Cũng như nhiều quốc gia, Việt Nam đã phải hứng chịu đợt sóng lây nhiễm Covid-19 lần thứ 4 khủng khiếp bắt đầu từ tháng 05/2021. Tuy nhiên, như bao người Việt Nam, tôi lạc quan về tương lại phía trước vì đất nước này đã từng đứng vững qua bao thử thách khắc nghiệt trong quá khứ.

Hòn đảo Phú Quốc xinh đẹp của chúng ta cũng bị ảnh hưởng nặng nề bởi đại dịch, nhất là đối với hoạt động kinh tế du lịch. Tuy vậy, chúng ta cũng đầy lạc quan khi biết được rằng, Phú Quốc cố gắng hoàn thành mục tiêu tiêm chủng toàn dân trong tháng 10/2021 để mở cửa đón du khách trở lại vào dịp cuối năm 2021!

Tôi cảm nhận được nhiều thay đổi và sự cải tiến ở nơi này không chỉ đối với hạ tầng mà còn cả các dịch vụ để Phú Quốc trở lại là điểm đến tuyệt vời nhất cho mỗi du khách.

Longing for freedom!As I write this, the world

seems to be heading in the right direction; countries are striving for their vaccination targets in order to get themselves back to some sort of normality.

Not alone in this challenge, Vietnam too has seen the terrible impact first hand with the recent 4th wave which started in April this year taking a terrible toll.

However, like the ever so optimistic and resilient Vietnamese people I too am looking to the future for this great country that has a proven track record of getting back on their feet.

Our beautiful Island too has also been greatly affected with the tourist economy being hit hard, but yet again there is optimism! As Phu Quoc reaches their own vaccination targets towards the latter part of this year we will soon see tourism re commence, albeit slowly but surely as that pathway becomes more transparent.

Change can always be a good thing too!

The vibe I get on the street is that change will bring many much needed improvements to not only the organizational infrastructure but also to what will be on offer for visitors to our amazing destination.

Best time to Go

Thời tiết ở đảo

The prime time to visit is November to April when skies are blue, the sea is clear and diving at its best!

Mùa du lịch lý tưởng nhất là từ tháng 11 đến tháng 04 hàng năm với thời tiết nắng ấm, biển xanh yên bình rất thuận lợi cho các hoạt động vui chơi khám phá các vùng biển.

The dry season in Phu Quoc is typically November through to April, when the skies are blue, the sea on the west coast is very calm, diving and boating is at its best. We often get high temperatures and humidity leading up to the wet season in March, April and in to May but its still a good time to visit just a bit hot!

The wet season usually starts towards the end of April to early May and continues to October, sometimes even into November during this period however we can have some great sunny dry spells.

Temperatures in the rainy season are much milder which makes it more comfortable for some people, but the rain can be heavy – particularly towards the end of the season in October, when you can expect a heavy downpour every other day. Heavy rain can also be dependent at times on storm activities further north usually in central Vietnam, during bad storm seasons up there Phu Quoc would tend to get lots of rain because of it.

At most times during the rain season the good weather is usually in the mornings and ideal for early touring or simply relaxation on the beach.

The northern interior, with its waterfalls and rich vegetation, is best visited in the wet season, this is when the rivers are at their peak and the forests are lush and green – a stark difference from the dry season.

Note the wet season also has an effect on the sea around the island.On the east coast, particularly Sao and Khem beaches, the sea is often calmer and

clearer whilst the west coast can be quite rough, in contrast in the dry season the west coast is at its best with the sea like a lake! Of course, all this being said, the weather should never totally dictate when you visit Phu Quoc.

Mùa khô ở Phú Quốc thường bắt đầu từ tháng 11 đến tháng 4, bầu trời trong xanh, các bãi biển ở khu vực phía Tây của đảo rất yên bình, thuận lợi cho việc lặn ngắm san hô hay các hoạt động khám phá biển. Từ tháng 3, đến tháng 5 vẫn còn thời điểm đẹp để du lịch Phú Quốc dù trời có hơi nóng do đảo đang

chuyển dần sang mùa mưa. Mùa mưa thường bắt đầu vào cuối tháng 04 hoặc đầu tháng 05 và kéo dài đến tháng

10 hoặc sang tháng 11. Mặc dù vậy, vẫn có nhiều dịp trời nắng ấm. Nhiệt độ thường dễ chịu hơn nhưng thỉnh thoảng có những cơn mưa nặng hạt vào tháng cuối tháng 10, hoặc có khi mưa suốt trong nhiều ngày do ảnh hưởng của các cơn bão và áp thấp nhiệt đới.

Trong mùa này, buổi sáng là thời gian lý tưởng nhất cho các hoạt động vui chơi và thư giãn trên bãi biễn.

Khu vực phía Bắc đảo với các thác nước, hệ thực vật rừng nguyên sinh vô cùng phong phú là điểm đến tuyệt vời để khám phá vào mùa mưa. Các con sông ngập tràn nước, rừng cây xanh non, khác biệt hoàn toàn so với mùa khô hạn.

Mùa mưa cũng có tác động đến các vùng biển xung quanh đảo. Các bãi biển ở Đông đảo như Bãi Kem hay Bãi Sao thường yên bình, mặt biển trong xanh và lặn sóng như nước hồ. Trong khi đó, các bãi biển ở khu vực phía Tây đảo thường có sóng lớn và nhiều lúc nguy hiểm để tắm hay lặn biển. Dù đến bất cứ thời gian nào thì Phú Quốc vẫn luôn có rất nhiều điều để bạn khám phá. Vì vậy, đừng để thời tiết ngăn cản kế hoạch của bạn đến với hòn đảo xinh đẹp này.

ORIENTATION

Getting to know the island

half the length of the island, you shouldn’t struggle to find a quiet spot. Whilst Long Beach dominates the west coast, also in the north the National Park and other rural areas the key attractions, hiking trails, waterfalls and wildlife await those with a strong sense of adventure.

The 14 smaller islands to the south that make up the stunning Phu Quoc archipelago make for a great day out with fishing and snorkeling trips being very popular excursions to the remote southern island beaches. Phu Quoc’s main town is Duong Dong, located on the west coast about half way up the island.

This is a typical Vietnamese town but is developing very fast into an urban area – bustling morning markets, quiet lunchtimes and busy again in early evening as the locals finish their day and head out for fun in the cooler hours. Duong Dong has a great selection of bars, cafes and restaurants as well as a night market, supermarkets, shops and services for pretty much every eventuality.

For that local culinary experience go where the locals go and town is the top recommendation, try your luck along 30/4 street from 6pm there are some great restaurants and at reasonable prices too.

The town marina where you can always catch a cool breeze and the night market are also popular visiting spots at night.

With the rapid development of the Island in the last few years the local population is now well over 150,000 people whom historically have been

employed largely in the fishing industry.

However, as the island’s popularity continues to soar, tourism has become a main source of employment for the islanders and those coming from the mainland in search of opportunity.

If you’re moving around the island it’s useful to get your bearings, the airport is towards the southern end of Phu Quoc, about 10 km or a 20-minute drive from Duong Dong town.

There’s essentially one main road running the length of the island up the middle, which splits in the north to take you to the northwestern and northeastern corners.

There are also two other main roads are to be noted, one from the International Airport heading south to An Thoi (this is almost complete at the time of writing) and also one from Duong Dong town heading north west finishing at the sleepy coastal village of Ganh Dau.

There are of course smaller roads and lanes, and more are being added all the time as the island infrastructure develops, some back roads however are often un surfaced and may not be suitable for motorbikes or bicycles, particularly in the wet season pay careful attention.

Whatever road you take though, and however you take it, you’ll find plenty of quiet spots to explore – often with just a handful of villagers for company and that may only be on a Sunday!

That’s the beauty of Phu Quoc – so

much variety in such a small space.

This verdant Island is surrounded by a number of smaller islands mainly to the south and has some of the most beautiful beaches in Vietnam

Phu Quoc sits in the Gulf of Thailand around 45km from the town of Ha Tien on the Vietnamese

mainland, measuring approx. 48 km from north to south, and 19 km east to west, the island packs a lot in to a small space.

You can liken the shape of the Island to that of a “teardrop”, widest at the top in the north and narrowing to a small point at the bottom in the south.

Running along the west coast is the popular Long Beach, home to many resorts and restaurants and the perfect spot to catch the wonderful Phu Quoc sunset.

