7 TIPS TO SUCCEED IN YOUR FIRST QUARTER

Read and print your course guide It is important to carefully review your course guide. It is a key document for understanding course expectations and managing your time effectively. Plan ahead by identifying major assignments, reviewing their criteria, and marking their due dates on your calendar.

Create a weekly scheduleMake it a habit to log in to your class on Mondays to review your assignments and important announcements located on the course homepage. Each week, you will review a lecture presentation, complete a reading assignment, respond to one or more weekly class discussions, and some weeks, you will also have writing or project assignments due. Keeping a weekly schedule will help you balance your work, life, and school responsibilities.

Review and comply with the attendance policy and other regulationsYour class attendance will impact your grade. Each week, you will be required to submit an assignment, quiz, or respond to discussion questions within Blackboard to receive attendance credit.

University policies and regulations are there to set expectations and serve as behavioral guidelines for both students and faculty. Learn the rules early on and you will be better prepared to deal with any situations that may arise.

Set goals and determine your motivationGoals are a great way to determine what you must achieve each quarter and year to reach your objectives. Many JWMI students say their children are their motivation for going back to college. What is your motivation?

Sign up for academic advisingNew students are each assigned an academic advisor. Academic advising is a 20-30 minute phone conversation discussing the expectations and work load for courses, how to contact your professor(s), and academic policies. Please contact your Admissions Officer to schedule your advising appointment.

Seek help earlyIf you need additional help with your course, email or call your professor right away. Don’t let weeks go by and risk falling too far behind. Additional resources, such as tutoring, are also available to you.

Get involved My Communities is a virtual lounge where you can meet and network with other students, share ideas, discuss academic topics with students, build study groups, and share career opportunities. You can access My Communities from your Blackboard home page. In addition, join outside professional organizations to build your professional network.
