Cav Nation! It has been a joy to have the privilege to engage with so many of you on what our nation needs and how Walsh University can be as impactful as possible.Last semester I was able to meet with alumni (now 15,000 strong!) at nine different locations as I extended my Listening Tour nationwide – thank you to our alumni director Steph and her team for making that happen!I am struck with how committed our alumni are with taking their place in service to others in their workplace, their families, and their communities. Thank you so much – we are so proud of YOU and look forward to creating and sustaining our 40 – 60 year relationships that extend beyond the time you invested in your education while at Walsh University. We turn our attention in this issue to our founders. We honor the 200th anniversary of the Brothers as we run up to the 60th anniversary of the project they created here in North Canton. While our interests remain in furthering their work, we pause to recognize just how special these men have been to our world.Let’s also spend some time offering you some insight into the work of our alumni as well as one of our campus initiatives to build more alumni! Finally, we also want to acknowledge and extend our deepest appreciation to so many benefactors who invest in America with gracious gifts supporting Walsh University. Building leaders is what we do … and “giving while living” is the singularly most distinctive attribute of the American way of life. Y’all are so generous … we could not do our work without your support! We (Drenda and Me) are so blessed to join with all of you in this noble mission … thank you for who you are, for what you stand for, and for all that you continue to do. Our Lady of Perpetual Help … ora pro nobis!

Y’All Rock!

Walsh University Celebrates Winter GraduatesWalsh University celebrated the personal and professional accomplishments of 225 graduates with a Baccalaureate Holy Mass and Commencement Ceremony on Sunday, December 15. Walsh’s newest alumni represent 10 states and three countries, with 25 who are legacy children/grandchildren of alumni. The event was livestreamed to families as far away as Saudi Arabia.

Internationally renowned Catholic scholar and president of Donnelly College Msgr. Stuart Swetland served as Keynote Speaker and was presented with a Walsh University Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters. Msgr. Stuart W. Swetland, S.T.D., was appointed the seventh President of Donnelly College in Kansas City, KS, in 2014, where he also serves as a Professor of Leadership and Christian Ethics.

“God has a plan for each one of you. Each of you is called to be holy, is called to be a Saint,” said Msgr. Swetland. “Each of you has a particular vocation, a unique way of serving this world that God has intended for you to do. Bring God and His love into where you work. Class of 2019, open your hearts to God’s love.”

Division of Education Secures State of Ohio Improving Literacy Partnership GrantIn support of the Ohio Department of Education’s (ODE) ongoing literacy initiative, Walsh University is restructuring its existing reading course curricula to expand reading science for education students and faculty. In support of this initiative, Walsh University is one of only seven institutions in the state of Ohio to receive an Ohio Deans Compact on Exceptional Children Improving Literacy Partnership Grant.

Regional partners include school districts and State Support Teams representing Stark, Ashtabula, Columbiana, Holmes, Wayne, Mahoning and Trumbull counties. Walsh will be the first university in Northeast Ohio to implement the program.

“Starting this January, Walsh will be the only university in Northeast Ohio featuring reading science as our foundation,” said Walsh Associate Professor of Graduate Education David Brobeck, Ph.D. “We made a commitment to transition our reading program, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels, to the science of reading because the research is clear – it serves all students. Whether the student is an outstanding reader or a reader with challenges, through the science of reading process, we can reach them all.”

Student-Produced Videos Honored at Walsh Film FestivalAs the culminating event of the First-Year Institute (FYI) Digital Storytelling Project, Walsh University hosted its second Film Festival on Thursday, November 14, to honor the creative talents and finished digital projects of Walsh’s freshman class. Mimicking the style and excitement of the Academy Awards, the formal-attire event included a red carpet, oversized Emmy statues and roving reporters.

This fall, Walsh first-year students created documentaries reflecting their first semester in college to earn their first digital badge in Creativity. Three finalists were honored for their completed projects with a “Walshie” statue. The entries included a mix of humor, heart and personal accounts of life at Walsh as a first-year student.

