OfficialEstablishmentoftheYEFLSTCinWFEO–Geneva2011The World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) Executive BoardMeetinginParis,France,(March16-17,2009),culminatedintheacceptanceoftheCommittee for Capacity Building (CCB) proposal to establish a Young Engineers/FutureLeaders(YE/FL)TaskGroup.At the WFEO Energy Congress in Kuwait, 2009 (“Alternative Energy ApplicationOption or necessity?”), the CCB encouraged the WFEO member countries toorganizetheiryoungengineersforparticipationatthefirstYEFLcouncilmeetingattheWEC2010heldinBuenosAires,Argentina.Young Engineers / Future Leaders (YE/FL) officially approved as one of the tenstanding technical committee of the WFEO in Geneva at the conference of 2011World Engineers Convention and WFEO General Assembly where the youngengineers, students and council members gathered as official members from theengineeringassociationsofnationalmembercountries.

YEFLSTCatthe7thUNESCOYouthForumin2011The YEFL STC made a first external representation at the 7thUNESCOYouthForumheldinParisinOctober2011.TheForumwasattendedbyYoungEngineers fromall over theworld representingthe UNESCOmember countries. This forum gave Young Engineersthe opportunity and platform to showcase the youth power invariousdimensions.Theforum’smainthemewas‘HowYouthdrivechanges’ and the sub themes were ‘Citizens in action: youth in

political and public life’, ‘Countering youth exclusion and violence’ and finally‘Breakingthroughemploymentbarriers.’

YEFLSTCProgramattheWFEOConference–Slovenia2012YEFLCommitteeProgramatthe2012WorldEngineersForuminSloveniaincluded:

• Networking Event – the idea of the event was to provide a relaxedenvironment for Young Engineers to engage with other YEs around theworld, share learnings on the nascent YE links to the organizationalstructures in the national engineering bodies, expand networkingopportunitieswithintheYEglobalcommunityandchallengepracticabilityofgarneredcross-regionalexperienceswithmoreseniorengineers.

• Technical Event – this was directly linked to the conference theme of‘Sustainable Construction’. The sub-themes discussed included projectmanagement,ethicsandYEexperiencesworkingwithforeigncountries.

• Technical Trip – an opportunity for the international YE’s group toexperiencethetechnicalsightseeingtourtoSlovenia’sgrandinfrastructural

landmarks, traditional industries,facilitiesetc.

• YEGeneralforum–anopportunityforYEstodiscussthelocal,nationaland

regionalYEFLissuesandwayforward.

YEFLYouthConventioninKuwait-2013The first Youth Convention held by the World Federation of EngineeringOrganizations,YoungEngineers/FutureLeaders(YE/FL)STCtookplace inKuwaitfrom 10 to 12 February 2013 under the patronage of His Highness the Amir ofKuwait.

• There were three days of technical sessions covering a variety of topicsrelevant to young engineers, from how to start your own business, tohumanitarianworkinthedevelopingworld.

• TheconventionheldinKuwaitmarkedthefirsttimethattheYE/FLhadheldan independent function during WFEO sanctioned events. It was a largeundertakingandagreatsuccessforthisyoungcommittee.Thethreethemesof theconvention included: Youth,EngineeringandTechnology,andGlobalInternationalRelations.

• ThissuccessfuleventwasgenerouslysponsoredunderthepatronageofHis

Highness, the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al- Sabah. The speaker whorepresented the Amir of Kuwait mentioned that this conference was animportant building block in the youth movement, bringing togetherengineersfromover105globalengineeringorganizationswhoarepatriots,devoted to their home countries, and their fellow citizens throughengineeringworkstobenefithumanity.

The YEFL STC also had the honor of inviting the President Elect of WFEO Mr.MarwanAbdelhamidandthepresenceofMs.GretchenKalonji,DirectorofNaturalSciences at the United Nations Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organization(UNESCO),whospokeduringtheopeningceremonyandpledgedhersupporttotheYE/FL. Ms Kalonji also committed to strengthening youth relationships globally,using UNESCO’s network in whatever way may be beneficial to the YE/FL. Inaddition,Ms.Kalonji committed tohaveUNESCOand theYE/FLworkinghand-in-hand to realise the goals of this YEFL STC global movement of young engineersworking together worldwide. Ms. Kalonji congratulated the Kuwaiti YoungEngineersfortheirachievements.Shestated‘TheKuwaitSocietyofEngineerswerethemostwellorganizedandeffectiveYEgroupshehadseen’

YEFLSTCattheWFEOConferenceinSingapore2013TheYEFLcommitteeactivitiesattheWorldEngineeringSummitin2013,Singapore,includedthreewell-attendedevents,withrecordparticipationand input fromYEsandattendees:

• YEDayatOneNorthwhereseveralyoungengineersparticipated in theYEdayatFusionopolis.ThiseventwasorganizedbytheYoungEngineersattheInstitution of Engineers Singapore and aimed to promote engineering as acourseofstudy.