Tổng quan về đảo Phú Quốcđảo nhỏ bao quanh, nơi bạn có thể lặn biển khám phá đại dương hay đắm mình trên những hòn đảo nhỏ hoang sơ như hòn Dăm Trong, hòn Dăm Ngoài, hòn Mây Rút, hòn Móng Tay,….

Thủ phủ chính của đảo là thị trấn Dương Đông, nằm phía Tây bờ biển, tọa lạc gần như ở trung tâm đảo. Đây được xem là nơi nhộn nhịp nhất trên đảo và đang trở thành một đô thị lớn với các phiên chợ chật kín người, phố xá, các trung tâm thương mại hoạt động sôi động từ sáng sớm đến chiều tối. Dương Đông cũng là nơi tập trung nhiều nhất các quán bar, cà phê, nhà hàng, cửa hàng mua sắm phục vụ bất cứ nhu cầu nào của du khách và người dân địa phương. Và đặc biệt là chợ đêm mà mọi du khách khi đến đảo phải đặt chân đến.

Để thưởng thức ẩm thực Phú Quốc, bạn hãy dành thời gian khám phá ở khu phố 30/4 với nhiều nhà hàng hải sản tươi ngon, giá hợp lý. Hãy đi về phía biển Dinh Cậu để tận hưởng gió mát và khu chợ đêm Bạch Đằng sôi động.

Với sự phát triển vô cùng nhanh chóng, hiện nay ước tính dân sống trên đảo có hơn 150,000 người. Phần lớn người dân địa phương trước đây tham gia đánh bắt và chế biến hải sản hoặc làm nông nghiệp. Tuy nhiên, do du lịch phát triển nên người dân địa phương ngày càng tham gia vào lĩnh vực du lịch, dịch vụ nhiều hơn. Cư dân từ đất liền cũng đổ về đảo ngày càng đông đảo để tìm kiếm việc làm.

Để dễ dàng di chuyển trên đảo, bạn

nên chú ý đến phương hướng. Sân bay quốc tế nằm ở phía Nam đảo, cách Dương Đông khoảng 10km hoặc 20 phút lái xe. Con đường mới rộng lớn từ sân bay sẽ đưa bạn đến thị trấn An Thới ở phía Nam đảo.

Còn đi lên Bắc đảo, bạn có thể đi theo một trong 2 trục đường chính theo trục Dương Đông Bãi Thơm hoặc trục đường Dương Đông – Cửa Cạn – Gành Dầu. Ngoài ra, ở phía Bắc còn có các trục đường chạy từ Đông sang Tây và các con đường nhánh nhỏ, giúp bạn khám phá từng ngóc ngách của khu vực phía này. Hệ thống hạ tầng giao thông đang được chính quyền nỗ lực hoàn thiện để kết nối thêm nhiều điểm đến mới. Lưu ý vào mùa mưa, các đường đất đỏ thường khó đi vì vậy bạn phải cẩn thận khi khám phá bằng xe gắn máy hoặc xe đạp.

Bất cứ cung đường nào hay phương tiện gì, bạn cũng sẽ có rất nhiều điều để khám phá ở quần đảo thiên đường này.

Phú Quốc là một quần đảo xinh đẹp, xung quanh có nhiều đảo nhỏ, tập trung ở Nam Đảo, là nơi có nhiều bãi biển và hải sản tuyệt vời nhất Việt Nam.

Đảo ngọc Phú Quốc nằm hoàn toàn trong vịnh Thái Lan, cách TP. Hà Tiên 45km. Chiều dài

của đảo khoảng 48km từ Bắc tới Nam, chiều rộng khoảng 19km từ Đông sang Tây. Bạn có thể thấy hòn đảo giống hình một giọt nước, phần lớn nhất ở phía Bắc đảo và nhỏ nhắn về phía Nam đảo.

Chạy dài khu vực phía Tây đảo là Bãi Trường, nơi tập trung dày đặc resort, khách sạn, villa là địa điểm vô cùng lý tưởng để ngắm hoàng hôn. Các bãi biễn đã chiếm hơn phân nửa chiều dài của đảo vì vậy bạn sẽ không bao giờ khó khăn để tìm một bãi biển thiên đường cho riêng mình.

So với khu vực phía Tây tập trung nhiều bãi biển, khu vực phía Bắc lại thu hút với rừng nguyên sinh bạt ngàn và hệ sinh thái nông nghiệp của người dân địa phương. Đến đây, bạn sẽ khám phá rừng nguyên sinh với thiên nhiên hoang sơ cùng các thác nước trắng xóa vào mùa mưa.

In and around the main town of Duong Dong, you can get about very easily on foot. The

cooler morning hours are certainly the best times to catch the locals whether be at the local market or along the streets looking for their breakfast of the day!

Everything in town is close to hand with shops, restaurants and bars all within short strolling distance of each other. If you’re looking to head further afield then bicycles are a great option.

Away from the busier roads outside of town you’ll find you can ride at a leisurely pace and take in the quiet streets, back roads and beaches whilst getting some mild exercise, try to set off early to avoid the heat of the afternoon sun.

For longer distances, motorbikes are a convenient and a highly affordable way to experience Phu Quoc. It’s a great experience to be independent and visit parts of the island most people rarely get to see while feeling the wind in your hair.

Phu Quoc’s small size and relatively quiet roads make it ideal for exploring by motorbike so with a map, a sense of adventure and a tank of petrol you’ll be able to tour the country lanes and quiet beaches that most visitors can’t get to.

Whether you’re cycling or riding a motorbike please be alert at all times.Don’t be fooled by the slower pace of life on Phu Quoc, vehicles can sometimes be travelling fast. ‘Right of Way’ is a very loose term in Vietnam – so look out for

Make sure that you have a valid license, you must be riding legally to be covered by insurance!

Most hotels and guesthouses will help organize a motorbike

for you. Just give them enough time – usually only a few hours – and

motorbikes can be delivered to where you

are staying. You can expect to pay between

150,000vnd and 200,000vnd per day, depending on season and style of scooter/

motorbike.

We recommend the best place to rent a taxi or motorbike is through your Hotel or Resort. If you’re in a small group, or would just like to sit back and let someone

else do the driving, then taxis can be rented by

the day for approx. $50 for 6 hours or half day

approx. $30 for 4 hours.Most taxis are 7-seaters

so are perfect for families who want to get out to explore and hit some

remote beaches.

We suggest booking at least a few hours in advance to be sure of

getting a vehicle at the time you want. English

speaking drivers are hard to come by so have a map at hand to guide

the driver to the places you wish to visit, some

drivers may want to take you to another place

where they can earn a commission so be clear as to where exactly you

want to go.

REMEMBER SAFETY COMES FIRST:

Check your insurance. If the bike is bigger than

50cc you may not be covered in case of an

accident.

Helmets are to be worn at all times and be careful

of cheap flimsy looking ones, when you need them

they need to save you!

It's an obvious one but don’t speed or drink and ride, biggest causes of

accidents are speed and alcohol

Cover up! You catch the sun a lot quicker than

you think on a bike

Avoid riding at night – street (and some vehicle)

lighting is often inadequate and there are plenty of dogs wandering about

Bạn có thể dễ dàng tản bộ dạo quanh thị trấn Dương Đông, hầu hết các điểm tham quan, cửa hàng, quán cà phê, nhà hàng và quán bar đều nằm gần nhau. Buổi sáng, bạn nên tản bộ ra chợ Dương Đông để xem người dân sinh sống và họp chợ hoặc

thưởng thức bữa sáng như những người dân địa phương. Nếu bạn muốn đi xa hơn một chút thì xe đạp sẽ là một chọn lựa

tuyệt vời. Cách xa những con phố nhộn nhịp, bạn có thể vừa thong thả đạp xe, hòa mình vào những con đường, những bãi biển xa xa tĩnh lặng, lại vừa có một bài thể dục nhẹ nhàng nhưng chúng tôi khuyên bạn nên tránh đạp xe dưới trời nắng nóng vào buổi trưa.

Xa hơn nữa, xe gắn máy là phương tiện tuyệt vời và không quá tốn kém để khám phá Phú Quốc. Tự do ghé thăm những điểm ít người đặt chân đến trên đảo và cảm nhận những làn gió mát lành lùa vào tóc bạn khi lái xe trên đường thực sự là một trải nghiệm rất tuyệt vời. Chỉ cần một chiếc xe gắn máy đổ đầy bình xăng, một bản đồ du lịch Phú Quốc trên tay là bạn có thể lang thang khám phá Phú Quốc cả ngày theo cách riêng của mình.