Campus-wide, the Walsh Advantage digital badge student recognition program was implemented in 2018-19 as an official credential that validates a broad scope of learning not evidenced on a traditional academic transcript.

More than 350+ Middle School Girls Participate in Learn to Code EventWalsh was host to more than 350 middle schools girls from Summit and Stark Counties, representing nine different school districts for the second “Girls Who Code” event on December 17. With more than 80 industry professional volunteers, the event drew students from Akron-NIHF, Alliance Middle School, Canton City Lehman Middle School, Canton City Early College Academy, Canton City STEAMM, Canton’s Accelerating Innovative Minds Academy, Dalton Middle School, Perry Local Edison Middle School and Plain Local School District.

“The idea was to create an exciting, volunteer-based day in which middle school girls could learn from teachers, faculty, business partners and each other about elements of coding and technology relevant today such as drones, robotics and basics of computer operations,” said 2019 event co-organizer and Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences Michael Dunphy, Ph.D.

From their home in La Mennais Hall, at the heart of campus, the Brothers of Christian Instruction have quite literally watched their creation grow around them. Since the University’s inception in 1960, the Brothers have been an active presence at Walsh, serving as spiritual counselors and custodians of mission, while bearing the responsibilities that come from formal titles such as founder, president, professor and mentor to the more than 15,000 alumni who have passed through Walsh's classrooms.

“We are men of prayer first,” said Br. Walter Zwierchowski, FIC. “Prayer is number one for us and everything flows from that. We are not social workers. We are men of prayer. That prayer life calls us to our mission to bring Jesus Christ to every person we meet.”

Originally founded in 1819 by two Breton priests, Jean-Marie de la Mennais and Gabriel Deshayes, the Brothers of Christian Instruction endeavored to carry religious education all over the world, including North and South America, Africa and Asia. As the international teaching order marks its Bicentennial Anniversary celebrations around the world this year, they do so with the assurance that their mission is alive, and flourishing, at Walsh University.

“As Brothers of Christian Instruction, we believe that the life we live here on Earth is about the possibility of meeting God,” said Br. Guillermo Davila, FIC. “Life is an opportunity, an environment where you can find God. We enjoy interacting with young adults because relationships are a basic element of our identity. When it comes to participating in service, some students are motivated by their faith, some by their values. We are able to meet them where they are on their own path because those elements are also a part of our mission.”

Continuing the Work of the HeartThe sound of hymnals fill the hallway as Walsh’s resident Brothers welcome students to celebrate Holy Mass with them each morning in the La Mennais Chapel. Later that day, student laughter and the sounds of cooking can be heard emanating from

the kitchen as members of The Mennaisian Family work together to prepare meals for the Alliance Catholic Worker House. Whether in prayer, service or recreation, it is Walsh’s Brothers of Christian Instruction, who continue to unite the campus community as a family.

“I think that most students want to be involved in things they believe can make a difference. Young adults are ready to be challenged. They do not shy away from helping others, not just on campus, but also in the community. We are here to help them discover their own way to serve.”

Walsh sophomore Eliana Molitor is a Biology major and Honors student who has spent the past two years working with the Brothers as they serve meals at the Worker House. This year, the on-campus student organization attracted more than 40 members.

“We are blessed to be able to interact with them whether it’s through service projects or just stopping to chat in-between classes. The Brothers have been living Walsh’s mission

of service their whole lives, and, as students, we can definitely learn from their example.”

In recent years, Walsh University has implemented several initiatives to ensure that the Brothers’ mission and Catholic faith will continue to guide Walsh University. Walsh students travel to the Notre Dame Spiritual Center in Alfred, Maine, each summer for a one-week service experience that provides a unique opportunity to personally connect with the legacy of Walsh’s founding order. Walsh’s Global Learning Program hosts several international opportunities to work alongside the Brothers in countries such as Haiti, Uruguay, Tanzania and Uganda. In addition, the Board of Directors includes three Brothers of Christian Instruction or their designees.

