As nature begins to awaken and stretches out her days, we are opened to the changes from autumn

and a rebirth from the winter cold. The morning’s golden light will begin to nourish

the landscape and we will see life welcome spring as it reaches for the blue skies. The opportunity to liven up and add color to the neighborhood by adding some shrubs, installing some groundcover or accenting our yards is upon us. This is a great

Spring Planting of Trees and Shrubs

March is a great time to install new trees and shrubs to update your landscape. Installing new plant material in the spring will give the material time to acclimate itself

before the extreme summer temperatures arrive.

When selecting your new plant material be sure to measure the planting site before making your plant selections. It is important to choose species that will fit the site and your expectations from the day of install and years to come.

Your new plant material will require more water as it is getting established. The plants will let you know when they are not getting enough water, the leaves will wilt or curl and a loss of color are signs of stress.

Care to know: Pruning newly planted trees and shrubs is not recommended and may lead to losing the material. It is best to wait until the second or third year to prune. If needed, removing dead wood or cross branching can be completed.

Easter Basket Pudding cups By Vanessa Rodriguez Coppola of www.SeeVanessaCraft.com

Make Easter that much more fun for your children with these edible Easter baskets! Kids can help make their own special snack. Use pre-made pudding cups or

make your own pudding and put it in little mason jars. This would also make for a fun classroom party or playdate activity.

INGREDIENTS• pudding cups• licorice• candy grass• jelly beans

DIRECTIONSStep 1: Open the pudding cups and fill the top with candy grass, which you can find in the seasonal section at most stores. You can use kitchen scissors to cut the candy grass into little pieces.

Step 2: Place a licorice stick in each Snack Pack, as shown in the photo, to look like a basket handle.

Step 3: Place jelly beans on top of the candy grass. Enjoy!

S tate testing is just around the corner! Last year our students took the AzMERIT in reading, writing, and math. That will

remain the same, however, this year the tests will be completed on computers. Below are

some initial dates and information that may help you to prepare your child for the assessments.

The testing window is March 28-May 6. A school schedule is being completed and specific dates for each grade level will be communicated in the near future.

4th and 8th grade students will still take the AIMS Science test and that will be administered on March 29. Please make sure you don’t schedule any appointments that day for students in 4th and 8th grade.

As we move from paper based to computer based testing, it will be extremely beneficial to expose your child to word processing to help prepare for the writing portion of the assessment. If you have the opportunity to let him/her type something on the computer rather than write it, I would encourage you to do that if they haven’t had that experience. This generally applies to

a Preview of the 2016 Varsity Baseball SeasonBy Christopher Le

Expectations are always high at Liberty High School. A year after falling just short of the Division I State title, Liberty

is reloading for another title run. Led by third year Head Coach Jonn Freitas, a former ASU/

Padres player, the Lions are looking to recover from the loss of several star players. Tyler Wyatt, Rudy Karre, Spiro Valaskos, Kyler Murphy and Hunter Morris are just a few of the impactful senior departures.

Wyatt, who left to play for Grand Canyon University, was also the star quarterback for Liberty’s Division II football state title run. He’s been starting for the Varsity Baseball squad since he was a freshman. Freitas, in an interview last year with AZCentral, said “[Wyatt] helped put us on the map. What he’s meant to the entire athletic program has been tremendous.” Karre, who also started with Wyatt since his freshman year, finished his high school baseball career as a top-flight prospect, getting recruited to join the Kansas Jayhawks baseball squad. Obviously, replacing this crop of players will prove to be one of the most significant challenges of the season.

In an interview with YourWestValley.com, Freitas said “I know we had a lot of seniors but the cupboard’s not going to be completely bare.” Players to watch this season are returning hitters like Patrick ‘Ricky’ Tuita, Cody Hulbert, and Nick Hamilton. They’ll be joined by players from Freshman and JV squads that combined for a total of only 5 losses last season.

The season starts on February 26 at St. Mary’s in Phoenix. Every game is important, but there are a few games that should be circled on your calendar if you’re a fan of the Lions.

Liberty and Centennial always seem to have exhilarating matchups and they’ll get the chance to face off twice—once at Centennial on April 4th and again at Liberty on April 13th.

Beyond that, games against Sunrise Mountain—in any sport—are always a treat. This spring, Liberty will face off against their rivals at Sunrise Mountain on April 15th. According to MaxPreps, across all Varsity sports, the Lions have a 28-24 all-time record against the Mustangs.

Note: This article was written in late January. By the time of publication, the baseball season will have already begun.

Silverhawk Takes First Place in MLK Poster contest

Lake Pleasant’s very own eighth grader, Kira Walton, was named first place winner of the 2016 Arizona State University Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Poster contest, in the

Middle School division.

As part of the contest, Kira had to design a picture that illustrates what leadership through service means to her. Featured as part of her artwork is a quote from Martin Luther King, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is what are you doing for others?” Kira chose this quote because it shows anyone can go out there and make a difference in our society. Kira commented, “It was great to experience my very first art contest. It has motivated me to want to compete in more art contests in the future.”:

Art teacher, Mrs. Kelsey Speirs, submitted the artwork created by these students in their classroom. The students’ artwork will continue to

be displayed at the city hall through May.

T he Waste Management Phoenix Open is always such an inspiring event to have right in here in the Valley. If

you had the chance to watch the Tour pros in person, or maybe view the tournament on TV from the comfort of your own home, you’ll see each player displays phenomenal balance and tempo with their driver.

It may be hard to emulate their swings exactly, but there are aspects which you can focus on to improve your accuracy and distance from the tee.

