    Ghost Writer

You are a student in Professor Erbs accounting class at Montcalm University. On your way home from theWolfe Memorial Library where you have been working long and hard on a term paper due this week, yousee one of your classmates, Scott, leaving "A+ Research Resource" , a research and thesis preparationstore. You are aware that Scott is not a very good student who spends a lot of time at the campus pub andvery little time in the library.

The term paper in question is worth 40% of the final mark in Professor Erbs course. After handing backthe graded papers, Professor Erb singles out Scott for the outstanding job he did on his paper and the A+grade it received. You received a B+ and are feeling a little bit unhappy about this situation.

    What should you do?

Before we go to that , lets discuss about the ghostwriting practice itself. Is it unethical or not? Thereare two perspectives:

First, some people belive that ghostwriting is akin to plagiarism. Many people who useghostwritten material do p ass someone elses concepts and ideas off as their own. They do so byeither claiming authorship or by giving the impression that the words and ideas are their own. Well, there is an ethical issue here.

Second, others know that if youre fully aware that youll receive no credit for your thoughts, ideas, and writings and still agree to sell those three things to someone else who will pass off thework as their own, there isnt any ethical issue.

In this case, Scott buys the paper from a research and thesis preparation store, so both parties arefully aware to this. Its all about business and what Scott did isnt unethical. But, when we talk aboutghost-writing papers for students, we talk about cheating and if Scott really did it so our answer willbe otherwise. Scott can be charged with academic fraud for his action.

Back to the case, if i were Scotts classmate, i would do these things:

First, i talk to Scott and ask him whether he did his paper trully by himself or not. I tell him thatusing ghost-writer service is a kind of cheating and it violates student code of ethics. Scotts reactionwill either admit or deny. If he admits it, i ask him to be honest to the Professor. If he denies it orhe doesnt confess to the Professor, i will go to the next move.

Next, I talk to the Professor and suggest him held oral examinations on the Scotts paper. If Scott isunfamiliar with the content of an essay that he has submitted, then he can be subjected withacademic fraud.

The last, i promise to work harder than before so i will get an A in the next term.

First, sebagai teman yang beretika saya akan menaknyakan

    1. Melapor ke professor erb ttg scott dan Meminta professor erb utk mengadakan oralexaminations on papers jadi bs ketahuan mana papers contekan mana yg bikin sndiri dannilainya lbh fair

    2. Ngomong ke scott apakah dia benar-benar mengerjakan tugasnya sendiri (tapi paling scottgak bakal ngaku kalo dia plagiat), kalo scott ngaku : nasihatin scott bahwa plagiat itu gakbaik (prett) dan menyuruh scott utk mengaku ke professor. Kalo scott gak ngaku: lakukanno.1/2. Dan berjanji utk berusaha lebih keras lagi spy next term dapet A.

    The slacker

You are in Professor Fenellas accounting class at Montcalm University. You are part of a group, assignedby Professor Fenella, consisting of David, Jenny, and Jan. In this particular course, there is a lot of groupwork and a substantial portion of the grade is based on this group work.

You have never worked with Jan before and you find that she quite frequently has excuses for not being atgroup meetings. When asked to do parts of the group project, her work is inevitably not of a very highquality. David, Jenny and you have been working extra hard to pick up the slack caused by Jans shirkingand, as a consequence of your extra effort, the assignments that your group has been submitting havereceived consistently good grades in the range of A to A-.

You are aware of the fac t that Jans contribution has been small or none and yet Jan is benefitting fromthe grades you have obtained. What should you do?

A slacker is a person who habitually avoids work or lacks work ethic.

Since this is a group-work, every member must give the best contribution to the team. It is not fairfor everyone to receive the same grade if only three of four people carried the work unless everyoneagrees to that, of course. And becuse the grades have been published, all we could do are as follows:

First , let Jane know how her behavior impacts the work. Dont let her off the hook. Most s lackersgot that way because people kept letting them be slackers. Let Jane slide this time, but let her knowby the second time that if the issue persists in the next semester we will be forced to escalate it tothe Professor.

Second , we talk to Professor, not about Jane but about a new group contract for the next semester. We suggest the idea of using not only self-evaluation of students performance, but also peer-evaluation of the group performance. So, Slackers like Jane would not get the same grade as theother members.

Third , If in the next term Jane keeps doing the same, we take it to the Professor and make thiscase professionally, with documentation and a clear discussion on what will happen next to Jane.

    1. Since this is a group task, every group member should give them contribution. If there isanyone who doesnt work, d ia ga pantas mendapat nilai yang sama.

    2. Untuk penilaian lebih adil minta prof fene untuk membagi 2 penilaian, kontribusi individu, danhasil kerja kelompok.

    Should cheater propsper ?

You are a student in Professor Nixons class at Montcalm University. On a recent mid-term exam, younoticed that three of your classmates were sharing answers during the exam (ie. cheating). ProfessorNixon was not there to supervise but had delegated that responsibility to a graduate student whosupervised the exam. The graduate student spent most of his time sitting at the front of the exam readingthe Financial Post .

How would you resolve the dilemma?

Academic dishonesty is not a victimless crime. Let's face it, students are in competition with each

other. Higher grades mean a better chance at scholarships, or placement in special programs andprofessional faculties. Someone who is cheating on any kind of academic exercise is giving him orherself an unfair academic advantage and is cheating everyone else in the class.

Some students might be completely intolerant of others cheating, some might not care one way orthe other. So what should i do if i see it happening but the instructor doesn't? How will it change therelationship with the person i suspect of cheating? This is what called the ethical dillema.

    Heres what i would do:

First, i will never call the supervisor's attention to cheating as it is happening so that he or she canaddress it, because it's too risky for me. Thus, i will let them continue their cheating activity until thetest is over.

Second, i talk to the exam's supervisor. It is part of his or her job to monitor the class. Whensupervisors are missing something, they usually appreciate the heads-up. If the supervisor doesn'twant to get involved, i will contact the Professor and tell him what happen at the test.

    2.
