Large crowds expected in Jakarta
The 26th edition of Manufacturing Indonesia will get underway on 2
December with large crowds – more than 37,000 – anticipated across the four days of the event which takes place at the Jakarta International Expo (JLExpo) in Kemayoran. Productivity up 55% with Bomar bandsaw
Malvern Tubular Components has over 60 years’ experience in supplying
tubular products into many diverse markets, in particular the diesel engine, generator and radiator manufacturing sectors. Formed in 1942, the company is today a subsidiary of the Tricorn Group, which specialises in tube manipulation.
Among the market sectors served by the company is power generation, an industry that has very precise requirements. So
when it became clear that Malvern Tubular’s existing large diameter tube sawing facility was not suited to meet the stringent tolerances required, the company contacted Prosaw to advise on a more applicable system.
Following investigation, Prosaw was confident that it would be able to hold the close tolerances required when sawing the 5” and 10” diameter tubes with a system that would also enjoy the additional benefit of increased productivity. A Bomar Individual
bandsaw, model 520.360 DGA NC was selected, being a machine capable of sawing up to 10” diameter tubes in mild steel or 316 stainless steel.
Manufacturing engineer, Jerry Moule, who has been delighted with the new machine’s performance, says: “The Bomar machine is not only more accurate, but the cycle time is also considerably quicker than the system it replaced, due primarily to its capacity to accommodate tubes of longer lengths as well as
its ability to cut tubes at a faster rate. These two factors are largely responsible for the substantial production cost savings we have enjoyed since installation.

Carif has new UK supportCarif, an Italy-based manufacturer of sawing machines, is partnering with
Saws UK to offer its range of bandsaws to the UK marketplace. The range comprises semi-automatic and CNC bandsaws that come with a two-year warranty as standard.
Among the latest machines to be released by Carif is a semi-automatic hydraulic saw designated 320 BSA VAR-E. The machine features a 2.2 kW electronic moto-variator with speed adjustment from 15 to 100 m/min using the front display. Metalex turns to Kasto bandsaw technology
A Kasto automatic bandsaw designed for the productive cutting of metals using a
tungsten carbide tipped (TCT) blade has been installed at the latest branch to be opened by steel and non-ferrous metals stockholder, Metalex. Located on the Gravelly Industrial Park in Birmingham, the new centre became fully operational at the start of 2015.
The KASTOtec AC4 is one of two bandsaws currently installed at the Birmingham site. Its purchase was triggered by increasing work
for a customer in the north that orders 150,000 high grade alloy steel parts per year. They are short, ranging from 7 to 12 mm in length, and are cut from 60 to 110 mm diameter stock.
Metalex was started in 1993 by Paul Nicola, managing director, who says that "cutting tough steels is around three times faster with a TCT blade than when using a bi-metal type. Speed as well as accuracy of cut is important, as it allows us to make a reasonable profit and at the same time hold
down the prices we charge customers and expedite deliveries.
“We also use TCT blades to saw stainless steel, aluminium, copper and brass on the KASTOtec up to the machine’s maximum 430 mm cutting range, and it is equally efficient at processing those materials,” he adds.
The principal reason for the high cutting performance of KASTOtec ‘carbide specification’ bandsaws is a combination of measures the German manufacturer has taken to minimise vibration, which is the main
enemy when striving to make fast, accurate cuts and maximise blade life.
The machine in Birmingham has been fitted with the Kasto Performance Cutting (KPC) package, a factory-fitted option that is said to improve productivity further. Key additions include improvements to blade guidance either side of the cutting area and other measures to dampen vibrations.For further information www.kasto.com

Sawing speed increased seven-foldDoughty Engineering – a manufacturer of rigging and lifting equipment for film, TV
and theatre – has taken delivery of a new NC circular saw from cutting technology specialist, Addison Saws. The saw, a Profilma 400V from German company Pressta Eisele, was installed at Doughty’s Hampshire manufacturing facility in August 2015. Most significantly, it has accelerated the production of the company’s range of suspension brackets – reducing the cutting time per bracket from approximately one minute to around eight seconds.
“Initially, we considered upgrading to the latest versions of
the three saws we currently use,” says general manager, Stuart Rodgers. “As a benchmark, we presently achieve approximately one cut per minute, per saw in aircraft grade aluminium extrusions – we load 3 m lengths and cut to widths of 30-50 mm. With two saws in operation at any one time, that equates to around 1000 cuts per eight hour shift.
“Addison Saws, however, were able to demonstrate that by switching to one Profilma 400V circular saw from their Pressta Eisele range, we should achieve one cut every eight seconds, or 450 cuts per hour,” he continues. “That level of
performance is seven times faster than one of our existing machines. As a result, we plan to retire two machines, keeping just one in-situ as a back-up and
releasing valuable floor space.” Designed especially for
the precise, high speed cutting of heavy duty aluminium and ferrous components, the Profilma 400V ordered by Doughty Engineering has been equipped with a 6 m in-feed roller table and an intelligent 1 m outfeed/extraction system. The latter will differentiate automatically between cut components and trim cuts, removing even the smallest particles of swarf from components and leaving them ready for final polishing/coating and assembly. NSK bearing solution proves a cut above
When bandsaw manufacturer Prosaw found that bearings were regularly failing
on automated saws that had been supplied to a prominent manufacturer of building insulation, both Prosaw and the end user needed a solution quickly. Here, NSK’s Added Value Programme (AIP), was called into action. AIP uses the expertise of NSK engineers to help customers improve efficiency, reduce breakdowns and improve profitability.
“Once Brammer, the client’s
chosen MRO supplier and an NSK authorised distributor, had alerted us to the situation, the first thing that stood out was that both Prosaw and the customer’s maintenance team were fitting good quality bearings from recognised brand manufacturers,” says Simon Grant, business development manager at NSK. “However, these bearings were in some cases only lasting a matter of hours before they seized.
“The bandsaws were being used for cutting insulation panels
to size on a busy production line,” he continues. “Here, it turned out that the insulation material produces fine abrasive particles when cut, which meant the bearings were failing due to particulate ingress.”
The obvious solution was to recommend the use of NSK Deep Groove Ball bearings with the high performance DDU sealing arrangement. These bearings are designed specifically for use in dusty environments and employ a face riding contact seal with a grease
return feature on the inside surface. They also incorporate a shoulder on the inner ring and an additional debris trap on the outside.
The results have been spectacular; the bearings on the saws now last several weeks rather than hours and are replaced during scheduled maintenance windows. The overall saving, including the cost of downtime, is in the order of hundreds of thousands of pounds.For further information www.nsk.com

