ADIPEC 2016 exhibition is resounding success
Xylem has inaugurated a manufacturing facility in Jebel Ali, Dubai. The new 19,000 sq
m facility – the company’s first in the region – will produce pumps and provide integrated services and support to Xylem’s customers across the MENA region. As part of the inauguration, Xylem Middle East also launched the Flygt Concertor (pictured), the world’s first wastewater pumping system with integrated intelligence.

On 25-27 April, the business world for used machinery and equipment will meet in
Augsburg. Some international visitor groups, including those from Egypt, Armenia, China, India, Iraq, Iran, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, Turkey and the Ukraine, have already registered for ReTec 2017 and the show is getting ready for trade visitors from all over the world. Enquiries from about a dozen additional international visitor groups have also been received.
In November, ReTEC participated in the UMEX 2016 exhibition in Chennai, India. At this trade fair for used machinery in the Asian region, visitors showed great interest in ReTEC. Among those supporting ReTEC is the FDM (German Trade Association for Machine Tools + Tooling) and the EAMTM (European Association of Machine Tool Merchants), while among the priority areas of the fair are metalworking machines and machine tools. Largest aerospace casting facility
A new plant capable of producing some of
the biggest titanium aerospace castings in the world is nearing completion at AMRC Castings’ facilities on the outskirts of Sheffield. The furnace is capable of melting the 1000 kg of titanium required to make a 500 kg casting and has three interchangeable bodies, which give it the versatility to produce components with a finished weight ranging upwards from 60 kg. The first test melts are due this week. AMRC Castings’ new furnace is part of a major investment and R&D programme that is designed to enable UK companies to break into global markets for large-scale titanium aerospace engine and structural components. Precision engineering specialist Dawson
Shanahan has opened a dedicated apprentice training school at its Welshpool-based engineering facility. The company works closely with colleges in the local area to provide apprentices with the training and skills they need to pursue a successful career in the engineering sector. Following the opening of the training school, the company’s apprentices now have access to a dedicated classroom to learn about the theoretical side of engineering. UK industry’s most talented learners, apprentices and technicians were crowned
Skills Show 2016 champions after three days of intense competition – with six of the seven girls competing in Semta’s engineering competition making it on to the podium. Katie Goodwill of Rolls-Royce (pictured left with Emily Whittaker of Semta) and Christine McDowell of Belfast Metropolitan College struck gold, Eva Blessing Onyelou from Middlesex University and Hannah Frost of UTC Sheffield took silver, while Nicole Catney of Belfast Metropolitan College and Kendal Irvine of JCB Transmissions were awarded Bronze in Semta’s engineering competitions, which saw 116 regional heat winners battle it out for medals.
They were among more than 500 talented young people who took part in competitions covering 61

visited Renishaw’s headquarters in Gloucestershire at the end of last month for a tour of the company’s main R&D facilities, where they witnessed new technology developments in the fields of precision measurement, metal 3D printing and healthcare.
The visit came in the week that the Prime Minister announced the first steps in a new
Industrial Strategy for the UK that will include a long-term commitment to research and innovation, including an increase in government investment worth £2bn per year by 2020 for R&D and a new Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund to back priority technologies such as robotics. LPW Technology Ltd, a specialist in developing, processing and supplying metal

Gardner Aerospace Holdings Ltd is set to be acquired by the Chinese company Shaanxi
Ligeance Mineral Resources Co Ltd (SLMR). Better Capital PCC Ltd, Gardner’s parent company, announced that it had received a cash offer and entered into exclusive discussions with SLMR and its subsidiary Chengdu Aerospace Superalloy Technology (CAST).The purchase price offered by

FSG Tool & Die, based in Llantrisant, south Wales,
has installed a Perfect PFG80-150AHD cantilever-type surface grinder from RK International Machine Tools.
FSG claims to be the largest privately-owned ‘design and build’ toolmaking company in Europe. Covering sectors such as pharmaceutical/medical, automotive and plastic packaging, investment in the latest manufacturing technologies is what helps the company
maintain its market position. As tooling has become more
complex in recent years, the size of die sets has also increased. With this in mind, FSG Tool & Die recently reviewed its surface grinding capacity, looking to replace an existing machine that had seen extensive service with something that would bring the company up to date and provide greater capacity. The result was the arrival of the Perfect PFG80-150AHD.
Although this surface grinder
is the smallest machine in Perfect’s cantilever range, it still comes with a table size of 800 x 1500 mm, which covers the vast majority of work at FSG Tool & Die. Moreover, the extra size of the table provides the option of loading multiple smaller components to increase productivity.
“The increase in table size is allowing us to work in different ways; to improve throughput and grind larger parts that would have previously gone out
to subcontract suppliers,” says grinding team leader, Simon Elliott. “Prior to placing the order we looked at a number of options before finalising our selection. The conversations we had with RK International reassured us that they were not just selling a machine, but wanted to make sure we were getting the right machine for our needs. FSG finds large grinder a perfect fit

cylindrical grinding machine is now featured as a demonstration unit at the Engineering Technology Group’s Permanent Trade Show in Southam, Warwickshire. This multi-purpose machine has a reputation as an ‘all-rounder’, being equally adept at processing production grinding work or fulfilling small batch quantities and 1-off work as encountered in toolroom or prototyping environments.
The machine featured in Southam has a 650 mm grinding capacity between centres, although longer 1000 and 1500 mm capacities are available. The model is also the external wheel-head option designed to offer ease-of-use coupled to high levels of productivity. A universal wheel-head version with two external and one internal wheel is also available.
A key factor in the design of these machines was the ongoing need for high geometric accuracy

