Introduction to the Day

To preserve life. Despite all that Joseph had gone

through, from being sold into slavery, falsely

accused and imprisoned, forgotten – even by

someone he befriended – Joseph could see God’s

hand through it all.

To preserve life. The Canaanite woman in today’s

gospel is a Gentile, an outsider, who is unflinching in

her request that Jesus heal her daughter. Her

unrelenting faith eventually got Jesus’ attention and

her daughter was healed.

In our gathering today, we are reminded that the

story of God is a story of life – of preserving life.

1. Light of the world

You stepped down into darkness

Opened my eyes let me see

Beauty that made

This heart adore You

Hope of a life spent with You

Chorus

So here I am to worship

Here I am to bow down

Here I am to say

that You're my God

You're altogether lovely

Altogether worthy

Altogether wonderful to me

2. King of all days

Oh so highly exalted

Glorious in heaven above

Humbly You came

To the earth You created

All for love's sake became poor

To see my sin upon that cross

And I'll never know how much it cost

To see my sin upon that cross

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Please stand as you are able

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, who forgives

all our sin, whose mercy endures forever.

Amen.

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all

desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid:

cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration

of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you

and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus

Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of

one another.

Gracious God,

have mercy on us. We confess that we have

turned from you and given ourselves into the

power of sin. We are truly sorry and humbly

repent. In your compassion forgive us our

sins, known and unknown, things we have

done and things we have failed to do. Turn us

again to you, and uphold us by your Spirit, so

that we may live and serve you in newness of

life through Jesus Christ, our Savior and

Lord.

Amen.

God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we

were dead in sin, and made us alive together with

Christ. By grace you have been saved. In the name

of + Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. Almighty

God strengthen you with power through the Holy

Spirit, that Christ may live in your hearts through

faith.

Amen.

GREETING

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God,

and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you

all.

And also with you.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Let us pray.

God of all peoples, your arms reach out to embrace

all those who call upon you. Teach us as disciples of

your Son to love the world with compassion and

constancy, that your name may be known throughout

the earth, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

Amen.

FIRST READING: Genesis 45:1-15

A reading from Genesis.

Joseph could no longer control himself before all those

who stood by him, and he cried out, “Send everyone

away from me.” So no one stayed with him when

Joseph made himself known to his brothers.

And he wept so loudly that the Egyptians heard it, and

the household of Pharaoh heard it. Joseph said to his

brothers, “I am Joseph. Is my father still alive?” But his

brothers could not answer him, so dismayed were they

at his presence.

Then Joseph said to his brothers, “Come closer to me.”

And they came closer. He said, “I am your brother,

Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt. And now do not be

distressed, or angry with yourselves, because you sold

me here; for God sent me before you to preserve life.

For the famine has been in the land these two years;

and there are five more years in which there will be

neither plowing nor harvest. God sent me before you to

preserve for you a remnant on earth, and to keep alive

for you many survivors. So it was not you who sent me

here, but God; he has made me a father to Pharaoh, and

lord of all his house and ruler over all the land of

Egypt.

Hurry and go up to my father and say to him, ‘Thus

says your son Joseph, God has made me lord of all

Egypt; come down to me, do not delay. You shall settle

in the land of Goshen, and you shall be near me, you

and your children and your children’s children, as well

as your flocks, your herds, and all that you have. I will

provide for you there—since there are five more years

of famine to come—so that you and your household,

and all that you have, will not come to poverty.’

And now your eyes and the eyes of my brother

Benjamin see that it is my own mouth that speaks to

you. You must tell my father how greatly I am honored

in Egypt, and all that you have seen. Hurry and bring

my father down here.”

Then he fell upon his brother Benjamin’s neck and

wept, while Benjamin wept upon his neck. And he

kissed all his brothers and wept upon them; and after

that his brothers talked with him.

Word of God, word of life.

Thanks be to God.

PSALM: Psalm 67

Read Responsively

May God be merciful to us and bless us;

may the light of God’s face shine upon us.

Let your way be known upon earth,

your saving health among all nations.

Let the peoples praise you, O God;

let all the peoples praise you.

Let the nations be glad and sing for joy,

for you judge the peoples with equity

and guide all the nations on earth.

Let the peoples praise you, O God;

let all the peoples praise you.

The earth has brought forth its increase;

God, our own God, has blessed us.

May God give us blessing,

and may all the ends of the earth

stand in awe.

Amen.

SECOND READING: Romans 11:1-2a, 29-32

A reading from Romans.

[Paul writes:] I ask, then, has God rejected his

people? By no means! I myself am an Israelite, a

descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of

Benjamin. God has not rejected his people whom he

foreknew.

For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.

Just as you were once disobedient to God but have

now received mercy because of their disobedience,

so they have now been disobedient in order that, by

the mercy shown to you, they too may now receive

mercy.

For God has imprisoned all in disobedience so that

he may be merciful to all.

