 26th 2020, starting at 5 p.m. The event showcased inspiring performances
that addressed various, difficult, and emotionally provoking themes, including but not limited
to martyrdom, sexual victimisation, impact of the pandemic, depression and heartbreak. “We
have suffered and survived”, said Moulshree Saxena in her moving letter to all assault victims
that have been denied justice. Whereas Sahil Khan’s letter was written from a martyr to his
beloved, in honor of the Kargil Soldiers. Amartya Agrawal said “Letters form words, which
form letters”, in his letter, without a sender or a receiver. And Harshita Sahajwani’s letter of
hope spoke to all those who are fighting with themselves. Some wrote letters to their friends,
some wrote to books, or to themselves. The program was hosted by Soumya Renwal, and
directed by IGNIS Coordinator and BSSS Professor Dr. Swati Sharma.
Open Letters, in its digitised form, blended an ageless tradition with modern technology,
leading to a captivating and anachronistic evening of shared experiences. It provided a
welcome outlet to the performers, a respite to the audience and served as a refreshing interlude
to this stressful environment of lock-down. IGNIS organizes a variety of programs every month
for college and out-of-college literature lovers, and welcomes the new and emerging talents in
Bhopal.