Tất cả các điểm lưu trú đều sẽ hỗ trợ bạn trong việc thuê xe gắn máy. Hãy đặt trước để họ mang xe đến tận chỗ ở cho bạn. Giá thuê trung bình là 150,000 đến 200.000 đồng/ngày tùy thuộc vào thời điểm bạn du lịch hoặc loại xe (xe số hoặc xe tay ga). Dù là đi xe đạp hay xe gắn máy xin hãy luôn cẩn trọng. Đừng để nhịp sống chậm ở Phú Quốc đánh lừa bạn, thỉnh thoảng các phương tiện đi lại di chuyển rất nhanh. Vì vậy, nên hãy thận trọng đối với những phương tiện ở phía trước hoặc ở bất kì đâu!

International Flights

In the last 6 months we have seen a huge increase in the number of International flights, most commonly direct daily commercial flights from Bangkok (Bangkok Air) and Kuala Lumpur (Air Asia) but there are also daily services from China (China Southern Airlines), Inchon - Korea (Vietjet Air) and Hong Kong (Vietjet Air) with services on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday.

Visa on Arrival Procedure

Most nationalities wishing only to visit Phu Quoc can obtain a “Visa on arrival letter” at the airport of entry which allows a stay of up to 30 days, see some of the key points to the procedure below:• You must have a return air ticket in

and out of Phu Quoc (and Vietnam)• Passport with more than 6 months

validity• Upon International arrival at Hanoi

or HCM City airport go to the area just before immigration to get your 30 day visa “letter” (this is not a visa in your passport)

• Now exit the International terminal and go to the Domestic terminal, here you will present your visa “letter” upon airline check in then fly to Phu Quoc, that's it!

With almost 18 months of tourism shutdown, Phu Quoc is planning to embark on a “sandbox” project at the end of this year whereby visitors can enter the island but based on fairly strict conditions particularly during the projects inception. At the time of writing the details are still unclear, however it’s likely there will be charter flights for those that are fully vaccinated and provide negative PCR test results within 48 hours of their home country departure will be able to enter providing they also stay in a designated “Covid safe” resort.

Charter flights operate regularly mainly during the dry season (Oct-March) coming from Europe, UK, Russia and China.

Đường biển Nếu đi bằng đường bộ, bạn đến TP. Rạch Giá hoặc Hà Tiên rồi bắt tàu qua đảo Phú Quốc. Tất cả các chuyến tàu cao tốc đều cập bến ở Bãi Vòng, khu vực phía Đông Nam đảo. Từ Bãi Vòng bạn có thể bắt xe bus, taxi hay xe ôm để đi các địa điểm khác. Luôn ghi nhớ thỏa thuận giá cả trước khi bạn sử dụng dịch vụ vận chuyển. GEOGRAPHY & CLIMATE Topographically varied, Phu Quoc Island offers the visitor an array of landscapes, ranging from sandy beaches to forested mountains, river plains and smaller islets surrounding it which make up an archipelago of 14 islands to the south.

In the center and south much of the original lowland tropical evergreen forest cover has been cleared leaving behind a mix of agricultural and secondary forest landscapes and a variety of rural settlements.

These areas contrast with denser and more extensive national park rainforest areas to the north, where the scenery of natural coastline and rivers at their peak and during May to October are stunningly beautiful.

ECOLOGY & ENVIRONMENT Phu Quoc is a very mountainous and densely forested Island with a total of 99 mountain peaks from the smallest of less than 100m to the largest 603 metres.

Situated in the North and North-East of the Island is the Phu Quoc National Park which covers approx.31,000 ha of land that accounts for more than 50% of the

total area of the Island!The topography of the national

park is hilly though its not particularly steep with the highest point being Mount Chua at 603m.

The park is drained by numerous, mainly seasonal streams leading to the Cua Can river, which in turn drains out of the southern part of the national park and flows into the sea on the west coast at Cua Can.

In terms of flora, the National Park is an ideal natural environment for plant species with approx. 13,000 ha of lowland evergreen forest equivalent to almost 40% of the total area of the park.

To date approx. 929 plant species have been recorded and at lower elevations in some areas of the

national park are distinctive formations of Melaleuca – beautiful evergreen trees that are alternately arranged in dark green and grey-green colors.

Regards to fauna, there are approx. 43 mammal species and among those recorded species 6 are listed as endangered by Governmental Decree, they are;

Silvered Langur, Slow Loris, Pygmy Loris, Crab-eating Macaque, Stump-tailed Macaque, Small-clawed Otter.

The park has approx 84 bird, 29 reptile and 11 amphibian species, in the sea around the Island there are approx. 125 species of fish, a staggering 132 species of Mollusk (a phylum of soft-bodied invertebrate or Shellfish) and 62 species of Seaweed.

Another point of interest in Phu Quoc is the islands native Dog, this dog was originally a wild animal and later trained as a hunting dog by the local people.These dogs have unusually sharp teeth (as they tear their food when they eat it rather than bite) and have claws that over the years have been conditioned for catching their prey and are razor sharp, though in saying this generally “their bark is worse than their bite!”

These days they are very domesticated and it’s hard to go anywhere without seeing one!

Ở khu vực phía Bắc là sự bao phủ dày đặc của rừng mưa nhiệt đới ở vườn quốc gia, nơi được xem là thượng nguồn của các con sông và dòng suối. Thiên nhiên ở nơi đây thật sự trỗi dậy vào những tháng mưa từ tháng 5 đến tháng 9, các lớp rừng trở nên xanh mướt, um tùm, những dòng sông và thác nước tuôn chảy ngày đêm.

SINH THÁI & MÔI TRƯỜNG Phú Quốc là một hòn đảo có mật độ che phủ rừng cao và dày đặc với

Nằm ở phía Bắc và Đông Bắc Đảo là Vườn Quốc gia Phú Quốc có diện tích khoảng 31.000 ha, chiếm hơn 50% tổng diện tích của đảo!

Địa hình chính của vườn quốc gia là đồi núi với đỉnh núi chúa có chiều cao 603m.

Vườn quốc gia Phú Quốc có nhiều con suối chảy theo mùa đổ ra sông Cửa Cạn theo hướng Nam rồi đổ ra biển ở hướng Tây.

Về mặt thực vật, Vườn Quốc gia là môi trường tự nhiên lý tưởng cho các loài thực vật với khoảng 13.000 ha rừng thường xanh thấp, tương đương với gần 40% tổng diện tích của vườn.

Đến nay đã ghi nhận được 929 loài thực vật ở các độ cao thấp khác nhau, đặc biệt là cây tràm với màu xanh xám đặc trưng.

Về động vật, có khoảng 43 loài động vật có vú, trong đó có 6 loài được liệt kê là có nguy cơ tuyệt chủng cao theo Nghị định Chính phủ.

Vườn quốc gia còn có khoảng 84 con chim, 29 loài bò sát và 11 loài lưỡng cư. Khu bảo tồn biển xung quanh đảo có khoảng 125 loài cá, 132 loài động vật thân mềm (loài động vật không xương sống mềm hoặc động vật có vỏ) và 62 loài rong biển.Một điểm đáng quan tâm nữa của Phú Quốc là loài chó xoáy bản địa, chó xoáy này ban đầu là động vật hoang dã ở rừng Phú Quốc sau đó được người dân địa phân nuôi, thuần chủng và đào tạo để trở thành chó săn mồi. Những con chó xoáy Phú Quốc có răng sắc bén, móng vuốt dài, chân có màng để có thể săn mồi cả ở dưới nước. Ngày nay, chó xoáy được nuôi ở nhà rất nhiều và bạn dễ dàng bắt gặp chúng khắp nơi trên đảo.

Of course in recent times this is more so, with it being almost two years since we had that freedom to move, this makes that “re-connection” right at the top of our list!

saying the stress factor is a big one, we all know the negative impact this can have on our health however conversely relaxation and happy vibes we also know can do wonders to ones state of mind.

While everyone’s interpretation is slightly different, we can all agree that being able to relax and turn off from our daily routines and into something completely different can certainly improve ones outlook immensely.

#3 CultureThat “re-connection” we mention above is not that different

to this one, some really miss that interaction with those from foreign lands, a kind of experience that completely removes them put of the comfort zones they know too well.

