Shroud may bemedieval fake

ROME (NC) — The Vatican's scientific adviser onthe Shroud of T\irin said that although he had not seenresults of testing on pieces of the shroud, he believedthey would show the shroud was a medieval fake.

"The rumors and indiscretions in the press are toocoherent to be all false," the adviser, Luigi Gonella,told National Catholic News Service in a telephone in-terview Sept. 27. "I expect that when I get the results,they will show that the shroud is medieval. But I don'tknow the results, and I can't confirm that it ismedieval."

Amid secrecy surrounding testing of the Shroud ofTurin, several newspapers in Great Britain and theUnited States ran stories saying that scientists hadconcluded that the Shroud of Trin, the 14-foot strip oflinen believed by some to have wrapped the dead bodyof Christ, is a medieval fake.

But, by prior agreement, none of the scientists orchurch officials directly involved in the testingrevealed the results. They had signed a pact whichleaves that announcement to the cloth's caretaker,Cardinal Anastasio A. Ballestrero of Turin.

At the end of August, London newspapersreported that scientists at Oxford University as-signed to the testing had concluded the shroud wasproduced sometime in the 14th century — give ortake 100 years. They quoted a Cambridge Uni-versity professor unconnected to the currentresearch.

This month, the Sunday Times — another Lon-don newspaper — said all three laboratories in-volved in the carbon 14 testing had decided theywere dealing with a hoax from the Middle Ages. Itsaid the results would be announced in early Oc-tober. The laboratories are at the University ofArizona in Tucson, and Oxford and CambridgeUniversities in England.

Then the Los Angeles Times and the New YorkTimes quoted the Rev. Robert Dinegar, anAmerican Episcopal priest who had once parti-cipated in research on the shroud unrelated to thecurrent testing, as saying the London newspaperreports were probably accurate.

Individuals directly connected to the Vatican-sponsored tests called the newspaper reports "non-news" and a "fishing expedition."

Gonella told National Catholic News ServiceSept. 3 that tests on the Shroud will not solve abasic mystery — how did the image of a man,apparently crucified, get on the cloth?

If testing proves it is medieval, a question re-mains because the techniques to make such an im-age did not exist in the Middle Ages, he said.Previous tests showed the shroud was not apainting.

Interfaith coalitionintervenes in abortion case

EDMONTON, Alberta (RNS) — An unusual in-terfaith coalition will present arguments favoringlegal protection of the unborn before the SupremeCourt of Canada. The coalition, intervening in ananti-abortion case, represents not only Christiangroups which have traditionally opposed abortion,but Muslim, Jewish and Hindu groups as well. Thecoalition will argue before the court in October thatunborn human beings deserve full legal recognitionunder the Canadian Charter of Rights.

Czechoslovakian activistsentenced to mental hospital

PRAGUE, Czechoslovakia (NC) — The authorof a petition for religious freedom signed by morethan half a million Czechoslovakians has beensentenced to a mental hospital, dissidents reported.They said Augustin Navratil, a 59-year-old railwaylineman who wrote the petition, was judged mental-ly incompetent by a court in the Bohemian town ofKromeriz. Navratil appealed the ruling and was sentimmediately back to work.

Nicaragua halts humanitarianaid for children

CRS, with a $3 millionmedical program for Nicaraguan children, is respon-sible for one of the largest private assistance pro-grams in Nicaragua. "It is regrettable that theNicaraguan government has seen fit to suspendthese strictly humanitarian programs," said CRS Ex-ecutive Director Lawrence A. Pezzullo. "They aredesigned to meet the medical needs of innocent vic-tims of armed conflict in that country."

Irish agency a factor inslowing of abortion rate?

DUBLIN, Ireland (NQ — An Irish bishops'agency that began as a telephone referral servicenow offers a wide variety of help to women withunwanted pregnancies. The agency, Cura — Latinfor care — offers free accommodation and medicalcare during pregnancy and arranges temporaryfoster care and short-term nursing care. Some Irishwomen seeking abortions, which are constitutionallybanned in Ireland, travel to Britain, where the pro-cedure is legal through the 28th week of pregnancy.In 1987, the number of Irish women traveling toBritain for abortions decreased by 8 percent from1986. "Cura and other similar organizations mightwell have played an important part in the decrease,"said Auxiliary Bishop Dermot O'Mahony of Dublin,Cura's coordinator.

Because of this, the priestlyministry "is exercised by men," thepope said.

He also said men and women haveequal dignity in society and that alater document would deal morespecifically with women's role.

The'pope's letter was dated Aug. 15and was scheduled for release by theVaqtican in early October in severallanguages, including English. How-ever, copies of the text began leakingto news media more than a weekbefore the release date.

"If Christ, in instituting theEucharist, united it in such an explicitway to the priestly service of theApostles, it is valid to think that inthis way he wished to express the rela-tionship between men and women,between that which is 'feminine' andthat which is 'masculine,' as desiredby God in the creation and in theRedemption," the pope said.

The pope called the apostolic lettera meditation on women and promisedanother document which will discussthe pastoral implications of the roleof women in church and society.

The future document will be a post-synod exhortation based on therecommendations submitted to thepope by the 1987 Synod of Bishops onthe laity, the pope said in the letter.

At the same time, the apostolic let-ter, supported equal dignity for menand women in marriage and society.

Marriage is a "reciprocal submis-sion" by both spouses, said the pope.

The church opposes in society "allthose situations in which women areat a disadvantage or discriminatedagainst by the fact of being women,"Pope John Paul said.

But the pope also warned against a"masculinization" of women in theeffort to achieve equality.

Women "cannot attempt to appro-priate masculine characteristics whichgo against their very feminine ori-ginality," the pope said.

"The personal riches of femininityare certainly no less than the riches ofmasulinity; they are only different,"he added.

The pope made a special plea forsociety to help single mothers, preg-nant women who have been aban-doned by their mates and womenpressured to have abortions.

The pope said the church hasalways recognized "feminine genius"and encourages women as mothersand consecrated religious to contrib-ute to social and church development.But it always has recognized thatconsecrated virginity is a superiorstate of life, the pope said.

The document is titled "MulierisDignitatem," Latin for "The Dignityof Women" and is subtitled "On theDignity and Vocation of Women onthe Occasion of the Marian Year."

The Marian year ended Aug. 15,the feast of the Assumption of Mary.

Most of the 125-page Spanish textis a biblical reflection on the dignityand role of women as it has evolvedthrough the Old and New Testaments.

The church's prohibition of womenpriests has often been restated by thepope as a teaching of Christ whichcannot be changed.

The position has sparked criticismfrom some women's groups withinthe church and provoked calls fortheological re-examination of theposition.

One of the arguments has been thatChrist chose men, not because he op-

posed women priests, but because ofthe cultural and social conditions ofthe times in which women weredenied leadership positions.

This argument was clearly rejectedby the pope.

Haitians cautiously hopefulFrom Voice staff and

NC News Service reportsHaitians in South Florida have

reacted cautiously to the news that anew military man has taken over theleadership of their homeland.

The bloodless coup that brought Lt.Gen. Prosper Avril to power was view-ed by many as an "improvement" overthe increasingly paranoid, violence-prone rule of Gen. Henri Hamphy.

Avril's government has made vaguepromises about returning to democracyand apparently enjoys strong supportfrom the young, more progressive,non-commissioned officers in Haiti'smilitary.

Avril "has been behind every singlepresident," said Father AntoineAdrien, head of the Holy GhostFathers in Haiti. "This is an improve-ment in the sense that this man hasmore political sense than Namphy."

But Father Thomas Wenski, directorof the Haitian Catholic Center inMiami, said "basically what they're do-ing is changing the foot that is in theboot that is on the neck of the Haitianpeople. The real solution is to get theboot off the neck of the Haitian peo-ple."

Haiti's bishops, meanwhile, took nostand on Avril himself, but issued astatement this week calling for thedisarming of all members of a fearedsecret police corps and for an economicand social recovery plan for their coun-try, one of the poorest in thehemisphere.

After two weeks of violence, thebishops called for the "disarming of allMacoutes and excluding from publicadministration all those who, in oneway or another, have actively con-tributed to consolidating andperpetuating the dictatorial system dur-ing the last 30 years."

They added that the country "cannotbe satisfied with disarming Macoutes."

"The necessary judicial structuresmust be put into place because, toavoid violence, people must be giventhe chance to present their appeals forjustice," the bishops said.

The Tontons Macoute were a secretpolice force that terrorized Haitiansduring the terms of former PresidentsFrancois Duvalier and Jean-ClaudeDuvalier, his son. The Duvaliers ruledHaiti from 1957-1986.

After the 1986 ouster of Jean-ClaudeDuvalier, the Tontons Macoute re-

mained in Haiti. They are widelybelieved to be responsible for the Sept.11 attack on St. John Bosco Church inPort-au-Prince. At least 11 people werekilled and 70 injured in the incident.

The bishops also said a nationalrecovery plan should be put into effect.

"Because the country's economy isat its lowest level, the state of the roadsare lamentable," they said. "Health isthreatened. The country is deterioratingat an extraordinary speed."

They called on international orga-nizations to increase aid to the country.The same day, Foreign Minister SergeElie Charles called for economic aidand "moral support" from the UnitedStates.

Also this week, demonstrators mar-ched from Port-au-Prince to thesuburb of Petionville to show supportfor Salesian Father Jean-BertrandAristide, an outspoken critic of thegovernment who escaped from themassacre at St. John Bosco Church.The crowd, which began as about 200,swelled to several thousand by the timethey reached the rectory where 35-year-old Father Aristide has been staying.

WASHINGTON (NC) — Changing the propertytax structure could make more affordable housingavailable to the poor, according to Jesuit FatherWilliam J. Byron, president of The Catholic Uni-versity of America.

At a press conference in Washington, Father Byronand two housing experts called on local governmentsto lower tax rates on dwellings and raise tax rates onland, to replace what they called the currently high"penalty taxes" on new construction.

The proposal would require land speculators to paya larger share of local revenue, the three said. Theysaid it would not require more federal dollars butwould actually reduce local taxes for most taxpayers.

Father Byron, an economist, called it "a scandalthat homelessness.is growing while boarded-up apart-ments stand idle" and said these "modest taxchanges" could make more cheap housing available.

"We are penalizing the wrong people," the peoplewho are making property improvements, but "we arenot penalizing the people who are letting the buildingsdecay," Father Byron said.

He also encouraged universities and think tanks tostudy other ways to make housing available to thepoor and to help the homeless.

Walter Rybeck, director of the Center for PublicDialogue, a Washington-area think tank, called landthe "missing link in housing policy. Upside-down pro-perty taxes foster speculation and slums. They punishwith higher taxes those who build, improve and main-,tain rental properties."

Rybeck said the tax system punishes good land-lords. "Every time they build new rental units or makemajor improvements to existing buildings — a newroof, air conditioning, rec room, whatever -*• theassessor raises the valuation so the owner's taxes gou p . " _

WASHINGTON (NC) — William J. Bennett'stenure as U.S. secretary of education gave new hopeto Catholic schools and kept education issues in thespotlight, according to Catholic educators. The out-1

spoken Bennett, a Catholic who championed tuitiontax credits and vouchers for non-public schoolstudents, left his education post Sept. 20 after nearlyfour years in office. At a Sept. 19 dinner fo r Ben-nett, Cardinal Bernard F. Law of Boston thankedhim "for giving new hope to the most significantnon-public school system in the nation'."'

New York cardinal starsin weekly TV show

NEW YORK (NC) — Cardinal John J. O'Con-nor of New York is featured in a new weekly half-hour television program which premiered Sept. 24.Called "Face to Face with John Cardinal O'Con-'nor," it originates from the cardinal's study in hisresidence behind St. Patrick's Cathedral. Religious groups opposedeath penalty for minors

NEW YORK (RNS) — Several national religiousorganizations have joined in a brief to the U.S.Supreme Court urging it to reverse two state courtdecisions imposing the death penalty on minors onthe ground that such punishment "is cruelty for thesake of cruelty." The brief concerns the high court'sreview of High v. Kemp, in which the petitioner wasone month away from his 18th birthday at the timeof his offenses, and Wilkins v. Missouri, in whichthe death penalty was imposed on a defendant whowas 16 years old at the time of the crime and had along history of mental problems and drug addiction."Nothing is gained and all is lost by extinguishingthe life of a youth who commits a crime."

Judge rescinds order forcingwoman to use birth control

PHOENIX, Ariz. (NC) — An Arizona judge hasreversed her controversial order that an 18-year-oldwoman convicted of abandoning her children re-main on birth control for the rest of her childbear-ing years. Catholic officials in Phoenix and theAmerican Civil Liberties Union had joined incriticizing the order handed down last June as aviolation of the woman's constitutional right toreligious freedom. The woman, Debra Ann Forster,who is Catholic and pregnant with her fourth child,was sentenced by Superior Court Judge LindsayEllis Budzyn to lifetime probation and the use ofbirth control after she pleaded guilty to two countsof attempted felony child abuse.

Bishop: Yonkers issue couldhurt Church among blacks

NEW YORK (NC) — Auxiliary Bishop EmersonJ. Moore of New York said that the future of theCatholic Church among blacks could be hurt by thecontroversy over public housing in the New Yorksuburb of Yonkers. He said he had found "a lot ofanger" in the black community of Yonkers aboutthe role of the Catholic Church there. Most of thewhites demonstrating against the court order toplace public housing in the predominantly whiteareas, he said, are Catholic. "That has the possibili-ty of negative impact in the black community."Bishop Moore, who is black, serves the New YorkArchdiocese as vicar for social development.

BOSTON (NC) — The Massachusetts bishopshave urged Catholics and other citizens to vote ac-cording to a vision demanding respect for "everyhuman life from the moment of conception tonatural death." They also pleaded for people to"vote with thoughtful conviction."