To mark the bicentennial, Brothers Zwierchowski and Desjarlais also helped to establish a Walsh branch of The Mennaisian Family on campus. This international organization helps to bring to life the characteristics of the Brothers on campus including a joyful presence, sense of familial accountability, dedication to the salvific work of education and commitment to servant leadership.

Walsh officially celebrated the 200th Anniversary of the Brothers with a week of activities during the annual Founders' Week celebrations in November. The week began with Holy Mass and continued with fellowship events such as AGAPE Latte, Brothers' Cup Kickball Tournament, Crepes with the Brothers and daily opportunities to join the Brothers in prayer and Adoration.

Today, there are more than 750 Brothers in 26 countries on five continents. Approximately 150 young Brothers are currently in training and committed to providing a values-based Catholic education to all who seek it.

Meet Walsh’s FIC North Canton Brothers To ensure that the Brothers remain an active and vibrant part of the Walsh community, the University is home to five resident Brothers in La Mennais Hall. Walsh’s international community of Brothers helps to enrich the FIC presence on campus.

About the FIC Founders Father Gabriel Deshayes (1767-1841), born December 6, 1767, Deshayes was a child of the countryside and a son

of a peasant-butcher with a modest income. His horizon was that of a rural world that drew sustenance from the soil. He was thirteen years the senior of Father Jean-Marie. When the French Revolution began in 1789, Gabriel Deshayes was a Seminarian before being ordained a Deacon in September 1790. The property of the clergy was confiscated and priests were ordered to take an oath to separate from the Pope. Refusing this order, and impatient to become a priest, Gabriel traveled to the nearby Island of Jersey where he was ordained a priest on March 4, 1792.

Father Jean-Marie de la Mennais (1780-1860) was born September 8, 1780, and belonged to the wealthy bourgeoisie of Saint-

Malo, a member of a family accustomed to exercising local and provincial responsibilities. His was a world turned towards the open sea and towards adventure. As a young teenager during the French Revolution, Jean-Marie de la Mennais often showed boldness and generosity to help persecuted priests. He was self-taught, studied alone and benefitted from the affluent culture of his family.

Diamond Grille in Akron

Walsh Times WINTER 2020 ❘ 8

Standing beneath the illuminated Diamond Grille sign at 77 West Market Street in Akron, Walsh nursing alumna Katie (Hammond) Stack ’11 reflects on the unexpected journey that brought her from critical care nurse to restaurant proprietor. As she spearheads a new chapter in the steakhouse’s 85-year history, Katie credits Walsh’s liberal arts education for her seamless transition from healthcare to owner of one of Akron’s most iconic venues.

“At 18, you really have no idea what’s coming down the road for you in life. I think it’s important to have as much knowledge as you can about a variety of subjects.” said Katie.

As only the third owners in its history, Katie and her husband, John, purchased the Diamond Grille from brothers Nick and Ted Thomas, whose family owned the restaurant since 1941. The building was originally a carriage repair shop until Vito Strongoli renovated the property into a restaurant in 1935. The interior décor is reminiscent of the 1960s retro modern design, with oversized wooden booths, low lighting and a stylish atmosphere. According to Stack, the food is simply prepared and relies on the highest quality ingredients including fresh seafood daily and steaks so tender they can be cut with a butter knife.

Some members of the Diamond Grille staff have worked together for more than 30 years. They are like family. Katie should know; she was a server at the Grille for almost 10 years. But the family connection runs deeper and can be traced back to her grandfather, George Wojno, who was friends with Nick and Ted.

“My grandma Mary told me to come here and ask for a job when I was in my early 20s. I was so nervous when I walked in and there was Nick, sitting behind this big scary wooden desk in an office in the basement. Now, that desk is my desk,” said Katie. “I’m so grateful to Walsh because I really do think my education prepared me. As I was going through this process, just having a

bachelor’s degree from a respected university like Walsh was an influence. I think it helped people to take me seriously when I was attempting to do something I had never done before.”