There are those, also like my own self who enjoy learning about different cultures and how people live, this certainly gives you a sense of perspective and how lucky you may be back in that comfort zone wherever it is.

than wandering through an Asian market discovering all the odd delicacies on offer, the unusual smells can be a challenge to overcome at times, but without this you can’t have that right?

Sure there will be some nasty taste challenges along the way, whether it’s deep fried crickets, fermented shrimp paste (this one is not on my palette list!) or even the King of all fruits, the Durian,

Just ask anyone what exactly is enticing them to get back on a plane again and I am sure you will find that each individual answer is somewhat different.

Some may be missing their loved ones and that be there motivation, whereas one may be like myself, more interested in trying strange delicacies and savoring the flavors of a nation, someone else may be looking to laze on that secluded beach eating into their reading library bucket list.

I also know some who go for the nature wildlife experience where others are more interested in learning about the people and the culture.

With such variety of desire, I have put together a list of interests that drive us to roam, whether it’s the connection, the food, the cultural or even pure relaxation, our senses of discovery are all totally determined by the individual.

Some are simply collectors, such things as artifacts, military memorabilia, vinyl records or even propaganda posters just to name a few.

#7 Just to go somewhere!With the last 18 months the majority of us being fairly confined

at least at some point, this last desire to travel is certainly understandable.

So the last but definitely not the least is the desire just to get to another place.

For some this could just be down the coast a few hours away for a long weekend while for others getting as far away as possible may well be their ultimate aim!

This article may not be totally accurate, it’s written not just from my own perspective with experience of 6 lockdowns and two quarantines in two different countries but it’s also the general consensus that I compiled from various family, friends and colleagues, thanks to them all for their contributions.

Let’s all hope that we can all roam the globe again soon, I know myself that after writing this my own bucket list has further expanded.

I guess that’s why, I travel to live and live to travel!

Chỉ cần hỏi bất cứ ai, điều gì khiến họ “lên đường”, tôi chắc chắn rằng bạn sẽ nhận được những câu trả lời khác nhau. Nhiều người người đang rất muốn gặp lại người thân yêu của mình sau thời gian dài bị ngăn cách bởi dịch bệnh. Một số lại muốn thả mình trên bãi biển hoang vắng đầy nắng với một quyển sách hay và cũng có không ít người như tôi, thích thử những món ăn ngon lạ và khám phá vẻ đẹp của nơi mình đến. Cũng có người thích khám phá thiên nhiên hoang dã hay muốn tìm hiểu về con người và văn hóa của các địa phương.

Dù có thể chưa hợp lý với nhiều người nhưng tôi xin mạo muội đưa ra một số lý do khiến chúng ta lại muốn xách ba lô lên và đi.

#1 Kết nốiHơn 2 năm qua, đại dịch đã ngăn trở con người chúng ta đến

với nhau. Giờ đây, khi chúng ta được quyền di chuyển và cuộc sống trở lại bình thườn thì nhu cầu gặp gỡ những người thân yêu và bạn bè, chắc chắn sẽ nằm ngay đầu danh sách, là động lực lớn nhất để chúng ta lại lên đường.

# 2 Thư giãnCuộc sống căng thẳng là một vấn đề rất lớn, tác động tiêu

cực đến sức khỏe con người. Chúng ta cũng biết, sự thư giãn và rung cảm hạnh phúc có thể làm nên điều kỳ diệu đối với trạng thái tâm trí và sức khỏe con người. Tạm dừng công việc, lang thang thư giãn để giảm stress và cải thiện sức khỏe là lý do chính đáng để mỗi chúng ta “quẳng gánh lo” đi mà vui thú với hành trình của mình.

# 3 Văn hóaSự “tái kết nối” mà chúng tôi đề cập ở trên không khác

với điều này.Có những người, như bản thân tôi, thích tìm hiểu về các

nền văn hóa khác nhau và cách con người ở vùng đất đó sinh sống ra sao. Điều này chắc chắn mang lại cho bạn một góc nhìn mới và hẵn là bạn sẽ vô cùng may mắn khi giờ đây, mình được trở lại những vùng đất thú vị đó.

# 4 Thức ăn Một điều yêu thích khác của riêng tôi là lang thang qua

một khu chợ châu Á để khám phá tất cả những món ngon, vật lạ kèm với những mùi hương kỳ lạ. Những món có thể làm cho bạn sợ hãi khi trông thấy và ngửi chúng như dế chiên giòn, mắm tôm hay sầu riêng (vua của các loại trái cây ở

châu Á, có mùi thối như cống rãnh nhưng hương vị ngon thần thánh đến kinh ngạc!). Thật ra, nếu không có những thử thách mùi vị ấy, làm sao bạn có được những kỷ niệm nhớ đời, để rồi lại thôi thúc bạn lên đường!

# 5 Thiên nhiên, động vật hoang dã & các khu bảo tồnRất nhiều người quan tâm đến thiên nhiên kỳ thú, cuộc

sống hoang dã hay các khu bảo tồn. Họ mong được đến một vùng biển để lặn ngắm các rạn san hô lung linh, tham gia dọn dẹp bãi biển địa phương hoặc đi bộ thư giãn trong rừng hay ngắm chim trời. Đó thật sự là động lực để kéo chúng ta thoát ra khỏi thói quen nhàm chán hàng ngày.

# 6 Sở thích đặc biệtĐây cũng là một lý do nữa để lên đường. Đối với một số người, đó có thể là nghệ thuật nhiếp

ảnh, ghi lại khoảnh khắc của một nụ cười hạnh phúc, hay vẻ mặt nhăn nheo phản chiếu một cuộc sống gian khổ hoặc thậm chí là chụp những con bướm vô cùng xinh đẹp trong thiên nhiên. Một số khác, đơn giản đi là để tìm kiếm cho mình bộ sưu tập chẳng hạn như đồ tạo tác, kỷ vật quân sự, đĩa nhựa hoặc thậm chí là áp phích tuyên truyền của một giai đoạn lịch sử.

# 7 Chỉ để được đi đâu đó!Gần hai năm qua, chúng ta bị giam trong thế giới nhỏ

hẹp của mình vì sự bùng phát của đại dịch. Giờ đây, sự “cuồng chân” ấy làm cho chúng ta ước ao được bước ra khỏi nhà, chỉ là được đến bất kỳ một nơi nào đó cũng thỏa lòng.

Đối với một số người, có thể là một chuyến ngao du ra biển cách nhà vài giờ di chuyển hay dành cả những ngày nghỉ cuối tuần để để đi đến một nơi càng xa, càng tốt.

Ước nguyện được đi du lịch ngay lúc này là mong ước của tất cả chúng ta.

Bài viết này có thể không hoàn toàn chính xác với nhiều người, nhưng đó thật sự không chỉ là những trải nghiệm và quan điểm của riêng cá nhân tôi sau 6 lần sống trong sự phong tỏa và hai lần bị cách ly ở hai quốc gia khác nhau mà còn là quan điểm chung mà tôi đã tổng hợp từ gia đình, bạn bè, đồng nghiệp của mình.

You may well be staying on a stunning beach at your resort or hotel but with hundreds of

kilometers of coastline waiting to be explored, Phu Quoc’s crying out for some sand-

based discovery!Phu Quoc not only has some of the best beaches in

Vietnam but is the only place in the country that faces west for magnificent sunset views.

Generally, the better beaches are to be found on the west coast where Long Beach dominates the scene stretching for over 20 km’s and though it’s very developed in some parts you can still find a deserted patch here and there.

My top recommendation on the west coast for total seclusion is the southern end of Vung Bau beach (just before Fusion resort) here you can find an amazing stretch of beach and wont see too many folk unless it’s a Sunday, you can reach it by car or motorbike.

It’s a bit of a trip but if you long for a day on a

deserted beach, pack some lunch and plenty of water for a great adventure where you will drown in serenity!

Of course I couldn’t go on without mentioning a couple of pretty impressive beaches on the South Eastern side of the Island.

Sao beach though currently a little localized is still highly recommended for a visit, a beautiful white sand beach with lots of restaurants to choose from, it can get busy with groups and jetskis in places but at the northern end you can find plenty of quiet space.

Then at the next bay there is the equally beautiful and incredibly kept Khem beach, home of the 5 star JW Marriott, if you feel like lapping up some luxury this is certainly the right place.