Pro-lifers pleased: Congressretains Hyde amendment

WASHINGTON (NC) — Church and pro-lifeleaders welcomed action by Congress to affirm theHyde amendment banning most Medicaid fundingof abortions. The House of Representatives recentlyvoted to uphold the ban, which forbids federalMedicaid funding of abortion except in a case wherethe woman's life is endangered. The Senate hadvoted earlier to begin permitting use of Medicaidfunds for abortion in cases of rape or incest whenthe crime is promptly reported. But after theHouse's insistence on the Hyde amendment, theSenate voted to kill its proposal for rape and incestexceptions.

California bill restrictslawsuits filed against churches

(RNS) — The California legislature has passed abill that sets stringent standards of proof beforecourt claims for punitive or exemplary damagesagainst a religious group can be filed. The measurewas supported by a broad coalition of religiousorganizations, including the California CatholicConference, California Council of Churches,Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints andChurch of Scientology. It was seen as a response tocases like the lawsuit filed aginst Grace CommunityChurch in Sun Valley by Walter and Maria Nally,whose son, Kenneth, committed suicide after hereceived pastoral counseling at the church in 1979.

Bishops support higherminimum wage

WASHINGTON (NC) — Auxiliary BishopJoseph M. Sullivan of Brooklyn has urged Congressto enact a higher minimum wage to better providefor "dignity and economic reality." The bishop ischairman of the U.S. Catholic Conference DomesticPolicy Committee. The USCC has pushed repeated-ly for passage of a bill to increase the minimumwage, currently $3.35 per hour. The Senate bill sup-ported by the USCC would increase the wage to$4.55 per hour by the end of 1991. The last increasein the minimum wage came in 1981.

Survey: Churches fail to helppeople at critical times

MINNEAPOLIS (RNS) — Religious institutionoften fail their members at the most critical times,according to a six-year national study titled "FaithDevelopment in the Adult Life Cycle." The study,which concludes that failure of institutions is par-ticularly noticeable during mid-life re-examination ofvalues, combines poll data from the Galluporganization and in-depth interviews of more than1,000 persons nationwide. According to the study,many people do not seek out churches for help be-cause they believe they are not places where doubtsabout faith can be entertained.

Will court roll back legal abortion?WASHINGTON (NC) — Supreme

Court Justice Harry A. Blackmun rais-ed court-watchers' eyebrows and pro-lifers' hopes recently when he predictedthe Supreme Court will soon reverse its1973 abortion ruling.

Blackmun, author of the controver-sial Roe vs. Wade decision that legaliz-ed abortion nationwide, told law

, students that "the next question is, 'willRoe vs. Wade go down the drain?' Ithink there's a very distinct possibilitythat it will — this term. You can countthe votes."

But the possibility of overturningRoe vs. Wade rests on two major fac-tors:

First, the Supreme Court has toagree to consider abortion again.

As of mid-September, when thecourt was still in recess after completingits 1987-1988 term, it had included noabortion cases on its 1988-89 agenda.Furthermore, unlike the 1973 Roe case,ar Portion issue the court does takeup ^obably is not going to involve adirect, yes-or-no vote on abortion it-self.

Second, reversing Roe vs. Wadedepends on getting Supreme Courtjustices — historically independent in-dividuals, no matter what thepresidents appointing them assume —to vote against a 15-year-old precedentlegalizing abortion.

If the high court does take upanother abortion case, it might well beone involving the rights of parentswhen their teen-age daughters wantabortions. Another possibility might bea case questioning the rights of a manto prevent his girlfriend or spouse fromaborting his unborn child.

Two years later, it upheld a Missourilaw that required parental consent for ateen-age girl's abortion but also allowedthe girl to skip parental approval andobtain consent from a court instead.

Since then, different state laws onparental involvement have continued toraise different questions, and federalappeals court judges in August issuedcontradictory decisions on parental in-volvement statutes.

In a decision that pleased pro-lifers,the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appealsin St. Louis upheld a Minnesota lawthat demands a pregnant girl notifyboth parents and wait 48 hours beforehaving an abortion. The 8th circuit's7-3 vote overturned earlier rulings by afederal district court and an appealscourt panel, which both struck downthe law.

create problems and perhaps lead toviolence in families where the parentsare embittered or one is abusive.

The full appeals court majority,however, determined that "consideringthe statute as a whole and as applied toall pregnant minors, the two-parentrequirement does not unconstitu-tionally burden the minor's abortionright."

When Ohio tried to enact a parentalinvolvement law, it also ran afoul ofthe courts.

A district court, and then a three-judge panel from the 6th U.S. CircuitCourt of Appeals, ruled against Ohio'slaw demanding that doctors informparents before performing abortions onteen-agers.

In its Aug. 12 ruling, the three-judgeappellate panel agreed with the districtcourt, which had ruled that Ohio's lawwas unconstitutionally vague, infringedupon a woman's constitutionally pro-tected rights, placed an unfair burdenon access to abortion and violated con-fidentiality.

Father's rightsMeanwhile, fathers' rights cases have

arisen in Indiana and Minnesota re-cently, and pro-lifers want the SupremeCourt to take up one of the Indianacases.

In that dispute, a man tried to pre-vent his estranged wife from abortingtheir child. The father obtained a lowerstate court injunction temporarily for-bidding the abortion. But the IndianaSupreme Court subsequently dissolvedthe injunction and said the man couldnot stop the abortion, which thewoman then obtained.

In 1976, the Supreme Court ruledthat husbands cannot veto wives' abor-tion decisions. But, abortion opponentscontend, other aspects of the extent towhich the father can be involved in thequestion remain unclear.

While the Indiana court proceedingswere under way, Chief Justice WilliamH. Rehnquist, one of the SupremeCourt justices considered most amen-able to pro-life causes, refused to blockthe Indiana Supreme Court's actionallowing the abortion go ahead.

Others justices considered most like-ly to vote to overturn Roe vs. Wade areByron R. White, and PresidentReagan's three appointees — SandraDay O'Connor, Antonin Scalia andAnthony M. Kennedy.

As Blackmun noted, the fate of Roevs. Wade may hinge on Kennedy'sviews on "stare decisis," the legal doc-trine that courts do not overturn older,well-established rulings.

Kennedy joined the court in early1988 after it had split 4-4 and issued no

In his address, Father Fichterchallenged the view that — with theelection of a Catholic president in 1960,the move of Catholics onto Wall Streetand into the suburbs, their departurefrom the labor movement and theirchange of party affiliation — theCatholic Church was no longer ethnic.

Immigrants today, he said, still con-stitute more than a fifth of theAmerican Catholic population, includ-ing 16 percent Hispanics, 3 percentblacks and 3 percent Asians. Ethnicparishes still exist and are growing onthe West Coast, he said.

Father Fichter said poverty amongAmerican Catholics was not limited toimmigrants, but included many others"who have not made it." By conserva-tive estimates, at least 4 millionCatholics were among the 32 millionAmericans below the poverty line in1987, he said.

"The permanent proletariat of peo-ple on welfare include our •> fellowCatholics," he said.

Father Fichter questioned suburbanparish programs designed to promote"fellowship" among small groups ofpeople of similar social class.

Seventy of 167 dioceses replying to a survey by the U.S. BishopsCommittee on the Liturgy said they have one or more parishes thatare administered by someone other than a priest.

WASHINGTON (NC) — Seventy of167 U.S. dioceses responding to asurvey have parishes and missions ad-ministered by someone other than apriest, according to the U.S. bishops'Committee on the Liturgy.

The 70 dioceses with priestlessparishes and missions reported a totalof 193 faith communities headed byeither a woman Religious, a deacon, alay person or a religious brother, said areport on the survey published in thecommittee's newsletter.

Fifty-one of the 167 dioceses saidthat within the past year there wereparishes or missions in their dioceseswhere a Sunday worship service hadbeen held in the absence of a priest.

Thirty-one of the 70 dioceses withpriestless parishes reported that withinthe past year Sunday services had beenconducted without a priest. In those 31dioceses, priestless Sundays werescheduled at least once a month in 29parishes.

A total of 49 dioceses said thatwithin the past year Sunday serviceswithout a priest were conducted in.parishes or missions which have a resi-dent priest.

Ninety-one of the 116 dioceses repor-

ting no priestless Sundays said theyforesee a day when priestless Sundayswould be necessary. Fifty-six diocesessaid it would probably be within fiveyears.

The survey also found:• The majority of non-ordained

parish administrators are womenReligious. They account for 125 of the201 administrators or administrativeteam members.

• In the 51 dioceses where priestlessSunday services were held, 169 deaconswere authorized to lead the prayer; 139women Religious; 96 lay women; 94 laymen; and 11 religious brothers.

• 137 dioceses reported weekdayCommunion services in the absence ofa priest.

• 17 dioceses have established theirown guidelines for the; training ofprayer leaders at services' without apriest. Nine dioceses have commission-ing services for the prayer leaders.

Fetal tissue researchBETHESDA, Md. (NC) —

Recognizing the "moral relevance" indecisions to use human fetal tissue inresearch, a federal panel in a tentativevote said Sept. 16 the practice was ac-ceptable but called it "imperative"that safeguards be developed torespect "the principled viewpoints ofall affected parties."

The 21-member panel is chargedwith studying the scientific, ethicaland legal questions surrounding theuses of tissue obtained from abortedfetuses.

In public testimony before thepanels the U.S. bishops, the Knightsof Columbus and other abortion foescondemned the practice of using fetaltissue from deliberate abortions andsaid the abortion and fetal tissuequestions were morally linked andcould not be discussed independentlyof each other.

Dr. Walters told NC News thatthough there was a range of viewsamong panel members on abortion, amajority "seemed to have unified" onthe view "that use of this tissue is im-portant and does promise importantmedical benefits that can't be securedin any other way."

However, he said the panel was"determined" to put restrictions inplace "to insulate the decision aboutabortion from the use of tissue."

Msgr. Raul del Valle, the first Cubanpriest in modern limes to serve as Chan-cellor of the Archdiocese of New York,died last week at the age of 62 after aseven-year battle with cancer.

"Let it simply be said that the Churchhas lost a great priest, the Archdiocese ofNew York has lost an ardent pastor ofsouls, I have lost a man I grew to love, andwe have all gained an advocate inheaven," said Cardinal John O'Connor.

The cardinal was the principal cele-brant of the Mass of Christian Burialcelebrated Sept. 23 for Msgr. del Valle atSt. Patrick's Cathedral. Burial was in St.Raymond's Cemetery in the Bronx.

Born in Guanajay, Cuba, Msgr. delValle studied theology in Havana andcanon law at the Gregorian University inRome. He was ordained in 1949 andserved as secretary to Havana's CardinalManuel Arteaga Betancourt from 1954 to1961, when he was forced to leave hishomeland.

'\at he thought would be just a tempo-ral^ absence turned into permanent exile,however, and that same year he beganministering in the Archdiocese of NewYork. He served as pastor, hospital chap-

lain, and judge of the Archdiocesan Mar-riage Tribunal before being appointedchancellor in 1985.

In this position, he followed in the foot-steps of Father Felix Varela, a 19th-cen-tury Cuban priest who was exiled in NewYork because he advocated Cuban inde-pendence from Spain.

Father Varela, a philosopher and theo-logian, spent 27 years in New York work-ing with Irish immigrants and reached theposition of vicar general in the diocese.He then retired to St. Augustine, Fla.,where he died in 1853. His remains werereturned to Cuba.

For many years, Msgr. del Valle hadbeen collecting data on the life of FatherVarela in order to promote his cause forcanonization. Last April, he accompaniedCardinal O'Connor to Cuba for Churchceremonies marking the bicentennial ofFather Varela's birth. It was the only timehe returned to his homeland in 27 years ofexile.

Upon learning of Msgr. del Valle'sdeath, Miami Auxiliary Bishop AgustinRoman, who had been his friend for 30years, called him "an exemplary man,"and praised his priestly example and"courage in carrying the cross of cancerwhile continuing his work as chancellor."

He said the U.S. bishops did notsee how the practice of using fetaltissue "can be institutionalizedwithout threatening a morally unac-ceptable collaboration with the abor-tion industry."

Other speakers, representing ethicscenters, research facilities and ad-vocacy groups for victims of disease,approved of using the tissue butstrongly urged stringent federal guide-lines to protect the practice fromcommercialization and its subjectsfrom exploitation.

The White House has proposedbanning the use of fetal tissue infederally financed experiments andtreatments, but Health and HumanServices Secretary Otis R. Bowen an-nounced he would not take a positionon the proposal until he received thepanel's findings. Those conclusionsare not expected until December.

Among those at tending theceremony was Sister Boniface Dyrda,72, an Ohio nun whose cure from adebilitating disease 27 years ago wasdeclared by the pope last December tobe due to Father Serra's intervention.

Other U.S. pilgrims attending theSept. 25 Mass included a 5-year-oldboy with AIDS and a 30-year-oldDominican nun with cancer, both of

whom are hoping for miracles throughFather Serra's intercession.

Father Serra evangelized Mexico andCalifornia, establishing a string of mis-sions along the continent's West Coast.He is buried in the Diocese ofMonterey, Calif.

In his homily the pope called FatherSerra "a shining example of Christianvirtue and the missionary spirit."

His mission to the California Indiansstemmed from a desire to "further theirauthentic human development," hesaid.

He sowed the seeds of Christian faithamid the momentous changes wroughtby the arrival of European settlers tothe New World," the pope said.

His mission work meant he also hadto "admonish the powerful" so thatthey would not "abuse and exploit thepoor and the weak," he added.

The cause of Blessed Serra became asubject of controversy in recent years.Critics, including American Indianspokesmen, charged him with brutaliz-ing Indians and suppressing Indianculture.

In 1986, a special investigation by theMonterey Diocese concluded suchcharges were false. One historian citedby the report said the priest often clash-ed with military and civil officials in hisdefense of Indian rights.