• YEFLDayatIESHeadquarterswheretwospeakersfromtheUSpresentedon3 topics – Water Sustainability in the Alberta Oil Sands, personal andprofessionaldevelopment,includingnetworkingandtheModernEngineer.

• YEFL informal discussion regarding Future of YE/FL Projects and possibleissues to undertake for the next half STC tenure and beyond. Therewas ahigh level of YE and attendees’ participation in the brainstorming sessionsfornewwayofworking,whatYEscantakefromtheseexperiences,andhowtocreatesimilarexperiencesforYEsunabletophysicallyattendconferences,but still desiring to participate. Emphasis was placed on creating a strongvirtualpresencesothattheobstacleoflackoffundingasadeterrentforYEparticipationcouldbelargelymitigated.

• TheYEFLSTCparticipationatthe8thUNESCOYouthForumattheUNESCO,HeadquartersinParisinOctober2013wasanopportunitytoshowcasetheWFEOandYE/FL journeyatabooth intheYouthForum.Ms. IrinaBokova,UNESCO’s Director- General, Mr. Abdulaziz Othman Altwaijri and otherinspirationalyoungleadershelpedtosetthesceneandsharetheirvisiontohavequantifiableyouthcontributiontoresolvingpressingglobalissues.

• TheYouthforumhadplenarydebateson‘Youthandsocialinclusion–Civic

management, dialogue and skills development’ in line with UNESCOoperationalstrategyonYouth2014–2021.

• The YEFL team also attended technical sessions and workshops that took

placeforconsecutivethreedays.

YEFLSTCProgramatthe2014WFEOConference-NigeriaThe YEFL Committee events at the 2014 World Engineers Conference onSustainable Infrastructure inNigeria gathered350YEsand stakeholders from theacademia, industryandgovernment inAfricatodiscusstheroleofYEs inbuildingsustainable infrastructures in Africa and the support required by YEs to meetdemandsof this vital role. Development–Provisioning- SimulationusingaconstructedDrone.- InfrastructureDesignforFoodProduction- Consumption and Poverty Eradication – Construction of a mechanically

propelled tricycle liquid sprayer and Semo, Wheat and Amala (SWA)processingmachine

- Scenario Infrastructure Planning for Sustainable Livelihood – SystemAnalysisAuto-runCellPhone–GeorgeOuma(UniversityofNairobi)

The post-WECSI networks enabled a continued platform for young Engineers toshowcase ingenuity, support for the project groups to develop and maintain theconnections for developing people-sized technologies, provision of coaching andmentorshiptoYEsthroughnationalandinternationalpartnerships

ThefirstStakeholderCollaborationforGlobalIntegrationofYouthinIndustrywasheldinKuwaitinMarch2015forthreedays.ThisforumcameaboutastheresultoftheoutcomesfromthefirstYoungEngineers/FutureLeadersConferenceinKuwaitinFebruary2013andmarked thesecond independentYE/FLstandingcommittee

Theworkshopwasdividedintothreethemes:- whatcompaniesneedfromfreshgraduatesandyoungengineers;- whatuniversitiesknowaboutindustryexpectations;and- howthirdpartiesaretryingtofillthegapbetweenuniversitylifeandwork

lifebypreparingyoungengineerstoworkinprivatesectors.A day each was dedicated to focusing on the major stakeholders’ concerns:Academia, Industry (Public & Private Sector), Governments to identify the gapsbetween YEs formal education, available resources and opportunities and YEs’capabilitytofunctioninindustry.

YEFLSTCatthe9thUNESCOYouthForumTheYEFLSTC representationat the9thUNESCOYouthForum inParis inOctober2015 contributed to UNESCO focus on Young GlobalcitizensforaSustainablePlanet.Thesessionwasopenedby the UNESCO Director-General, and YEFL STC had adedicated booth at the event to highlight YEscontributiontorealizingthegoalofhavingasustainableplanet.Theprogramwasfollowedbyanopenareafreetimeina

casual exhibition room where participants had theopportunity to engage and network with UNESCOpartners at the Forum via the dedicated Marketplacestands.