Vollmer launches gang saw sharpenerVollmer says that it has taken the sharpening of gang saw blades to a new level
of speed and precision with the recent introduction of its CAG200 gang saw sharpening machine. The principle of the machine sees a grinding head moved by two CNC controlled axes over the saw blade, which is clamped over the entire surface. This permits the sequential grinding of each tooth in a single clamping arrangement.
In short, the CAG200 sees Vollmer launch a completely new generation of machine technology. While other manufacturers move the saw blade, the CAG200 clamps the whole blade for the
two-axis grinding head to move along the blade. The two-axis head permits the processing of the tooth pitch, height and shape. This technique minimises vibration, improves surface finishes and guarantees a consistently high quality and precision level over the length of the complete saw blade, says Vollmer.
The manufacturing philosophy of the CAG200 further enhances surface finish and consistency with a clamping design that will hold the blade as close as 2 mm below the grinding point. According to Vollmer, this clamping support also enables higher stock removal rates.
To generate faster production cycles, the CAG200 has a powerful motor that drives a large grinding wheel for optimum sharpening results. Furthermore, to maintain tooth quality and precision when conducting high stock removal rates, the CAG200 can be used as a wet grinding machine.
Capable of processing saw blades from 60 to 200 mm with a grinding wheel diameter capacity up to 350 mm, the CAG200 is suitable for machining blades from 1.4 to 2.6 mm thick with a tooth length from 800 to 1500 mm and a pitch from 15 to 40 mm.For further information www.vollmer-group.com

Hydmech redesigns H-14A bandsaw
The newly redesigned H-14A bandsaw from Hydmech is available in the UK from
ADS Precision Ltd. New features include a reduced rest piece and fully enclosed design for even greater safety while operating.
The H-14A features a rigid cast head, column and base which is said to reduce vibration and provide the lowest decibel sound in the sawing industry. Designed for high production cutting with a
carbide tipped blade, Hydmech says that the H-14A is unlike anything on the market. With an enclosed design for high safety, the machine uses 66% less energy than competing models due to on-demand hydraulics, which only operate when needed. Furthermore, its 25 mm remnant length option reduces material waste and saves money.
Featuring a 6.5 kW variable frequency drive motor, the H-14A
has a heavy duty shuttle vice that is powered by a ballscrew and vector motor. This provides material indexing up to 482 mm in a single stroke with multi-indexing capability.
As a further benefit, Hydmech says that customers can save money with the machine’s split front vice, where the material is clamped on both sides of the saw blade. This reduces the breakaway burr and improves the surface
finish of the cut. A cast iron guide arm connected mechanically to the front vice movable jaw provides proper guide arm spacing to fit the material being cut.
For ease of use, a touch screen controller operates the automatic cycle and allows for manual operation. With a 32 mm blade and 355 x 355 mm capacity, the new H-14A is suitable for all straight cuts.For further information www.adsprecision.com

Starrett hole saws go even fasterTwo new bi-metal hole saws that promise significant performance gains are now
available from Starrett. Fast Cut and Deep Cut will replace the company’s existing Constant Pitch and Dual Pitch respectively.
The Fast Cut hole saw combines a new tooth profile and base material, with enhanced heat and wear resistance, to provide a smoother, faster cut on a wide range of materials, says Starrett. It is especially suited to cutting stainless and mild steel sheet, and will also cut through tubes with a wall thickness of up to 3 mm.
By changing the tooth pitch from 6 to 5.5 TPI, Starrett’s
engineering team has created enough space to improve the profile of the teeth to enhance the cutting action, and also increase the gullet for rapid and effective chip clearance.
Changing the bi-metal base material specification has also enhanced cutting efficiency for the customer. According to Starrett, moving to a new material specification with 8% cobalt has increased the saw’s resistance to both wear and elevated heat during use.
Compared with the previous Constant Pitch hole saw, Fast Cut can operate up to 30% quicker and increases edge life by up to 20%
depending on the application and cutting conditions.
The new Deep Cut saw combines the tried and tested tooth form and set from the previous Dual Pitch product, but with a new high cobalt material for enhanced heat and wear resistance. It offers the same 20% increase in cutting life under the right conditions. Deep Cut also features an increased hole saw depth of 51 mm, up from 41 mm, and is said to be suitable for cutting metal of more than 3 mm thickness, tubes with a wall thickness of greater than 3 mm and wood up to 51 mm.