Word of God, word of life.

Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION (please sing twice)

Halle, Halle, Hallelujah (172)

Halle, halle, hallelujah.

Halle, halle, hallelujah.

Halle, halle, hallelujah.

Hallelujah. Hallelujah.

GOSPEL: Matthew 15: 21-28

The holy gospel according to Matthew.

Glory to you, O Lord.

Jesus left that place and went away to the district of

Tyre and Sidon. Just then a Canaanite woman from

that region came out and started shouting, “Have

mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is

tormented by a demon.” But he did not answer her at

all. And his disciples came and urged him, saying,

“Send her away, for she keeps shouting after us.”

[Jesus] answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep

of the house of Israel.” But she came and knelt

before him, saying, “Lord, help me.” He answered,

“It is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it

to the dogs.” She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs

eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.”

Then, Jesus answered her, “Woman, great is your

faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” And her

daughter was healed instantly.

The gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, O Christ.

OFFERING PRAYER

Together, let us pray.

Blessed are you, O God, maker of all things.

Through your goodness you have blessed us

with these gifts: ourselves, our time, and our

possessions. Use us, and what we have

gathered, in feeding the world with your love,

through the one who gave himself for us,

Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

Amen.

7

ANIMA CHRISTI (THE SOUL OF CHRIST)

(Please close your eyes in meditation as we invite a

spiritual communion with Jesus.)

Jesus, may all that is in you flow into me.

May your body and blood be my food and drink.

May your passion and death be my strength and life.

Jesus, with you by my side enough has been given.

May the shelter I seek be the shadow of your cross.

Let me not run from the love which you offer.

But hold me safe from the forces of evil.

On each of my dyings shed your light and your love.

Keep calling to me until that day comes.

When with our saints, I may praise you forever.

Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER

Lord, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to

pray.

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those

who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power,

and the glory, forever and ever.

Amen.

What is “Pop Up Worship?

Our first PopUp Worship was held last Tuesday

evening at Souderton Borough Park. It was a

beautiful night of gathering at sunset. What a

blessing to see people we haven’t seen in a while.

Our next PopUp Worship will be held:

August 18 at 7PM – Franconia Town Park

Enter and Park at the entrance off Allentown Rd.

“Pop Up Worship” is a form of outdoor worship

which is simple to set up and has a lot of flexible

elements. It is designed to offer worship at different

locations where we just “pop-up” at a local public

space and enjoy a worship gathering.

Our worship will have some singing, praying, and

bible study. Instead of a sermon – we will engage in

conversation about the bible and learn together.

Join Pastor John as he leads “Pop Up” worship

services each Tuesday evening, starting at 7PM at

the following locations:

8/18 – Franconia Town Park

8/25 - Souderton Borough Park

9/1 - Franconia Town Park

Bring your own chairs, picnic blanket, and other

comforts. Social distancing required, masks are

suggested.

An Update from Pastor John

At the Pop Up Worship Service on Tuesday, I made

a confession. I talked about the hole that had formed

in my heart – now that we are 5 months into the

pandemic and seemingly months away from it

ending. As an introvert, time alone is often a

welcome thing. As many of you know, introverts

tend to spend energy when gathering with people.

We withdraw to find time to recharge our batteries.

Early on during the pandemic, I was feeling OK. In

fact I was excited by the time for innovation – to do

some new things we may not have otherwise done.

But after a time, the loss of connection, conversation

and community can sadden even the most introverted

among us. I admit to feeling that sadness recently.

Tuesday’s Pop-Up worship was a needed boost to

get beyond that sadness. God was with us as we

sang together, prayed together, studied together, and

shared the Lord’s Supper together. For many it was

the first time since March. We said good night to

each other by singing “Taps” with Merril Christman

playing his trombone at dusk.

I hope you can join us at our next PopUp worship on

Tuesday, August 18th at Franconia Town Park.

Please enter and park at the Allentown Road

entrance.

Most of what follows is a reminder of what we’ve

been doing to stay connected since March, with

some small changes or additional information.

1. There will be no Emmanuel “office hours” until

further notice. If you need access to the building,

or need to speak with Pastor John, please call

him directly at 914-275-3106.

2. We will continue worship Services by live

streaming or recorded video on our website or

Facebook Page, both of which are listed on the

inside front cover of this bulletin. The Sunday

Schedule will continue as follows:

Sunday’s Kids Online @ 9:30 AM

Sunday Worship @ 10AM

Online Coffee Hour @ 11:00 AM

3. We are allowing some small groups to meet

starting July 1. We’ll be in touch with those

groups to see how or when they’d like to resume

activities.

4. The E-Meal Ministry has now served over

28,000 meals to our neighbors in need. More

information may be found on page 12. Please

remember that distribution hours are now Mon. -

Sat. 10:30 AM – 1:00 PM.