Firstly, the driver setup and ball position are incredibly important. The ball position should be far enough forward to accommodate an upward path to the ball. Favor the ball more forward, towards your lead leg. As the ball moves forward in our stance our shoulders should naturally tilt to mirror the launch of the ball. The hands should also hang free from the shoulders, do not push them ahead of the ball. They will appear to be a lot more neutral the more the ball moves forward. Favor a little weight on the back leg to help get behind the ball. The ball should be teed up at least half way over the crown of the club. This will help to promote the upward path to the ball. You cannot tee it up too high!

The Waste Management Phoenix Open

By Scott Foster, Head of Instruction & Player Development

When we have established a good setup position we are trying to hold that position through impact. Once the club reaches the top of the swing try not to push into the ball, think of turning. This will allow the club to return to the ball on a shallow path. We are trying to get our shoulders back to the position they were at during address.

There are a few clues to look for to help identify if you are hitting down on the driver including, broken tees; the ball popping straight up or you have scuff marks on the top of your club. Similarly, if you are hitting over the ball you will see a low or “topped” ball flight.

When it comes to the swing tempo, try to stay within yourself and swing only as hard and quick as your balance will allow.

Happy driving, from all of us at the Trilogy Golf Club at Vistancia.

Planning for Northern Peoria’s Future

There’s no doubt that northern Peoria has seen the majority of the city’s growth over the past two decades. Smart and careful planning as we navigate future growth involves examining water management, environmental impact and the efficient use of resources now and anticipating needs into the future. We are working to bring commercial and retail development to residents that

makes sense for the northern Peoria lifestyle and environment. Vistancia communi-ty’s 487-acre mixed-use core area will integrate employment, retail, recreational and residential uses in a biking and walking-friendly environment.  The future Lake Pleasant Heights and Saddleback Heights developments cover

more than 14 square miles. Each is designed to have mixed-use cores that will provide residents with a variety of employment, shopping entertainment, and recre-ational opportunities allowing residents to live, work, and play closer to home.

Spring is in the Air

Our amazing Peoria quality of life really shines in the spring with many outdoor amenities for residents and visitors. Top of the list is the award-winning spring train-ing complex, home to the Seattle Mariners and San Diego Padres. The Sports Com-plex continues to work to make the first-class fan experience even better, and new this year to the ballpark is a 3,300 square-foot private meeting room and patio right on third base. Businesses or private parties can conduct a meeting or reception and watch a game at the same time. For tickets, special promotions and deals, visit www.peoriaspringtraining.com. Peoria residents and business owners are encouraged to get a behind-the-scenes

look at the operations of city government through the Peoria Leadership Institute beginning in April. Class participants will attend an eight-week series that will cover various departments. Graduates of the free class are recognized at a city council meeting in June. Applications are currently being accepted from participants must be 16 years or older, a resident of Peoria or a business owner in the city. Register online at www.peoriaaz.gov/pli or call Daniel Murillo at 629-773-7281. Learn more about water conservation in the home, proper landscape irrigation,

recycling, composting, energy efficiency and more through Sustainable U, which is one of many sustainability initiatives led by the city to provide residents with practi-cal educational tools. Many of the workshops are free and on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Mesquite District Update

The future is always in mind as we work to grow Peoria. As I assume my new role as Vice Mayor, an important focus for me is making sure people feel safe in their neighborhoods. Recently, I, along with Chief Roy Minter and North Precinct Commander Bruce Walls, met with Mesquite District residents at Trilogy’s weekly Coffee Talk to discuss community policing efforts and keeping crime rates low in northern Peoria. This flow of communication with citizens is key to ensure the city grows in a way that meets citizens’ needs.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve you. Together, we can build the city you want and deserve.

I ran across the following article on-line and felt it was important to remind our community members on how to be a

good witness.

If you see a crime in progress, call 911. If possible, and without endangering yourself, continue to monitor any activity you can observe. A police dispatcher will answer 911 and will ask a series of questions relating to the activity you’re witnessing. The dispatcher may let you know when an officer has arrived on the scene. If the suspect(s) leave before you see police officers, tell the dispatcher and let them know the direction and method of travel. When you call to report a crime in progress, the type of information that the dispatcher will likely ask you to supply will include the following:

Suspects:

• Sex (male, female)• Race – Ethnicity (White, Asian, Middle Eastern, Hispanic,

African-American)• Height – Sometimes it may be hard to give a height on a

subject. If possible, use a vertical object to compare the subject’s height with. Officers can later look at this object and determine a height.

• Weight/Build – Slim, Heavy, Muscular, etc.• Hair – Color and style of hair (Blond, brown etc. and short,

long, curly etc.)• Facial Features – clean shaven, mustache, beard, etc.• Clothing description – type and color of shirt (short sleeve,

long sleeve, striped solid) and pants (jeans, long shorts, etc).• Any other unusual characteristics or distinguishing features of

the subject (tattoos, scars, glasses, etc).• Suspects Vehicle:• Vehicle Make- Chevrolet, Ford• Model – Mustang, Impala, etc.• Vehicle Style – 2 door, 4 door, wagon, hatchback, SUV• Vehicle Color• Vehicle License Plate• Any identifiable marks (vehicle body damage possibly from old

car accident), bumper stickers, custom rims, spoiler, etc.

Remember your safety comes first! Don’t be afraid to call the police department. Crime Prevention is everyone’s responsibility – you are our extra eyes and ears on the street. With your help, we can keep our community safe.

Remember to close your garage doors, secure your valuables and lock your vehicles. The Peoria Police Department non-emergency number is 623-773-8311.