Father Pro was a member of the Na-tional League for the Defense ofReligious Liberty, which opposed theMexican government's crackdown onthe church during the 1920s.

While some opponents of thegovernment took up arms, the Vaticandetermined that the priest was not oneof them and that he was a martyr "kill-ed in hatred of the faith."

Apartheid must endVATICAN CITY (NC) — Pope John Paul II said South Africa's apartheid

system is in "clear conflict" with Christianity and must end for the good of allAfrican peoples.

The pope made the remarks at a general audience Sept. 21, two days after hereturned from a 10-day trip to southern Africa. He recalled the countries he visited— Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland and Mozambique — without men-tioning his seven-hour detour in South Africa Sept. 14, after bad weather forcedhis plane to land in Johannesburg.

The pope said it was his impression that the entire region faces a "particularproblem."

"It is the problem of racial segregation, apartheid, which remains in clear con-flict with human dignity, both from the point of view of the common moral cons-cience and that of the Christian faith," he said.

"Overcoming this kind of discrimination is an integral part of the program ofliberation and self-determination among African peoples," he said.

The pope repeated his call for peace in Mozambique, which has been wrackedby civil war for several years, and Angola, where negotiations are now under wayto end a conflict that includes South Africa. He also expressed hope that theAngola accord would bring independence to Namibia, which is currently ruled bySouth Africa.

He encouraged the bishops of the countries he visited to continue their row ofreconciliation, trying to bring the various factions of their societies together.

The pope also said he was pleased with the liturgies he saw in southern Africa,particularly the native songs and dances woven into them. He thanked civil andchurch authorities for making the visit possible and for coping with its ar-rangements.

John Paul II, in an audience talk on thecrucifixion, emphasized the church'steaching that the killing of Christ can-not be blamed on all Jews of that timeor of the present.

"Historical responsibility forChrist's crucifixion rests with thosementioned in the Gospel," the popesaid Sept. 28. "One cannot enlarge thisaccusation beyond the circle of peoplewho were really responsible."

"We must always keep in mind theteaching of the Second Vatican Coun-cil, which declared that 'even thoughthe Jewish authorities and those whofollowed their lead had pressed for the

death of Christ, what was committedduring his passion cannot be imputedindiscriminately to all Jews at that timeor to Jews today,' " the pope said.

He was quoting from "NostraeAetate," the council's landmark docu-ment on relations with Jews and othernon-Christians. The council's teachingrejected the once-common view thatthe Jews as a people were responsiblefor Jesus' death, and that they were apeople repudiated by God.

The pope has previously underlinedthe council teaching, notably during hishistoric visit to a Rome synagogue in1986.

'Be Moses', lead others to justice,2,000 religious educators told

Next Sunday, if a passionate parishioner clutches youby the throat and shakes you up and down, he or she is justfollowing instructions.

Instructions against apathy, that is, given by EileenFord at Catechetical Day '88, the annual reunion of closeto 2,000 Archdiocesan religion teachers. Each year,Catechetical day enables religious instructors to updatetheir knowledge on current issues related to Christianeducation.

In addition to the workshops, the event is known for itsoutstanding exhibits by nationwide publishers such asBenziger, Tabor, and the Daughters of St. Paul.

Held last Saturday at the Sheraton Bal Harbour, Cat-echetical Day '88 focused almost entirely on socialjustice—as the duty of every Christian and an awarenessvery religious educator must pass on to students.Ford, president of William Sadlier Publishing Com-

pany and former superintendent of schools for the NewYork Archdiocese, began the day by saying that apatheticChristians are the biggest obstacles to the pursuit of socialjustice.

She suggested that the message of Luke 4:18-19 beemblazoned on every church door: "The Spirit of theLord is upon me,because he has anointed me to bring gladtidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty tocaptives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let theoppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable tothe Lord."

Although injustice is not frequently connected toAmerica, the richest country in the world, Ford sharedhaunting tales of a pregnant 15 year-old huddled in NewYork's subway with a sign reading "Help Me," and of a14 year-old murderer with no respect for life since "we'llall be dead soon anyway."

Another survey asked 5th, 8th, and 11th grade studentsto choose from among 20 things —including fame,fortune, and fantasies—that which they wanted most outof life. Ninety percent said they wanted "a happy familylife."

will, on their 18th birthday, have the privilege of livingwith both parents, Ford noted.

"We have stolen childhood away from our children andtaken away hope," she said, but concerned Christianpeople can still make a difference.

"Each of us is a Moses and Mosetta—we many not liveto see the promised land of justice to the disenfranchisedor of equal treatment. But you are stronger than thestrongest babbler. I know because I've been babblingacross the country for 40 years."

One group who have made a commitment to socialjustice are the Jesuits, Ford noted. High school diplomasare withheld from students not meeting their obligationsto serve the poor and unfortunate of this country.

S he recounted the story of murdered Archbishop OscarRomero of El Salvador, who once said he believed he wasCatholic because he had gone to Catholic school, hadbecome more Catholic when ordained a priest, and wasmost Catholic when named bishop.

"But I was converted to Jesus Christ when I becameBishop of El Salvador," he said, because only then did hewalk with his people and give them a chance to share theirpain with him.

"Let your kids and your parish dump on you," urgedFord. "We must take on one another's pain. Rent out anold granny and call her to share her pain. By the power of

As part of the Catechetical Day, threevery committed teachers were awardedspecial peace and justice awards by theirfellow catechists:

• John Winters, who in 1972 startedworking with people who consideredthemselves "too handicapped to be of anyuse." He is now executive director ofG.O.A.L. (Get Out and Live), a programhelping Miami's handicapped home-bound.

• Angie Fernandez, who has led hersixth grade religion class at St. Brendan'sSchoolin Miami to write letters opposingoil drilling in Florida and supporting strictgun control. They once made a personalappearance at Miami City Hall so thatfunds would be allocated for a project toend world hunger. Fernandez also wasnamed 1988 Peace Educator of the Year atthe elementary school level by a locally-based peace and justice foundation.

• Teresita Vazquez of Msgr. EdwardPace High School in Opa-Locka, whowon the same award at the high schoollevel. She directs the Social Justice Clubat Pace and moderates the Respect LifeGroup. Together they raised money for aschool in Haiti and last January partici-pated in the annual Walk for Life inWashington, D.C.

After Ford's keynote speech, concur-rent workshops in English and Spanishwere held in the morning and afternoon,spanning topics like R.C.I. A. (the Rite ofChristian Initiation of Adults), creativeteaching tools for catechists, methods forinfusing social values to young people,Christian morality in the 20th century,today's problems and tomorrow'sChurch, and peace and justice in the ele-mentary classroom and family.

A most moving workshop was titled,"Let the Children Come Unto Me," andgiven by Sister Lucia Ceccotti, S.S.J.C.,director of the Marian Center, the Arch-diocesan school for the developmentallyhandicapped and mentally retarded.

S tudents with mental handicaps had ledthe convention in an Our Father at theopening of Catechetical Day. They andtheir parents were present at the work-shop, where older children recited the 10Commandments and answered questionsabout their faith. The younger children,most of them preparing for First Com-munion, were also drilled on some cate-chism basics.

said Sister Lucia, who in 1963 started theMarian Center — "the best school in theworld"—at the request of the late MiamiArchbishop Coleman Carroll.

She reminded the catechists that peoplewere always brought to Jesus, and it is theduty of parents and friends to make theirparishes aware of the needs of the handi-capped.

She recalled how, during preparationsfor the papal visit last year, some parishessent her no names of handicapped peopleneeding assistance to take part in the his-toric Mass at Tamiami Park. "It seemsCatholics have no handicapped," she saidin her Italian-accented English.

and parish buildings with ramps and spe-cial restrooms for those with physicalhandicaps. Later, those with develop-mental handicaps should be recruited tosing in choirs, become altar servers, orread from the lecterns.

During one of the most inspirationalmoments of her workshop, one of SisterLucia's students, Angie, sang "Tomor-row" from the play Annie.

"We must use them as we use otherpeople," Sister Lucia said, noting also thatif a child whines and misbehaves inchurch we accept it as part of childhood,but if a Down's Syndrome child actsaccordingly, we become annoyed.

"Prejudice starts with the simple per-ception of difference," said the Bishops ofthe United States in their 1978 pastoral on

handicapped people. "The parish is thedoor to participation for handicappedindividuals, and it is the responsibility ofthe pastor and lay teachers to make surethat this door is always open."

One example of that is St. AugustineChurch and Catholic Student Center inCoral Gables, which in 1987 began teach-ing religious education to the develop-mentally handicapped. Religion teacherBetty Rodriguez also works with specialneeds children at the Debbie Schoolhoused in the University of Miami'sMailman Center.

"When a mother told me, 'don't youthink they have souls, too?' I wasmoved," said Rodriguez. "I start withvery simple things: music, art, and ges-tures. You must keep in mind that you areteaching them at their developmental age,not their chronological age."

This year, three developmentallyhandicapped children from St. Augustinewill make their First Communion. "Theyneed contact with God's love for the samereason any child does," said Lya Lascola,director of religious education (DRE) atthe parish.

In the book, "The Clowns of God,"author Morris West imagines God'swords when he created the mentally re-tarded: "Youneedasign.Whatbetteronecould I give than to make this little onewhole and new? I could do it; but I willnot. I am the Lord and not a magician. Igave this little child a gift I denied to all ofyou: eternal innocence."

Treat them as they deserve to be treated,said Sister Lucia, because one day theywill open the gates of Heaven for you.

friendly and compassionate, but how canthey if their priests don't reflect this im-age?

Sister Kathleen Kelly asked that rhe-torical question during one of the keynotetalks at Convocation '88, a week-longgathering of all the priests in the Archdio-cese of Miami.

In a talk aimed at the clergy but relevantfor the laity as well, she stressed that notonly priests, but all Christians, have aduty to live up to the words of the Book ofGenesis: "Man and woman he createdthem. In his own image he created them."

To reflect the image of God, she said,"ans to "commit ourselves, out of who^ are, to become lovers, to risk whatever

it means to love."Sister Kelly, a veteran of priestly and

Religious formation who holds a doctor-ate in counseling, asked if by our actionswe mirror a cold, rigid, insecure God, or awarm, loving, caring God?

Or do we mirror a schizophrenic God— such as a priest who is pious andwonderful at the altar yet cold and unwel-coming in the yard?

In her talk on the "human aspects ofcollaboration," Sister Kelly stressed thattoday more than ever in the Church "weare called to work together." Because thisinvolves human relationships, it makesgreat demands on people and providesgreat opportunities for growth.

Relationships"Relationships call us to hard and pain-

ful work," she said. "It is only in relation-ships that I am forced to confront thenarcissistic tendencies within me. It isonly in relationships that I am forced tolook at the self-protectcdness about me...Only in relationships I must deal with mysexuality and my emotional feelings."

She stressed that celibacy does notexcuse anyone from confronting the sin-fulness within. "Celibacy is not an invita-tion to avoidance, but a call to love."

Sister Kelly shared with the priests heryears of experience in priestly and reli-gious formation and the insights gainedthrough her work at the House of Affirma-tion, a national Catholic center that helpspriests and religious in crisis.

She admitted that being a priest is adifficult thing today: "You are in the eyeof the hurricane, in times of tremendoustransition and change, all of which meansloss."

In her opinion, priests are dealing withloss of status, of role and function, withfew clues as to what the future will bring.

Loss, anxiety"Loss leads to anxiety, and when anxi-

v.iy happens there is a need to exercisecontrol," she explained. Today more thanever, "we are called to work together, butthe anxiety level in individuals makes thisdifficult."

Making matters more difficult are themany hats a priest must wear : pastor,teacher, counselor, administrator, andeven janitor.

Each of those roles demands adjust-ments in relationships "and you end uptotally exhausted," she told them.

Who am I? is the question that maycome up for the priest. Can he be priest,pastor, teacher, counselor all in one per-son?

Sister Kelly told the priests that only"out of the acceptance and awareness ofwho you are comes the ability for collabo-ration."

And this is specially important forpriests, given their prominent role inpeople's lives.

Sister Kelly talked about each of theseaspects and stressed that every individualhas a way of perceiving reality whichaffects his interaction with others.

Reality 'filters'"We filter acceptance of reality and

until we understand we have a filter wecannot change our behavior," she said.

She mentioned three areas that canblock the view of reality: family historyand ethnic background; perception aboutpriesthood and ministry; perception ofwomen and sexuality.

"We have learned to relate through theway mother and father related," she said.But adulthood is the time to re-learn andask: Is there anything I need to do tobecome better?

She especially stressed the importanceof recognizing one's own history, if itincludes experiences of child abuse, alco-holism or childhood distortions.

These may result in behavior that es-capes relationships and takes refuge inexcessive work, alcohol, or any otheraddiction.

"Whatever your ethnic background itimpacts tremendously on how you per-ceive," she told the priests. "How you feelabout sexuality, women and priesthood isfiltered by your ethnic background."

S ister Kelly said that "an insecure iden-tity is bound to overwork," as a legitimateway to avoid relationships. "These taketime... but then people end up in their 60sand 70s alone."

In her opinion, "the best insurance forold age are rclationships,because when allelse fails you have those friends."

Sister Kelly stressed the importance ofknowing one's own basic needs: foracceptance, success, approval, intimacy.Otherwise, individuals who are not awareof them may try to meet them inappropri-ately in ministerial relationships.

She also clarified that intimacy is thedeepest and most threatening need for allhuman beings. S he defined it not in physi-cal but psychological terms as the "needto know and to be known at the deepestpossible level."

Repeating her theme of mirroring God,she said that "if the priest is asked to beanything today it is to be a real presence,a real human being who is willing to bewarm and loving and caring and willing tobe risking and involved in life."

And this, she said, demands that a priestbe able to "forgive himself and risk lov-ing, because the way we relate to eachother is the way we relate to God."