YEFLSTCatthe2015WFEOConferenceinJapanTheYEFLSTCofficialmeetinggathered28YEsfromWFEOmembercountrieswhoprovidedupdatesonYEactivitiesatthenational levelsfollowedbydiscussionsonthe STCs events in 2015 including the outcomes of the international strategicplanning forum – Stakeholder Collaboration for Global Integration of youth inIndustryforMiddleEastregion,whichtookplaceinKuwaitinMarch2015,andYESTCs’participationatthe9thUNESCOYouthforumheldinParis,October2015.

The2ndYEFLSTCInternationalStrategicforumfortheAsiaPacificregionwasalsoheld at theWorld Engineers Conference and Convention in Japan. The YEFL STCtookadvantageof the extensive stakeholders’ participation at the conference as agreatopportunitytogatherstakeholdersinvolvedinYEs’developmentintheAsia-Pacificregion.LessonsfromtheoutcomesfromtheMiddleEastengagementswerecaptured in theplanningof theAsiapacificsessionswith thegoalof targeting thepeculiarconcerns,situationsandchallengesfacedbyyoungengineersintheregionastheytransitionintoindustries.Theforumdiscussedthreekeythemes:

• InnovationofYouthinIndustry–thiswasrelatedtoInnovationofYouthinIndustry’with a focus on the reality of 18-year oldCEOs, childmobile appdevelopers,andcollegiatehumanitariansinvariousindustriesandsectors.

• University Preparation of the Young Engineer for Employment – thesecond theme focused on the Universities’ perspectives on availability ofsabbaticals in industrypositions, internshipsandtrainingsforstudentsandgraduate engineers in industries, and YEs’ preparedness to contribute toindustryasquicklyastheyarerecruitedintoindustryroles.Discussionsalsonarroweddowntotheperceivedareasforimprovement.

• CompanyObjectiveswhenHiringNewTalent – thethirdthemefocused

ondiscussingproblemscompanies(privateandpublic) facewhenhiringorworkingwithyoungengineers. Also,howcompaniespresentthemselvestoattract YEs in own organizations with opportunities for growth, morefreedom to express creativity in the delivery of assigned responsibilities.Most companieswere concerned that fresh YE graduates had very limitedunderstanding of the workings of professional life and need an earlyexposuretothistoenablebetterpreparedness.

UNESCOWorkshoponScienceandKnowledgeforAdvancingthe2030SDGsintheArabRegion–Egypt,2016TheYEFLSTCChair,Eng.ZainabGarashi,wasinvitedtotheUNESCO’sBureauforSciencefortheArabStates,toattendaworkshoponScienceandKnowledgeforAdvancingthe2030SDGsintheArabRegion”,(25-26May2016)inCairo,Egypt.

ThemainobjectiveoftheworkshopwastoformulateajointvisionandoutlinesofamasterplanfortheeffectiveactivationanddeploymentofscienceandknowledgeforachievingtheSDGsintheArabregion.Morespecifically,theworkshopaimedtoidentifymajorissues,challengesandopportunitiesaswellasthekeyresponsibilitiesofstakeholdersincludingthepotentialroleofUNESCO’sRegionalBureauforScienceintheArabStates(UCO)inadvancingtheScience/KnowledgeandSDGagendaintheArabregion.Theworkshopgathered30selectedregionalexpertsfrom10ArabCountries.

YEFLSTCattheWFEOConferenceinPeru-2016During the WFEO Conference of World Engineering Conference on Disaster RiskReduction (WECDRR).The YEFL STC official meeting held with 29 YE nationaldelegates in attendance to discuss progress in own national YEs groups andactivities held within the year including the UNESCO Roundtable for the ArabRegion in Egypt and how YEs can better contribute to the 17 sustainableDevelopmentGoalsoftheUnitedNationfor2030.

The planned robust conversations with stakeholders as part of the internationalstrategic planning forum – ‘Stakeholder Collaboration for Global Integration ofyouth in Industry in the South American region’ could not hold as attendees andstakeholdersfromindustry,universityprofessorandstudentscouldonlycontributeviaquestionnairespreparedforthatpurpose.Theinputsfromstakeholdersviathequestionnaireswerefurtherreviewedwithspecificstakeholderstoaligndivergentpositions and ensure a shared understanding with uniformity of purpose beforeengagementoutcomeswerepublished.

ECOSOCYouthForum-2017TheYEFL STCwas approachedbyUNMajorGroup for Children&Youth throughDonovanGuttieres–FocalpointforScience.ThePolicyInterfacePlatformfromtheUS and one of our YEFLmemberwere requested to co-organize the side event –“Eradicating poverty and promoting prosperity in a changing world" during theECOSCOYouthforuminJanuary2017.

