Volunteer with us! Courtenay Recreation has gradually resumed programs and services, thanks to all those in our community who have received their vaccinations and paved the way for this careful and safe return to pre-pandemic activities. All Courtenay Recreation activities closely follow current Provincial Health Officer Orders. With the resumption of programs comes an even greater need for volunteers. Interested in crafts, sports, or special events? There’s a volunteer opportunity for that. If you would like to support your community by joining our team, please visit www.courtenay.ca/volunteer to learn more.Deep gratitude goes out to our patrons for their understanding as services continue to evolve and adapt - and of course a huge thank you to staff, instructors, and volunteers for continuing to go above and beyond to maintain the programs and facilities we know and love.

What does it mean to be physically literate?Being physically literate means being competent and confident in a variety of different move-ments over a variety of different environments. Children should not be specializing in one or two sports. In fact, they should be do-ing the exact opposite! By getting experience trying as many differ-ent types of sport and physical activity as possible, they improve their overall physical literacy and increase their chances of success in any given area. If your child wants to thrive in one sport, the best thing they can do is try as many as possible!

YOGA FOR MEN OVER 50(who never thought they’d do Yoga)(50 years & over)You’ve seen the pictures of wom-en in pretzel poses, and you’ve thought, “No Yoga for me, thanks.” But maybe for years, your wife or female friends have been telling you how much you’d benefit from Yoga. This class is just for men over 50 who are new to Yoga. You’ll be in the same boat as everyone else as you gradually increase your flexibility. You’ll also learn some breathing techniques that reduce stress. As the weeks progress, you might find that you’re less prone to injuries at work or at leisure, and that you recover faster from exertion. No class February 21.Instructor: Catherine Reid#8859 Mondays

YIN YOGAYin yoga is a deep and peaceful practice using sustained, passive holds. Yin yoga is designed to target deeper connective tissues, fascia, and joints to improve your overall mobility and range of motion. This practice is the perfect complement to the more active Yang lifestyles we lead. Yin Yoga provides a greater sense of bal-ance, peace and calm. This is an all-levels class, and is appropriate for those new to yoga. No class March 12.Instructor: Wendy Davies#8867 Saturdays

YIN YOGA: POWER IN STILLNESSAre you on a fast train? Ready to get off and breathe? In Yin Yoga, you will enter poses - mostly on the floor - and stay a while observ-ing strong sensations, while allow-ing your breath to help you access deeper layers of dense connective tissue, like ligaments, tendons, and fascia. The long-held, passive poses will help you become more flexible, with juicier joints and better functioning organs. You might become calmer, and better able to focus: a gift in our world of constant distraction. Yin Yoga is an excellent complement to other forms of Yoga. Come home to your body in a profound and satisfying way.Instructor: Catherine Reid#8868 Fridays

January 7 - April 1 10:30 am - 12:00 pm Lewis MP Hall $169/13

Variations offered allowing you the freedom to de-cide what suits your yoga practice, and to deepen your understand-ing of the postures, breathing and relaxation techniques. Previous yoga practice is helpful but not necessary; all levels welcome.Instructor: Wendy Davies#8875 Wednesdays

Glen Urquhart CreekRehabilitationA rehabilitation project has been completed in the heart of a residential neighbourhood in east Courtenay.

Glen Urquhart Creek is an approximately 6-kilometre long stream with tributaries flowing through and around the Valley View neighbourhood, draining from this urban environment into agricultural lands before reaching the K’omoks Estuary.

The rehabilitation work focused on the section of the creek upstream of Thorpe Avenue and behind Finch Place with the goal of improving fish habitat and enhancing the riparian area. The placement of instream and shoreline structures, along with creation of rock riffles in the creek channel will help contribute to stabilizing the creek bank and footpath, increasing water quality and improving instream aquatic insect complexity.

Courtenay Recreation coordinates the use of all parks and school playing fields located in the City of Courtenay.

Field Closures: Fields may be closed due to weather conditions. We would appreciate your cooperation in not using the fields during these times.

Courtenay Recreation also books the Artificial Turf Field located at GP Vanier. Please note that only limited spaces are available.