High-end manufacturing solutions for the aerospace
sector are provided by Bowmill Engineering from several factory units on the Nuffield Industrial Estate in Poole. In the finishing and assembly department, machined parts are deburred carefully using a variety of finishing practices. Recently, the company decided to augment these by installing a PDJ Vibro EVT-320 vibratory trough alongside its existing vibratory bowl machine, which was at full capacity.
It is employed for smoothing sharp edges and finishing the surfaces of aluminium components automatically. Many are destined for landing gear on Airbus passenger aircraft, so the finish and cosmetic appearance must be of high quality. Any slight
imperfection in manual deburring or marks left by polishing out cutter step-overs are now removed as part of a 10-minute rumbling cycle in the trough.
Component production rates have continued to rise at Bowmill
Engineering, which earlier this year necessitated a rethink of the company’s finishing equipment. It led to the refitting of a new deburring facility to raise productivity as well as to establish a higher level of
repeatability.Additionally, part dimensions
have been increasing, the largest requiring rumbling now being 385 x 315 x 70 mm. To be effectively finished, a component of this size would require a very large circular bowl, so Bowmill Engineering decided to opt for a rectangular trough vibrator.
PDJ Vibro was the chosen supplier, as the price was competitive, the company was prepared to let the subcontractor part exchange a vibratory bowl, and the trough was available ex-stock from PDJ’s Bletchley showroom and technical centre. Erlson Precision Components’ 7000 sq m
product development and production facility in Skelmersdale is the company’s centre for producing precision machined, electron beam welded and balanced turbocharger shaft and rotor assemblies. With this in mind, finishing operations, such as highly precise grinding to micron tolerances, have become key.
The importance of these processes are even more relevant when production targets
of 33,000 units a week are maintained for passenger cars and a further 2000 a week for commercial vehicle and off-highway applications.
To meet this demand, the company has invested some £2.7m over the past two years with a major focus on its grinding capability where <4 µm tolerances are demanded on turbo shafts, along with Cpk of 1.33. As a result, some 21 Toyoda cylindrical, angle head and groove grinders have been
installed by 2D CNC Machinery in recent years, with a further machine currently on order.
“Toyoda is our prime production grinding machine builder as they have a reputation for meeting the rigorous demands of the automotive industry in terms of longevity, capability, reliability and consistency of process,” states director of technical services Mark Corns. “In our case, the high orders of versatility are important, allowing us to easily
reconfigure the basic machine for different applications or to meet process changes.”
2D CNC has recently sourced an angle head cylindrical grinding machine and is currently performing process capability trials ready for installation. Prompted by the desire to provide high-quality tooling
to gunsmiths, primarily chamber reamers, head-space gauges and rifling buttons, Border Ballistics Technologies (BBT) was recently established by Geoffrey Kolbe, an expert marksman and acknowledged and widely published authority on the subject of ballistics. Here, a brand new Anca MX5 CNC grinder is already in situ.
“I knew the choice of tool and cutter grinder would be
critical to the success of my new enterprise, so I paid particular attention to the accuracy and surface finish capabilities of the various options,” he explains. “Given that I would be producing one-offs and specials, speed of changeover and total grinding time were also major considerations.”
The MX5 grinder from Anca scored highly on all of Mr Kolbe’s criteria, so he was happy to place an order. The company duly produced its first chamber
reamer, a 308 Win finisher, in July 2016.
“Having then chambered a gun barrel with the reamer, I was happy to report that it worked perfectly,” says Kolbe. “The reamer’s surface finish was excellent, with no witness marks or pick up. Furthermore, the tool was also stable and generated no chatter at all during cutting operations.
“The assistance given by Anca UK’s staff has been invaluable in the development stage of my
business, it has also helped that I am able to write the necessary manufacturing programs off-line with the use of ANCA’s Cim3D,” he continues. “The software aids our efficiency, as a program for the next production run can be written offline while the current reamer is being ground. We will soon be able to ramp-up production and provide quick turnaround across a range of cartridge designs.”For further information www.anca.com

BBT on target for production gains
Sunnen’s new SVL-2115 automated lapping
machine brings increased productivity and part consistency to what is traditionally a manual process. Based on the same machine platform as the SV-2100 honing system, the SVL-2115 provides single set-up processing of hydraulic valves, sleeves, fuel system components and other parts that are prone to distortion when honed. The walkaway system uses an index table to automatically lap and air gauge bores throughout the cycle. Gauge readings are fed back to the control and the
cycle is repeated until the parts are within specification.
“Automated lapping is more consistent than manual and there are fewer workers with the skills necessary for precision manual lapping,” says product manager Phil Hanna. “For very expensive components an automatic lapping process reduces the possibility of ruined parts due to human error. Since lapping is usually the last process during the machining of a workpiece, if the lapping is not correct, all the work to get the part produced up to that point is wasted.”
The Sunnen lapping system
handles workpiece diameters from 6.5 to 20 mm and lengths up to 12 times the bore diameter, not to exceed 200 mm. The spindle speed range is 100-2000 rpm during lapping, but is capable of slow speeds for non-powered steps, such as lapping paste application or slow-rotation bore entry. Stroker speed is 0-350 SPM, with stroke length optimised to achieve a high degree of cylindricity.For further information www.sunnen.com