UNESCONGOForuminSaudiArabia-2017The YEFL STC Chair attended the 8th UNESCO NGO forum “Youth Social Impact”whichtookplaceinRiyadh,SaudiArabiafrom3-4May2017.ItwasorganizedinpartnershipwithMISKFoundation inKSA.Therewere several sessionsheldwithdistinguishedpanelists.Theeventprovidedaverygoodforumandopportunitytohaveopendiscussionsandconnectionsforcollaborations.

UNESCOPlenarySession"KnowledgeandScienceforDevelopmentwithinLASArabSDweek–Eygpt2017The YEFL STC Chair, Engr Zainab Garachi, was invited to the UNESCO regionalBureau for science and technology in the Arab states as a panelist in the plenarysessionon the “transferand localizationofknowledgeand technology in theArabregionwhichwasheldfrom14-18May2017inCairo.ThiswasheldaspartoftheArabweekforSustainabledevelopmentwitha focusongarneringYEs’positionattheevent.

Eng. Zainab presented a 7 minutes presentation which included an introductionabout WFEO with a focus on the Arab countries as national members. She alsoshared the WFEO organizational structure, showcasing the 10 WFEO standingcommittees to give a general idea onWFFEO activities and coverage of differentperspectiveof engineering andour contribution towards it. Thepresentationalsohighlighted the goals and progress on the YEFL regional strategic forum withparticipantsshowingmoreinteresttoparticipateandcontributethedeliveringthestrategicforumobjectives.

TheYEFLSTCattheWFEOConferenceinRome2017The YEFL Committee activities at the World Engineering Forum in Rome 2017comprised the YEFL STC official meeting with 24 YE national delegates andmembers.The4thInternationalStrategicforumalsoheldwithafocusonEuropeasa followup from the Stakeholder Collaboration for Global Integration of Youth inIndustryheldinKuwaitin2015forMiddleEastRegion,Asia-PacificRegioninJapanin 2015 and South America in Peru 2016. Following the structure and format ofpreviousforums,theEuropeforumprovidedaplatformforstakeholders(academia,industry, governments etc.) involved in young engineers’ development to discussregion-specific issues, with a focus on the EU/UK and the intention of clearlyarticulating a global position towards bridging the gap between young engineers’

ingenuity and industry/societal challenges. The theme for the forumwas alignedwith the conference themeof ‘Safeguardinghumankind’sheritage’ and the roleofYEsinachievingthatgoal.Apositionpapersummarizing the issues identifiedacrossall four regional forumsheldfrom2015to2017waspreparedaswellastheproposedsolutionswhichwasto be presented to the WFEO and socialized with the wider global community(UNESCO,UN,WorldEnergyCounciletc.).

TheWFEOYoungEngineersProjectCompetition-2018 In June 2018, the YEFL STC prepared a call for papers to invite Young engineersaroundtheworldtowritearticlestargetingtherealizationoftheUNSDGs.Thetoparticleswere selected and sponsored to attend the YE event at theWFEO annualconferenceinLondoninOctober2018.150projectsubmissionswerereceivedfrom30countriesaroundtheworld,11percentofthesewerefromwomen.TheProjectPanelists and assessors included the WFEO President, Dr Marlene Kanga, thePresidentElect,Prof.GongkeandtheYEFLChair,Eng.ZainabGarachi.Theglobalfinalists (top 10 submissions) were invited and the winner sponsored by theKuwaiti Society of Engineers to present their projects, ideas and perspectives inLondonatthe2018annualWFEOconference.

TheYEFLSTCattheWFEOConferenceinLondon2018The YEFL STC activities at the 2018 Global Engineering Congress (GEC2018) inLondon included the YEFL STC official meeting with 31 national delegates andmemberstodiscussnationalandregionalactivitiesheldwithintheyear.TheYEFLprojectcompetition,theprogresswiththeInternationalStrategicForum,thereviewof UNESCO Engineering Report-II sub-section on Arab states and sub-section onYouthandEngineering.DedicatedsessionsonHumanitarianEngineeringand&UNSDGswereheldaspartof theGEC2018. Fourprojectpresentationsweremadebydistinguished speakerswho had applied humanitarian efforts and engineering in selfless service tohumanitywhilethesecondsessionwasthepresentationoftheprojectsoftheYoungengineers’ finalists to progress the UN Sustainable Development Goals via theinternationalcompetitionhostedbyWFEO.