Of course some beaches are a little harder to get to than others but all of the beaches in Phu Quoc are worth visiting, whether it’s perfect warm clear water for swimming and snorkeling, small local seafood or BBQ joints or just the simple pleasures of a deserted white sand beach.

Bãi Sao được mệnh danh là bãi biển đẹp nhất Phú Quốc, xứng đáng để tham quan từ tháng 04 đến tháng 10. Bãi biển xinh đẹp này có rất nhiều nhà hàng hải sản để bạn ăn trưa. Phía Nam bãi Sao thường rất nhộn nhịp nhưng đi lên phía Bắc bạn sẽ tìm được nhiều không gian yên tĩnh, hoang sơ.

Long Beach Bãi Trường As the name suggests this is the longest beach and is situated on the west side of the island where most of the Hotels, Resorts, Restaurants & Bars are located. You will find some parts totally deserted and to yourself, while in the main areas it can be busy with plenty of eating & drinking options and a great place to party the night away.If you are looking for that perfect sunset cocktail just about anywhere along the main part of Long Beach is a great place to perch yourself with the camera at the ready!

Sao Beach Bãi Sao Located in the southeast corner of the island is Phu Quoc’s most beautiful beach and probably one of the better beaches in Vietnam. Now at the cross roads of massive resort development, the beach in recent times has become quite localized so don’t be surprised to find jet skis and rowdy tourist groups in the main area, either end of the beach is still relatively peaceful and worth a visit.

Cua Can Beach Bãi Cửa Cạn Located on the north west coast 10km from Duong Dong town and close to Cua Can village lies this quiet deserted beach with a beautiful river estuary. Its best accessed by boat but if you try you can find your way by trails to the beach, once you find it though you will rarely see a soul here! If you travel further just north of Cua Can (just past Chez Carole resort) you can find spectacular views of the beaches and estuary below.

Be sure you get to Fingernail Island at the southern end, with the boat anchored swim in to its gorgeous beach and you will feel like Robinson Crusoe for the day!

You can also enjoy a fantastic a seafood lunch at May Rut Island where the guy takes you out on a rickety polystyrene makeshift raft to a large net with all the live catch of the day, just pick out what you want and island time will determine its arrival!

Chỉ cách mũi phía Nam An Thới khoảng 30 phút đi thuyền là cụm đảo Hòn Thơm với hơn 14 hòn đảo nhỏ. Tại đây có nhiều bãi biển hoang sơ, rất thơ mộng, có nhiều rặng san hô đủ màu sắc và sự đa dạng của các loài thủy sản và chim biển để bạn khám phá. Khi đến đây, đừng bỏ lỡ dịp trải nghiệm cảm giác đặc biệt ở hòn Móng Tay. Hãy neo thuyền lại ngoài khơi và bơi vào bãi biển tuyệt vời này, bạn sẽ có một ngày trải nghiệm như Robinson trên đảo hoang khi xưa! Và cũng đừng quên thưởng thức buổi tiệc nướng hải sản tươi ngon và bia lạnh trên hòn Mây Rút.

Ong Lang Beach Bãi Ông Lang A beautiful long stretch of beach, only 6km from Duong Dong town, protected from the currents and waves at one end by a rocky point and is a great beach to visit. In recent times this area has boomed and you will find many resorts both on and near the beach (depending on your budget) and at night the main road is bustling with small bars & restaurants.

If you just wanted to access the beach, you can try the road before the main turn off to Ong Lang and head to the end where there is a small local café on one side and the Dinh Ba temple on the other.

Nằm cách Dương Đông 6km. Bãi biển tuyệt vời này có hình cánh cung, ít sóng, có nhiều hòn đá ở đầu bãi biển phía Dinh Bà. Trong thời gian gần đây, khu vực này đã bùng nổ các khu nghỉ mát xây dựng gần bãi biển và dọc các tuyến đường. Buổi tối, khu Ông Lang nhộn nhịp với quán bar, nhà hàng.


Nếu bạn chỉ muốn đến bãi biển, hãy theo hướng Dương Đông – Cửa Cạn rồi rẽ trái vào đường Dinh Bà (nơi có bảng bảo tồn Dugong) đi thẳng 1km là tới. Nơi đây không chỉ đến tắm biển, bạn còn có thể viếng Dinh Bà, một ngôi đền khá nổi tiếng tại Phú Quốc.

Ganh Dau Beach Bãi Gành Dầu On the top northwest side of the island lies the sleepy area of Ganh Dau and home to the magnificent Nguyễn Trung Trực temple. Just as you enter the village keep to the left and follow it to the coast where you’ll find this small quiet beach with crystal clear waters to cool off in and great views of the southern Cambodian coastline.

You can also venture to the north coast of Ganh Dau where you will find a handful of beachside resorts with nice views, you can laze the day while enjoying some great food in a very peaceful setting.

Phía cực Bắc của đảo là vùng biển Gành Dầu thơ mộng, nơi có đền thờ anh hùng dân tộc Nguyễn Trung Trực. Trước khi tới xã Gành Dầu, chỉ cần rẽ trái bạn sẽ thấy một bãi biển nhỏ, nước trong như pha lê và có thể nhìn về phía Nam vùng duyên hải của nước bạn Campuchia.

Nếu mạo hiểm hơn chút bạn đến bờ biển phía bắc của Gành Dầu, nơi bạn sẽ tìm thấy một số khu nghỉ mát ngay sát bãi biển với tầm nhìn rất đẹp. Bạn có thể thư giãn cả ngày và thưởng thức một số món ăn ngon trong khung cảnh yên bình tại đây.

Iloved going to my local grocer for many years but I found at times there just wasn’t enough options, first world problems I know, like when I urged for an Avocado, Cherry Tomato or even a different kind of Lettuce!So I decided to start back at where it all began by heading into

the main local market of Duong Dong town, it was more of an effort to get there but worth it.

Now I suddenly remember, the hustle, the bustle, the dodging and weaving your way along with one eye on the motorbikes darting around you and the other on the lovely fresh produce on offer.

It’s all there whether your after fresh fruits, vegetables and seafood, or even get a key cut, a shoe fixed, housewares or a fantastic mini mart with all kinds of handy stuff run by the infamous Mrs. Kip and I mean that in a nice way Malcom!

I couldn’t believe my ears when the lady selling me a range of different salads, herbs and vegetables spoke perfect English with a big smile when replying to my poor Vietnamese vocabulary.

I was in search of Herring, which I planned to tenderize overnight with salt, lime juice and vinegar and then layer with garlic & herbs in a jar with Olive oil.

After passing by just about everything from swordfish to fresh crabs and all kinds of shellfish there was my Herring, beautifully fresh, filleted and layered in 500g bundles, one kilogram 70,000 vnd (about $3usd)!

Tôi hay đến các cửa hàng tạp hóa để mua sắm nhưng những nơi này không có nhiều sự lựa chọn nhất là khi cần các loại rau củ quả tươi như bơ, cà chua, xà lách, rau thơm,…

Vì vậy, tôi thích ra chợ Dương Đông để được mua sắm nhiều món hơn. Dù con đường vào chợ hơi khó khăn nhưng trải nghiệm mua sắm ở nơi này luôn mang lại cho tôi nhiều điều thú vị.

Tôi luôn nhớ sự tấp nập, hối hả tại đây. Những xe gắn máy luồng lách giữa dòng người qua lại. Những món hàng tươi ngon được trưng bày và chào bán dọc hai bên đường. Không chỉ có rau, trái cây, hải sản, thịt mà bạn còn có thể đến đây để cắt một chiếc chìa khóa, sửa lại một đôi giày hay mua sắm các đồ dùng trong gia đình.

Tôi đã từng ngạc nhiên khi gặp một người bán đủ loại hàng với nụ cười thân thiện giới thiệu các loại rau cho tôi bằng tiếng Anh trong khi tôi chỉ bặp bẹ đôi ba từ tiếng Việt.

Hôm nay, tôi mua một ít cá trích tươi Phú Quốc về để ngâm với muối, nước chanh, giấm, sau đó phủ tỏi và thảo mộc trong lọ với dầu ô liu.

Sau khi đi ngang qua tất cả các hàng sò, ốc và ghẹ, tôi tìm đến quầy cá trích tươi đã phi lê vào từng hộp 500g với giá chỉ khảng 70,000đ/kg.

Getting right down to the local level



Vietnamese cuisine in general is rich and diverse; it also imprints the Vietnamese culture in many ways.