Like many young professionals, Katie pursued her degree in nursing with enthusiasm for the healthcare field. But when she felt the desire to make a switch, she didn’t hesitate. While the average person may change careers five to seven times during their working life, a liberal arts degree offers a versatile and solid foundation for a wide range of jobs.

“My grandma once told me that your career is a culmination of all of the jobs you’ve had in a lifetime,” said Katie. “In a million years, I would’ve never thought that someday I’d be the owner of a restaurant. It all fell into place because I was open to the opportunity. I feel a responsibility, a sense of legacy, when I think of this place. I just can’t imagine an Akron without the Diamond Grille.”

“When I think of education, it is not just that K-12 model. It’s a broader view that has social and cultural implications,” said Dr. Warnke. “Our role is to use the tools and resources at our disposal to gather and

encourage dialogue, insight and problem solving that empowers our stakeholders.”

“Walsh University is not trying to set itself up to be the answer to these problems,” said Dr. Rudd. “We are trying to listen, initiate and facilitate conversations. As an educational institution, we want to be the place that offers the tools for dialogue, helps to simmer ideas and brings everyone to the table.”

As universities across the country reimagine their role and purpose in the world, Walsh University is building a bridge from academic life

to the community through interdisciplinary institutes that serve as a springboard for scholarly research and resourceful solutions.

As the digital age of social media continues to broadcast a steady stream of news into our daily lives, the existence of the campus “bubble”

isolating young adults has dissolved. Now, more than ever, automation and technological advancements have transformed traditional

career pathways and challenged the very existence of trusted occupations deemed secure professions for graduates. Universities are forging

a new life in their role as hubs of innovation, working with community partners to link smart people with sophisticated research in the

pursuit of the common good.

Whether it is local, global or both, through the University’s five interdisciplinary institutes, Walsh students and faculty are breaking down

the traditional barriers between town and gown by creating real world solutions to issues of food insecurity, healthcare, civic engagement

and economic development. The Institutes are purposefully collaborative across all majors, minors and professional backgrounds.

“One of our most significant initiatives has been the Mental Health Symposium,” said Dr. Hammel. “The focus of this year’s conference was the impact of mental health and addiction on children and families, innovations in the treatment of mental health and addiction, and the impact of policy and government on mental health and addiction. The symposium offered a diverse perspective on looking at policy, the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) model for addressing childhood trauma and a practitioner’s view on how our local school systems are addressing these issues.”

Food Design InstituteTheme: Exploring issues of food, hunger and sustainability utilizing human-centered design methods

Contact: Jennifer Vokoun, Associate Professor of Graphic Design, [email protected]

“It’s not just about fighting hunger. We’re looking at all the different touch points

from quality ingredients, safe production, transportation and how we can collaborate together. So, as we move through these spaces, we are making connections with partners that really allow for meaningful opportunities for our students,” said Vokoun. “I was attending the Ohio Food Policy Summit in Columbus, and next to Ohio State Walsh was the second most highly represented university at the event. This really speaks to what representatives of a mission-driven university can do.”

Expanding the Scope of the ClassroomThe Institutes provide students an opportunity to engage in relevant issues, work side-by-side with faculty, often from other disciplines, and start to build a network in the community. For faculty members, the work of the Institutes is an opportunity to expand the focus of their research and resources.

“The idea of the Institutes really came out of our goals to support faculty research and create a space where faculty from different disciplines can work together for a common purpose,” said Douglas Palmer, Ph.D., Provost.