New priest:To serveas bestI can'

A week-long celebration of priest-hood ended, fittingly enough Sept. 16,with the ordination of a new priest forthe Archdiocese of Miami.

Steven T. O'Hala, a Connecticutyankce transplanted to the fertile mis-sion soil of South Florida, took thesolemn oath to be a shepherd to God'speople surrounded by his .family,friends, and nearly all the priests of theArchdiocese.

The ceremony at St. Mary Cathedralculminated Convocation '88, only thesecond time in five years that theArchdiocese's nearly 300 priests havecome together for five days of camara-derie, relaxation, prayer, and learning.

This year, the priests heard from anumber of experts on such subjects asself-esteem, time management, faithdevelopment and sexuality.

A highlight of the meeting was theopening session with Father FrankMcNulty, the New Jersey priest andretreat director who had spoken to PopeJohn Paul II last year on behalf of all theU.S. priests. Father McNulty outlined afive-part formula for priestly health andhappiness. (See Voice, Sept. 16).

Another keynote speaker was SisterKathleen Kelly, who discussed howpriests (and lay people), through theirpersonal attitudes and relationship'swith others, convey either the image ofa warm, caring God or that of a cold,rigid one. (See accompanying story.)

ceremony, Archbishop Edward Mc-Carthy referred to the Convocation as "agenuine time of grace... A time of gainingnew enthusiasm for our ministry."

Father O'Hala's ordination is "a mar-velous conclusion... for that week wespent together," he added, and an occa-sion for "recommitting ourselves to ourprayers that many, many more young menwill follow in Steve's footsteps."

"It's just such a beautiful, beautifuloccasion," said Lois O'Hala of Hartford,Conn., the new priest's mother, who shedmany tears during the ceremony and gaveher son a long, emotional embrace duringthe Sign of Peace.

"It feels pretty good," said FatherO'Hala afterwards, in between giving outfirst blessings to friends, family and fel-low priests.

The new priest, 27, is a native of Con-necticut who entered St. John VianneyCollege Seminary in Miami right afterhigh school.

He has spent the last four years study-ing theology in Rome, and will spend onemore year there completing a degree inmoral theology. In between, he spent oneyear doing pastoral work at Good Shep-herd parish in South Dade.

The fourth of five children (two boys

and three girls), Father O'Hala wasborn on Christmas Day.

"That maybe should have been asign," said his mother, of his futurevocation, for even as a little boy hewanted to be a priest. "I would take himto church and he would come homeand 'say Mass,'" she remembers.

Father O'Hala doesn' t recall at whatage, exactly, he decided to be a priest,just "that interior sense that this is whatyou ought to be doing," and "greatpeace in following it through."

He chose to come and minister inSouth Florida instead of his nativeConnecticut, he says, because he felt"very much attracted to the sort ofmission atmosphere that there is downhere. You know that there's going to bea lot to do up the road."

His commitment to the area has ex-tended to learning Spanish and travel-ing twice to Haiti and once to theDominican Republic with a local laymissionary group, Amor en Accion.On one of the trips to Haiti he caughtmalaria and had to spend a couple ofweeks hospitalized in intensive care.

But he remains stalwart in hiscommitment. "I want to just be able toserve as best as I can," the new priestconcluded.

St. Gregory's: A+ for excellencePlantation School getsnational honor;students' academicachievement is key

The kids have only a faint grasp of what has happened.But this much they do know: they have a right to brag.

"Our school is one of the best in the world," says third-grader Elizabeth Benz.

"We have all the nice teachers," pipes in her classmate,Chantel Clouse.

Childish hyperbole aside, something truly great hashappened to St. Gregory School in Plantation. This year, itwas singled out by the U.S. Department of Education asone of the best elementary schools in the nation.

St. Gregory's was one of only 287 schools, public andprivate, honored with the 1988 National Excellence inEducation award. It was one of only 31 Catholic schools toreceive the award, and one of only two in Florida.

(The other Florida winner was also in the Archdiocese ofMiami, St. Patrick's on Miami Beach. See story, page 13).

According to its principal, Sister Mary Brendan, St.Gregory's won for one simple reason: academic excel-lence. As she puts it, "the record speaks for itself."

St. Gregory's 550 students consistently outperform theirpeers in standardized tests, particularly the Comprehen-sive Test of Basic Skills (CTBS), which all Florida sev-enth-graders must take. Last year, about one-third of St.Gregory's seventh-graders scored at the 97th percentile orhigher on the CTBS.

St. Gregory's also participates in Duke University'sTalent Identification Program, which selects academicallyoutstanding seventh-graders to take the SAT—a standard-ized college-entrance exam geared for juniors and seniorsin high school. Last year, two of the St. Gregory seventh-

- graders who took it went for state recognition — the mostof any Broward school.

Indeed, St. Gregory's academic marks were so high, thatthe judges who visited the school last May seemed "con-cerned that perhaps we put too much emphasis on achieve-ment," Sister Brendan recalls. They wereworried that theschoolchildren were being turned into neurotic over-achievers.

They found quite the opposite."Our kids are very happy kids, and they achieve because

they want to. They get pleasure out of that," Sister Brendansays.

Positive reinforcementThe secret is positive reinforcement. "We really moti-

vate our kids. Every teacher in this school is committed topositive reinforcement. We call it affirmation."

It's not a hit or miss thing, the principal stresses. In everyclass, from Kindergarten through eighth grade, every St.Gregory student receives plenty of verbal praise for workwell done. They also get lots of "happy grams" on theirpapers, frequent laudatory notes that go home to their par-ents, certificates of achievement, and prizes, such asstuffed animals, to take home for the weekend.

"They're learning that education... is important," SisterBrendan says. "They're learning that it brings a lot ofrewards and pleasure. I think the message our kids get isthey like their school; they know that they are liked.They're finding out it's neat to learn."

An enthusiastic proponent of teaching and learning or, asshe puts it, seeing "a kid's eyes light up" with curiosity,Sister Brendan describes herself as a Floridian who was"tired of hearing of the inadequacies of Southern educa-tion."

She came to St. Gregory's four years ago, her first job asprincipal. Previously, she had taught in elementary andsecondary schools in the Philadelphia area, and even spentseveral years as a teacher at St. Gregory's during the 70s.

When asked about St. Gregory's success, she says shewalked into a "tradition of excellence" dating way back,and all she had to do was build on it.

She credits the school's 22 teachers, mostly lay, whostay an averageof four to lOycarsand who, in many cases,have their own children enrolled. Once a year, both princi-pal and teachers come together to analyze the strengths andweaknesses of their curriculum and set a goal for them-selves.

This year, for example, they noticed that a certain gradelevel was not achieving as well as it could in math andreading. So they decided to hire a tutor to teach specialclasses after-school. learning deficit.Although St. Gregory's students are about 90 percent

'Anglo' — which, critics would say, helps keep standard-ized test scores high — the enrollment also includes sixpercent Hispanics and one percent each of Haitians,American blacks and Asiatics.

Sister Brendan says regardless of ethnic differences, thestatistics bear out her educational philosophy. "The longerthe children are in our school, the stronger they become [inbasic skills]... By the lime they leave our school, thatfoundation is so strong."

To the basic skills are added classes in computers forevery student, beginning in Kindergarten, and equallycompulsory classes in Spanish, beginning in third grade.

Yet the school doesn't have a cafeteria, making do withbag lunches in the parish hall and with the pizza andchicken parents bring in twice a week. "It's not the fancythings that count," Sister Brendan explains.

And she can't praise the parents enough. "I honestlybelieve that's one of the reasons we've been so successful,"she says.

Involved parentsIndeed, parental involvement, the 'imposible dream' of

many school administrators, is quite the norm at St.Gregory's, where parents are required to donate 25 hoursof service each year to the school. They might bakecookies, correct workbooks for teachers, supervise lunchperiods and field days, work on- fundraisers or judge theannual schoolwide speech contest.

"The great majority of our parents meet [that require-ment] easily," Sister Brendan says, even though in manycases both mothers and fathers work fulltime.

She instituted the policy four years ago to ensure "fair-ness to all families," since it seemed that only a few were

"doing everything." At the same time, she hoped to impressupon parents how vital they were to their children's educa-tion.

"You're not separate from the school as parents," SisterBrendan says. "You're part of it. A very important part."

"We honestly believe that it's good for our children tosee their parents actively involved in education. It's atremendous sense of pride for a child to know that hisparent has done something for the school," she adds."We've shown that where parents do get involved nicethings happen."

'Pat on the back'And that's probably the best thing about being recog-

nized nationally as an "excellent" school, Sister Brendannotes. "This is a pat on the back to parents. They needassurances. They need to know that the choices that theymade, the sacrifices that they made [tuition is $ 1,600 a yearfor one child], are worth it. This is concrete evidence."

But while the national spotlight may be focused momen-tarily on St. Gregory, Sister Brendan says, excellence is thehallmark it shares with all Catholic schools. "I think thereare many Catholic schools that can get this award. Wedefinitely have a great product."

Indeed, she stresses, she didn't spend two months gath-ering statistics and filling out stacks of reports and paper-work just so her school would shine. By winning, she hopesto prove a point about Catholic education, which has seenplenty of hard times — financially — in recent years.

"I honestly believe that Catholic education has to sellitself. We're too important not to receive the recognitionthat [we] deserve," Sister Brendan says. "We have made atremendous contribution to this country. And without theCatholic school system, this country would be at a severeloss."

If you believe in lucky charms, thenPrincipal Christine Lamadrid is S t. PatrickSchool's shamrock.

L^rqely due to her dynamic leadershipan ick-to-basics educational philoso-phy, the Miami Beach elementary has re-ceived the 1988 National Excellence inEducation award given out by the U.S.Department of Education.

It was an honor accorded to only 31Catholic elementary schools in the coun-try, and only two in Florida. (The otherFlorida winner was also an Archdiocesanschool, St. Gregory's in Plantation. Seestory on page 12).

But St. Patrick's glorious comebackdoesn't end there. In his final report as U.S.Secretary of Education, William Bennettsingled it out as one of only seven "exem-plary" elementary schools in the nation;schools whose curriculum he lauded asideal and which, he said, other schools,both public and private, should aspire toimitate.

On St. Patrick's campus, a huge bannerannounces tlie-Excellence award to driversand pedestrians, and posters in every corri-dor shine with pride at the distinction.Fourth-graders Angie Rodriguez andMelissa Medina boast that their gymclothes bear the coveted "School of Excel-lence" slogan.

"It really boosted moral," said La-madrid, now in her sixth year as St.Patrick's first lay principal. "I started get-ting calls from parents wanting to enrolltheir children in prc-kindcrgarten — for1992!"

Lamadrid graduated from St. Patrick'sin 1968 and went on to receive her educa-tion degree from Barry University. Herfirst teaching job was at St. Patrick's. Shewas later principal of St. Agnes School inKey Biscayne until St. Patrick's pastor,Father James Murphy, lured heraway. Andwhat a comeback!

"What's most unique about St.Patrick's," said Lamadrid, "is that we pro-vide quality education for many races,diverse nationalities, and varied economicbackgrounds."

Many nationalitiesly-two countries arc represented by

St. Patrick's 250-plus student body, whichis 80 percent Hispanic. But except forSpanish class and an occasional translationin pre-kindergarten, only English is spokenhere. Where national S.A.T. scores attrib-ute declining scores to increased enroll-ment of Hispanics, scores at St. Patrick'shave skyrocketed.

As former Secretary Bennett noted,since 1983 St. Patrick's scores on theMcGraw-Hill Comprehensive Test ofBasic Skills have climbed 23 points inreading and 38 points in math. Almost 70percent of graduates enroll in honorscourses during their freshman year in highschool.

This has also boosted enrollment. Un-fortunately, the school has only one classfor each grade and no room for expansion.

In his report, Secretary Bennett says that"children learn what adults choose to leachthem," and hecallsfora"renewed commit-ment to content." He says basics are what"American children have an insufficient

command of."Going back to basics has always been

Lamadrid's goal. "As I child I remembereda highly structured, high-quality emphasison academics," she explained.

Today at St. Patrick's, each day beginswith a 50-minute reading class in gradesKindergarten through eighth. Social Stud-ies are enhanced through a year-long Aca-demic Olympic contest. Math, English,and Spanish are also part of each grade'scurriculum.

"We don't overlook any subject area,"said Lamadrid. "Our curriculum is as goodor better than public schools'."

Basics also begin in pre-kindergarten,where St. Patrick's participates as a pilotschool for the Archdiocese.

"We teach them the foundations theywill need for pre-reading and pre-writing,"said Liana Hanson, pre-K teacher. "It's a'high scope' program that promotes crea-tivity and decision-making."

Four-year-old students decide each daywhich area they will work and play in.Later, they discuss their progress with theteacher.

In the future, S t. Patrick's plans to add anextended-day program for children ofworking parents.

Teachers are key"Except for the family, there is no insti-

tution so influential," wrote former Secre-

tary Bennett. "We ask elementary schoolsto shape our students' first and lasting ideasabout themselves, their country, itsculture,and the world... This mission dwarfs allothers in American education."

The shapers of those ideas are teachers.After updating texts and teaching materi-als, Lamadrid tackled the faculty.

"We have children more hours a daythan their parents," she noted. "That is whyquality of teachers is so important."

"I wanted a faculty committed to Catho-lic education and teaching the whole child—academics and character development,with an emphasis on Christian formation."

"Every child is educable, but you have tocreate a pleasant learning environmentwith dedicated teachers that want childrento learn," said Lamadrid.

She said the problem with finding quali-fied teachers stems from an attitude that theprofession is not professional at all.

"Teachers don't get the same respect asdoctors or lawyers. I am happy publicschools are finally paying teachers whatthey deserve," she said. She believes theArchdiocesan Education Foundation is apositive step to try and compete with publicschool salaries.