There are subtle or more obvious distinctions between the meals prepared in all the different regions of Vietnam, the main difference compared to Western food is that most dishes are made out of rice instead of wheat flour. Rice takes many forms including noodle soup (phở), noodles (bún), rolls (bánh cuốn) and water fern cakes (bánh bèo).

The people in Vietnam have very good habit of using a lot of fresh vegetables in their daily meals.

One common example, the hotpot soup with fish paste (lẩu mắm) – a specialty in the Mekong Delta region – is prepared with 36 kinds of vegetables and is usually served during the flooding season, when plants are growing more abundantly.

Seasonality is also very important and this is where the subtleties arise between North, Central and South Vietnamese cuisine.

In the South, meals are sweeter and spicier than in the North, but not as strong as in Thai food with one of the main ingredients being fish sauce.

It is used at different extents and can be more or less strong, the best fish sauce of course is said to come from Phu Quoc Island!

Fish sauce production is still today an important part of the local economy, even if the island has become more developed for tourism.

Likewise, you can find pepper farms everywhere on the island and the quality of this local spice is well renown in Vietnam and globally.

To enjoy Vietnamese food, use your 5 senses right from the time the dish arrives on the table:

- Sight: a beautifully decorated meal is more appealing, the colors must be attractive.

- Smell: the aromas emanating from the dish may come from the food or the seasoning such as fish sauce, and a skillful preparation is required to create these characteristic flavors.

- Taste: is the dish well balanced, salty enough, spicy or sour as it should be? Your tongue will let you know!

- Hearing: The sound that your food is making while you are touching or eating it has its importance too! For example, deep fried spring rolls must have a crispy rice paper texture after having been cooked and you can hear the clicking sounds of the ingredients mixing with each other as you are biting them.

- Touch: the texture of the food must feel soft or hard, just as it should be, depending on what you eat.

Vietnamese people are difficult when it comes to food; they pay attention to all these points and are never afraid to complain when something is wrong! However, if they are pleased with their 5 senses, they will call it an adequate meal.

Perhaps they are this picky because in Vietnamese culture, food is not only a matter of survival or sensory pleasure but eating is considered as external sign of good education and culture.

The personality of a person transpires through his food and with someone we just met we can only identify him through his clothing, speech or gestures. To gain a deeper understanding of his personality, habits and lifestyle, it is necessary to know more about his diet.

Also, as is the same as in Eastern medicine Vietnamese people pay close attention to the balance of their cuisine to ensure good health:

Hot or cold, salty or sweet, spicy or refreshing, everything is a matter of Yin and Yang, of balance and if balance is respected, your body will not have to worry much about diseases. Therefore, the Vietnamese kitchen is considered as a small hospital for the family.

In a traditional family, the role of the woman is very important as she is the one creating such delicious food every day. For her Vietnamese family she does not only cook food but she is also showing that she is caring for the ones she loves. Once everything is ready, everybody gathers around the meal and at that moment the whole family is united and share this happy moment together.

As you can see, eating in Vietnam is not only delicious it is also a way to learn about the traditions, the culture and the life of local people and it can make your holiday more insightful.

Người Việt có thói quen sử dụng rất nhiều rau tươi trong bữa ăn hàng ngày. Điển hình như món lẩu mắm, đặc sản của miền Tây, ăn kèm với 36 loại rau khác nhau mà phong phú nhất là mùa nước lũ.

Món ăn miền Nam thường ngọt và cay hơn món ăn miền Bắc nhưng không quá cay như món Thái. Nguyên liệu chính không thể thiếu trong ẩm thực Việt chính là nước mắm. Herring salad is not only a specialty food in Vietnam but also takes culinary pride by the people in Phu Quoc where this little fish is very plentiful and a common catch for the local fishermen.

The locals because of its affordability created this salad and also it’s so easy to prepare, definitely a must-try dish when coming to Phu Quoc Island!

You can either eat Herring salad as an appetiser or simply on it’s own and for myself it is particularly refreshing a snack during the hot afternoon hours.

All of the ingredients described below can be easily found at the local town market in Duong Dong town.How to make it

Beautifully filleted, fresh Herring is thinly sliced, mixed with lime juice, chilli, chopped onions, ginger accompanied

with shredded coconut which is then wrapped in rice paper (quickly dipped in water to soften it) and loaded with

fresh herbs, lettuce and vertically sliced cucumber.

Now for the sauce, this has many various combinations but this is the one I like!Start with pepper, garlic, a little sugar, lime, roasted peanuts all mixed in with the famous Phu Quoc fish sauce

and VOILA you are ready to roll!Often Herring salad is accompanied by the locally produced Sim wine (also known as Ruou Sim or Rose Myrtle

wine, the berries are similar to blackcurrants).This is made by fermenting this local fruit from the Rose Myrtle tree (Rhodomyrtus Tomentosa Myrtaceae), blended

with sugar then bottled with an alcohol content of 7.5%.Just roll it up and dip in the sauce along with a sip of the Sim wine to create a simple but tasty combination.

So there you go, while most Vietnamese dished are more complex and take a kitchen to make them, this is one that with a little adventure at the local market and some bench space for preparation is all you need to wrap & roll!

How much is this?


Famous for and blessed with abundant export quality seafood, Phu Quoc also produces world-class fish

sauce and pepper, so much so it’s become a thriving industry.

In more recent years other cottage industries have also popped up producing many products locally such as sim berry, rice & herb wine, honey, draught beer, organic salads and vegetables just to name a few.

The top products of the Island though are certainly the Fish Sauce and Pepper.

Whilst you can't take the fish sauce with you by air (it costs a lot of money to fumigate a plane from just one sauce spillage!) you should not forget to purchase some pepper to take home!

It took me a long time to come to grips with it, usually flaunted under my nose and just the smell alone, there was no way I was going to taste this stuff.

One day though I took the plunge without the thought of a sniff. You know what it was amazing and from that day on fish sauce become a part of my daily diet!

The French champagne of fish sauces – it’s intense, it’s rich, and comes from perhaps the most famous region in the world for fish sauce, yes I am talking about Phu Quoc Island!

Success of its world-class quality is partly due to the local seawater, which is rich in plankton and nutrients that nourish the growth of the anchovies, the main ingredient of the sauce.

Phu Quoc fish sauce is made from these freshly caught anchovies then fermented in wooden barrels for 1 year while blended with salt to

develop intense aromatic flavors, before being filtered and bottled for distribution.

Once dried, they are then packaged and ready to go, most of the pepper farms you can visit will sell their product directly to you or you can find many stores in town selling local pepper.

When peppercorns are ripe, they are collected and divided into 3 kinds:

Black pepper (most common), White pepper and Red pepper after picked are set for drying in the sun usually on a straw mat near to the family home.

ENVIRONMENTAL FEATURE

On June 7, 2020, WWF held a zero-waste lifestyle seminar at Phu Quoc Bee Farm.All participants who shared the same interest in sustainable farming and environmental protection decided to form a club. The Phu Quoc Sustainable Agriculture Club officially held the first meeting on June 14 with about 10 members sharing the various applications of indigenous microorganisms (IMO) in life.Up to now, the club has 79 members who interact regularly through the zalo group and weekly discussions.The club focuses on the application of biotechnology in sustainable farming, maintaining the soil and water resources of the island. The main activities of the club • Organizing seminars to raise awareness about the application of IMO in waste treatment and organic farming. • Researching and utilizing IMO to turn organic waste into fertilizers. • Researching and applying IMO to livestock to remove antibiotic residues, and minimize its pollution. • Building Community gardens to spread the green lifestyle by promoting IMO in composting and growing organic vegetables for the locals. Upcoming club activities • Keeping on sharing the numerous benefits of IMO with the community. • Assisting local schools in handling sewers and toilet odors. • Implementing waste separation project, applying IMO to treat organic waste as microbiological fertilizer for community vegetable gardens.

Đảo Phú Quốc rất đa dạng các loại Ngày 7/6/2020, nhân buổi hội thảo chia sẻ về lối sống không rác thải do WWF tổ chức tại Phu Quoc Bee Farm, các anh chị quan tâm đến nông nghiệp và môi trường lâu nay đã ngồi lại thảo luận và quyết định ra đời một câu lạc bộ tập hợp các thành viên có cùng sự quan tâm về việc bảo vệ môi trường và canh tác theo hướng bền vững. Câu lạc bộ Nông nghiệp bền vững Phú Quốc chính thức sinh hoạt buổi đầu tiên ngày 14/06 với khoảng 10 thành viên chia sẻ về vi sinh vật bản địa và những ứng dụng trong đời sống. OUR PEOPLE

At a very young age I found myself living on the streets of Uganda’s capital city Kampala, this was not because my parents didn’t love me but because they weren’t even able to provide even the basics for me let alone my other three siblings.