5. We are in need of more E-Meal volunteers to

cover packaging and distribution shifts. Please

consider stepping up to serve and sign up on our

SignUpGenius page https://rb.gy/47vkgh

6. Thank you for keeping up your offerings and for

making good use of our E-Giving process. If you

haven’t enrolled, I invite you to do so by clicking

Words from Martin Luther’s

“A Simple Way to Pray”

I will tell you as best I can what I do personally

when I pray. First, when I feel that I have become

cool and joyless in prayer because of other tasks or

thoughts (for the flesh and the devil always impede

and obstruct prayer), I take my little psalter, hurry to

my room, or, if it be the day and hour for it, to the

church where a congregation is assembled and, as

time permits, I say quietly to myself and word-for-

word the Ten Commandments, the Creed, and, if I

have time, some words of Christ or of Paul, or some

psalms, just as a child might do.

It is a good thing to let prayer be the first business of

the morning and the last at night. Guard yourself

carefully against those false, deluding ideas which

tell you, "Wait a little while. I will pray in an hour;

first I must attend to this or that." Such thoughts get

you away from prayer into other affairs which so

hold your attention and involve you that nothing

comes of prayer for that day.

Emmanuel Serves !

28,000 Meals

Handed Up

Expanded

Capacity to

Serve

Thanks Be To God! ______________________________________________

After seeing a slight drop

off in meal distribution

during June and July, we

are noticing an uptick in

the first two weeks of

August – averaging 208

meals per day through

August 12. By the time

you read this article, we will surpass 28,000 meals

and could reach 30,000 by Saturday, August 22.

It’s hard to be certain as to why the meal numbers

have increased, but it may be that as the pandemic

lengthens, the reserves and supports that people have

relied on have evaporated. The local unemployment

rate remains high, and there is still no firm decision

on restoration of all or some of the expired enhanced

unemployment benefits. All indications remain that

an economic recovery will be slow, and we have yet

to realize how many small businesses have had to

close forever, along with the jobs they provided.

We are positioning the E-

Meal program to be a long-

term ministry at Emmanuel.

One of the first steps toward

that was the acquisition of a

modern, efficient, high-

capacity commercial

refrigerator that was

installed this week. It was

funded by a grant we

received from the PA Dept.

of Environmental Protection

It’s a beauty. Look how

much it can store.

In September, we will launch a program to help

bring more volunteers into the daily rotation. We

will reach out to local churches, businesses, civic

organizations, perhaps even some families, who

would like to take a day and volunteer to support the

program. Many non-profits have been successful

with similar programs which encourage groups to

make a commitment to community service.

We continue to need individual volunteers to fill the

ongoing daily work to package meals for distribution

and to hand the meals up to people who come

looking for our help. Signing up is easy – and

encourage a friend to come along with you. You can

sign up at: https://rb.gy/47vkgh

In the past weeks, we have been blessed to have so

many fresh fruits and vegetables grown locally by

the Garden of Health Food Bank, and by family

farms and gardens. If we were at a country fair, I’d

hate to have to judge whether the Crouthamel

tomatoes or the Morral tomatoes were the sweetest.

Independent is the lead story in this week’s Ministry

Link Newsletter from the Southeast PA Synod. You

Reaches Out

Update on Clergy Emergency League

A few weeks ago, I shared with you that I had joined a group of pastors and faith leaders called the Clergy

Emergency League (CEL). My reason for joining was to

support the efforts of those who seek non-violent

solutions to the conflict over recent protests.

Several members of Emmanuel have approached me in

support of my involvement, and others with concerns about the group’s political positions. I have listened

intently to all of you and prayed about how to move

forward.

I have decided that, for the good of the “koinonia,” the

beautiful fellowship that we have at Emmanuel, and for

the sake of the burgeoning and vibrant ministry that is

going on in our community, I will be setting aside my affiliation with the CEL and will not pursue further

involvement with them.

Meanwhile the work of the church goes in in the Indian

Valley and beyond and I am grateful for the opportunity

to do this work with the wonderful people that make up

Emmanuel Lutheran Church.

My “office” is always open to any of you who would like

to discuss this with me individually.

Lutheran Disaster Response Seeks

Support for Fire Victims in Pottstown

Lutheran Disaster Response – Eastern PA is supporting community efforts to collaborate to serve the survivors of

the Ashwood Apartment fire in North Coventry.

Right now plans are underway to establish ways to

support individual families. If you are interested in helping, the most urgent need right now is financial

donations to support emergency and interim housing.

The lead agency receiving donations is The Community Network (TCN). To donate, visit:

https://tcnetwork.org/support-ashwood-apartment-fire-victims/.

Please share with others as you see fit and keep the

families in your prayers. The impact of COVID is making recovery challenging. Nevertheless, the community is

coming together in amazing ways.

Thank you,

Julia Menzo Director of Community Outrea

ELCA World Hunger is responding. Our hosts

hunger and poverty addressed in Rick Steves’

the front lines of the current hunger crisis, who