“Our faculty care a lot about the communities in which they live and about our students who will work in those communities to make a difference. These Institutes were designed to bring those two interests together in a meaningful way to direct our scholarship, teaching and service to have a positive impact on the world.” Douglas Palmer, Ph.D., Provost

Walsh welcomed alumnus Bruce Altieri to the Board this past July. Altieri brings more than 32 years of experience to the Board. A native of Canton, Ohio,

Altieri graduated from Walsh in 1982 with his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Accounting and Management. At the urging of Walsh faculty members, including Br. Robert Francoeur and Professor William Zumbar, he went on to attend Vanderbilt University Law School.

“As a student, I received invaluable insight and guidance from the faculty at Walsh,” said Altieri. “While the reputation and footprint of Walsh University has advanced throughout the decades, I’m very much appreciative of how the foundation

established by the Brothers of Christian Instruction, to help each student personally to develop through a values-based education, remains timeless. That’s a strong attribute for Walsh University. Being asked to serve on the Board is a privilege.”

He began his career in 1985 at Touche Ross (currently Deloitte Touche) where he served as Senior Tax Analyst. He went on to serve as a Manager of Corporate Tax for 10 years at Rubbermaid Incorporated before joining The Lincoln Electric Company in 1998.

Lincoln Electric Company is the world leader in the design, development and manufacture of arc welding products, robotic arc-welding systems, plasma and oxyfuel cutting equipment and has a leading global position in the brazing and soldering alloys market. Today, as a Director, Corporate Tax, Altieri is responsible for

resolving tax controversy, participating on mergers and acquisitions, overseeing transfer pricing and economic analysis regarding cross-border transactions, and securing government credits, grants and other incentives. In addition to Walsh, his professional affiliations include former Chair and Past President of the Cleveland Chapter of Tax Executive Institute and member of the Ohio Bar Association. In addition to Walsh University, organizations of special interest include St. Michael the Archangel Parish (Canton), University of Cincinnati DAAP Fashion Program and Jackson High School-Jackson School for the Arts. Bruce is married to Walsh alumna Beth Marcinkoski, M.D., ’82, whom he met during his final semester senior year. They’ve been married for 32 years and, together, have been blessed with three children.

Walsh University’s newest Director on our Board joins the committee with extensive experience in accounting, as well as a unique connection to Walsh’s Brothers of Christian Instruction.

New Campus 180 Initiative Focuses on Improving Walsh Student Experience

In August 2019, Walsh announced the launch of a new enterprise-wide initiative, Campus 180, to improve the Walsh experience for all students through targeted goals that were developed based on Walsh’s historical enrollment and retention data trends. Through the leadership of Provost Douglas Palmer, Ph.D., Associate Vice President and Dean of Academic Administration Edna McCulloh, Ed.D., and Vice President for Enrollment Management Rebecca Coneglio, critical issues and needs were identified by a student survey in spring 2019 and prioritized with guidance and support from education partner Ruffalo Noel Levitz.

“Ultimately, the outcomes of this initiative are to enhance our students’ educational experience and increase our retention rate, 4 & 6 year graduation rates and to decrease attrition,” said Dr. McCulloh. ”Reaching these institutional goals will have a lasting positive affect on the entire Walsh community.”

Through the Campus 180 initiative, the entire Walsh community has pledged to work together to enhance the visibility and public perception of Walsh University, provide a holistic educational experience for all students, decrease student debt through improved graduation rates and fulfill the Walsh mission to provide a quality education to all students.

To date, Campus 180 has resulted in the following initiatives that have either been implemented or are currently in progress:

• Four-Year Graduation and Tuition Guarantee

• All majors can now be completed in eight semesters

• The total credit hour reduced to 120, making it easier for students to graduate on time

• Maroon and Gold Career Promise rewards students for earning their digital badges, fulfilling an internship, and completing their career portfolio

• Better financial transparency by including total financial aid reward dollars with estimated out-of-pocket costs in students’ reward packets

• For the first time, a portion of freshman orientation will be online with videos and tutorials in advance to make the on-campus experience less hectic and more meaningful

• A redesigned website with a new Parent & Family Connection section to keep families connected

• An online version of graduate information sessions, providing prospective students with on-demand access to information about our grad programs

• A new First Year Institute for Parents, which will be especially important for first generation parents.