I started out by selling trinkets in the hope it could at least get me my next meal but some days I just had to go without eating, this is when I discovered a local church that gave porridge to needy people like myself and I soon became a regular.

Everyday I was there at 10am eager for my daily sustenance!

During these difficult times I also learnt the bible and through the church was helped to understand the correct way to behave in society with manners and respect.

Some years earlier I had learnt to ride the unicycle, this was so much fun for me, and now everyday I practiced and practiced hard with the unicycle and learnt many other performance tricks.

During a volunteer day helping at the church I was so lucky to meet Ilkka and Seija Laine from Finland who took my plight upon them by supporting me through the Nsambya full gospel church along with pastor Paul Kinatama, thanks to them I was able to complete my education.

At the same time as studying I worked loading luggage at a local bus station for $1 a day until the company offered me to work there as a mechanical engineer, I remained there for 7 years and left

just before finishing High School.My lucky break amongst the

hardshipI really knew fixing buses wasn’t

really my dream or passion; this is when I joined a group known as “Famous Friend Acrobatics” and meeting Henry & Santos, meeting them was certainly THE turning point of my life!

I started practicing at 5am-10am everyday, get to the Church for some porridge and after resting at 3pm in the afternoons walked 15 km each way to attend training with “Famous Friend Acrobatics” working so hard to hone my performance skills little by little.

Then my first big break, working with “Clowns without Borders” a Swedish not for profit that spread fun and laughter through the orphanages and refugee camps of neighboring Rwanda, I was paid $23 per day and the first time in my life I actually had something which could help me as well as my family back in Kampala.

So now I was performing all over Uganda and loving the life of entertaining, making people smile and laugh gave me a real kick, this always revitalized me for my next performance!

Now via my growing list of industry contacts I managed to secure a 1-year contract in Taiwan where I had so much fun while at the same time providing awesome entertainment much to the customers satisfaction.

Once the contract in Taiwan finished I returned to Uganda and by now Henry & Santos

were in Vietnam and prepared to help me get there, now all of a sudden I could’t think anything else but Vietnam, why not I said and off I went into the mystery that was to become.

Well here I am!After some efforts I finally

entered into Vietnam but not without sponsorship from Asim @ Mandala Beach Club where I started working performing fire-shows in the beautiful island of Phu Quoc, who would have thought I ended up here!

My year on this island has been amazing, not only has it given me more opportunity to create fun for people but also my chance to know better the Vietnamese locals who have been very kind to me right from the very beginning of this wonderful journey.

The Phu Quoc Chamber of Commerce and their kind support has also given me the opportunity to connect to the community making friends and working acquaintances, to them I am so grateful.

My story is one of hardship but also my inspiration and the motivation to be someone in life, to that end so far I am very proud of myself, thanks for reading!

From Uganda to Vietnam!Tough times to Island paradise

Khi còn nhỏ, tôi sống bám vào đường phố của thủ đô Kampala, Uganda. Không phải vì bố mẹ tôi không yêu thương đứa con của mình mà vì nhà quá nghèo, họ không thể nào tìm đủ thức ăn cho tôi và 03 anh chị em khác của tôi.

Tôi gia nhập đội quân trẻ em lang thang đường phố với công việc bán đồ lặt vặt mong kiếm ít tiền để mua đủ thức ăn cho mình. Vậy mà có ngày tôi chẳng có thứ gì để bỏ vào miệng mình. Dịp tình cờ, tôi phát hiện ra một nhà thờ địa phương cấp phát cháo miễn phí cho những người nghèo. Và bạn biết đấy, tôi nhanh chóng trở thành “khách hàng” thân thiết tại đây.

Mỗi ngày, tôi đều có mặt ở đó lúc 10 giờ sáng, háo hức đợi chờ bữa ăn của mình! Trong khoảng thời gian khó khăn này, tôi đã học kinh thánh và thông qua nhà thờ, tôi đã học cách tôn trọng mọi người, cách ứng xử đúng đắn trong xã hội.

Vài năm trước đó, tôi tự học đi xe đạp một bánh. Tôi tìm thấy được sự hứng thú với trò mạo hiểm này. Tôi đã luyện tập chăm chỉ và tranh thủ học thêm nhiều thủ thuật biểu diễn khác.

Trong một ngày tình nguyện tại nhà thờ, tôi thật may mắn khi gặp Ilkka và Seija Laine đến từ Phần Lan. Họ đã giúp tôi hoàn thành việc học hành của mình thông qua mục sư Paul Kinatama.

Trong khoảng thời gian ấy, tôi vừa học, vừa làm công việc bốc xếp hành lý tại một bến xe buýt địa

phương với mức lương 1 đô la một ngày. Sau đó, công ty đề nghị tôi làm việc với tư cách là một thợ cơ khí, tôi đã cặm cụi làm việc ở đó 7 năm cho đến khi học xong trung học.

Cơ hội may mắn giữa những khó khăn!

Việc sửa chữa xe buýt mang lại tiền để tôi trang trải cuộc sống nhưng nó không thực sự là ước mơ hay đam mê của tôi cho đến khi tôi gặp Henry & Santos rồi tham gia một nhóm "Những người bạn nhào lộn". Đây thật sự là bước ngoặt của cuộc đời tôi!

Tôi bắt đầu luyện tập lúc 5 giờ đến 10 giờ sáng hàng ngày, xong lại đến nhà thờ ăn cháo. Buổi chiều, tôi đi bộ 15km để tham gia khóa huấn luyện với “Người bạn nổi tiếng nhào lộn”. Tôi chăm chỉ trau dồi kỹ năng biểu diễn của mình.

Sau đó, một cơ hội lớn đối đến với tôi là được mời làm việc trong chương trình "Những chú hề không biên giới", do một người Thụy Điển sáng lập với mục đích phi lợi nhuận, mang đến niềm vui và tiếng cười cho các trại trẻ mồ côi và trại tị nạn ở đất nước Rwanda. Khi tham gia biểu diễn trong chương trình này, tôi được trả 23 đô la mỗi ngày và lần đầu tiên trong đời tôi thực sự có một thứ gì đó để phụ giúp gia đình mình ở thủ đô Kampala.

Tôi đã có cơ hội biểu diễn trên khắp đất nước Uganda và yêu thích hơn cuộc sống giải trí. Việc mang đến cho mọi người những tiếng cười vui vẻ là điều khích lệ vô cùng lớn để tôi có thêm động lực cho những buổi biểu diễn tiếp theo.

Tích cực tập luyện và mở rộng quan hệ, tôi đã may mắn ký được hợp đồng đến Đài Loan biểu diễn trong 1 năm. Tại đây, tôi đã có rất nhiều niềm vui khi cung cấp dịch vụ giải trí tuyệt vời cho mọi người.

Sau khi hợp đồng ở Đài Loan kết thúc, tôi trở về Uganda và lúc này Henry & Santos trong nhóm “Những người bạn nhào lộn” đã sang Việt Nam biểu diễn. Họ kêu tôi đến Việt Nam và giúp tôi có cơ hội trình diễn. Tôi nghĩ tại sao lại không nhỉ và điều kỳ diệu đã xảy ra.

Vâng, tôi đang ở đây!Sau nhiều nổ lực, cuối cùng tôi

cũng đã vào được Việt Nam với sự hỗ trợ của Câu lạc bộ bãi biển Asim @ Mandala, nơi tôi bắt đầu làm việc để biểu diễn các chương trình múa lửa tại hòn đảo xinh đẹp Phú Quốc. Ai mà ngờ tôi lại đến hòn đảo xa xôi này!

Năm đầu tiên của tôi tại Phú Quốc thật tuyệt vời. Nó không chỉ cho tôi nhiều cơ hội hơn để tạo niềm vui cho mọi người mà còn là cơ hội để tôi hiểu biết nhiều hơn về người Việt Nam, những người đã rất tốt với tôi ngay từ những ngày đầu của cuộc hành trình tuyệt vời này.