Thisyear,theYEFLSTC’sfocusisonsharpeningtheoutcomesoftheInternationalStrategicforumsalreadycoveredandcoverthegreyareas(andregions)yettobefullyincorporatedintotheYEposition.TheoutcomesfromtheforumintheMiddleEastregion,AsiaPacificregionandEuroperegionwererobustduetothetimededicatedtodiscussingtheconcernsofallstakeholdershowevertheSouthAmericanregionwasonlycoveredbyaquestionnaireandfollow-upalignmentdiscussionstoaligndivergentpositionandensureasharedunderstandingoftheregionalpositionofallstakeholders.TheYEFLPeruRepresentativeexpandedonthisoutcomebyorganizingamorerobustconversationamongawiderspectrumofstakeholderstoarriveatamorerepresentativeSouthAmericanpositioncapturingtheconcernsanddialogueheldthisyear.Ashortreportonthe2019forumaspresentedbytheYEFLPeruRepresentativeisbelow:

2019ForumThemes(Piura,Peru)YoungEngineers'difficultiesinthefirstyearsofpracticeoftheprofessionWhiletheCIPextendsthecredentialthatallowYoungEngineerstolegallypracticethe engineering profession within Peru, at the same time, the industry isadditionally asking for at least 3 to 5 years of previous experience and provenleadership and project management skills to apply for a job. The Academia maycontribute to bridge this gap by introducing pre-grade courses in leadership andprojectmanagement skills,whichhavedemonstrated in the last years, that giveaplustothecandidateswhenapplyingtoanewjob,especially forthefirst job.TheCIP may also contribute by including among their services EmployabilityWorkshops for Young Engineers and coordinate with the industries the mainsubjectsandtopicsrequiredthatpotentialemployeesknow,andscheduletrainingsinthosetopics.Someuniversitiesofprecedenceareprioritizedwhenhiringyoungengineers.Tohold aProjectManagementCredential is valued in some industries,especially construction andmining, so YoungEngineers and engineering studentsareseekingforaCredentialsuchastheCertifiedAssociatedinProjectManagement(CAPM)inthelastyearofpre-gradestudies.Lowsalariesandshort-termcontractsforYoungEngineerswerealsopointedout,andsomeadditionalanddeeperstudiesshouldbeconductedregardingofferanddemandofengineeringprofessionalsintheSouthAmericaRegion.Finally,alltheUniversitiesshouldinstallofficesthathelpthestudents of engineering get an internship within the country and abroad to getfasterandearlierinvolvementwiththeindustry.Industries’ExpectationsfromYoungEngineersCommitment, accountability and values are expected in general as the mainqualifications when starting in new jobs. Innovation, flexibility, mobility, easyembracing of changes, continuous learning, generation of fresh ideas andcontinuous improvement are the main qualifications additionally expected fromYoung Engineers. Industries also expect that young engineers may have maintechnicalrolesindigitaltransformationprojects.TheyexpectthatYoungEngineerswouldadaptfasttotheirorganizationandstartdeliveringtheworksassignedunder

their responsibility from the firstmoment.Regarding this topic, itwasmentioned that industries should consider aperiodofadaptationoftheorderofthreemonthsbeforestartingaskingforconcreteresultsintheassignmentsgiven.Finally,wassuggestedthatindustriesshouldhaveaminimalpercentageofyoungprofessionals in theirstaffasmandatoryby lawtofostertheirintegrationtothelabormarket.

YoungEngineers’maincontributionstotheindustryYoungEngineersmaycontributeasbeing freshpeopleeager to learn,withvaluesandknowledgefromthelastlaunchedtechnologies,whichcouldhelptheindustriesmake faster and easier processeswithin the organization. Also, itwasmentionedthatwithinaproject,ifexperiencedengineerswouldletyoungengineersintegratetheir teams and assigned them significant responsibilities, the outcomes of theprojectwouldbebetter.ConclusionThese points are but a few of many listed in the questionnaire and from inputscollated for the South America region (Peru – Lima 2016) and in the forum forYoungEngineers(Peru–Piura2019).Weplantocarryonthesediscussionsfortheother regions of the world, and jointly identify the global issues and present apositionwithpotentialsolutionscoveringyoungengineers’regionalexperiences.At the end of the regional forums, we plan to issue a position paper which isexpectedtobeaworkingdocumentprovidingguidancetogovernmentsandpolicymakersandcontainingthestrategyforbridgingthegapbetweenyoungengineers’academic development and industry requirements. We aim to create metrics formonitoringtheseissuesandtrackchangeswhichmaybebroughtaboutasresultofourdiscussionsandalignedposition.