Faculty credentials and teaching loadswere also reviewed. Six years ago home-room teachers were teaching all subjects.Consequently, instructors for music, art,computers, and Spanish were hired.

The staff of 18 now includes 15 layteachers and three women Religious,making the teacher/student ratio one to 14.Turnover is low, and most of the currentstaff has been there between four and sixyears.

Small, cozyFounded in 1926, St. Patrick School

once included a high school, which wasclosed in 1972 due to declining enrollment.Now, apart from the architectural beauty ofthe 62-year-old school, with its sweepingarches encompassing a garden courtyardfilled with looming palms, there is a feelingof coziness, an at-home-ness unique tosmaller schools.

Class size is checked at 25 to 30 studentsper grade. "Although there is a waiting listfor the lower grades we try to never turnanyone away," said Lamadrid.

The school also provides scholarshipsand tuition assistance for those who can'tmeet the $2,000-$2,500 tuition.

The smallness of the classes is an assetboth to school spirit and Lamadrid's edu-cational goals.

"I bet you I could name every singleperson in this school," said eighth-graderPeter Lopez,

'Here I am. Lord'Sister Debbie Armstrong makes final profession as Sister of Mercy

"Lord, you have called me. Here I am."With those simple words, Sister Debbie

Armstrong, 31, committed her life to Godforever as a Sister of Mercy.

Before a church-full of family, friends,and fellow Religious last Saturday, shepromised to remain chaste, obedient andpoor, "to reach out with courage and love tothe needy," and to "serve the poor, sick anduneducated with tenderness and hope."

Her final profession came after nineyears of study and discernment — and alifetime of gentle nagging from the Lord.

"I had a feeling all of my life that I wascalled," she said after the ceremony, as herstudents, members of the Kindergartenclass of Immaculate Conception School inHialeah, flocked around her, hugging,kissing, hanging on and offering teddybears as presents.

It was only after graduating from highschool and working in the secular world fora year-and-a-half, however, that DebbieArmstrong decided "I would at least try"the religious life. She was 21.

A Connecticut native who moved toMelbourne, Fla., with her family at the ageof three, she had studied with the Sisters ofMercy at Ascension School there. Shewanted to join their order.

But the Ireland-based community didnot have a novitiate in the United States, sothey referred her to the Sisters of Mercy ofHialeah, also an Ireland-based commu-nity, who had opened a novitiate in Deer-field Beach.

The Sisters of Mercy are a worldwideorder founded by an Irish laywoman,Mother Catherine McAuley, who becameaReligious late in life. Although all Sistersof Mercy abide by the same rules, eachgroup is independent according to diocese,and each has its own mothcrhouse.

The Sisters of Mercy who minister atImmaculate and three other parishes in theArchdiocese come from the Diocese ofClogher, Ireland. Sister Debbie is only the

third American to join their order sincethey began working in South Florida in thelate 50s.

"This particular community of peoplewere so welcoming to me," Sister Debbiesaid. "They were a sign of what Ibelieve in.

St. Patrick's lesson:Back-to-basics works

And they were women of commitment,faith and love."

But "I had a lot of questions" at first —about the length of time required as postu-lant, novice, and then Religious before thefinal vows could be made; about whethershe could let go of her desire to studypediatric nursing and teach instead, sincethat is the main charism of the community.

Once again, "I said I would try it andsee."

After studying theology for two years at

St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary inBoynton Beach, she obtained a degree inearly childhood education from BarryUniversity in Miami Shores. Then shebegan working as kindergarten teacher atImmaculate, a job she has held for the pastfive years.

It's a move she hasn't regretted."I definitely teach kids. And I love

them," she exclaimed as her students pas-sionately congratulated her. "If I stay withthe little ones I'll be allright," she added,noting that teaching them "is very reward-ing, because they always claim you."

Although she has been a Religious sinceshe made her first profession in 1983, shesaid "what feels diffferent [now] is in myheart I know I've said 'yes' to the Lordforever. Before, I felt like I was hangingon."

The ceremony of final professioi .heReligious life is a solemn one—somewhatsimilar although much simpler than apriestly ordination — but Sister Debbie'sfeatured much joy and plenty of personaltouches.

Her mother, one brother and two sisters,along with nieces and nephews, filled thefirst pews. Behind them were close to 60other relatives and friends from the Mel-bourne area.

And along with the 17 Sisters of Mercywhose community she joined were otherReligious from the Archdiocese and twoSisters of Mercy from Melbourne — SisterDebbie's first-grade teacher and principal.

In turn, her own current and former stu-dents sang during the ceremony, as didSister Debbie herself.

Father Xavier Morras, pastor of Im-maculate Conception Church, and morethan two dozen priests also witnessed theceremony, which was presided by Auxil-iary Bishop Norbcrt Dorsey. It was he whoplaced a simple silver ring on SisterDebbie's left hand, signifyingr her ever-lasting commitment to the Lord.

Nine years seemed a long time to waitwhen she first entered, but "I really see thevalue of it now," Sister Debbie said. It wasa time to grow and mature, personally andspiritually.

Now, she concluded, "I know what Iwant, and I believe I can be happy for therest of my life."

Carolina DiTata, another eighth-grader,is new to St. Patrick's. "I came from NorthBeach Elementary where nobody kneweach other," she said. "It was more wildthere. Here people are down to earth andwe have much better teachers."

DiTata feels that what makes the teach-ers better is that they have more time for thestudents.

"The teachers know you have a problemeven if you don't tell them," said sixth-grader Carolina Tarazona. "They try to getin your personal life to help you."

"I like to think I have brought back the

style of the 50's and early 60's," Lamadridsaid. "Our approach is more self-disci-pline, with reasons why students shouldbehave a certain way. Before, we neverasked any questions."

"It's strict, but not too strict—just strictenough," added eighth-grader Lopez.

Perhaps the best compliment for St.Patrick's, however, came from one of thejudges for the Excellence award:

"If the children prefer coming to schoolrather than having a holiday, that tells ussomething about the school spirit."

But Lamadrid is not content to rest on St.Patrick's recent laurels. "We know we'renot perfect," she said. "There's so muchleft to do."

Local high school studentsrank among tops in the nation

Eighteen students from eight Archdio-cesan high schools have been named 1989Merit Program Semifinalists for theirscores on the PSAT-NMSQT, a nationalstandardized pre-college entrance exam.

They are among only 15,000 studentsnationwide to be selected, which is lessthan half of one percent of all high schoolstudents in the U.S. From these, about14,000 will be selected as finalists, earningthe right to compete for 6,000 collegescholarships.

Gimmicks substituting for true religionBy Patricia Kasten

Second in a two-part seriesGREEN BAY, Wis. (NQ—While few Christian

leaders would argue with the "New Age" longing forpeace and global cooperation, when it comes toanswering the question "Who is God?" most churchleaders give the New Age answer a failing grade.

Many New Agers have answered the question bysaying, "I am God."

"T know that I exist, therefore I am. I know that thefe-.a-source exists, therefore it is. Since I am part ofthat force, therefore I am that I am," wrote actressShirley MacLaine, a New Age believer, in the book,"Dancing in the Light."

The term "New Age" can refer to many things froman all-natural diet to soft, instrumental music. It alsoembraces beliefs shunned by Christians churches, suchas reincarnation and the idea that all people arc god.

New Age believers have an "image" of God, butbelieve the reality is found in themselves when they-ealize their full potential.

"It's like the woman who always kisses her weddingring, but never kisses her husband," said FranciscanSister Ann Rehraucr, chancellor of the Diocese ofGreen Bay, during an interview with The Compass,Green Bay diocesan newspaper.

Jesus is mentioned in many New Age writings, butnot as the messiah or the son of God whom Christiansfollow. For New Agers Jesus is an example—alongwith Buddha and Krishna—of a human who hasrealized his full potential.

The belief in a god-self is the basis of another NewAge tenet questioned by Christians: the absence ofgood and evil. New Age morality relics on personalperceptions and a personal reality.

"There is a great deal of subjectivism in New Ageand <n satanism," said Father Mike Carroll, a teacher atSt. Mary Central High School in Menasha, Wis.

"Satanism, as I understand it, distorts, denies andconfuses the distinction between good and evil," FatherCarroll said.

The New Age belief in reincarnation and the highlypublicized examples of it found in "channelers," whoclaim to have long-dead spirits speaking through them,are another product of the god-self.

Lord Maitreya, originally the product of Easternmy".:icism, has been appropriated by the New Agemovement and allied churches, such as the ChurchUniversal and Triumphant.

Tarot cardsare supposed to helppeople 'focus their attention'

New Agers believe that "Maitreya is the comingworld leader, the coming world teaching, the comingChrist," said Jim Valentine, director of a Milwaukee-based center which counters cults and the occult from aChristian perspective.

The characteristics attributed to Maitreya, Valentinesaid, "fit rather closely with a biblical version of theAntichrist" described in the Book 01 Revelation.

Some of the political aspirations of New Agers alsoconcern Christians, Valentine said.

"They look to a one world-government. To achievethis, they look toward the necessity of some coercionand some abrogation of freedom," he said.

"They're talking almost a fascistic-type re-educationprogram for recalcitrants and, if they're really prob-lems," Valentine said, some New Agers would evenresort to murder. The New Agers believe their victims"will reincarnate later and be in a better state anyway."Pat Whitcomb, a deacon at Green Bay's St. John theEvangelist Parish, thinks Valentine's concern may beexaggerated. The deacon became acquainted with NewAge ideas while studying about cults in conjunction withhis youth ministry work.

But Whitcomb agrees the movement would bedangerous if some people's fears about it being racistwere true. "I don't know if that's part of it," he said. "Ifit is, it's very underground."

Father Carroll, who attended a 1983 talk sponsored bythe Church Universal and Triumphant, said he wasdisturbed by references there to "the great whitebrotherhood," by mind-control tricks used in the talkand by "heavy, anti-Semitic echoes."

The longing for meaning, the search for God and thequest for peaceful existence on the planet attract people

to the New Age. But in the past, the same needs anddesires have led people to the Christian faith, FatherCarroll said.

"We need to read the signs of the times and say, 'OK,what aree the needs and how can we respond as aCatholic community?'" he said. "The needs that aresurfacing are no different that they ever were, justrepackaged. And we've got 2,000 years of experience."

One Green Bay resident who was baptized Catholicand now follows some Age practices said his search formeaning began when his children, who attendedCatholic schools, asked him about his religious beliefs.

"It started my search back to myself, to a spiritualconnection," said the man, who asked that his name notbe used. "I never forgot some of the good stuff of mychildhood. And I missed that."

The Catholic Church, and all Christians, need to ,"reflect on the unmet spiritual needs of the people whoare being drawn" into the New Age movement, FatherCarroll said.

Christians curious about New Age should examine itcarefully, comparing it to what their religious experienceand tradition has to say about the same issues, Whit-comb said.

At the same time, the deacon said, one must realizethat "it's very tempting when someone says, 'I can showyou the way. I can solve all your problems. You'll havenothing but a peaceful existence.'"

"For Christians, it's their relationship with God andthe depth of that relationship which gives them theiroverall sense of worth and growth in life," Whitcombsaid.

Here are a few things I have been wondering aboutI-Uely. If any of you has answers, I would appreciate

jring from you.• Why, in a pluralistic society, is it deemed inappro-

priate for Christians to push their lifestyle on people,but in the name of civil rights, federal courts arehelping homosexuals push their lifestyle on everyone?

• How can the constitutional right of privacy be sopowerful that it protects a woman's right to kill anotherhuman being (her own child for heaven's sake!) in theact of abortion, but so weak that it cannot protect menwho want simply to meet together in men-only clubs?(I don't particularly favor these, I just marvel at thesituation).

• How come some artificial sweeteners were jerkedoff the shelves years ago when they were found tocause cancer in laboratory rats, while cigarettes, whichcause cancer in human beings, continue to be soldeverywhere? Do rats have lobbyists i Washington?

• When will the American Civil Liberties Union(ACLU) publish a book entitled: The Rights ofReligious People, since the right to freely practicereligion is the very first right granted in the Bill ofRights. (In case you didn't know it, the ACLU alreadyhas published books on the rights of young people,

indian tribes, gays, women, crime victims, singlepeople, authors, artists and teachers.)

• Speaking of the ACLU, it has long believed that in afree society all ideas, no matter how repugnant, deserveto be heard (this extends even to child pornography).So how come it keeps suing to prevent the creationistview from being taught in public schools?

'When will the ACLUpublish a bookentitled The Rights ofReligious People, sincethe right to freely prac-tice religion is the veryfirst right granted in theBill of Rights?

• Why is it deemed inhumane for elderly people whoare dying to be kept on life-support systems, butinhumane not to keep dying infants on life supportsystems until their organs can be removed? Does thevalue of spare parts determine the value of human life?

• How is it permissible for a school nurse to recom-mend that a pregnant child get an abortion without herparent's permission but illegal for a school nurse todispense an aspirin without a parent's permission?

• How is it that the press and the pornographers getaway with leveling the charge of "censorhip" againstthose who would enforce anti-obscenity laws? By itsvery definition, censorhip refers to the prior restraint ofexpression. Not a single obscenity law in the countryapplies until after something is published. By that time,the information has been disseminated and the term"censorship" does not apply.

• Speaking of obscenity, statistics continually showthat only about 20 percent of a video store's rentalbusiness is in obscene "adult" video. That means mostpeople rent comparably good stuff. Why don't more ofthem speak up and threaten to take their businesselsewhere unless the junk goes? They have a lot ofclout they aren't using.

As I said, if any of you has answers, I'd like to hearthem.

Editorial PageShroud a fake?~whence the tears?

Increasingly we are hearing reports "leaked" from this or that source about therecent tests made on the Shroud of Turin.

The Vatican had authorized state-of-the-art carbon dating tests to be made on therelicbelieved by many to be the cloth Jesus was 'shrouded' in after the crucifixion. Ithas been venerated thusly for decades and only now has modern science made itpossible actually to date the cloth reliably.