• Research into improving the quality of the residential experience for students by increasing customer service-focused efforts when onboarding incoming students

2018 – 2019 Honor Roll of Donors

THANK YOU

With Heartfelt Gratitude for Your SupportThe Christmas season has concluded and a new decade has begun. In the spirit of gratitude, and on behalf of Walsh University, I extend our heartfelt appreciation to all of our alumni, friends, families and community members who continue to offer their support of the Walsh experience.

We have so much to look forward to in 2020. We will officially install our seventh president, Tim Collins, with a formal inauguration ceremony August 26 and begin celebrations to mark Walsh’s 60th Anniversary. We initiated and accomplished several campus projects over the past year including the Bill Rambo Admissions Center, technology upgrades and expanded safety enhancements. Before they were even completed, we were already in the design process of several new campus beautification projects, fully funded, including the new Founders Plaza, Alumni Patio and the new Global Learning Center Patio, all through the support of our generous donors.

We began the academic year with the successful President’s Challenge, which raised more than $32,000 for an immediate impact on the Walsh mission. We are in the midst of preparing for our April 7 Day of Giving campaign as we continue the momentum through the blessing of support from our Walsh Board of Directors, faculty, staff, students, alumni, friends, and our hometown community.

We conclude the Bicentennial celebrations of our founding order, the Brothers of Christian Instruction, reminded that the inspiration for our hard work continues with preparing our students to be leaders in service to others. With every new initiative, our focus is to ensure that all students, regardless of financial conditions, have access to the high quality, values-based education at Walsh University.

One of the best ways we can assist students on their journey is through scholarship support and a direct gift to the Walsh Fund. With 98 percent of our students relying on some form of financial aid, we will continue to focus our efforts on ensuring that a Walsh University education is attainable.

We must also continue to pursue new endeavors to live our Catholic faith, enhance the Walsh University student experience, develop relevant academic programming and continue to ensure the legacy of our founding order.

On behalf of Walsh University, Cav Nation wishes you all a joyful and prosperous 2020. Swords Up!

Eric Belden Vice President, Advancement

“The generosity of our donors help students like myself exit college with a high-quality education but without the stress that comes with large amounts of student loan debt. Receiving this scholarship has allowed me to focus on the things that are important in my life—my education, my family and friends, research that benefits others, and contributing in the community.”

Walsh University is guided by a Board of Directors made up of dedicated individuals with unique leadership experience from various backgrounds in education, business, politics and service organizations. Walsh’s Board Members represent a diverse mix that includes the Brothers of Christian Instruction, the Bishop of the Diocese of Youngstown, business leaders, financial experts, religious clergy, judges, attorneys, community partners, education professionals and alumni. As a unified Board, members combine their expertise to review the activities of the University while carefully balancing future development with the Brothers’ founding vision.

As committed custodians of Walsh’s mission, it is the Board’s responsibility to oversee the strategic direction of the University, define administrative roles, monitor committees and approve annual accounts and budgets. But most importantly, it is the Board’s duty to preserve and promote Walsh’s Catholic Heritage and founding traditions that have made our University the choice of more than 22,000 students for nearly 60 years.

commonly known as “Johnny Hole in One” by his friends. He had an infectious laugh that could brighten up any room.

’12Russell "Rusty" Haas, 32, of Canal Fulton passed away with his loving wife and family by his side on Sunday, November 10, 2019. He was always surrounded by family and covered in love—teaching him lessons he would one day bring into his own family. His smile rarely faltered, whether letting his mom take him out for her favorite chicken, watching football with his dad, or playing video games with his brothers, he brought joy to all he encountered. Rusty left behind his beloved wife Megan and son Lewis. He enjoyed nothing more than spending time teaching his son the same love of family, faith, and football that had been instilled in him at birth.
