In her thesis, Development of strategies for effective simulation-based learning in the undergraduate

nursing education at nursing colleges in United Arab Emirates: A mixed method study, the promovenda

utilised the complex mixed methods of the exploratory sequential mixed methods and e-Delphi technique.

This method yielded findings that might help nurse educators and decision-makers in nursing colleges to

implement effective simulation-based learning in undergraduate nursing education. The recommendations

include the adoption of a simulation-based learning strategy with the following aims: to integrate simulation-

based learning into the undergraduate nursing curriculum and college mission and vision, to strengthen

inter-professional communication and collaboration, to strengthen innovative teaching and learning

strategies in simulation-based learning, to improve the financial resources for simulation-based learning,

and to strengthen collaborations with public and private clinical practice and other colleges.

In her thesis, Upper limb muscle strength and endurance as predictors of successful extubation in

mechanically ventilated patients: A predictive correlational study, the promovenda showed that successful

extubation of mechanically ventilated patients could be predicted by physiotherapists using a newly

developed prediction equation based on exercise endurance and the number of days ventilated.

Determining extubation readiness and successful weaning from mechanical ventilation is a challenge that

physicians, nurses and physiotherapists commonly face. Predictors for successful extubation are therefore

paramount. Prolonged mechanical ventilation is associated with an increase in nosocomial infections,

respiratory muscle weakness and intensive care unit acquired weakness (ICU-AW). The newly developed

prediction equation will help physiotherapists develop rehabilitation protocols to manage and prepare

patients for extubation optimally. Successful extubation may decrease the ICU length of stay, hospital length

of stay and financial expenditure. It may also increase the patient’s functional ability post-ICU and hospital

discharge.

In her thesis, Workplace culture and quality of intrapartum care: an emancipatory practice development

study, the promovenda explored the outcomes of transforming the workplace culture, specifically the quality

of intrapartum care when implementing a practice development process. She demonstrated the feasibility

of implementing a practice development process over two years and empowered midwives as practice

development facilitators. The study further showed that by implementing a practice development process

to transform the workplace culture to become more person-centred, the quality of intrapartum care

improved, multidisciplinary teamwork developed, and a learning culture emerged. The promovenda

provided a workable alternative for the current level of intrapartum care, enhanced understanding of what

quality of intrapartum care entails and was the first to evaluate the effect of workplace culture

transformation on the quality of intrapartum care.

In her thesis, Effect of 12 weeks fish supplementation of an enhanced usual diet on cognition of resource

limited independently living elderly in a retirement village: A randomised controlled trial, the promovenda

investigated an affordable, food-based approach to the prevention of cognitive decline. The Mediterranean-

DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diet was adjusted context-appropriately. While all

participants received an enhanced diet after a no-intervention run-in phase to the study, the focus for the

intervention group was on omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acid-rich fish (canned pilchards and fish spread).

Following the intervention, the intervention group had a significantly higher cognition score than the control

group. Simultaneously, related red blood cell biomarker concentrations and intake of relevant dietary fatty

acids had increased considerably. The study suggests that the intake of omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acid-

rich fish, integrated into an adjusted MIND diet, may support cognition in elderly persons.

In her thesis, Factors related to resting energy expenditure and physical activity of 6-9-year old children in

two primary schools in the City of Tshwane metropolitan area, the promovenda aimed to determine the

relationship between sex and population group, on the one hand, and resting energy expenditure (REE) and

physical activity (PA) of participating children, on the other, while taking phenotypic mediating factors

(weight, height and body composition) and the children’s context into account. The study results indicated

that within the context of a similar socio-economic status and PA environment, the REE and PA of black

African participants was lower than in white participants, regardless of differences in phenotypes.

Differences in REE between sexes were not significant, but girls had a lower PA than boys. The results of this

study emphasised the need for population-specific prediction of REE and PA intervention.

In her thesis, The indigenous perspective of the meaning and treatment modalities of dysmenorrhoea

among the Batlokwa women of Limpopo province, the promovenda used photovoice and Lekgotla

discussion guided by Africana Womanism theory to engage the Batlokwa Traditional Health Practitioners

(THP) and Indigenous Knowledge Holder (IKH). The aim was to rouse and recover community health

resources to be utilised at primary health care services. The study provided knowledge on how the Batlokwa

women view, prevent and treat dysmenorrhea. The findings also highlighted the roles that THP and IKH

women play in preventing and treating dysmenorrhea. The knowledge gained was used to develop

strategies to empower Batlokwa women with dysmenorrhea knowledge. The developed strategies were

directed towards increasing knowledge, primary healthcare resources and opportunities regarding

menstruation and dysmenorrhea. Furthermore, the developed strategies may increase public education

and awareness about the importance of indigenous knowledge.

In her thesis, Evaluating the outcomes of professional socialisation guidelines in the clinical learning

environment, the promovenda, in the three-phased mixed-method design, utilised the i-PARIHS framework

to guide the implementation process. In Phase 1, participant observation was conducted to explore the

current professional socialisation of student nurses. Results yielded one theme and four categories

identifying some challenges regarding professional socialisation of student nurses during their placement

in the medical-surgical wards of a public hospital in the North West Province of South Africa. The results

from Phase 1 were used to guide Phase 2 in which professional nurses used an emancipatory practice

development approach to curb the identified challenges. In Phase 3, a qualitative exploratory design was

used to evaluate the outcomes. Results revealed several enablers and barriers to guideline implementation

in the medical-surgical wards. The study makes recommendations for clinical practice, research and nursing

education.