An official report has not been made by the Vatican just yet, but press accountsfrom alleged scientific sources indicate that the testing dates the cloth only to themiddle ages, the point at which its past has always become murky—thus indicatingthat the cloth was created- faked-- many centuries after Christ.

If this, indeed, turns out to be the case, what are we to make of it? There have

always been charlatans ready to turn a quick buck on eager faithful looking forsome tangible connection with the divine, a splinter of wood, a shard of bone, a

lock of hair—some of which become downright lugubrious.The Shroud has been perhaps the most noted and venerated relic in the world,

directly associated with Christ's resurrection. Confirmation that it is a fake mightshake some people's confidence. Certainly it will be a big disappointment, but is thediscovery of a fake relic necessarily all bad?

There is a basic issue here that goes beyond the Shroud, to the very nature of faithand belief.

You will recall from the Scriptures that Jesus chastized some of his followers fordemanding signs and wonders. He told them, rather, to follow the words he wasspeaking. We are to base our beliefs and actions on the obvious truth and goodnessof Jesus' teachings, not on spectacle.

In other words, we are to follow the example of virtue, not power. We needn'tflock to Miracle Trees; we needn't flock to every self-proclaimed "seer" who comesalong, whether they be in Bayside, New York, with their endless stream-of-con-sciousness depictions of Jesus and Mary floating around in the sky like a Cecil B. DeMille production, spouting proclamations of doom and gloom, or to Lubbock, Texas,where perhaps well meaning folks see revelation in their private thoughts andmessages in cloud formations; we don't need to see signs in patterns found on leaves,stones or pottery.

For miracles, we need only look to the newborn baby, the beauty of nature and themystery of existence itself. For faith, we need only look to the love, where it exists,between family, friend and stranger, and ultimately to the sacrifice of the Crucifix-ion. Yes, there really was a Shroud, a True Cross and a Jesus of Nazareth. Therewere also sandals and the tunic he wore and the sweat of his brow. They are all gonenow, but the legacy and love live on.

And that is all that matters. 100,000 children are homeless in the U.S. every night

'Last Temptation' is hardly an occasion of 'moral growth'Mr. J. A. Solis Silva, chairman of the

Philosophy Department at St. John Vian-ney College Seminary in Miami, au-thored an article, "The Recurring Temp-tation of Miami", in The Miami HeraldSept. 18 concerning the movie, "TheLastTemptation of Christ."

The article's conclusion is that thetemptation of Miami "is to yield to intol-erance or to the fear that disagreement isa threat rather than a boon to intellectualand moral growth," when instead weshould make sure "that every man has achance to contribute to the growth of all."In other words, the film depiction ofChrist as fornicator, among other things,should not make us intolerant, but ratherwe should welcome the profanation as ablessing to our growth.

Mr. Silva says it is a great disservice tomoral growth "If a church communicatesto its members. . .the inadvisability ofviewing a particular film. . ." Thus, wewere disserviced by our ArchbishopMcCarthy and others like Bishop NormanF. McDonald, who wrote to his faithful ofthe Diocese of Orange, California:

"The protest that has risen in this coun-try over the film. . .is not an attack onfreedom of speech or religion. It is a cryof anguish from millions of hurt and of-fended people whose deepest religioussensibilities and most revered convic-tions of Faith are being assaulted. Foranyone to further such a travesty is tobetray a callous insensitivity to the feel-ings of others. It is also to evidence areligious illiteracy attempting to mas-querade as objectivity or broadminded-ness."

Mr. Silva says when a church commu-nicates to us in such manner, "then thatmember must come to his conscience anddecide. This conflict of conscience can bePAGE 16 / Miami, Florida / THE VOICE / Friday

the very occasion for moral growth andmaturation." S top and ponder this advice.In response to our Bishop's valid pastoraladmonition, we are challenged to con-sciously and deliberately confront ourconscience with a conflict in the name ofmoral growth!

Even with arightly-formed conscience,this would be self-provocative foolish-ness. Could not this conflict be the veryoccasion for descent into sin? Is Mr. Silvaadvocating the subjectivism of the situa-tional ethic, whereby one makes a moraljudgment relative to the circumstances ofa given situation, quite apart from whatthe Church might have to say?

Mr. Silva continues, "To protect thefaithful from such conflicts by preventingthe movie from being shown.. .is to fostera church of immaturity and moral in-fancy" and such paternalism will preventthe faithful "from assuming full responsi-bility for their religious experience andfor their lives".

Is not God our Father and we his chil-dren, and in the way a child trusts its fatheror mother, we recognize that we can donothing by ourselves? "Let the childrencome to me, do not hinder them; for tosuch belongs the kingdom of God. Truly,I say to you, whoever does not receive thekingdom of God like a child shall notenter it." Mk 10: 14-15.

Mr. Silva generously recognizes that"the churches, through the legitimatepower of their teaching office, have aright and a duty to help form the con-science of their faithful". But this gener-osity becomes short-lived when he asks,"But what are the proper limits, in a plu-ralistic, democratic society, to the exer-cise of this right?"

No church, he says, has the right to limit"legitimate" expression in the arts and, September 30,1988

communication, reminding us that ourforefathers attempted to preserve thisfreedom of expression through constitu-tional guarantees. Thus, Mr. Silva findsthe "proper limits" not within the RomanCatholic Church, its magisterium, itscanonical law, but in civil authority.

But even in civil authority there is nosuch thing as an absolute right, becauseevery right has a parallel duty, exempli-fied by the familiar admoniton of Mr.Justice Holmes, that there can be no rightto cry "Fire" in a crowded theater. Per-haps Mr. Silva needs reminding of theprophetic words of John Paul II spoken tothe Hollywood moguls in Los Angeles onSept. 15,1987.

"Your work can be a great force forgreat good or great evil. . .the Churchrecognizes the need for freedom of speechand freedom of the press, just as does yourConstitution. But she goes further.Rights imply corresponding duties. ..truth and completeness should character-ize the content of artistic expression andentertainment. . .Errors in judgment,mistakes in evaluating the propriety andjustice of what is transmitted, and wrongcriteria in art can offend and wound con-sciences and human dignity. They canencroach on sacred fundamental rights."

Mr. Silva forgets that the RomanCatholic Church, is neither pluralistic tothe extent of the Currans and Lefebvresnor democratic to the extent of our systemof government. There are AmericanCatholics who believe there is a need foradapting the Church to the demands ofmodern civilization and slanting it to-wards a more democratic method, andthat there should be more scope for indi-vidual freedom of thought and action.

Among others, these are the supermar-ket pick-and-choose-your-belief Catho-

lics and the I-am-personally-against-abortion-but-I-wouldn't-impose-my-view-on-you Catholics. The errors of this"Americanism" were pointed out by LeoXIII in 1889. The secularists truly want todestroy us. It is sad that they are ablyassisted by the Modernists and assortedliberals who have infiltrated our ranks.

I would like to commend the srr>"''handful of Catholic people that I ,nessed standing at the foot of the cross,(outside of the AMC Marina 8 MovieTheatre which was showing "The LastTemptation of Christ' recently. Theywere quiet, solemn, and constantly inprayer. I'm sure they consoled our Lord.They did not draw attention to them-selves.

No, it wasn't Jesus' Mother Mary. No,its wasn' t Mary Magdalene or Mary Cleo-phas or St. John either.

But, like them, it was a small group ofpeople who did not want our dear Lord tobe alone as he suffered upon this cross thatwas built by Universal Studios.

No, after witnessing that, I knew thatboycotting, and letter writing, althoughextremely important in this matter, werenot quite enough.

Q. I am a Catholic and receiveda wonderful education and disci-pline in the Catholic schools Iattended. I am married now with achild ready for school. I alwayswanted my children to have aCatholic education as well.

I called the school last April andwas told my child would be on awaiting list. This fall he is still ona waiting list and I am not evenpermitted to fill in the requiredforms at this time.

The thing I do not understand iswhy parishioners who are Catholicare not allowed in the school whenso many children from my ownneighborhood who are not Catho-lic go to a Catholic school. Isn'tthis unfair?

It seems that Catholics should begiven first preference. (Pennsyl-vania)

A. Most parishes with Catholicschools have certain expectations fromparishioners with children in thoseschools. These expectations may involvesome sort'of participation in parish life ordesignate financial contributions throughtuition, Sunday offerings and other chan-nels.

Since we do not wish our schools tobecome socially or financially elite insti-tutions, policies nearly always providefor parents who cannot do everythingasked, but who demonstrate a genuinesense of responsibility about it.

Assuming the above conditions arefulfilled, my experience is that most par-ishes have some process which givestheir own members first turn.

Naturally I have no knowledge of thepolicies in your parish. I suggest you firstbe certain you have the facts straight, thentalk to some other parents to obtain theirinsights.

If you still feel some change should beconsidered, write to your parish schoolboard, parish pastoral council and pastor,and explain your concerns and sugges-tions.

Q. My son is dating a Lutherangirl. They are both strong in theirfai th . One of our fellowparishioner's sons received a dis-

isation from the bishop to be^married in the bride's Protestantchurch. How do you go about it?(Indiana)

A. You are speaking of what is calledtechnically a dispensation from the Formof Marriage. This simply means that thebishop dispenses from the obligation allCatholics have to be married before apriest or other Catholic official to bevalidly married in the church. Undercertain circumstances the bishop maygive such a dispensation.

Preparations for the marriage are pur-sued the same as if the couple were beingmarried by the priest. These preparationsare done with the parish priest of the brideor groom. He is the one to approach toinitiate such a request.

Learn from the elderlyI recently had the privilege of judging a senior citizen essay

competition sponsored by Connecticut's Department on Ag-ing. The contest was the brainchild of David Shuldiner, thedepartment's "humanist in residence."

He encourages seniors to tell the stories they remember fromtheir younger years. This living history should not be lost, hesays, for it is part of our past and its people are developing.

As I read the essays, I was struck by one common denomi-nator: None had even a touch of bitterness.

The writers admitted to hard times, recalling two world wars,the influenza epidemic that took mothers or fathers, the flood of1955 in Connecticut, the difficult Depression years, illness andthe deaths of children. But none were complaining, lamentingor bemoaning their woes. In fact, each expressed gratitude fortheprivilege of being alive. Even those who had been dirt poorfinancially remembered their past as rich.

For me the writers were an inspiration. So often you hearpeople complain about the old, saying they are self-centeredand whiny and sometimes cantankerous.

That may be true for some but certainly not for all.One beautiful woman who suffered a stroke wrote, "My

mind is my attic of wonderful memories." S he talked of missingher "darling Joe," the young man she married many years agoand who died in 1979. And she spoke of children and grandchil-dren saying, "What joy they have given me!"

Another woman, who still sleeps in the bed she was born in,wrote a la Charles Dickens, "It has been the best of times. It hasbeen the worst of times—1894-1988, the 93 years I have lived.I couldn't have chosen a better time in history to have experi-enced the changes of a century."

Many recalled experiences of their immigrant parents. Onewoman remembered her father's terrifying adventure emigrat-ing from Italy. She ended the story with an epitaph:

"Our parents dared to leave the known for the unknown, to

ByAntoinetteBoscogive us a start in a brand new world. They endured hardships,giving us by example a sense of strength and determination. Theyinspired in us the desire to develop and find our own horizons. Theywere my very own brave young voyagers."

Another woman wroteof her AuntFrances.aremarkable womanwho graduated from college Phi Beta Kappa around 1900 and wenton to get a law degree. Aunt Frances dreamed of owning her ownhome, a hideaway on a lake, and communicated the dream to familyand friends. With hacksaws and sweat, they turned a wild, woodedlot into a homesite on which a cottage was built.

"The joys of that monumental decision of yesteryear have beenboundless and rewarding," her niece wrote. "Aunt Fran's dreamscame true for her and continue to be shared by the members of herfamily."

What was a revelation to me was the realization that what thosepeople remembered most were the acts of love they had witnessedand experienced. I wonder if we really are aware of the power oflove? If what these senior writers say is true, the love we giveremains long after it is received.

Maybe that's why those stories were devoid of bitterness.Maybe when we grow old we filter out the bad and focus on the lovethat was there—the love that in the end led us to know that our lifewas worth living.

What does God want?It seems to me that God doesn't want us to grieve too much

about our faults and failings. He knows He could make us saintsin an instant, but He doesn't.

What He does ask is that we make a sensible effort to be goodand never hold out against His will. The words of Jesus areclear: "Learn of me for I am meek and humble of heart."

What I sense about God's love is a passionate desire to giveHimself completely to each one of us in a personal way. But wefind way s to resist. We do not always let Him have His way withus. So many of us insist on our own terms as we try to live outour destiny. A few go too far.

The story of the fallen angels proves my point. "I will notserve" was the reply of Satan. He had become so enamored ofhis own goals and objectives, that he set himself on a path oftotal resistance to God's will.

On the other hand the story of Jesus is a story of submission.He came to tell us of God's love; to win us and attract us to theFather. It was through His surrender to God's plan that we cameto know God's love. In dying Jesus became a model andprototype for all us. He loved us so much He gave up His life thatwe might live.

Like Him we are asked to teach others about the Father's love("feed My Iambs, feed My sheep"). We are called to surrenderourselves to the Father's will in reparation for sin.

What does that mean? In some cases it may mean becominga carrier of divine love, in a life of service and prayer. In otherlives it might mean suffering as Jesus did in a life offered in

union with His salvation of the world.God wants collaborators in the work of salvation, and most of us

fear the implications of such an alliance. Jesus felt the samerevulsion. In His agony in the garden He pleaded for relief.

But we know that the Father promised His unchanging love andthose who surrender to Him He.places deep within His heart.

I know we should never be afraid but I confess to you, I am notyet free of fear. God asks too much at times.