Tôi rất biết ơn các bạn ở Phu Quoc Cham. Họ hỗ trợ tôi tận tình, cho tôi cơ hội đến trình diễn và làm bạn với những người đang sinh sống tại đây.

Dù đã trải qua một tuổi thơ cơ cực, từng là một cậu bé đường phố nhưng nó chính là động lực để tôi vươn lên trong cuộc sống này, sống có ích và mang niềm vui đến cho mọi người. Tôi luôn tự hào về bản thân mình. Cảm ơn bạn đã đọc câu chuyện của một người nghệ sĩ đến từ đất nước Uganda xa xôi.

It wasn’t all that long ago that this route was described as “adventurous”, in fact I can remember a time when the rims of my trusty Minsk were filled up in 1 meter of mud but as usually in these situations and remote as I was there was always a couple of locals not far away seemingly sitting there waiting just to give me a hand!

These days however, what was the “adventurous route” has become now the “scenic route” with beautifully paved roads that make the going that much more enjoyable than getting stuck in the mud.

For this journey we assume you are starting from the Duong Dong Town/Long Beach Area, which is where you will start and finish the day, if it suits you better you can always do the below itinerary in reverse;

Get a good breakfast down and try to get going about 8am making the first stage to Ham Ninh fishing village, follow the main road all the way to the center.

This is just a simple little town with a lively local market that’s best visited now on the way through before the heat of the day catches the lovely fresh produce off guard. Pass by the local shops selling all types of shells, which

I don’t recommend you buying; there will also be an array of all different kinds of natural herbs, which I do recommend you buying!

At the end of the main road take a walk out to the end of the pier, you will see some local seafood places as you walk along, if you’re running a bit late and its near lunch time the are a good option for a fresh seafood chow down (make sure what you select is what they actually cook!)

Once your are done at the pier head back along the main road until you reach the first turnoff to the right (heading north), now your on the scenic route that hugs the north east coast through coastal Cay Sao and up to Bai Thom right at the top of the island.

Cruise along and enjoy the scenery, at first you will notice your getting closer to the sea and then as you go along further the mountains of your left seem to become more the focus of attention.

By now you must be ready for a rest and perhaps lunch stop only, I am guessing that only a few kms further now and you will reach Rory’s Wreck.

Set on the beach this huge restaurant and beach bar is a replica of a shipwreck, serving beverages and pub food that is

worth taking a bite (try their pizza!) they even have mini golf and an ocean pool if you would like to get wet!

Now that you are refreshed its ready to take the last leg up of the journey to Bai Thom and discover the “Secret Farm” with Owner Mr Sweet and see his newly established free roaming organic farm.

Here you can discover many varieties of plants that are grown organically such as Pepper, Corn, Banana, Mango, Lemon Grass, Sim Berry, Cashew, Coconut and a cool Hammock area, they also have many outdoor activities including cooking classes, camping, BBQ parties and tree planting tours.

Once your finished discovering the farm it’s a straight run south down the center of the island cutting through the Phu Quoc National Park until you reach your destination, the town of Duong Dong.

From Duong Dong head east for 12 km to Ham Ninh, then from Ham Ninh 30 km north to Bai Thom and then a 28 km trip heading south back to Duong Dong, takes approx. 4-6 hours.

spaces amongst incredibly beautiful scenery.

Cách đây không lâu, tuyến đường này được mô tả là “con đường phiêu lưu”. Tôi nhớ có lần mình đi đến đây vào mùa mưa trên chiếc xe Minsk, có đoạn xe lún xuống bùn cả mét nhưng lúc nào cũng gặp được một vài người dân địa phương nhiệt tình giúp đỡ.

Giờ đây, con đường bùn lầy này đã trở thành con đường trải nhựa đẹp mắt, khiến cho việc đi lại trở nên vô cùng dễ dàng và thú vị để bạn ngắm cảnh.

Đối với hành trình này, bạn bắt đầu từ Khu vực thị trấn Dương Đông / khu Long Beach, đi một vòng khám phá Đông đảo rồi trở về lại thị trấn.

Sau bữa sáng, bạn hãy xuất phát đến thăm làng chài Hàm Ninh, đi theo con đường chính chỗ vòng xoay Eden resort.

Trước khi đến làng chài, bạn ghé thăm chợ Hàm Ninh, nơi có nhiều quầy hàng bán các sản vật quà lưu niệm từ biển như sò, ốc,… (theo tôi bạn không nên mua nhất là các loại sao biển và san hô chết

khô để góp phần ngăn chặn việc tàn phá môi trường biển). Ở đây cũng có bán các thảo dược được khai thác ở dãy núi Hàm Ninh. Đi đến cuối đường, bạn có thể ra thăm cầu tàu Hàm Ninh, ghé qua các nhà hàng để thưởng thức hải sản tươi sống vừa được ngư dân đánh bắt lên. Hãy thưởng thức món ghẹ Hàm Ninh chắc thịt nổi tiếng khi bạn thăm nơi này.

Sau khi thăm làng chài, bạn hãy quay lại đường chính rồi rẽ phải, hướng lên phía Đông Bắc để đến biển Cây Sao và Bãi Thơm. Chạy xe dọc con đường này, bạn sẽ tận hưởng những khung cảnh vô cùng thú vị, một bên là rừng nguyên sinh, một bên là bãi biển xanh ngắt.

Nếu muốn ăn trưa và tìm chỗ nghĩ ngơi, bạn hãy thử ghé qua nhà hàng Rory’s Wreck

Đây là nhà hàng và quán bar trên một bãi biển rộng lớn, phục vụ cả ăn uống, đừng quên thử món pizza của họ. Nhà hàng còn có một sân golf mini và hồ bơi để bạn thư giãn !

Sau khi khám phá nơi này, bạn tiếp tục hành trình lên Bãi Thơm, ghé thăm trang trại mới thành lập của anh bạn trẻ Ngọt Danh. Tại đây, bạn có thể khám phá nhiều loại cây được trồng hữu cơ như Tiêu, Chuối, Xoài, Sả, Sim rừng, điều lộn hột, …. Bạn có thể thả mình trên những chiếc võng dưới tán cây hay tham gia vào các hoạt động thú vị tại đây như lớp học nấu ăn, cắm trại, tiệc BBQ hoặc học cách trồng cây với anh bạn trẻ này.

What started out as a much needed meeting point for a few of us locals over the years has certainly become the go-to event every month!From its inauguration in 2015 at La Veranda Resort the Phu Quoc Chamber of Commerce AKA Phu Quoc Cham was attracting a couple of dozen main stayers of the island for the first year, we had lots of fun but it seemed like it was the same crowd every month!Even getting somewhere to host the event each and every month was a regular challenge taking significant arm-twisting, after about a year we could see it working and people were having fun too!So now the challenge became issues like having enough name tags for each event to pin on the constant flow of “newbies” attending or which host will it be in the months to come.Local businesses starting getting involved and participating more, promoting their products and services to the attendees of which numbers were now growing rapidly.We needed to inject entertainment, so we approached local musicians, dancers, fire-eaters, anyone that had any sort of talent they wanted to share as a way of promoting

themselves.Up until this point all of this was free to those that attended which is when we decided to look at supporting local charities.That’s when TOKI TOKI came along, a small organization founded by a German fellow named Karsten who’s idea was to help the personal development of local kids who normally plied the street selling lottery tickets to support their families.TOKI TOKI would man the entrance to each event and collect 100,000vnd entry donations from our members; it paid their rent every month!

These days its not unusual to get 200 members attending and over 20 million vnd collected for TOKI TOKI, not bad for something that started as a meeting point!

được thành lập bởi anh Karsten, một

It's good to know Banks and ATMs

There are lots of banks in Duong Dong and over the counter transactions or ATMs can be easily found in and around town, once out of town there are not too many options so make sure when heading out for a day trip that you are cashed up!

Sacombank are by far the best for ‘over the counter’ transactions but all banks will accept Visa, MasterCard and AMEX, be sure to bring your ID card or passport along as you will need ID.

Bank Opening hours 7.30am-11.30am & 1.30pm-5.30pm.

Most overseas visitors find ATMs are the most convenient and affordable ways to access cash and in Duong Dong town or along Tran Hung Dao St on the way out of town they can be found easily.

For money transfers try Western Union at the Kien Long Bank at 139 30/4 street OR Agribank at the corner of Tran Hung Dao and 30/4 street.