I pray for the strength to be humble and pliant. I am sure you dotoo. Let us pray for one another as we strive to abandon ourselvescompletely to His loving care.

George Washington wrote, "they are halting to level everymole hill and to erect a bridge over every brook by which meanswe were four days getting 12 miles."

On the French and Indian attack on the Braddock forces,Washington reported, "The English soldiers broke and ran assheep before the hounds. I had four bullets through my coatand two horses shot from under me." After the batde, GeorgeWashington wrote in his diary, "I heard the bullets whistle and

believe me, there is something charming in the sound."By the standards of his day, Washington was immense. After his

death, his secretary measured him at 6ft. 31/2 in. Heweighed200lbs. and had huge hands which required specially made glovesandhuge feet that took a size 13 boot. Martha, his wife, was barely 5ft. tall and whenever she wished to speak to him, she had to pluckat this coat buttons for attention.

George Washington had married widow Martha DandridgeCustis, who was plump, one year older than George and one of therichest widows in the colonies. They were married at her plantationhome which was called rather prophetically, "The White House".Marthaaddcd 17,000 acres to his landholdings and 300 slaves to his49. Washington then became one of the richest men in Virginia.

John Adams wrote that neither Washington nor Jefferson wouldhave come to the fore, but for the fortunes brought to them by theirwives, which gave them the leisure time to devote to public service.

Divorced are not aloneOften when one is separated or divorced, there is a

feeling of isolation, desperation and an attitude of 'whocares?' In an effortto publicly witness to thefact that WEthe Church cares, the Archdiocesan Ministry to theSeparated and Divorced is co-hosting with the RegionalNorth American Conference of Separated and DivorcedCatholics (NACSDC), the Ninth Annual Conference onSeparation and Divorce, Oct. 22 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. atSt. Louis Church, 7270 SW 12th St., Miami.

Father Chris Witt, Chaplain of NACSDC and Directorof Campus Ministry at the University of California - SanDiego, will be the key-note speaker. Expanding on theconference theme NEW BEGINNINGS, NEW GIFTS,Father Witt will speak on "Blessings: Turning the Givensof Life into Gifts."

As we begin to see divorce as a process rather than anevent; as a journey rather than a destination, we realizethe gift present through facing the pain. For after the painand struggle of parting can come the joy of healing and ofrediscovering self, God and friends.

The conference is about this process. It is an opportu-nity to pause to be renewed, an invitation to journeyinward to be enlightened and a challenge to reach beyondto grow.

A child's first visit to churchDear Mary: My daughter is 22 months old.

When she was an infant, I would take her withme occasionally to Mass. As she got older,however, and more difficult to control, I havebeen leaving her at home with Mom. My wife,who is Lutheran, offered to go to church withme to set an example for our daughter, but hasnot followed through.

I would like your advice on when to beginregular churchgoing with my daughter. I wouldlike to give her the experiences of the Mass andlearning about the Gospel. We do say grace athome, and she folds her hands for the prayer.

Is it realistic to expect such a young child tounderstand the Mass? I've heard that one couldwait until age 3.

Also, how do I handle any discipline matters?People in church throw dirty looks in the direc-tion of a crying or fidgety child. I've tried the"cry room," but the place is a zoo.—Indiana

Families seem to follow one of two paths regardingchurch and young children. Some take children everySunday from birth; some attend church separately orleave children in a church nursery until the child isapproaching school age. Either approach can work.

Young children naturally tend toward spontaneousmovement and talking. They express what they are

thinking and feeling. This is normal. Attending Massrequires movement and talking according to a prescribedritual. This is fine for adults, who understand what ishappening. It is alien to young children.

You are anxious to introduce your child to the faith, yetthe Mass is incomprehensible for a 2-year-old. Whatshould you do? Begin to teach your child as children havebeen taught for centuries, within the family.

Saying grace is a simple and desirable custom. Suchprayer is brief, it is accompanied by special body postureand it can be expressed in simple words. As you observe,your daughter is already learning the body posture ofprayer.

Invite your wife to offer grace sometimes, thus show-ing your daughter that prayer is an activity for all family

members.Nature is another source of God's revelation. When

you observe something beautiful in nature, join withyour daughter in a prayer of praise.

When you are out for a walk or drive, take yourdaughter to church for a visit. There is no one to disturb,you can walk around and talk at will, and you can leavewhen your daughter gets restless. Since your daughter isapproaching the age at which she will love stories, lookfor some good religious books for children. Perhaps yourparish has a library.

What about discipline when you attend church? First,do not be too harsh on the persons who get irritated. Acrying child may make it impossible for them to hear, andthey miss out on an experience they cherish. Considera-tion dictates that the parent of a crying child remove thechild immediately.

You can certainly wait until your child is 3 or older tobring her to church. When you bring a 3- or 4-year-old,keep her close to you and talk softly to her. Do not expecther to sit still while you pray the entire Mass in silencewithout so much as glance directed her way.

If you choose to take your daughter to church when sheis 2, expect her to be restless and be prepared to leave ifshe seriously distracts others. Meanwhile, begin herreligious education where it is meant to begin, in thefamily.

To hug or kissAs if we don't have enough liturgical problems divid-

ing us, there's a new one on the horizon. Hugging andkissing as the sign of peace. It seems there are a fewclergy who are speaking out against "intimate forms offriendship expressed during the sign of peace which areinappropriate in the context of the sacred liturgy."

Whew! the terminology takes one back to 'particularfriendships' which were forbidden in the seminary. Therejust might be a connection between the two.

I suspect, and hope, the hug and kiss as sign of peacewill not end up on the bishops' agenda next Novemberwhen they're struggling with finances and the dearth ofcelebrants. But, like most emotional issues, this one canescalate to absurd proportions if we have to choose upsides.

The irony is that flocks are just beginning to be com-fortable with shaking hands at Mass. We are smiling nowand meeting each other's eyes. Fifteen years ago, shakinghands was an outrage to many who viewed it as adesecration of a holy place.

We are far advanced over some other countries in ob-serving the sign of peace at Mass. I attended at leasttwelve liturgies in Ireland last summer and only twicewas peace exchanged.

In discussing this with an American couple who wereas disappointed as I in the liturgies of Ireland, I head theirsad but funny experience. To celebrate their 25th wed-

ding anniversary, they splurged on a long-anticipatedvisit to Ireland.

They flew into Knock because they wanted to begintheir visit with a liturgy at the shrine. The celebrantrushed through the Mass at breakneck speed and thenmuttered, "Show each other sign of peace if you want."

They and several other American couples exchanged ahug and kiss, whereupon he stopped the liturgy and gavea lecture or proper behavior in church. He said that ifcouples want to display wanton behavior they should doso in the privacy of their bedroom, not during the solem-nity of the Mass.

He went on for about fifteen minutes and then he saidtestily, "We aren't going to allow abunch of touchy-feelyAmericans to desecrate Our Lady."

At times, the only reasonable response to a situation is

laughter. The couple told me they had uncontrollablespasms and so did the others around them. They couldn'tlook at one another for fear of losing control and one mareven had to leave the church.

After Mass these strangers gathered in the courtyardand exploded with mirth. "He ought to go to the finalliturgy at a Marriage Encounter Convention," one said.And they roared together anew.

I don't think we' d get that kind of lecture here. Rather,the disapproving celebrant controls the situation by giv-ing five seconds for the sign of peace and then continuingwith, "Lamb of God..." Nothing more has to be said.

The problem with the handshake versus the hug and/orkiss is that my husband and I don't shake hands. It's asawkward at Mass as kissing a stranger. So if we're in anon-hugging/kissing parish, we tend to squeeze hands,not shake. I don't know if that's ecclesiastically accept-able, either.

Is it appropriate to hug and kiss during Mass? I supposewe'll have to await a reply from the theologians on thisone. Does it desecrate our Holy Mother? I suspect shehugged and kissed Jesus, and His presence made anyplace holy.

Maybe we an resolve thee issue by setting aside a"Handshaking Only" section in our churches and puttingit in front so shakers won' t be scandalized by huggers i theHoly of Holies. Such problems we have.

The Madonna of MedjugorjeIf you're like me, you've been reading

with fascination the occasional news ar-ticles about the reported visions of theBlessed Virgin to young people inMedjugorje, Yugoslavia. If you're likeme, you could use a refresher course tosum up what has and has not happenedover there. If you're like me, you'll find"The Madonna of Medjurgorje," an up-

ByJamesBreig §§coming PBS special, to be a complete,unbiased and fascinating visit to the site.

I've previewed this hour-long BritishBroadcasting Corporation production,which allows all sides to have their say,and gives plenty of background, historyand context (PBS - Channel 2 plans tooffer it Oct. 14 at 9 p.m.

As the narrator (Eilleen Atkins, whohas a wonderfully soothing voice) puts it,the special is "the story of revelation in aplaceof peace.. .of renewal of faith whichhas provoked religious conflict."

That conflict arises from the basicquestion all of us must answer: Are thevisions for real or are the seers fakers,liars, hallucinators or conmen?

A bishop and a priest from Yugoslaviasay there is nothing supernatural going on(echoing Rev. Ivo Sivric, OFM, a nativeof Medjugorje who now lives in the U.S.and who has written a book disputing thevisionaries' claims). The bishop pointsout the damage which can be done toreligion when such cases turn out to behoaxes or fantasies.

But other Churchmen heartily endorsethe visions; one parish priest even wenf to

jail for protecting thevisionaries.

Before having hisown supernatural ex-perience, his first re-action to the youngpeople had been tosay, "We don't needsigns and wonders tohave faith."

Indeed, some of the"signs and wonders"argue against belief.Those include themagic photos, gazing•into the sun and thegaudy souvenirswhich surround thecase.

We must also con-sider medical facts.Just a few weeks ago,researchers told TheNew York Times thatpeople with multiplepersonalities displayamazing abilities to control their bodies.For example, one personality might havean allergy which another personality didnot.

So it is possible that the seers believe inwhat they're doing and can pass all sortsof scientific exams—and yet still experi-ence nothing supernatural.

The counter-argument is that six youngpeople do not hallucinate simultaneously.But could they be liars? A believer in thefilm argues that the visionaries have not-ing to gain by lying for so long (thevisions began in 1981).

But I was reminded of another docu-mentary I saw about two elderly womenwho, as children, had claimed to photo-graph elves, a hoax they continued fordecades, first out of fear of punishment,then for the pure fun of putting one overon people and finally to avoid the embar-rassment of admitting the truth.

'The Madonna of Medjugorje1 which airs on Oct. 14 at 9 p.m., on Channel 2, docu-ments the social, political, and religious implications of reported visitations by theVirgin Mary to children in the Yugoslavian village of Medjugorje. Marija (pictured),who meets and prays with pilgrims, is one of two children who has had daily visionssince June 1981.

But, whether the visions are fraud, travel halfway around the world to be infantasy or faith, the story of Medjugorje the company of one of heaven's mostnow reaches beyond the original six, as notable dwellers.

That flood of visitors has changed thegovernment's initial reaction (fear ofsubversion) into something more practi-cal: a love of tourism.

As a result, Medjugorje is now morecrowded, rushed and jam-packed withgimcracks which honor the Mother ofChrist by putting her face on a dish.

If Mary is appearing in Medjugorje, wehave to ask why and what it means to eachof us. Her message—confession, fasting,repentance and reconciliation—is hardlynew; it can be found in the Bible.

As for being transported by being inherpresence, I sometimes wonder if someCatholics realize whose presence they arein at the consecration. You don't have to

I'm very ambivalentaboutMedjugorje.On the one hand, I wonder why theBlessed Virgin has to bother deliveringmessages of peace and conversion whenJesus left us the Holy Spirit, the NewTestament, the Eucharist and the Church.

On the other hand, such an attitudecould put me in the company of the Naza-reth citizens who asked, "Isn't this thecarpenter's kid?"

Then again, I sense the danger whichcan arise when people put too much oftheir faith in unproven miracles and ques-tionable events. If I may paraphraseMary's child, "A house built on sandcannot stand."

Tune in to "The Madonna ofMedjugorje." It should provoke morethought, discussion and self-examinationalong the lines I have been sharing withyou.

Since, as the author remarks, thespiritual works of mercy are little heard ofthese days, they will be listed here: toadmonish the sinner, to instruct the igno-rant, to counsel the doubtful, to comfortthe sorrowful, to bear wrongs patiently, toforgive all injuries, to pray for the livingand the dead.

What do these mean and how doesone practice them in our modern world,especially with its great emphasis on thepsychological dimension of human exis-tence and human conduct? This is thepoint of Ms. Callahan's book. She noteswell that the demands of the corporalworks of mercy vary much less from ageto age than do the demands of the spiritualworks.

Indeed, the very meaning of the word.^lritual" cannot be taken for granted

nowadays. Ms. Callahan emphasizes that

"spiritual" does not mean unbodily, un-historical, unsocial. It means simply thatthe bodily human being is also more thanmerely bodily, like a rock. There is aconscious and a reflective dimension tohuman nature, and it is here that the spiri-tual works of mercy come into play.

There are different ways of beingreligious and spiritual, since there aredifferent ways of being human. Often thistruth is contained in the statement that weall have different personalities. Certainlyparents of more than one child are in-tensely familiar with the reality of thistruth about human nature. Ms. Callahantakes this truth into special considerationin each chapter.

Among many points well made inthis book, I shall single out only a few. Toforgive may not require or enable to for-get. "Tough love" has roots in the Chris-tian tradition. Forgiveness is at the heartof Christianity. Consolation can be pro-vided in both informal spontaneous andformal ritual ways.

She also strikes a good balance be-tween the older glorification of sufferingas God's will and the newer pop spiritual-

ity which reduces finite human existenceto Gidgetlike gushes of "Oh, isn't every-thing just wonderful here on the divinebeach of God's creation."

Her explanation of prayer in terms ofcreation and humanity as the image andlikeness of the triune God is excellent.Similarly excellent is her discussion of"bearing wrongs" in the context ofAmerican history as well as more recentliberation theologies.

The book is well-written and, exceptfor the first chapter, readily understand-able. Ms. Callahan is perhaps to be com-mended above all for being able to appre-ciate and use both the new insights ofpost-Vatican II theology and the old in-sights of what is often called pre-VaticanII folklore and devotional Catholicism.This alone would make the book worth-while. But there is also much more.

People who have a sense of humor have at least twoadditional things going for them. They have a sense ofbalance and a sense of perspective. Those extra senses,plus humor, frequently add up to such physical andpsychological good health that humor ought to berecommended to everyone. Often.

Once in awhile someone without humor can help usappreciate its value. Hamlet, for example, who knew athing or two about depression, apparently also knewsomething about humor — or its absence. InShakespeare's play, the prince of Denmark said:

"I have of late ... lost all mirth.... It goes so heavilywith my disposition that this goodly frame, the earth,seems to me a sterile promontory.... Man delights menot; no, nor woman either."

There's much to learn from Hamlet.There is plenty of gloom, sadness and sorrow in his

life, but no joy of living to counteract the heavinessthat controls his mood. Hamlet's life is out of kilter.

Balance means there is room for both sadness andjoy, seriousness and frivolity; that there is an equalityon the debit and credit sides of the ledger.

"Well-balanced" turns out to be an ultimatecompliment, meaning we can ride the wind with anevenness, not tipping to either side, remaining oncourse. Balanced people have a range of tastes, aretolerant of others' opinions and are not swayed toeither extreme.

When the Book of Ecclesiastes says there is a timefor everything under the sun — a time for planting, atime for reaping, a time for mourning and a time fordancing — it sums up the principle of balance thateluded Hamlet. His frame of reference was one-sided,partial, obscured.

Presumably, humor would have restored the balanceand triggered a happy medium.

The second thing Hamlet points to is that he has lostperspective. Now it seems to me that we use three clearverbs to describe perspective: We either "keep" it,"gain" it or "lose" it.

The least desirable event associated with perspectiveis to lose it. Keeping it or gaining it are positivebecause each says that we are able to relate things toeach other and to the whole.

When we lose perspective, we lose connections andmake big things of little episodes and vice versa.

A friend of mine, a tired businessman, told me thathe dreaded meeting with a crabby, hard-to-pleaseclient His fantasy scenario had him losing the account,seeing his business fold, going on welfare, beinghomeless and dying in the streets.

That's what you call losing perspective! My friendallowed his fantasy to interfere with the bigger picture.He needed to step back and regain perspective.

It doesn't take much imagination to see how a senseof humor helps do this. Writer Dolores Curran tells thestory of a frazzled mother preparing dinner with severalchildren underfoot.

About to lose perspective, she reached for an aerosolcan of whipping cream and sprayed some oneverybody's mouth. Time for a giggle. Time forperspective to be restored.

The absence of humor provides the lethal blow tobalance and perspective: The migraine becomes life-threatening. It is imagined as a cerebral hemorrhage, adeath sentence.

The migraine becomes all-consuming. And even thethought of shrugging off worry or laughing it away isthe cause of even more up-tightness.

What does Hamlet need to hear?Probably the same thing we do, namely, to lighten

up, to soar to new imaginings rather than to sink withold ways of doing things and to "enjoy."

Joy and humor go hand in hand. And life withouthumor is not the Good News that God has in store forevery one of us.

What is so fascinating about a person who makes adramatic change in lifestyle?

It happens occasionally. A person at the height of acareer that most people would regard as successfulthrows it all overboard to accept a much lower-payingposition in a totally different field that he or she feelswill be more meaningful.

Or, a family departs from the neighborhood it longhas called home, leaving job, friends and familiarsurroundings, to pursue a new and greatly simplifiedlifestyle in a different kind of setting.

From time to time such people are featured innewspaper articles and TV reports. To be sure, othersare curious to hear the story of people who socompletely change their lifestyle.

Perhaps the story is interesting because it contains anelement of surprise. Others find it noteworthy thatpeople would — or even could — so dramaticallychange the ordinary structures of their lives.

What kind of people would make such a decision?they ask. What makes them tick?

One remarkable thing about people who freelydecide to make a positive and dramatic lifestyle changeis the degree to which they exercise their own decision-making ability to determine what course their lives will

take.It would be easy to think of a lifestyle as something

society virtually hands over to you; minor personaldecisions are made to alter that lifestyle and to suit it tooneself.

But to really seize control over it with regard to someof the basics? Is it just plain crazy? Or can it be a formof maturity?

Sometimes families carefully and thoughtfully reacha decision that their lifestyle must change. They maysense that they are losing more than they are gaining asthe ordinary course of events saps their energies androbs them of time to spend together.

Whatever the reason for their decision, it isinteresting that they attempt to come to terms with theirneeds and values, and to inject these forcefully into theway they live.

Without a doubt there are people who make lifestyledecisions that are utterly irresponsible. Sometimes, forexample, dramatic lifestyle decisions are made byindividuals in isolation from those who are part of theirlives — as if to say that important decisions canncmade together. ' •

Buf sometimes people make important lifestyledecisions in an exercise of real responsibility. Andwhen' they do, it can really be quite a fascinating story.

The earliest Christians attracted little attention at firstsince their external lifestyle was so much like that oftheir contemporaries. But they were different and thedifference was bound to show eventually.

The time would come when Jewish Christians wouldbe excommunicated from the synagogue. It had notbeen so bad when these Jews said that Jesus was theMessiah, although that was considered preposterousenough. But as it grew clear that they looked upon himas the Son of God, some considered such a beliefdownright blasphemous.

Ejection from the synagogue caused a practicaldifficulty for Christians throughout the empire.

According to Roman law, Judaism could be practicedanywhere. It was a lawful religion. Christianity wasnot.

This meant that a Christian was an outlaw,technically an "atheist" in a society where other godsand goddesses were worshiped. So Christians weresubject to capital punishment. Understandably, theyheld on to the protection of the synagogue as long asthey could.

Being a Christian in the Roman Empire called fortough decisions, courage, even heroism.

How, for instance, could one belong to a trade guildwhen every meeting involved religious ceremonies to.honor its sponsoring god or goddess? Did one have torisk financial ruin to be a faithful Christian?

lifestyle is very limited. Many newimmigrants, for instance, pay anexorbitant human cost to make it in ourAmerican big cities.

Their lives are sometimes a deadeningrepetition of working to earn money andgoing home to sleep to be able to returnto work and earn more money. Manyspeak quite openly about how lonelythey are in a city like New York.

One time, driving back to Manhattanfrom LaGuardia Airport, I stopped acabdriver who had his window wideopen even though it was winter. Inresponse to my asking why he keptslapping his face, he explained it was tohelp him to stay awake. He added thathe had been working 24 hours.

When I suggested he needed rest, hesaid, "But I have to provide for myfamily!"

Given his work schedule, it turned outthat he had no time to spend with hisfamily.

or other people, lifestyle meansuuving in the fast lane, sporting trendyfashions, hanging out with those whoare "with it" and being night people.

Such a lifestyle may be flashy, but

that doesn't mean it frees a person upand releases the potential for growth.

A flashy lifestyle may skim so closealong the surface of every relationshipthat it nurtures irresponsibility andmakes wholesome and deeprelationships all but impossible.Television soaps and situation comediesserve a steady diet of such dead-end

some lifestyles paralyze a person'sgrowth. But other lifestyles are asources of inner freedom conducive togreater personal growth.

One example of such a lifestyle isvery close to me — that of my mother,76, and my father, 80.

My parents always have been hard-working people. The family home in

The New Testament contains manyexamples of lifestyles that are nothumanly and religiously productive.

—There's the Prodigal Son who lefthome and squandered his inheritance ondissipated living. He soon found himselfpenniless, tending swine and yearningfor their food (Luke 15:12-16).

—Then there is the rich man whoenjoyed sumptuous dinners and dressedluxuriously within sight of thedesperately poor on his very doorstep.When he died he found himselfestranged from everyone and in totalmisery (Luke 16:19-31).

We wonder if his life had beenanything more than a veneer of well-being, whether it had not been one longflight from reality. It is clear then that

Part of the family lifestyle while wefour children were growing up wasliving in an unfinished house and home.

The family house has been finishedfor quite a few years now, apart fromoccasional remodeling. But the home —that is, our relationships with each other— is not. That continues to grow anddevelop.

Until a few years ago it neveroccurred to me to wonder why. Wecould so easily have come to a pointwhere everyone would stop growing.

But then one day the four of us got aphone call telling us the cellar, the attic,the storerooms and the garage were

being cleaned and there was to be agarage sale. Our parents said if therewas anything we wanted, we shouldclaim it. Otherwise it was going ...going... gone.

To our amazement, all the old thingswent. The garage sale was a greatsuccess and the house was spruced up.All this was in preparation for ourparents' golden wedding anniversary.When we got home for the celebration,we found everything uncluttered andneatly in order.

Our parents had opted for the future.Along with the major housecleaning,they had begun walking for exercise,simplified their diet and were visitingwith friends, taking time for themselves,apart and together, and they went tochurch, where dad is an extraordinaryminister of Communion.

My parents' lifestyle fit their ageperfectly. It freed them up and ensuredthat they would continue to grow ashuman beings and Christians. Theirlifestyle also made room for theirchildren and grandchildren.

Our parents still are teaching us a lotabout life and what makes for anappropriate lifestyle. We do not have farto go to find out that a good lifestylenurtures freedom and growth.

The New Testament book of Revelation (13:17)gives the impression that one had to bear the stampedimage of a beast on the right hand or forehead.

"No one could buy or sell except one who had thestamped image of the beast's name or the number thatstood for his name."

What does this mean? It is metaphorical language,typical of a kind of writing called apocalyptic. Thepassage doesn't mean people literally had to gettattooed. It was worse than that.

People had to venerate the image of the emperorpublicly in order to transact ordinary business. Thiswas unthinkable for a Christian.

Everywhere the Christians turned in ancientsociety, they were forced to decide for or againstChrist.

Compromise was out of the question.

OKLAHOMA CITY (NC)—Poundforpound, John Smith is tough. He'll findout how though he really is at the Olym-pic Games in Seoul, South Korea, repre-senting the United States in freestylewrestling in the 136.5-pound division.

His record includes two National Col-

When Smith, 23, competes in SouthKorea, he'll be carrying with him the bestwishes and prayers of his friends at Okla-homa State University, Del City HighSchool, St. Paul the Apostle Church inDel City, St. John University Parish inStill water, and his family—six sisters,three brothers, and his parents, Lee Royand Madalene Smith.

"My parents have been very suppor-tive," Smith said in an interview with TheSooner Catholic, newspaper of the Arch-diocese of Oklahoma City. "They alwayshave been there when I needed them,whether I won or lost. They never putpressure on me to win."

The American champion described theintense preparations undertaken by theU.S. wrestlers at the Olympic Village inColorado Springs last August.

Each day included drill on techniques,conditioning exercises, and more than an

hour of hard wrestling. Daily workoutstook four hours.

At the end of a two-and-a-half-hour,morning session, the athletes would run10 100-yard sprints, five 220-yard runs,two 440-yard runs, race up and down thestadium stairs for 20 minutes, and thenrun three miles in about 18 minutes.

Smith has paid for his status atop thewrestling heap no only through his rigidregimen but by working through injuries.

He casually mentions that he has bro-ken all 10 finder at least once and has had20-25 broken finger bones overall. Andhe is going into the Olympics with adamaged shoulder.

"Injuries are a real test," he said.

"You've got to wrestle in pain. If youdon't go into a tournament injured, youhaven't been training hard enough."

Why suffer all this? "The desire to bethe best at something," Smith said. "Inwrestling you have control over your own

destiny. It gives me the hunger you needto be a champion."

Smith's father will be there at theOlympics, as always, sweating out thematches. Madalene Smith will stayhome, near the family television.

"She won't watch it," young Smithpredicted, He suspects his mother insteadwill be around the corner in the hallway,praying her rosary, as always, and frettingabout her son's fingers.

PHOENIX, Ariz. (NC)—For a Catho-lic young man named Dan Majerle whoknows how to shoot buckets the transi-tion from a collegiate team to Olympicbasketball trials was made in record time.

One week he was a virtual unknov/nplaying basketball for Central MichiganUniversity. The next, he was drafted byan NB A team and asked to compete in theU.S. Olympic basketball trials.

In late August, the 6-foot-7 Majerlewas chosen to play forward on the final12-man Olympic team, at the 1988 Sum-mer Olympics, in Soul, South Korea.

During the Sept. 16-Oct. 2 games,Majerle was expected to be "on the court"doing a little of everything—diving,scratching, scrambling and long-rangeshooting.

The native of Traverse City, Mich.,who was a first-round draft choice for thePhoenix Suns, recently signed a $2.2million five-year contract with the Suns;.

But Majerle has spent nearly all sum-mer at Jesuit-run Georgetown Universityin Washington practicing with the Olym-pians under the watchful eye of the team' s

great," Majerle said about the trials. "It'ssomething that I'll never be able to everhave again.

"Just making the Olympic trials a..*_getting this far and having the chance tomake the final team has been a greatexperience. It's something that I'll re-member for the rest of my life," he said.

Majerle said making the Olympic teamwas something he had hoped for since hisfreshman year at Central Michigan.

Majerle, who was raised a Catholic,said his faith remains strong. "I just grewup and believed in God. And I put myfaith in him and knew that he'd look overme," he said.

He said his parents and two brothersplay an important role in his life.

"My family has really helped me.They're the main thing that's really keptme going. They support me all the waythrough, and (with) my basketball career.

"So anything I've needed or any helpI've needed from them, they've alwaysbeen there. We're all very close and wego through everything pretty much to-gether," Majerle said.
